I'VE HAD JUST ABOUT ENOUGH OF YOU SONNY
|6 weeks 2 days ago||The OBVIOUS way to combat the jet tempo...||
When your defense is already rotating in a bunch of guys by design anyway (i.e. you have adequate depth) then the way to negate the absurdly fast (dare i say gimmicky?) jet tempo is to fake a cramp and stop play.
Sorry if this seems like poor sportsmanship. It's also called a winning strategy. Just win, baby. It's not like you're hurting anybody. This is not like hitting late or twisting a facemask.
Simply frustrate the IU offense with stoppages. I am dumbfounded that the M coaching staff didn't start using this tactic.
If you want run your offense at a ridiculous tempo that requires the refs and chain gang to sprint around like chickens with their heads cut off, then we are going to cramp up. SORRY!
Deal with it.
|7 weeks 6 days ago||You know what?||
At this point, I actually bet our O-linemen CAN block! If you give our guys a gameplan that isn't so blitheringly predictable, then those defensive players aren't firing off exactly where they KNOW the play is going right after the snap.
If the defense has a split second of hesitation or doubt, that's all the time our O-linemen need get the jump on them and gain leverage. If our guys aren't constantly being outnumbered and out-slanted then I bet they would be able to execute most of their blocks just fine!
|7 weeks 6 days ago||The turd blames the players||
Borges basically blamed the problem on the personnel. WHAT!?!? How about the fact that your dumbass gameplan had 6 blockers trying to block 8 guys in the box who were all running RIGHT TO THE BALL on the snap!?!?!
This jerk is exactly like RR blaming his team's defensive failures on his personnel.

There is nobody on the defense who has established themselves as a team leader.

He is a senior who has made so many HUGE plays for Michigan the last 3 years. Hoke should ask him which number he wants, the #1 or the #21.

what the heck the coaches could have seen in practice with Bellomy. His arm strength in this game was shockingly lacking, nevermind his poor accuracy and lack of field vision.

