Zordich to join Michigan staff
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – WYTV Sports has learned that valley native and Youngstown State Safeties/Co-Special Teams Coordinator Mike Zordich is leaving the Penguin program to take over as Safeties Coach at Michigan.
He joins fellow valley native and Boardman graduate D.J. Durkin who was recently hired as the Wolverines’ Defensive Coordinator.
Zordich spent twelve seasons in the NFL, five each with the Eagles and Cardinals, and two with the Jets. He also served as Safeties Coach in Philadelphia in 2011 & 2012.
The former Penn State All-American was contacted over the weekend by Michigan Head Coach Jim Harbaugh, and met with YSU Head Coach Bo Pelini before deciding to leave for Ann Arbor.
Sources tell WYTV Sports that Zordich was in Ann Arbor Tuesday finalizing his contract.

There is NO WAY that SF cut him loose to even be able to TALK with Oakland.

He is a good person. That would be a Petrino or other scumbag move.
|4 weeks 16 hours ago||So if you were the AD...||

That would be ridiculous and something DB would do. Who gives a fuck. Whatver JH wants should be fine by me and everyone else at this point, given the state of the program.
|4 weeks 16 hours ago||seconded||

|5 weeks 5 days ago||^^WRONG^^||
JH is currently making $5M per year with the 49ers and $6.125M per year would make him the 2nd higest paid college coach and would also put him in the top 10 of the highest paid NFL coaches.
Also, an EIGHT year contract is virtually unheard of in the NFL. If that offer is true it is a monster deal that almost nobody could or would match.

IF he does come back to Michigan we better give the guy our complete patience.
No more blowing this fucking thing up every 3-4 years!
|7 weeks 3 days ago||So Hackett is NOT using a search firm??||
Why would he be contacting SF directly? What happened to patience and discretion that he was just urging the fanbase YESTERDAY?
This report seems dubious on a number of levels.
|7 weeks 3 days ago||Fan favorite||
Well he does kinda look like Spike, right?
And the starting job is definitely wide open.
|8 weeks 9 hours ago||Eh, look at Alvarez at Wiscy||
It took him longer than that. He wound up winning 3 Rose Bowls and is in the CFB HOF. Michigan would have fired Alvarez. We eat our young and I'm pretty damn pessimistic about our future right about now.

Yeah, I know you were probably speaking figuratively.
Michigan needs to make Harbaugh a big offer. I really think it's Jim or bust.

|8 weeks 6 days ago||I was also at that game||
Freaking cold game. I was near the top of the bowl in the NW corner (student section) and I got pretty bad wind burn. My face was bright red the rest of the night.
I remember those stupid-ass red clown shoes that OSU wore, and we clearly outplayed them but still lost. Bo wasn't too fiery that game for some reason.
They carried Bruce off of OUR fucking field.
Thanks for bringing back yet another shitty M football memory, dude. Sigh.
|9 weeks 6 days ago||Damn it...||
We need more trust fund babies.
|10 weeks 1 day ago||Fine, 8 years...||
My point is that a great and proven football coach has WAY more authority and control over his roster in college, thereby making it easier to be successful, so handing out a long term contract to a proven winner isn't nearly as risky as it is in the pros. In fact, offering a significantly longer term would be the one thing a college could do to compete with the higher yearly salaries seen in the NFL.
If the typical NFL offer is for 4-5 years that means if M wants to seriously lure a successful NFL coach to Ann Arbor they are going to have to dangle something like 8 years and $50M in front of the guy.
And another thing: handing out 8-10 year contracts for superstars is commonplace in the NHL and MLB (I can think of a few guys on the Tigers and Red Wings right off the top of my head) so why is it so crazy to offer a proven coaching superstar an 8-10 year contract? That's even LESS risky than a 8-10 year player contract because physical deterioration or injury isn't a factor with a great coach.
|10 weeks 1 day ago||I don't understand this false morality||
It's a business decision. We live in a free market economy. Compensation will follow the amount of revenue generated by the industry.
p.s. Do you have any idea what Taylor Swift or Bradley Cooper make a year? Yes, it's all ridiculous. But let's stop comparing any of these situations to our own lives.
|10 weeks 1 day ago||This thread is operating under the assumption||
that M is competing agsinst the NFL, not other colleges. That's why I didn't bother to list NCAA salaries.
|10 weeks 1 day ago||I know colleges cant win a battle vs the NFL||
But colleges could maybe win the war, meaning they sure as hell can and should throw around longer terms. This would at least get a potential candidate to think "do I go for the bigger short term salary or the lower salary with a much longer guaranteed duration?"
At least at that point you are giving the guy something to think about.
|10 weeks 4 days ago||I think Andersen would be a solid hire||

|11 weeks 1 day ago||I agree on pumping the Drake brakes a bit||
but just as an interesting point of reference, Mike Hart's "breakout" game in 2004 was against San Diego State in which he rushed for 121 yards on 25 carries. That performance earned him the starting RB job and he promptly BLEW IT UP. In my dreams, The Drake repeats history.
|11 weeks 6 days ago||...WHO IS A TE TOO||

