Thank you for this scolumn and thank you JMo. This column literally brought tears to my eyes.

I wouldn't be shocked to see someone transfer a la Smotrycz. With the incoming freshman and those guys back, someone may decide that he'd rather go somewhere where he can play something other than garbage minutes.

I was just going to post the same thing. Not only is it an insight into Michigan football in the 20s, but it highlights perhaps the best qb in Michigan history and a qb who tends to get short shrift on this board.

On the basketball side of things you might want to consider Rudy T or Bill Buntin.

And once again, no love in this thread for Benny Friedman. He would have won the Heisman -- probably twice -- if it existed in the 20s.

Please delete. I searched via my iPAD and nothing showed up -- and then it did. Sorry.

Playing at Fenway, CitiField, or Yankee Stadium is probably a non-starter, they all hold only about 40-45,000. Playing in the Meadowlands might make sense, but that's probably going to happen sooner or later one of the years they play Rutgers.

Really liked Miles' demeanor and candor. When Beilein decides to retire, Michigan could do a lot worse than trying to bring Miles to Ann Arbor.

If true, for some reason this bothers me as much, if not more, that all the other stuff going on regarding his commitment. If you can't level with your teammate, then you've got major issues. It's one thing to say something like, "I'm not saying; wait and see." It's an entirely different thing to tell your teammate, and one would have to think your friend, that you're going to school with him when you've already made up your mind otherwise.

Beliein is now third in Michigan coaching wins behind Bill Frieder and Johnny Orr*. At his current pace, he's likely to become Michigan's winningest basketball coach sometime in the 2015-16 season.
*Steve Fisher would also be ahead of him, but for the wins wiped out as a result of the Martin scandal.

Be careful what you ask for. The devil you know may be considerably better than the devil you don't know.

Let's revisit this question in about 10 days. The next three games are against teams in the top 5 of the computers and highly ranked in the polls. If they win one, they may crack the top 25. If they win two, they will crack the top 25. If they lose all three, then the top 25 may be something not seen by Michigan for awhile this season.

Filling Assistant Coach positions is something that can probably wait until February -- after NSD. The last thing you want to do is fire an Assistant who's got great rapport with a prospect and then lose the prospect.

Disagree that there's no rooting interest on Sunday. We already beat Nebraska so we want them to beat Purdue. Ditto Northwestern over Illinois. And we root for Iowa -- they are playing Ohio, after all -- at least at this point in the season.

Hey Ace, given Michigan's recent experience with a walking boot, perhaps that wasn't the best word choice. ;-)

If Michigan wins the next three games, in which they will be strong favorites, then .500 the rest of the way would be 11-7 in the B1G. That not only gets you into the Dance, but a reasonably high seed as well.

I remember the 1970-71 season. Michigan was something like 12-2 in the Big Ten and finished second to Ohio at 13-1. Michigan and Ohio split their home-and-home, but Michigan had the misfortune to draw Iowa in Iowa City. Back then, a second place finish was good enough to get you an NIT bid. That season essentially re-started the Michigan basketball program which had suffered after Cazzie and Dave Strack left. The resurgence continued through Tractor Traylor and until the scandals put Michigan on umpteen years of probation and a decade in the NCAA wilderness.

Until a little while ago, I just figured that Michigan was experiencing the normal amount of bumps and bruises that one would expect after playing 12 football games. Then I perused USAToday's odds matchup for tomorrow's game. Michigan has 11 players listed with injuries; KSU has two. Is KSU lucky? Is Michigan just unlucky -- or more forthcoming? Is there an issue with Michigan's field or its training? If my memory serves, Michigan had very few injuries in 2011, but last year there were a number of minor injuries plus injuries to Countess, Fitz and, of course, Denard. This year the number of ACL's alone was alarming. Anyone have some insight?

Actually Clayton Richard, a former Indiana Mr. Football (and Mr. Baseball), was a redshirt freshman when Henne was a freshman. When Richard saw that he wasn't going to play much behind Henne, he eventually turned to baseball full-time. That proved a wise decision, as he has 46 MLB wins, including two 14 win seasons with sub 4.00 ERAs.