|1 year 13 weeks ago||Proof the ref had a brain fart:||
Not only does the ref witness the blatant PI and not throw a flag, what really blows my mind is that he threw his hat. This means the WR is ineligible to come back in and catch the ball. But if a player is forced out he should be able to re-establish himself in bounds and catch the ball.
|1 year 14 weeks ago||WHAT???||
Roundtree was off balance and "he fell"??? Hoy crap you sound like the biggest Bama homer ever. If you're a Michigan fan you're grandparents are probably Vichy French.
|1 year 14 weeks ago||NOPE, YOU ARE WRONG||
A DB CANNOT jack a wide receiver OFF HIS FEET (!) while he's running a pass route, regardless of wether the ball is released yet. And since it was an obvious pass play and Denard was in the procees of throwing the ball TO THIS WR that either gets called 100 PERCENT OF THE TIME or it is a BLOWN NON-CALL 100 PERCENT OF THE TIME.
Space Coyote you are not a football ref, so just stop it. You are wrong here. Move along. We get killed by 3 scores regardless.
|1 year 38 weeks ago||This leaving early stuff is dumb||
Take a look at history.
Only MONSTERS leave after 1 or 2 years: Magic, Isiah Thomas, Webber, etc.
Jalen Rose and Juwan Howard stayed for THREE years. Smart moves by them!
So... Manny leaving after two? Foolish.
Darius leaving after two? Equally foolish.
Their NBA non-careers support these statements.
Trey needs to stay for 3 years.
THJ ...sheeeit... let's just say that he needs to get his very valuable M degree.
|1 year 38 weeks ago||DING DING fucking DING||
it was painful to watch us not punish their over-commitment on the perimeter defense.
Watching our forwards not being able to finish 8-10 times when they DID drive to the hoop was equally painful.
I yearn for forwards who can drive and convert!
Mediocre perimeter jump shooters are a dime a dozen.
|1 year 49 weeks ago||I concur||
There is too much margin of error in his inputs, yet he seems so definitive in his conclusion, as if the ball was clearly 2.5" short.
He needs to change his summation to conclude that any mathematical calculations yield a ball position that is still within any reasonable margin of error so it cannot be determined whether or not the ball is across. Then say BOOM! math'd and be done with it.
But for him to "prove" that the ball wasn't across using these flawed inputs smacks of Buckeye Engineering. And to that I say "C'mon Man!"
|1 year 50 weeks ago||Ah, but there's the rub!||
The whole point of my disagreement with WolverineBlue is that he has NOT found a frame (from any angle) in which the knee is REALLY touching and the ball is short.
He is using a freeze frame that Periera has proven to be a mirage. This exposes WolverineBlue's otherwise thorough anlysis to be flawed.
|1 year 50 weeks ago||First off,||
Merry Christmas fellow die-hard M fan!
Second, we both probably need to get a life, given the time we are even debating this.
Third, you do not correctly identify Exhibit B in your response to me. This is NOT what Pereira shows in his video analysis. He shows WolverineBlue's Exhibit A, THEN he continues to run that same video angle until the knee actually impacts the ground.
WolverineBlue's Exhibit B is NOT the same as Pereira's freeze frame showing Toussaint's knee conclusively impacting the ground. They are two totally different cameras!
WolverineBlue needs to use Pereira's continuation point of the Exhibit A angle. Let him analyze where the ball is at the true point of impact, THEN we can talk.
|1 year 50 weeks ago||WolverineBlue,||
I commend you for devoting a thorough diary to this topic because this play also caused me so much trauma that it is absolutely worth rehashing, even weeks later!
However, I am very disappointed that you did not even reference the excellent analysis that Mike Pereira, the recognized expert on NFL replay analysis, did on this very play! Did you even see his video analysis of this play? If not, please look it up and watch it!
Your analysis does not take into account Pereira's pivital point: ABC's coverage freezes the replay frame at a point when Toussant's knee IS NOT DOWN!
Peirera very astutely points out that ABC's freeze frame captures a moment in time slightly before his knee makes contact with the ground. He says that replay officials need to freeze the frame when they see evidence of impact, i.e the compression of the knee pad or extremity that is visble when contact with the ground actually occurs.
What ABC (and you) use as evidence is milliseconds before contact. The knee at that point is perhaps 2 inches ABOVE the ground, beginning to enter the strands of the artificial turf. Peirera shows the frozen moment in time that ABC INCORRECTLY uses, which shows Toussaint your 2.5 inches short of the goal line. He then continues to run the tape to CORRECTLY show when Toussaint's knee actually DOES impact the ground. THAT is when he is down, NOT when his knee is hovering in the strands of turf 2 inches above the ground. The rule in football is contact with the ground, so replay officials need to look for evidence of IMPACT. And at knee IMPACT that the ball is clearly across the goal line.
So, your detailed, geometric analysis is fundamentally flawed, because you incorrectly assumed that ABC froze the frame at the correct point in time. Once you see Peirera continue the footage and then see the plain evidence of knee impact you will recognize the error of the replay official (and yourself).
The replay offical blew it. Period.
I beseech you to amend your analysis, because you are wrong.
|1 year 51 weeks ago||This was a money quote, too:||
"There’s no coordinator that goes in there and does it himself. You’ve got to have a head coach that allows you to do what you want to have done and back you on everything you’re doing, and you have to have assistants that are right with you on every step."
The difference from how it was handled the last 3 years is stark.

|2 years 2 weeks ago||Ooooops||
No, I didn't realize that. Sorry, Brian!
HOWEVA...-12 is still quite harsh for a guy who had 75 important rushing yards in the 1st half alone and had 2 TDs rushing on the day. I think Brian takes some of what Denard gives this offense for granted sometimes.
|2 years 2 weeks ago||Brian Cook,||
Your QB grading system is terribly flawed. You CANNOT have the QB who was responsible for 4 TDs (four BEAUTIFUL touchdowns by the way: two dead-on great throws and 2 runs where he showed his jet-like speed) and only 1 turnover and grade him -12 on the day.
NEGATIVE TWELVE? You can't be taken seriously with grading him like that after such a great overall game. Drew Sharp himself wouldn't grade Denard that poorly!
I've seen net-negative QB performances before, in 2008 and 2005. I know what a net-negative performance looks like. THAT simply was not a net-negative performance!
I think you alluded to the solution. You need to give him much better positives to offset his missed reads.
-12?? C'mon man!
|2 years 2 weeks ago||That feature has been worthless ever since Gerdeman||