I don't think the idea of him being a TE at the next level is so absurd.
|11 weeks 6 days ago||...WHO IS A TIGHT END||
And I agree with you. I see him WAY closer to a potential Jimmy Graham than a Megatron. He simply doesn't run good routes like an elite WR.
|12 weeks 1 hour ago||From what I hear||
This disdain for fans and support for Brandon is limited to current or very recent players. I know a shitload of players from the 80s and 90s and they universally HATE Brandon and also think Hoke has been an embarrassing failure.
|12 weeks 3 days ago||I agree||
The results scream total failure, and this is a results based business.
|12 weeks 3 days ago||Seriously, he whiffed on that question||
Mention Henry or Glasgow or Frank Clark or Wilson on defense. On offense, maybe Jack MIller is better than last year, or Glasgow?
|12 weeks 4 days ago||If I'm one of these M coaches...||
my real fear is the slight chance that Brandon just might survive this whole ordeal, so I better wave the pom poms for this jackass or he's going to fire me once he finds out that I didn't join in on this "grassroots" letter-writing fiasco. Call it what it is: extortion. Shameful.
On the other hand, if he gets canned and I'm running my program successfully there's no reason the new AD would feel the need to replace me.
|12 weeks 4 days ago||I hear ya||
The difference between Jack Miller and David Molk, both in attitude and performance, is really depressing.
I really wish Molk was still on this team, he's a guy we could count on to respond to this whole stake BS with some goddamn backbone.
|12 weeks 4 days ago||No shit||
I thought the same thing. Then call a goddamn time out. I'm pretty tired of hearing "that's on me..."
Still, the problem with this team is definitely NOT the DC.
|12 weeks 4 days ago||The new AD should do this:||
Downsize the department back to where it was under Martin, fire most of that bloated marketing staff that Brandon hired, take those savings and give Jim a blank check.
|12 weeks 5 days ago||Gardner is a running spread QB||
He has the same skillset as Denard and Vince Young.
The reason he looks so shitty is because he is absolutely NOT a pro-style, sit in the pocket and scan the field type of QB.
I also contend that Jake Butt would make a shitty center and Trey Burke would make a shitty power forward.
I'm exaggerating to make a point, but it's called using your players' talents to the greatest advantage. How many designed QB runs were called on Sat for our big, fast, and elusive QB?
Zero? Yeah, freaking idiotic.
|12 weeks 5 days ago||Nope||
I guess I feel bad if you have that kind of relationship with your own siblings.
Hart was wrong. Calling MSU a brother of ours is wrong. They aren't part of our family. They are the punk-ass kid from the other side of the neighborhood. To hell with them.
|12 weeks 5 days ago||and maybe the next Michigan coach has balls||
and says this:
"Little brother? No, I certainly do not consider MSU to be our little brother. Not at all. I totally disagree with Mike Hart on that one. Why? Because I actually love my little brother. So no, MSU is not our little brother, they are the punk-ass kid from the other side of the neighborhood. And you can go ahead and tell them I said that."
|12 weeks 5 days ago||duh, Michael is obviously Lloyd Carr||

|12 weeks 5 days ago||yeah we all kind of got that||
but thanks for helping out those at the back of the herd.
|12 weeks 5 days ago||Re: Gardner||
A major failure of our coaches is that they can't seem to realize that Gardner is a dual-threat running spread QB. How many designed QB runs were there on Saturday? Zero. That is coaching malpractice right there. Even Borges knew better!
Instead, they want DG to run a pro-style offense where he is expected to sit in the pocket and scan the field like he's Tom Brady. And then they wonder why it fails miserably.
Gardner is Vince Young. He is Denard 2.0. He is NOT Tom Brady or John Navarre.
Does anyone really think VY or Denard would succeed in our current offense? Of course not.
I have no doubt Gardner would have flourished in the proper offense that does not ask him to do things he clearly CANNOT do. He will never be an NFL QB. Everyone should KNOW this by now! And yet they repeatedly ask him to do the same shit, with the same shit results.
That's like putting Jake Butt at Center and then being frustrated when he can't shotun sanp it properly or pick up an A-Gap blitz. Sure, I'm exaggerating to make a point, but the point still stands.
Hoke/Nussmeier have bungled the offense spectacularly. The results speak for themselves.
|12 weeks 5 days ago||I wonder how Joe Bolden feels today||
after his coach throws him under the bus. Hoke could have supported his "son" by downplaying it publicly, telling everyone this whole uproar is overbown and silly (and then probably chastise Joe privately).
Instead the goddamn buffoon shames his own kid in a written public apology.
What a fucking turd.
|12 weeks 5 days ago||Pretty soon||
anyone that Dantonio and Narduzzi recruit are going to start getting the 3-4 star "bump" that we see other programs get. their talent evaluation is that good, and clearly better than these recruiting services, obviously.

