Date Title Body
2nd place now

Henry overtook him with a huge game (~120 yards) last week.

I'm alright with Lewis

I'm alright with Lewis topping out as a semi-finalist. King has a ton of INTs, Hargreaves is the best cover guy in the nation, and Lewis did give up a lot of yards against MSU (despite a overall solid performance).

But Butt's omission is a travesty. He's 2nd out of all P5 tight ends in yardage -- about 200 more than the Stanford and Clemson TEs and only 40 fewer yards and the same number of TDs as Henry. Without a doubt, he's performed like one of the top 2 TEs in the nation this season.

Good list

Michigan fans are probably most familiar with Charles Rogers, Lamarr Woodley, Andrew Maxwell, Thomas Rawls, and Mark Ingram, all of whom came out of the SVL. Jake Long played at Lapeer East, which is now Lapeer High. Lapeer entered the SVL in 2014.

The league is a step below the Detroit Catholic League (where OLSM plays).

Eh

Engineering at Alabama is much more challenging and monetarily rewarding than Sports Management at Michigan.

Assuming he loses his

Assuming he loses his football scholarship, I'll bet he leaves the school of his own accord and accepts a scholarship elsewhere in the future.

I really don't think Jones

I really don't think Jones was deliberately setting the kid up to get knocked out. It looks like he was just jabbering with the guy, but both Jones and the victim had their hands down and didn't have confrontational body posture.

This sounds right. Harris is

This sounds right. Harris is much faster, but Weber has shown a lot more power and balance between the tackles. Weber is a better fit for the Michigan offense, but Harris would have been a better complement to the other bruising between-the-tackles backs we already have on the roster.

It's not an average of the

It's not an average of the rankings on the 4 sites. Instead, they average out the rankings on the 4 sites, then re-rank everybody based on that score.

For example, imagine that Player A and Player B are the two best prospects in the country.

On the 4 services, Player A is ranked 1, 2, 3, and 4. That averages 2.5.

Player B is ranked 2, 2, 4, 4. That averages 3.

Player A has the lowest score in the country (2.5), so he's ranked #1 in the composite. Player B is #2.

kinda

He listed a top 5 with Michigan listed first and Stanford listed second. Multiple insiders have suggested that the list is in order, but I don't think Taylor has explicitly said so.

Michigan stopped recruiting

Michigan stopped recruiting both Mack and Jones.

Question

How did Burrell, Settle, and Hand decide to come up together? Did the coaches reach out to them and, knowing they live near each other, suggest they all show up? Or did the kids suggest it to the Michigan coaches?

South Carolina

South Carolina has the #1 and #2 WDEs from 2015 according to the 247composite. Rankings are pretty similar to the Michigan duo, though I'd of course prefer to have my elite players playing different positions.

Alabama has two 2015 composite 5-stars committed already.  Technically Harris is a 4-star right now, though it sounds like that will change soon since Rivals suggested that he's being considered for their top 5 overall.

WDE

WDE

Froholdt

Am I the only one whose mind is totally blown seeing Hjalte Froholdt at #14 overall? When we offered him a greyshirt, nobody knew who the kid was. His tape doesn't look unusually impressive, his physique and athleticism are good but not otherworldly, and he is very inexperienced. I figured he'd end up a 3-star type, but ESPN has him pegged as an early blue chip 5-star.

QB camp?

I think Speight is going to a QB camp in San Diego and bringing along Drake to catch balls.

To add on to this, Peppers

To add on to this, Peppers has teased a surprise visit at the end of May, but he won't say where. These two tweets add up to a surprise visit to New York (ESPN's studios?) at the end of May so the two ESPN 150 players can commit on TV.

Don't forget about Mone.

Don't forget about Mone.

Hand and McDowell

I don't think Marshall's commitment would have as much of an effect on our pursuit of Hand & McDowell as people seem to think. He's a classic WDE while Hand is a SDE and McDowell is a SDE that could also play DT.

Sure...

...but what's the point of being worth millions if you have to live in Ohio?

5 years...

What I found most interesting is this statement:

Said Hand: "Can I live there for five years (and) do I get along with the people there?"

He's the top recruit in the country and he's planning on spending five years in college? Most elite kids are not planning on redshirting and are hoping to be in the NFL by the end of Year 3. Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but I love this kid's character.

A good problem to have

I don't think so

We're talking about still-growing athletes who are improving their leg strength and doing regular speed training with professional coaches. They're adding weight, but it's primarily muscle, which tends to increase speed rather than slow you down. I could see why a guard might slow down a touch by going from 270 to 310 lbs, but skill position players should become substantially faster.