You HONESTLY don't feel that's understandable after the beautiful defensive annihilation we just witnessed??
Cut me some slack, brother!
|2 years 4 weeks ago||If you truly think||
that this improvement isn't 98% due to a MASSIVE upgrade in coaching competence, which is the whole point of my post, then you sir are in the VAST MINORITY.
The defense under GERG and Gibson and Braithwaite would have been another tire fire this year because the coaches have showed these kids how to PLAY. If you can't see that by now then I feel sorry for you.

If offered the OSU job that jerk will likely take it because he knows that he can never win a National Title at MSU.
Michigan State will NEVER win another National Title in football. NEVER.
Saban knew this and left. If MD has an ounce of sense he'll do the same thing if OSU offers him the job.
At OSU he can land the best talent and he could possibly win a NT. There is no glass ceiling at OSU like there is at MSU.
|2 years 7 weeks ago||Maybe I'm wrong, but...||
I'm pretty sure RR did make adjustments for last year's game and MSU did NOT have much, if any, success jumping our snaps last year.

Awesome information. THANK YOU!
One of the things I heard over and over agin from past players when they went back to see RR's practices is that the team simply did not HIT enough anymore!
Many of these former players would hear RR lament about poor tackling and ball security and pull their hair out because they felt like RR didn't realize that the only way college kids get better at those two things is to HIT... a lot!
|2 years 40 weeks ago||OMG I didn't realize MUPPETS was an acronym!||

|2 years 41 weeks ago||selective memory, buddy||
90% of M fans only started to really bash RR once he started losing... and losing... and losing. And then he lost to a 3-9 Toledo team. At home.
THAT, my friends, is when the mother load of stupid, irrational criticism of RR started rolling in. The typical Michigan Football fan could not process the audacity of such an epic failure and started grasping at stupid straws.
So, was much of the criticism by the oridinary fan and writer stupid and inaccurate? YES.
But was actual, accurate criticism also warranted? FUCK YES.
|2 years 41 weeks ago||A beef I have with the stats crowd is this:||
The stats lovers see turnovers being somewhat random and most associated with having (or lacking) veterans. They fully expect the trend of high turnovers to end simply based on the team's statistical average age increasing.
Meanwhile, many of those "mouth breathers" out there chuckle at such a pointy headed view. They see the game through an experiential lens, not a statistical lens.
They think "gee, if your offense is predicated on have a slighly built QB (Denard) and a slightly built RB (Smith) get hit a bunch of times by our huge DLs and LBs, they will tend to fumble the ball. It is not rocket science. It is grounded common sense and experience from playing the game.
Denard got hit a lot against OSU and ended up fumbling. Vincent Smith also got hit and fumbled against OSU.
Do the stat guys think this magically wouldn't happen next year?
Results from the last 3 years seem to favor the experiential observers.
|2 years 41 weeks ago||holy cow||
your reply post was awesome. I'm a big fan of you.
|2 years 41 weeks ago||Brian is making some big assumptions:||
He assumes RR asked the AD to hire a top-flight DC for big money and was denied.
He assumes that even if said top-flight DC came in he would be able to work with RR's motley band of defensive assistants and actually field a sound defense.
He assumes the crater of upperclassmen on defense was not greatly RR's fault. Did Hoke focus on defensive recruits the minute he was hired? Yes. Did RR focus on defensive recruits the minute he was hired? No. He was consumed with offensive recruits.
He assumes all 3 years of RR's failure was due to underclassmen everywhere. The 2008 defense returned 7 starters and was a pretty veteran unit. It proceeded to be the worst defense in the history of the program (!) up to that point.
The TRUTH is that RR's program had many deep-seated flaws. It was NOT one good DC hire away from being a juggernaut. But when Brian paints the situation as if that were true, and makes all of the unfounded assumptions listed above, all he is doing is generating and prolonging unhealthy angst.
JUST FREAKING STOP IT.
|2 years 41 weeks ago||I agree||
With the new 68-team format, the Big Ten will have 6 teams. This is a fundamental error by Lunardi. Dude, put down your calculator and recognize the obvious furor the B10 would raise if one of their teams has 20+ wins and .500+ conf. record and STILL gets the shaft to make room for some marginal team from a tiny school with no fanbase.