|13 weeks 16 hours ago||Listen guys||
Hoke and Nuss have a DUAL THREAT QB in Gardner, yet they try to have him stand in the pocket and scan the field like Tom Brady...THEN wonder why he's so ineffective!!
How many designed QB runs were there today? ZERO. Freaking idiotic.
You have a quality dual threat QB, not Tom freakin Brady! That means you stress the defense with his running ability then burn them with open, easy to read passes once the D cheats to stop the run. THAT'S THE WAY IT WORKS WITH A DUAL THREAT QB.
These players didn't just magically start to suck, people!
Hoke and Nussmeier have NOT used their personnel correctly. Full stop.

I don't hink I will ever forgive Hoke for that BS. Fireable offense.

That's on the coaches.
|14 weeks 5 days ago||Yes, Brian Cook is broken||
Given everything that's happened the last few years, it's totally understandable. He's degenerated into some sort of MGoHerbertLom (Clouseu's boss) at this point.
Again, totally understandable.
But all the same, his current writing is, sadly, unenjoyable.
Get well soon, mister!
|14 weeks 6 days ago||I liked to hear this from Hoke:||
"We talked about taking them one at a time and that’s what we’re going to do and just see where this team finishes.”
Thank you! Stop talking big picture and just focus on the task at hand.
|15 weeks 8 hours ago||That's a FACT||
And that single idiotic coaching decision might be the one that costs Hoke his job.
|15 weeks 8 hours ago||How many holding calls did they miss?||
Our DL were getting blatantly held all night! And how about Gardner getting clubbed in the head on the key Norfleet completion? Should've tacked 15 onto that play.
No, the refs did NOT give M this game.
|15 weeks 8 hours ago||Meh||
If he had caught the Rutgers punt out of the end zone last week (that bounced on the RU 43) he would've probably been able to take it down to at least their 35 yard line. At that point, M doesn't even need a first down to get into FG range. That's the winning points we're talking about. He has GOT to get up there and field that punt!
Instead, he let it bounce in front of him and the ball rolled 17 yards all the way back to our own 40. Michigan wouldn't score on the ensuing drive.

|16 weeks 5 days ago||If you think Hoke didn't know as of Noon on Monday||

Sure, Hoke is an idiot. But he is also a fucking liar.
|17 weeks 4 days ago||Sure, that's a good point...||
but we heard the same thing last year. "We can still win the Big Ten..." "then it became "we can still win 10 games..." It just seems like in the attempt to keep themselves motivated they end up looking too far ahead. Stop that. Just concentrate on the next 60 minutes on Saturday.
I know this is a pretty trivial thing, it just bugs me. Especially when they talk about their problem being consistency with the little details killing plays. At least tell us you're keeping a laser focus on the here and now. Humor me.
|17 weeks 4 days ago||You know what?||
They need to stop talking about winning the Big Ten. I'm not saying that it's impossible. I'm saying they need to stop talking about it. Do not look ahead. I would really love to hear everyone in the program say "our only focus is the next game. Minnesota. We're not talking about anything else."
This team isn't good enough to look ahead. When I hear the coaches and players talk about still being able to win the Big Ten, I want to scream "Hey! Just concentrate on winning your NEXT GAME!"
|17 weeks 4 days ago||Original poster,||
I had a VERY similar response from Brandon re: uniformz. That needlessly smug, condescending tone is unmistakably written by the same jerk who responded to me.
He appears to revel in pissing off and alienating anyone who even slightly disagrees with his decisions.
It's stunning how many people he's needlessly turned into enemies. Does he really think his current job is just like being a corporate CEO? He must know that deliberately pissing off the alumni base is foolish, right?