Oops

Replied to the wrong message

This class will be much

This class will be much larger than 16. That's the number of scholarships available right now, but attrition will occur due to injuries, transfers, forgone fifth years, early NFL draft entrees, player misconduct, etc. We'll probably end up with a little over 20 commits, which is should be plenty to have a top 5 class if there's a lot of quality top-to-bottom.

Ahem....

"(Mason and I) talked about it -- we're going to go to the same school. We know for a fact we're going to the same school."

-Artavis Scott

"If me and Tay do end up going to the same school, that will definitely influence George [Campbell] a lot. Us three are like brothers. It would definitely sway his decision a little bit."

-Mason Cole

He said he views Michigan

He said he views Michigan State to be even with all the other schools that have offered. He may not have called up Dantonio and officially decommitted, but the kid is not going to play football at Michigan State.

These Kentucky rumors seem to be baseless, but the truth is that Kentucky would probably be my #1 choice of school for Drake Harris if he eventually spurns Michigan. Let's keep him away from Ohio, MSU, Notre Dame, and any team that we might see in a bowl game one day. Kind of like how I feel about Treadwell -- I wish he'd came to Michigan, but at least he's at Ole Miss and we don't have to deal with defending the kid for the next four years.

I like his wheels, but he's

I like his wheels, but he's way too slow to be a college running back. If Hawaii's coaches have any sense, they'll stick this kid at the nose and let him chase down QBs all day.

Relax

If you listen to recruits, it's pretty clear that Michigan plays fast and loose with the Woodson card. Every year there seems to be a handful of guys who make some statement along the lines of, "Coach said I could become the next Woodson!"

To be honest, I'm surprised it gets kids so excited; most of them were 0-2 years old when Woodson won the Hesiman.

Why haven't we shown interest

Why haven't we shown interest in Reilly Gibbons? He's got offers from Ohio State and Florida, and I'm sure his brother could put a good word in for the good guys.

Wait...?

So you don't want Michigan to land most of their 2014 targets?

Mone is probably a step above

Mone is probably a step above Marshall, but unless we end up with an absurd DL class like Mone/Hand/McDowell, I'd still like to see a WDE pass rusher in there. Marshall was probably our best offer at the position if you exclude the elite national guys that are going to be nearly impossible to pull in.

See?

This is why the SEC needs to be allowed to oversign. Every year, you know you're going to have a handful of your players arrested for violent felonies

Eh

This is just offensive positions. Their DB haul was the best in the country.

If Shane is substantially

If Shane is substantially better than Bellomy AND Gardner gets a serious injury -- something that would keep him out of a large portion of an important game -- then let's burn the redshirt. Otherwise, I want to see the kid play with the rest of the class when they've fully matured in 2017.

Injuries?

You don't lose a game because one player gets injured. You lose a game because your back-up wasn't good enough.

Last season they went 12-0

Last season they went 12-0 and beat us. They'd probably have beaten ND for the BCS Championship if not for sanctions that were enacted before he came to OSU. I'm not sure your comment stings as much as you'd like.

um

Couldn't you just point at a player's pre-commitment ranking to show that Michigan's recruiting rankings aren't inflated? It's not like these guys were 2 or 3-stars before they committed.

Best answers

4) What's the name of the trophy for the Michigan-Minnesota football rivalry?

"They have a trophy for that game?"

9) Do you know all the words to "The Victors?"

"Do I have to sing it?"

No.

"OK, then yeah, I know them all."

and Travis Smith

Travis Smith from Ithaca also seems to be a possibility. Based upon his quotes, it sounds like they've wittled it down even further than we've realized.

"I know they have narrowed it down to three QB's including myself. Coach Borges was at my school last week and is coming back to watch me throw. So, I'm thinking that will be the deciding factor." source

Are their final 3 targets Cornwell, Speight, and Smith?

Agreed

Not to mention that we're supposedly the favorite to land Bryan Mone.

Too bad.

Ward is a huge raw athlete, but I wonder if he saw the classes ahead of him and realized that he'd likely spend his first couple of years developing while watching the linemen from '12 and '13 play on Saturdays. He doesn't seem like the type that you plug in as a RS frosh, but he could turn into a pretty great player after two or three years of coaching.

He's the type of high risk/high reward player that we should be taking now that we have a lot of blue chips moving into the OL in the coming year. Hopefully he'll look around and decide later that Michigan is the best fit.