You clearly don't know much about horticulture or tree transplanting.
The success rate of transplanting an 80-year old live oak is extremely low.
The best they will probably manage is to bring in 50-year old trees. So they will need to wait 80 years to resemble what they have now.
These trees are 130 years old. Their branch structure and canopies are totally unique.
This dirtbag killed trees that literally cannot be replaced to match what exists.
And you have generations of people whose interaction with these specific trees is a very special cultural tradition for them.
Your inability to grasp the true impact of this is a bit mind boggling to me.

|2 years 43 weeks ago||The truth lies in between||
We know that RR laid the blame squarely on the players. "Even Vince Lombardi couldn't do much with what we've got..."
If that's not putting 100% of the blame on the kids and absolving the coaches then I don't know what is.
So okay. Ask yourself this. If Gary Patterson and his staff or Greg Mattison and his staff had these EXACT same kids for the last 3 years, would the defensive performance have been EXACTLY the same?
I think everyone except the most ardent RR apologist would say no.
So, it WAS a coaching problem, at least to some extent. And yet we have never heard RR utter even the SLIGHTEST implication that maybe, just maybe, some of the blame rested on his shitty defensive staffing decisions.
The defense would have again been terrible in 2011 with RR's staff. This is why he was fired.
If the 2011 defense is terrible under the new staff THEN maybe RR will be proven correct and absolved.
|2 years 43 weeks ago||I'm already getting peeved||
It seems like Brian has already made up his mind to bitch about the Al Borges offense.
I hope I misinterpreted that.
The reason I come here instead of going to the MSM is because I believe the guy who runs this blog is NOT some prejudiced hack.
|2 years 43 weeks ago||Regarding ISQDs (Incredibly Surprising QB Draws)||
RR/Magee's usage of Denard on ISQLDs (Incredibly Surprising QB Lead Draws) was nominally less imaginative or predictable than Carr's ISQDs.
Those goddamn predictable lead draws were a huge waste of Denard's ability. Get some misdirection going. Try to fool somebody, anybody, and increase the chances of getting Denard loose in open space for cryin' out loud.
I don't want to hear bellyaching in the Fall with rosy memories of the 2010 offense that scored 7 points against OSU. I expected more creativity and progression out of RR's offense and I never saw it. Mississippi State knew exactly what we were going to do and shut it down quite easily.
Bellyaching should only be warranted when our 2011 offense is less effective against good teams than our 2010 offense was. That is NOT a tall order to fill.
|2 years 43 weeks ago||Wow||
Look at that video.
I'd either forgotten about that or rationalized that away a long time ago. But now, looking back on the last 3 years of EPIC FAIL, I think that's probably the most damning thing I've seen to date on what an incompetent mess RR created on defense.
|2 years 43 weeks ago||BOOM!||
Thanks for this.
|2 years 43 weeks ago||Here's what I think||
I think DB met with Hoke and Borges and asked them "Do you want this kid on your roster?"
How in the world could Brandon NOT ask them this question?
This way DB is taking the heat upon himself and not allowing the new coach to look bad.
If this is true, then protecting the image of your new coach is to be admired. It's something Sailboat Bill didn't think was in his job description.
p.s. I can post again. YAY!
|2 years 45 weeks ago||Your Point #3||
Is absolutely right on the money. No DC worth his salt wanted to walk into the situation RR created by stubbornly trusting his defensive assistants.
|2 years 45 weeks ago||This is an important point||
Jarrett Irons said Mattison had his players practice tackling EVERY DAY.
I can guarantee you that RR's staff did not do this.
Then it became some mysterious surprise to them when our boys couldn't tackle. And then they stay stupid shit like even Vince Lombardi couldn't get this team to play well.
Gee, thanks Coach. Can I get out from under the bus now???
|2 years 45 weeks ago||Mike Cox||
I've heard that RR's assertion that Mike Cox wasn't able to play due to injury was a "creative" description of the actual situation.
In camp, everyone (even all of the other RBs!) couldn't stop gushing about Mike Cox and what a beast he was.
We might have a Minor-type RB right under our nose who can provide instant production.
|2 years 45 weeks ago||Watching Bellomy's highlight reel||
I am pretty surprised this kid is only a 3-star. He looks like an absolute stud. He has a rifle for an arm and is very fast and elusive. His HS film is more impressive than Tate Forcier's.
Furthermore, I'm incredibly excited and optimistic that Hoke/Borges have decided to recruit such a mobile, dual-threat QB like this and not some 6'-5" tall statue.
Welcome aboard! You made a great decision, Mr. Bellomy.
|2 years 45 weeks ago||I think there is a little bit of bias||
The northern kids don't play as much football in HS as the southern kids, so the northern boys develop their game more in college.
I think its not very flattering for the recruiting sites that there was only ONE 5-star left playing in the NFL playoffs, and that's a northerner by the name of Lamarr Woodley.
|2 years 45 weeks ago||You're frickin stupid||
Out of that list of great players ALL of them were freshmen or sophs except for Braylon, Avant and Watson. Pierre Woods was not a consistently great player.
So a team full of newbies wins the Big Ten title and goes to the Rose Bowl and barely loses to the prohibitive favorite, Texas.
And you decide to bitch and moan?
And you watch the 2004 M vs MSU game and aren't simply filled with joy at what a great game and great comeback that was? You actually consider that game painful to watch?
I read your first sentence and immediately assumed you were a visiting Sparty. Then I realized you are the worst sort of Michigan fan and I became filled with disgust.
|2 years 45 weeks ago||2011 offense||
I think that Denard running play action roll-outs and designed scrambles are going to be WAYYYY more deadly than Magee's incredibly predictable QB lead draws every third play. Sure, those picked up decent chunks of yards against inferior defenses but they also got Denard beat the hell up way too much.
The 2011 Borges Offense will be clearly better than the 2010 Magee Offense.