|21 weeks 5 days ago||I thought his comment about App State was interesting...||
Hoke said this is the only team on their entire schedule this year that has a winning record against Michigan.
I know that one of the things the school prides itself on is its all-time record against other schools.
Precious few schools have a winning record against the Michigan Wolverines.
And App State is on that short list? Eff that noise.
I'm convinced this was a huge reason why Michigan is playing a 2nd game against them. And I WELCOME it. Who cares about seeing replays of the 2007 upset. Deal with it!
Michigan needs to get those yucks off that list. With vigor.

|1 year 13 weeks ago||The OBVIOUS way to combat the jet tempo...||
When your defense is already rotating in a bunch of guys by design anyway (i.e. you have adequate depth) then the way to negate the absurdly fast (dare i say gimmicky?) jet tempo is to fake a cramp and stop play.
Sorry if this seems like poor sportsmanship. It's also called a winning strategy. Just win, baby. It's not like you're hurting anybody. This is not like hitting late or twisting a facemask.
Simply frustrate the IU offense with stoppages. I am dumbfounded that the M coaching staff didn't start using this tactic.
If you want run your offense at a ridiculous tempo that requires the refs and chain gang to sprint around like chickens with their heads cut off, then we are going to cramp up. SORRY!
Deal with it.
|1 year 14 weeks ago||You know what?||
At this point, I actually bet our O-linemen CAN block! If you give our guys a gameplan that isn't so blitheringly predictable, then those defensive players aren't firing off exactly where they KNOW the play is going right after the snap.
If the defense has a split second of hesitation or doubt, that's all the time our O-linemen need get the jump on them and gain leverage. If our guys aren't constantly being outnumbered and out-slanted then I bet they would be able to execute most of their blocks just fine!
|1 year 14 weeks ago||The turd blames the players||
Borges basically blamed the problem on the personnel. WHAT!?!? How about the fact that your dumbass gameplan had 6 blockers trying to block 8 guys in the box who were all running RIGHT TO THE BALL on the snap!?!?!