The quote

Question: "Fair to say that top 3 '14 kids in the state are Webb, McDowell and Harris. Seems like it is more likely than not that Michigan ends up with none of those three. Do you agree, and if so, is that a failure on the staff's part?"

Tim Sullivan: "I think it's way too early to predict that Michigan lands none of them. I would say they're the leader for McDowell, and in pretty good position with Harris. I would say 2/3 is just as likely as 1/3 at this point. If Michigan whiffs on all three, it's definitely a failure on their part, but I just don't see that happening."

I haven't been following

I haven't been following Isaac since he committed to USC. Is he looking around?

Not necessarily good news

According to link in the OP, this gives Florida 5 LBs in their 2013 class. It seems likely that one of them might decide to bail and look elsewhere. The most likely of these to leave is James Hearns, who's been considering making a trip to OSU in January.

If this pushes a 4-star LB into Urban's grasp, I'd rather Anzalone stuck it out in South Bend.

Dan Samuelson just tweeted

Dan Samuelson just tweeted that he'll be deciding between Michigan and Nebraska on Monday, Jan 14th. This might push Hunt's hand if he is really interested in joining Michigan.

Let me translate

Leon McQuay's dad: I hope my son intercepts a pass from Shane Morris at the UA game.

Shane Morris: I hope not.

Random guy from Iowa: YEAH BUT WHAT IF HE SCORES AND FLASHES THE BLOCK M AFTER?

Shane Morris: That would be ok, but hopefully he intercepts the other quarterback.

Leon McQuay's dad: My son is very fast.

Shane Morris: I'm slow.

Leon McQuay's dad: Yes.

COMMENCE WILD SPECULATION

I don't know much about

I don't know much about Marcus Ball, but this quote from two weeks ago about his committment to the Badgers is interesting:

“I'm done now. I'm loyal. If God hits you and says this is how you feel, why go visit other places. I don't want to be of those guys committed and unloyal.” source

I'll bet the kid's interest is pretty high. He doesn't strike me as the type to just take advantage of a free trip to AA.

Growing up in an Army family,

Growing up in an Army family, you never really have a home. You just have places you've lived; a year in New York, two years in Maryland, 18 months in Virginia, etc. Despite the fact that I'd never lived there, my dad always told me that Michigan was home. He taught me through football.

I lived in Fort Lewis, Washington in 1997 and 1998. I remember being sent to my elementary school clad in maize and blue, sticking out like a sore thumb among a sea of Washington State t-shirts before the 1998 Rose Bowl. When people asked why I wasn't rooting the Cougers, I'd tell them that Michigan was my real home.

Instead of celebrating Christmas at home in 1998, I went to Disney World for a week. One day, my dad and I abandoned the rides (and my mom) for an afternoon and went to root on the Michigan players in the orange squeezing contest that preceded the 1999 Citrus Bowl. What kind of 10-year-old would rather watch Anthony Thomas and Steve Hutchinson squeeze oranges than eat cotton candy and explore Disney World? Only me, because the opportunity to actually see some Michigan football players - who always played thousands of miles away from me - was more exciting than meeting Mickey Mouse.

In 2001, my dad and I screamed together at the tiny television from our apartment in Ft. Meade, Maryland when the clock froze at 0:01 at the end of the Michigan State game.

When my dad retired, we finally moved to Michigan in time for me to start high school. I'd only ever visited the state, but thanks to Charles Woodson, Brian Griese, and Chris Perry, Michigan immediately felt like home. For the first time, I was surrounded by Wolverine fans. My dad and I went to the Big House once - both of our first times there - before the injuries he sustained in the military caught up with him and he became wheelchair-bound. I don't mean this to be a sob story, only to explain that my Michigan fandom goes beyond "OMG WOODSON!"; the Wolverines have framed my life thus far.

Despite this, I've never been to The Game and I've never had an opportunity to watch Denard play in person. I'd planned to drive south from Michigan to my new home in Virginia on the Sunday after The Game. I'd be more than happy to leave a day early and make a pit stop watch a historic game between Michigan and Ohio State.

Yep

Man, this play-off game (a year after I graduated) was the most devastating, hair-pulling football loss I'll ever see in my entire life. My alma mater was winning 18-0 at halftime and ended up losing in overtime. They failed all three 2pt conversions when even one XP would have won the game against the team that eventually won the state championship.

Now that I know Lloyd Brady was the opposing QB, I don't even mind.

Yes

Everyone knows that a book must contain at least 3 authors to qualify as valid evidence.