|2 years 46 weeks ago||Huh?||

|2 years 46 weeks ago||You wanna start a betting pool?||
I propose instead of a pool centered around whining about what some stupid-ass media guys write in their fish wrappers, why don't we instead bet on this:
Chances we score more than 7 points against OSU.
Chances we score more than 17 points against MSU.
Chances we score more than 14 points in our bowl game.
I am in the camp that most teams gladly allowed Michigan to roll down the field between the zed zones. But once the field shortened and there wasn't physically enough room to spread out the defense, our offense sputtered and died. This means all those yards were a meaningless mirage.

Hopefully everyone around here can recognize that criticism of Brandon is separate and distinct from any criticism of Hoke.
I'm irritated by Brandon's mishandling of the coaching change.
But when he then cops an incredibly arrogant, condescending attitude about it that's what infuriates me.
I know a handful of alumni and ex-players who have spoken with Brandon and every one of them say "Wow, that guy's ego is off the charts. And he is incredibly condescending."
Let's give Hoke a fair shake.
But I'm all for burying Brandon until he drops that fucking attitude.

There is absolutely no reason why someone on a NFL playoff team couldn't announce he is taking the Michigan DC job immediately after the playoffs. That wouldn't affect the team one bit.
If you recall, Charlie Weis was hired as the ND head coach while the Patriots were making their Super Bowl run. I vividly remember all of the Pats players congratulating Weis after their SB victory and wishing him well.
Hoke hasn't found his DC yet. NOT a good sign.