You flat out BEASTED in the UTL ND game. M doesn't win that one without you!
We missed you against South Carolina. (I bet you'd have stopped that punt return.)
I always told people you should have played more. So glad I had the opportunity to tell this to you directly.
That is all.
Good luck, sir!
|1 year 39 weeks ago||1985 Michigan defense||
was the best Michigan defense ever in the modern (passing) era. Yes, even better than 1997. Go look up their stats. Crazy. Sick. Awesome.
|1 year 40 weeks ago||Absolutely correct||
They are going to have the horses to play bigger next year. Looking forward to it!!
|2 years 6 days ago||Lewan||
and that's it. Maybe Gardner too because he seems to be the most popular guy on the team and he's the starting QB.
There is nobody on the defense who has established themselves as a team leader.
|2 years 3 weeks ago||or the #1 jersey!||
He is a senior who has made so many HUGE plays for Michigan the last 3 years. Hoke should ask him which number he wants, the #1 or the #21.
|2 years 12 weeks ago||I am also wondering||
what the heck the coaches could have seen in practice with Bellomy. His arm strength in this game was shockingly lacking, nevermind his poor accuracy and lack of field vision.
|2 years 12 weeks ago||^^would've^^||
|2 years 13 weeks ago||^^Good analogy. This is what I'm hoping for.^^||
|2 years 13 weeks ago||I assume you did that on purpose.||
Dominate = VERB. Dominant = ADJECTIVE.
|2 years 20 weeks ago||Proof the ref had a brain fart:||
Not only does the ref witness the blatant PI and not throw a flag, what really blows my mind is that he threw his hat. This means the WR is ineligible to come back in and catch the ball. But if a player is forced out he should be able to re-establish himself in bounds and catch the ball.
|2 years 20 weeks ago||WHAT???||
Roundtree was off balance and "he fell"??? Hoy crap you sound like the biggest Bama homer ever. If you're a Michigan fan you're grandparents are probably Vichy French.
|2 years 20 weeks ago||NOPE, YOU ARE WRONG||
A DB CANNOT jack a wide receiver OFF HIS FEET (!) while he's running a pass route, regardless of wether the ball is released yet. And since it was an obvious pass play and Denard was in the procees of throwing the ball TO THIS WR that either gets called 100 PERCENT OF THE TIME or it is a BLOWN NON-CALL 100 PERCENT OF THE TIME.
Space Coyote you are not a football ref, so just stop it. You are wrong here. Move along. We get killed by 3 scores regardless.
|2 years 44 weeks ago||This leaving early stuff is dumb||
Take a look at history.
Only MONSTERS leave after 1 or 2 years: Magic, Isiah Thomas, Webber, etc.
Jalen Rose and Juwan Howard stayed for THREE years. Smart moves by them!
So... Manny leaving after two? Foolish.
Darius leaving after two? Equally foolish.
Their NBA non-careers support these statements.
Trey needs to stay for 3 years.
THJ ...sheeeit... let's just say that he needs to get his very valuable M degree.
|2 years 44 weeks ago||DING DING fucking DING||
it was painful to watch us not punish their over-commitment on the perimeter defense.
Watching our forwards not being able to finish 8-10 times when they DID drive to the hoop was equally painful.
I yearn for forwards who can drive and convert!
Mediocre perimeter jump shooters are a dime a dozen.
|3 years 4 weeks ago||I concur||
There is too much margin of error in his inputs, yet he seems so definitive in his conclusion, as if the ball was clearly 2.5" short.
He needs to change his summation to conclude that any mathematical calculations yield a ball position that is still within any reasonable margin of error so it cannot be determined whether or not the ball is across. Then say BOOM! math'd and be done with it.
But for him to "prove" that the ball wasn't across using these flawed inputs smacks of Buckeye Engineering. And to that I say "C'mon Man!"
|3 years 4 weeks ago||Ah, but there's the rub!||
The whole point of my disagreement with WolverineBlue is that he has NOT found a frame (from any angle) in which the knee is REALLY touching and the ball is short.
He is using a freeze frame that Periera has proven to be a mirage. This exposes WolverineBlue's otherwise thorough anlysis to be flawed.
|3 years 4 weeks ago||First off,||
Merry Christmas fellow die-hard M fan!
Second, we both probably need to get a life, given the time we are even debating this.
Third, you do not correctly identify Exhibit B in your response to me. This is NOT what Pereira shows in his video analysis. He shows WolverineBlue's Exhibit A, THEN he continues to run that same video angle until the knee actually impacts the ground.
WolverineBlue's Exhibit B is NOT the same as Pereira's freeze frame showing Toussaint's knee conclusively impacting the ground. They are two totally different cameras!
WolverineBlue needs to use Pereira's continuation point of the Exhibit A angle. Let him analyze where the ball is at the true point of impact, THEN we can talk.
|3 years 4 weeks ago||WolverineBlue,||
I commend you for devoting a thorough diary to this topic because this play also caused me so much trauma that it is absolutely worth rehashing, even weeks later!
However, I am very disappointed that you did not even reference the excellent analysis that Mike Pereira, the recognized expert on NFL replay analysis, did on this very play! Did you even see his video analysis of this play? If not, please look it up and watch it!
Your analysis does not take into account Pereira's pivital point: ABC's coverage freezes the replay frame at a point when Toussant's knee IS NOT DOWN!
Peirera very astutely points out that ABC's freeze frame captures a moment in time slightly before his knee makes contact with the ground. He says that replay officials need to freeze the frame when they see evidence of impact, i.e the compression of the knee pad or extremity that is visble when contact with the ground actually occurs.
What ABC (and you) use as evidence is milliseconds before contact. The knee at that point is perhaps 2 inches ABOVE the ground, beginning to enter the strands of the artificial turf. Peirera shows the frozen moment in time that ABC INCORRECTLY uses, which shows Toussaint your 2.5 inches short of the goal line. He then continues to run the tape to CORRECTLY show when Toussaint's knee actually DOES impact the ground. THAT is when he is down, NOT when his knee is hovering in the strands of turf 2 inches above the ground. The rule in football is contact with the ground, so replay officials need to look for evidence of IMPACT. And at knee IMPACT that the ball is clearly across the goal line.
So, your detailed, geometric analysis is fundamentally flawed, because you incorrectly assumed that ABC froze the frame at the correct point in time. Once you see Peirera continue the footage and then see the plain evidence of knee impact you will recognize the error of the replay official (and yourself).
The replay offical blew it. Period.
I beseech you to amend your analysis, because you are wrong.
|3 years 6 weeks ago||This was a money quote, too:||
"There’s no coordinator that goes in there and does it himself. You’ve got to have a head coach that allows you to do what you want to have done and back you on everything you’re doing, and you have to have assistants that are right with you on every step."
The difference from how it was handled the last 3 years is stark.
|3 years 7 weeks ago||RVB should be a captain||
They always pick him to be a speaker, even over the actual captains often times.
Hoke should give Ryan an honorary "C" at the Bust.

