But when Joe Pa was coaching in the 60s and 70s, the only real consistent national contender in that part of the country, aside from PSU was Pitt. Syracuse fell on hard times after the 60s prior to Dom MacPherson coming there. BC, WV and Miami all emerged as powers in the 80s when new coaches and star players started coming to those schools. I think the thing was Joe Pa had built up such an established empire at the time and Pitt was on probation starting in 1982 or 83, so they started to get more blue chip recruits.
In any case Joe Pa still got his share of blue chippers even with that happening, same thing with Bo in the 1980s with the end of the "Big 2 Little 8" era. It's a moot point.
I think we need to keep Denard at quarterback for two reasons, to keep Tate hungry and make him a better player, and also to develop Denard into a better passer in case of a situation where he ends up starting.
Why don't we do it old school single wing style and have Koger in there as an H-Back that way we get an extra blocker if they decide to put 7 or 8 in the box.

I don't see why GT has to win anymore than Miami for our help. Personally i'd rather play Miami than GT simply because that option offense is REALLY hard to stop.

Ask him what makes this team better and more prepared for the Big Ten season, especially on the road? Have they been doing anything to prepare for that?
Does having a team that is mostly returning starters give them more of an advantage than other teams in the Big Ten? What impact has the trip to Brazil had on this team?
Has the win against Nebraska on the road given the team confidence that it can win against teams like Penn State, Minnesota, and Illinois?
Especially in pro quarterbacks, there are a lot of teams in the NFL who are still not willing to go get a quarterback who can move outside of the pocket. There are a number of reasons for this, maybe the guy will command a lot of money like Michael Vick, maybe the team would prefer to build a team around a pocket passer, getting him good receivers, running back, and a moat of an offensive line. But I really think if a team has all of the things like that and a mobile starting QB, they're going to be a better team, because it means when the protection breaks it's not an automatic sack.
To me the best player who summed this up was Steve Young, it was a HUGE adjustment for the 49ers to go from having Joe Montana the pocket passer to having Steve Young the scrambler. But once they adjusted their team to Young's strengths as opposed to Montana the 49ers of the 90s were one of the best teams ever.
I think that if Tate goes to the NFL his success is gonna depend more on the guys who are around him, remember football's a team sport and one guy can't win the game on his own. If he plays for a coach and a team that plays more towards his strengths and he has the right weapons he'll be good.
I think we're getting there with the weapons, but i don't think we're quite there yet.
Having him paired up with Mauer in the lineup gives the Twins so many advantages. We have to be able to shut down the rest of their lineup while worrying less about Mauer, and walking him everytime we have first base open.
All of the money from Football goes to the Athletic Department, or at least almost all of it. You gotta understand the AD is financially and (practically) administratively free of the University, they have their own budget separate from the University.
There are only three real rules of understanding between the University and the football program/athletic department:
1. The players go to class and get their degree
2. The team has to be able to win.
3. They have to follow the NCAA guidelines.
Other than those three things the AD and the University administration really don't mingle.
Our athletic department is extremely exceptional in this case, most schools don't have this, they're administration dictates a lot of the Athletic Department policy. Example MSU; they're President has to make a lot of decisions regarding the athletic department, ours hardly has to ask Mary Sue for anything.
I will say this however, every once in a while there's a project, most recently the basketball practice facility, where the AD doesn't have space in the budget for it from revenue and donations. In that case, they'll ask the regents for money. Those cases, however are few and far between.
We're pretty evenly matched as far as the experience is concerned, we have a young quarterback, but the rest of the offense is experienced. They have a fifth year senior quarterback but the rest of the team is relatively young. Defense is going to be the key in the game, which one won't break. We should be fine.
That wasn't an issue, Bennie started out as having these great teams that Crisler had put together and recruited but when it came for players he recruited to shine we would fall short at one point or another. If Bennie was more interested in pushing his players and preparing harder, especially in 1955-56 we would've made the Rose Bowl one of those years, both of those teams were top 10 caliber but would fall short twice both seasons in Big Ten play.
A lot of those teams' success depended on Ron Kramer and Jim Pace, once they were gone the team struggled immensely. Bennie was not as interested in recruiting the way that Woody, Duffy and Evy (Forest Evashevski, Michigan grad and Iowa coach at the time) were. If Michigan had any sense they would have hired Evy as coach in 1959 instead of Bump.
Bump Elliot took a while to come around on recruiting, the first player he "recruited" was Bill Yearby a DT from Detroit in 1962. Yearby later became a two time All-American and helped us achieve that great season in 1964. That season and our demolishing of Oregon State helped convince Ron Johnson to come here, he became an All American on our team in 68.
It wasn't that he was a bad recruiter or a bad coach, it's just that he preferred to develop talent over time. By the time Canham came over, it was clear that wasn't going to work, fortunately for us, he had a very good recruiting class in 68, which propelled us once Bo got here.
Was a huge Tigers/baseball fan when I was little, and when the strike happened in 1994 I was really depressed, plus the fact that my grandpa had died. I was seven years old at the time and I knew about Michigan football but i had never really paid attention to it until I watched the Michigan-Notre Dame game that season (the Remy Hamilton game) and I found that while I still didn't fully understand the game, I knew that I liked the winged helmets.
I just graduated from Michigan last week, the only two games that we won that I attended were the 2007 Eastern Michigan game and the 2008 Wisconsin game. I was completely ignorant on how to get student tickets and their deadlines when I was a student. And every other game I attended we lost, including three games my freshman year (2005) and all the other games i went to in 2007 and 2008, i didn't go in 2009. I would give anything to stop being a bad luck charm in terms of attendance for football games.
The grad assistant from Renaissance High School was my 9th Grade locker partner Andre Criswell. I went to that high school and went to U-M along with about 50 of my graduating classmates. As far as I'm concerned there is no recruiting pipeline from Renaissance to MSU, I knew Carson in high school, he was a dumbass who kept getting into trouble, so did his twin sister. I wasn't surprised when he left because he's not a team player.

A-Train came off the bench his freshman year to carry the mail and did so in helping us to win a national championship. After that he stayed and won two Big Ten Championships and an Orange Bowl. He was an athletic power runner like Tyrone Wheatley in my opinion, unfortunately however i was only seven when Wheatley graduated so i never got to admire him as much as A-Train. I also love him because he stayed to get his degree when some scouts were projecting him as a first round pick after his junior year.