So, the good news is that we've upgraded from shitty to mediocre?
|2 years 47 weeks ago||I hear ya||
Seeing those defensive rankings by Hoke's Non-Rocky-Long teams was VERY sobering.
Bottome line: If Hoke doesn't hire a home run DC I think the BH Era will probably stumble out of the gate.
Don't think for one second that a bad DC hire won't screw over BH every bit as much as it did RR.
We need someone even better than Bedford or Austin.
Bring in Trgovac, or Shannon, or Venables.
I'm talking HOME RUN.
Pimp Hand, get out your checkbook, Goddammit!
|2 years 47 weeks ago||how about||
C) The same.
|2 years 47 weeks ago||Did it ever occur to you?||
That all of these guys (Woodson, Tom Brady, Jon Jansen, Aaron Shea, all of the Harbaughs, etc, etc) genuinely think Hoke is a GREAT coach?
They all seem to think the last coaching staff wasn't doing a good job at all.
15-22 backs up their opinion.
They all seem convinced that this new guy is going to do a better job. I mean, did you read how excited Tom Brady was at the prospect of Brady Hoke coaching Michigan?
How can you not read quote after quote from our heroes and not be swayed?
Are you smarter at football than them?
Listen, I lambasted the choice when I heard it. Brady Joke! Holy shit, I can't beleieve DB chose such a loser!
And then I started hearing the genuine excitement of all these football greats gushing and gushing about how great Hoke is.
Instead of arrogantly sticking to my initial opinion I said to myself "Self, all of these great football players and coaches have forgotten more about footbal than I will ever know. So maybe I need to change my opinion on this."
For anyone to stick to their guns and assume they know more about football and more about Brady Hoke than all of these football guys is the height of arrogance.
|2 years 47 weeks ago||Let me tell you something||
If Brady Hoke has the same performance as RR did after year three...
HE WILL BE FIRED AS WELL.
RR's 3 years were constant, horrendous, embarrassing failure on the field.
NOBODY tolerates that.
Not Charles Woodson, not Mark Bihl, not Tom Brady, not Dhani Jones, and not whiney bitches on the internet.
|2 years 47 weeks ago||GREAT POST||
|2 years 47 weeks ago||Don't forget that||
RR moved CB James Rogers to WR in the Spring of 2008. 2 years later he switched him back. Whoops!
He also should have kept Ferrara at DL. Whoops!
|2 years 47 weeks ago||No||
I am bristling at your knee-jerk reaction that Denard will not be able to flourish here and should transfer.
It is WAY too soon to be putting any seeds of doubt out there.
|2 years 47 weeks ago||-1 for suggesting Denard should leave||
Don't even go there, dickhead.
|2 years 47 weeks ago||Bravo, dude||
A great, great, accurate post.
|2 years 47 weeks ago||Well, if RR||
goes somewhere and THEN decides to hire a comptent defensive staff, my immediate reaction will be "Jesus Christ, Rich, why didn't you hire a staff like that at MICHIGAN?!?!?"
|2 years 47 weeks ago||Guess what?||
So, they thought something smelled in Denmark, and...
It turns out...THEY WERE RIGHT!
|2 years 47 weeks ago||I will bet money||
that RR will never again have a winning season ANYWHERE with a defenisve staff as incompetent as the one HE CHOSE at Michigan.
He fucked that up. ROYALLY. The buck stops with HIM.
Hell, I put more care and thought into what kind of shoes I buy my kids than he did in picking the greatest collection of defensive imbecils ever assembled.
131 years of Michigan football proves my point. The 3 worst defenses BY FAR in our program's history.
You CANNOT fuck up staffing decisions that bad and expect to stay. Sorry.
|2 years 47 weeks ago||wait...||
are you referring to the same Old Guard that, you know, actually won all of those Big Ten titles and a national championship?
That Old Guard?
The one that actually KNOWS this guy? And knows what it takes to WIN AT FOOTBALL??
And... they think he is a great hire and will get Michigan back to winning?
Yeah, scew them!
I will instead trust the opinions of internet whiner babies!
|2 years 47 weeks ago||The last time I checked||
Is Cook implying the media reaction had anything to do with the fact that RR and his staff couldn't teach his players how to tackle?