|3 years 8 weeks ago||Why he wouldn't retain Heacock||
with his incredible track record is idiotic.
So, hooray to this news if it is true!
|3 years 8 weeks ago||Can anyone please tell me||
the name of the replay official?
|3 years 8 weeks ago||Ooooops||
No, I didn't realize that. Sorry, Brian!
HOWEVA...-12 is still quite harsh for a guy who had 75 important rushing yards in the 1st half alone and had 2 TDs rushing on the day. I think Brian takes some of what Denard gives this offense for granted sometimes.
|3 years 8 weeks ago||Brian Cook,||
Your QB grading system is terribly flawed. You CANNOT have the QB who was responsible for 4 TDs (four BEAUTIFUL touchdowns by the way: two dead-on great throws and 2 runs where he showed his jet-like speed) and only 1 turnover and grade him -12 on the day.
NEGATIVE TWELVE? You can't be taken seriously with grading him like that after such a great overall game. Drew Sharp himself wouldn't grade Denard that poorly!
I've seen net-negative QB performances before, in 2008 and 2005. I know what a net-negative performance looks like. THAT simply was not a net-negative performance!
I think you alluded to the solution. You need to give him much better positives to offset his missed reads.
-12?? C'mon man!
|3 years 9 weeks ago||That feature has been worthless ever since Gerdeman||
started writing it.
Anyone who still thinks that is a "good read" is probably suffering from battered Wolverine syndrome.
|3 years 10 weeks ago||Okay, I don't want to start a flame war here, jeez!||
Frankly, I am too damn happy to bicker with anyone right now.
The whole point of my post was "hey remember this quote?" and shake my fist a little bit at last year's coaching malpractice.
You HONESTLY don't feel that's understandable after the beautiful defensive annihilation we just witnessed??
Cut me some slack, brother!
|3 years 10 weeks ago||If you truly think||
that this improvement isn't 98% due to a MASSIVE upgrade in coaching competence, which is the whole point of my post, then you sir are in the VAST MINORITY.
The defense under GERG and Gibson and Braithwaite would have been another tire fire this year because the coaches have showed these kids how to PLAY. If you can't see that by now then I feel sorry for you.
|3 years 10 weeks ago||Shame on you then||
for doubting Mattison (and Mallory). We're 22nd in total defense with how many new starters and true freshmen AND YOU seem to think a 5th year senior was the cause of our problems last year?!?!?
Here, I've got an extra pair of shorts for you too, mister.
|3 years 13 weeks ago||Extensions don't mean squat||
If offered the OSU job that jerk will likely take it because he knows that he can never win a National Title at MSU.
Michigan State will NEVER win another National Title in football. NEVER.
Saban knew this and left. If MD has an ounce of sense he'll do the same thing if OSU offers him the job.
At OSU he can land the best talent and he could possibly win a NT. There is no glass ceiling at OSU like there is at MSU.
|3 years 14 weeks ago||Maybe I'm wrong, but...||
I'm pretty sure RR did make adjustments for last year's game and MSU did NOT have much, if any, success jumping our snaps last year.
|3 years 15 weeks ago||My God, compare this to last year...||
when that totally incompetent asshole GERG refused to even talk to the press.
Man, I just love, love our coordinators.
We need to appreciate and cherish what we've got going here right now, because these are the salad days, and they're not going to last very long. Just based on Mattison's age and Borges being an appealing HC candidate, I think these guys might be our coordinators for 4 or 5 more years, tops.
Oops, sorry for the buzzkill.
|3 years 43 weeks ago||I don't mean to be a buzzkill, but...||
I read in today's Chicago Tribune that the only reason Max didn't choose Illinois is because they didn't have a scholarship for him and asked him to be a walk-on. He did the smart thing and chose a full ride to a better school.

Awesome information. THANK YOU!
One of the things I heard over and over agin from past players when they went back to see RR's practices is that the team simply did not HIT enough anymore!
Many of these former players would hear RR lament about poor tackling and ball security and pull their hair out because they felt like RR didn't realize that the only way college kids get better at those two things is to HIT... a lot!
|3 years 46 weeks ago||OMG I didn't realize MUPPETS was an acronym!||

