Newsome won the essay contest, held by Harbaugh, for the right to join Harbaugh when he goes to see the Pope. If you haven't read it, you should do so. An impressive young man!

I've been there five different times. It's a great place to visit. As for the comparison with Florence or Venice, suffice it to say they're all great places to visit. And, I'd add Milan and Lake Como as must visit places.

Baseball America, which had dropped Michigan out of its top 25 a couple of weeks ago after the Wolverines lost two of three at Maryland, has Michigan back in at 23. Maryland, by the way, dropped out.

Baseball is highly dependent on one player's performance. A bad team will win games when its pitcher is on his game; a good team will lose games when its pitcher is off his game. The losingest team in MLB history (the 1962 Mets) still won 25% of its games and beat the pennant winner a few times. I believe only one team in the last 60 years has won more than 108 games and even that team undoubtedly lost a game or two to the cellar dwellers.
As a further example, Illinois played last month at then #21 Coastal Carolina, the defending national champion, and won the opener of a three game set.

Before Bud Middaugh, Michigan's long-time coach was Moby Benedict. That segues into one of my cool Michigan stories. 'Twas the summer of '72, and I went to a Cub game at Wrigley by myself. Since I was alone, the bleachers were out -- didn't want to worry about my seat every time I left to get some food, etc. -- so I bought a reserved seat down the right field line by the right field bullpen. (Baseball has changed -- I just walked up the day of the game and plunked my money down.) Anyways, when I got to my seat, there were a bunch of kids calling out to St. Louis' Ted Sizemore and asking if he was going to play that day. I smiled and instead of asking that question, called out, "Hey, Ted, what do you think about Moby Benedict?" (Sizemore had been all Big Ten at Michigan in the mid-60s.) Sizemore looked towards me and pointed. I nodded, he came over and we talked for about 20 minutes about Michigan, about the Daily, about baseball, and about Benedict. It's still one of my favorite days at an MLB baseball park and I couldn't tell you who won that day if you paid me.

You mean like two years ago when they won the B1G baseball tourney at the end of the season and then scared Louisville (at home) in the NCAAs?

Two months ago, I tried to buy a Michigan baseball jersey, both in person at MDen (albeit in Livonia) and online without success. Today, I am able to get a solid blue pullover Nike-made "jersey" from various sources, but that's the only version. I wish there was more selection and perhaps the team's success will lead to that happening. (If anyone knows where I can find other versions, I'd love to hear about it.)

I'm hoping the silence on the Red front is that everyone's waiting for the NCAAs to end so they can hire Mel (or perhaps another of the coaches in the tourney).

From 14-50 to 24-12 was a pretty good swing, but that took a year. This turnaround is hard to beat in my 50 years of following UM sports.

With Maryland ousted from the tournament, I'm guessing StubHub prices will be coming down.
|7 weeks 20 hours ago||It looked like a satellite||
It looked like a satellite StubHub office with computers, half dozen workers, and it worked like a will call window with envelopes alphabetized. It's in a hotel and there were many signs pointing you to the StubHub folks. FWIW, I used AmEx concierge which uses StubHub as a secondary market. I probably paid a dollar extra, but they have all my credit card info so that saved a few minutes.

Problem with passing South Carolina is they thrashed Michigan (although it was at SCar and early).

Maybe. There were an awfully large number of Purdon't, Minnesota and Sparty fans in attendance. One of those teams is gone and another will be gone. Those folks may be turning them over to StubHub as today progresses.

The fact that we'll be playing for the third day in a row has me considering something that's an anathema to me: rooting for Sparty. At least they'll be in the same boat as Michigan.

I read somewhere they're busing to D.C. If that's the case, even with decent traffic, they're not getting there until the wee hours of the morning. I'm guessing they're staying at the Hyatt Regency, which is a couple of blocks from the Verizon Center, but still. I can't see how anything would be prejudiced by swapping the noon and 2 pm games, but Big Ten.
Edit: now hearing that they may not go until the morning. If so, have to believe, schedule will be changed. I would think it could also impact Friday tip - if they move to Thursday evening, then expecting either team to play again at noon . . .

I was complaining to a colleague at work about this today. There are six B1G teams in the central time zone. If BTN wants 9 pm tips, schedule the games there. As for ESPN, they've got three time zones from which to find 9 pm tips.