|3 years 47 weeks ago||selective memory, buddy||
90% of M fans only started to really bash RR once he started losing... and losing... and losing. And then he lost to a 3-9 Toledo team. At home.
THAT, my friends, is when the mother load of stupid, irrational criticism of RR started rolling in. The typical Michigan Football fan could not process the audacity of such an epic failure and started grasping at stupid straws.
So, was much of the criticism by the oridinary fan and writer stupid and inaccurate? YES.
But was actual, accurate criticism also warranted? FUCK YES.
|3 years 47 weeks ago||A beef I have with the stats crowd is this:||
The stats lovers see turnovers being somewhat random and most associated with having (or lacking) veterans. They fully expect the trend of high turnovers to end simply based on the team's statistical average age increasing.
Meanwhile, many of those "mouth breathers" out there chuckle at such a pointy headed view. They see the game through an experiential lens, not a statistical lens.
They think "gee, if your offense is predicated on have a slighly built QB (Denard) and a slightly built RB (Smith) get hit a bunch of times by our huge DLs and LBs, they will tend to fumble the ball. It is not rocket science. It is grounded common sense and experience from playing the game.
Denard got hit a lot against OSU and ended up fumbling. Vincent Smith also got hit and fumbled against OSU.
Do the stat guys think this magically wouldn't happen next year?
Results from the last 3 years seem to favor the experiential observers.
|3 years 47 weeks ago||holy cow||
your reply post was awesome. I'm a big fan of you.
|3 years 47 weeks ago||Brian is making some big assumptions:||
He assumes RR asked the AD to hire a top-flight DC for big money and was denied.
He assumes that even if said top-flight DC came in he would be able to work with RR's motley band of defensive assistants and actually field a sound defense.
He assumes the crater of upperclassmen on defense was not greatly RR's fault. Did Hoke focus on defensive recruits the minute he was hired? Yes. Did RR focus on defensive recruits the minute he was hired? No. He was consumed with offensive recruits.
He assumes all 3 years of RR's failure was due to underclassmen everywhere. The 2008 defense returned 7 starters and was a pretty veteran unit. It proceeded to be the worst defense in the history of the program (!) up to that point.
The TRUTH is that RR's program had many deep-seated flaws. It was NOT one good DC hire away from being a juggernaut. But when Brian paints the situation as if that were true, and makes all of the unfounded assumptions listed above, all he is doing is generating and prolonging unhealthy angst.
JUST FREAKING STOP IT.
|3 years 48 weeks ago||I agree||
With the new 68-team format, the Big Ten will have 6 teams. This is a fundamental error by Lunardi. Dude, put down your calculator and recognize the obvious furor the B10 would raise if one of their teams has 20+ wins and .500+ conf. record and STILL gets the shaft to make room for some marginal team from a tiny school with no fanbase.
|3 years 48 weeks ago||yep||
Brian misses the fact that much of the defensive staff seemed to be just as big of a problem as the DC.

|3 years 48 weeks ago||Stop with the ignorance||
You clearly don't know much about horticulture or tree transplanting.
The success rate of transplanting an 80-year old live oak is extremely low.
The best they will probably manage is to bring in 50-year old trees. So they will need to wait 80 years to resemble what they have now.
These trees are 130 years old. Their branch structure and canopies are totally unique.
This dirtbag killed trees that literally cannot be replaced to match what exists.
And you have generations of people whose interaction with these specific trees is a very special cultural tradition for them.
Your inability to grasp the true impact of this is a bit mind boggling to me.

|3 years 49 weeks ago||"Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers..."||

|3 years 49 weeks ago||The truth lies in between||
We know that RR laid the blame squarely on the players. "Even Vince Lombardi couldn't do much with what we've got..."
If that's not putting 100% of the blame on the kids and absolving the coaches then I don't know what is.
So okay. Ask yourself this. If Gary Patterson and his staff or Greg Mattison and his staff had these EXACT same kids for the last 3 years, would the defensive performance have been EXACTLY the same?
I think everyone except the most ardent RR apologist would say no.
So, it WAS a coaching problem, at least to some extent. And yet we have never heard RR utter even the SLIGHTEST implication that maybe, just maybe, some of the blame rested on his shitty defensive staffing decisions.
The defense would have again been terrible in 2011 with RR's staff. This is why he was fired.
If the 2011 defense is terrible under the new staff THEN maybe RR will be proven correct and absolved.
|3 years 49 weeks ago||I'm already getting peeved||
It seems like Brian has already made up his mind to bitch about the Al Borges offense.
I hope I misinterpreted that.
The reason I come here instead of going to the MSM is because I believe the guy who runs this blog is NOT some prejudiced hack.
|3 years 49 weeks ago||Regarding ISQDs (Incredibly Surprising QB Draws)||
RR/Magee's usage of Denard on ISQLDs (Incredibly Surprising QB Lead Draws) was nominally less imaginative or predictable than Carr's ISQDs.
Those goddamn predictable lead draws were a huge waste of Denard's ability. Get some misdirection going. Try to fool somebody, anybody, and increase the chances of getting Denard loose in open space for cryin' out loud.
I don't want to hear bellyaching in the Fall with rosy memories of the 2010 offense that scored 7 points against OSU. I expected more creativity and progression out of RR's offense and I never saw it. Mississippi State knew exactly what we were going to do and shut it down quite easily.
Bellyaching should only be warranted when our 2011 offense is less effective against good teams than our 2010 offense was. That is NOT a tall order to fill.
|3 years 49 weeks ago||Wow||
Look at that video.
I'd either forgotten about that or rationalized that away a long time ago. But now, looking back on the last 3 years of EPIC FAIL, I think that's probably the most damning thing I've seen to date on what an incompetent mess RR created on defense.
|3 years 49 weeks ago||BOOM!||
Thanks for this.
|3 years 50 weeks ago||Here's what I think||
I think DB met with Hoke and Borges and asked them "Do you want this kid on your roster?"
How in the world could Brandon NOT ask them this question?
This way DB is taking the heat upon himself and not allowing the new coach to look bad.
If this is true, then protecting the image of your new coach is to be admired. It's something Sailboat Bill didn't think was in his job description.
p.s. I can post again. YAY!
|3 years 52 weeks ago||Your Point #3||
Is absolutely right on the money. No DC worth his salt wanted to walk into the situation RR created by stubbornly trusting his defensive assistants.
|3 years 52 weeks ago||This is an important point||
Jarrett Irons said Mattison had his players practice tackling EVERY DAY.
I can guarantee you that RR's staff did not do this.
Then it became some mysterious surprise to them when our boys couldn't tackle. And then they stay stupid shit like even Vince Lombardi couldn't get this team to play well.
Gee, thanks Coach. Can I get out from under the bus now???
|4 years 48 min ago||Mike Cox||
I've heard that RR's assertion that Mike Cox wasn't able to play due to injury was a "creative" description of the actual situation.
In camp, everyone (even all of the other RBs!) couldn't stop gushing about Mike Cox and what a beast he was.
We might have a Minor-type RB right under our nose who can provide instant production.
|4 years 1 hour ago||Watching Bellomy's highlight reel||
I am pretty surprised this kid is only a 3-star. He looks like an absolute stud. He has a rifle for an arm and is very fast and elusive. His HS film is more impressive than Tate Forcier's.
Furthermore, I'm incredibly excited and optimistic that Hoke/Borges have decided to recruit such a mobile, dual-threat QB like this and not some 6'-5" tall statue.
Welcome aboard! You made a great decision, Mr. Bellomy.
|4 years 1 hour ago||I think there is a little bit of bias||
The northern kids don't play as much football in HS as the southern kids, so the northern boys develop their game more in college.
I think its not very flattering for the recruiting sites that there was only ONE 5-star left playing in the NFL playoffs, and that's a northerner by the name of Lamarr Woodley.
|4 years 1 hour ago||You're frickin stupid||
Out of that list of great players ALL of them were freshmen or sophs except for Braylon, Avant and Watson. Pierre Woods was not a consistently great player.
So a team full of newbies wins the Big Ten title and goes to the Rose Bowl and barely loses to the prohibitive favorite, Texas.
And you decide to bitch and moan?
And you watch the 2004 M vs MSU game and aren't simply filled with joy at what a great game and great comeback that was? You actually consider that game painful to watch?
I read your first sentence and immediately assumed you were a visiting Sparty. Then I realized you are the worst sort of Michigan fan and I became filled with disgust.
|4 years 1 hour ago||2011 offense||
I think that Denard running play action roll-outs and designed scrambles are going to be WAYYYY more deadly than Magee's incredibly predictable QB lead draws every third play. Sure, those picked up decent chunks of yards against inferior defenses but they also got Denard beat the hell up way too much.
The 2011 Borges Offense will be clearly better than the 2010 Magee Offense.
Don't look back!

what I meant was that defenses played an umbrella zone between the 20s to prevent the big play, then allowed the field to constrict and suffocate our offense.
|4 years 4 days ago||Toledo||
The loss to Toledo at home turned A LOT of people against RR.
|4 years 4 days ago||Huh?||
What the 2008 coaching staff accomplished with that very good array of talent is disgusting.
|4 years 4 days ago||You wanna start a betting pool?||
I propose instead of a pool centered around whining about what some stupid-ass media guys write in their fish wrappers, why don't we instead bet on this:
Chances we score more than 7 points against OSU.
Chances we score more than 17 points against MSU.
Chances we score more than 14 points in our bowl game.
I am in the camp that most teams gladly allowed Michigan to roll down the field between the zed zones. But once the field shortened and there wasn't physically enough room to spread out the defense, our offense sputtered and died. This means all those yards were a meaningless mirage.