RR was fired because he lost a bunch of games.
Hoke will also get fired if he loses a bunch of games.
Cook is whining about shit that doesn't matter.
|2 years 47 weeks ago||I never said that||
Of COURSE the media skewered RR.
But almost all of those things you listed were brought up AFTER the 3-9 season.
That was my whole point. They were negative AFTER the losing.
If Hoke starts losing, you just watch. The media will skewer him, too.
|2 years 47 weeks ago||If you were voted the Freshman All Big Ten QB...||
you'd be amazed how easy it is to get re-admitted to U of M.
Especially when the new head coach can really use your skill set.
|2 years 47 weeks ago||Holy shit||
the overeaction to any perceived negativity towards RR is ridiculous.
By everyone's pissing and moaning around here you'd think RR wasn't 0-6 against MSU and OSU.
You'd think he wasn't 15-22 in his 3 years here.
You'd think he didn't have the lowest winning percentage of any head coach in Michigan history.
You'd think he didn't have the 3 worst defenses in Michigan history.
You'd think he didn't drive a once-proud program into the ditch.
|2 years 47 weeks ago||THIS JUST IN:||
The media didn't ramp up the negativitiy until RR started losing.
Brian and many others around here seem to imply that if past players and the media had a lovefest for RR then M would have magically won a bunch of games.
Just let it go already.
|2 years 47 weeks ago||Huh?||
It's all about pride, man. Boiled down to the bullshit societal essence of it all, football is probably the best physical metaphor we have. War by proxy.
If you get in a fight and hold your own, you can walk away with your head held high. Maybe some can even argue you could win the next fight.
Getting pummeled, dominated, tossed around like a little girl and just wanting it to stop is, you know, rather embarrassing for the average guy.
So yeah, I would argue that a close loss is much better than getting blown out and embarrassed.
Bo was always very proud of the fact that his Michigan team almost never got blown out. Bo's teams got blown out less times in 21 years than RR's teams got blown out this year alone.
|2 years 47 weeks ago||The 9-3 assumption for next year||
would ONLY be possible with an overhaul of the defensive staff. There is no way in hell M was going to go 9-3 next year with GERG and Co.
We were blown OUT in 6 games this year.
We barely beat ND, UMass (!), Indiana, and Illinois.
We probably SHOULD HAVE lost 2 of those 4 nailbiters.
That would have put us at 5-7 in year 3. A moribund Miss St program just went 9-4 in the SEC in YEAR 2 and handed us our ass in the Gator Bowl.
|2 years 47 weeks ago||You know what makes Michigan a "top job?"||
#1 reason: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
#2 reason: on TV every single week
If Brandon says "Hey, we're going to pay you $5 mil a year and an everyone will be able to see and admire you..."
Guess what? The Michigan job instantly becomes a BETTER job than 98% of the programs in the country.
Tradition doesn't get it done anymore. Give a coach a bigger paycheck and a bigger national stage than anyone else and it becomes a de facto better job.
|2 years 47 weeks ago||For The Record:||
It was his wife and one of his daughters that entered the press room.
Sorry, nothing scummy to report. Apparently, it was actually quite a nice moment.
|2 years 48 weeks ago||wrong||
moeller won a rose bowl and of course so did carr.
|2 years 49 weeks ago||Amen||
preach it, brother. TV and movies just love architects. However, reality pisses on architects.
I'm not even using my Michigan architecture degree anymore. Why? Because I'm making way more money as a construction project manager. Sad, really.
|2 years 50 weeks ago||damn, nice shopping!||
But yes, you are correct. I also got tickets for MUCH cheaper than what UM was trying to sell them for.
|2 years 50 weeks ago||FYI||
I ran track at Michigan.
No, I don't expect you to believe me.
And no, I don't give a fuck whether or not you believe me.
So, in summary: FOAD.
|2 years 50 weeks ago||don't forget!||
If he acts now, the DB gets - absolutely free! -
The 6th worst defense in the country
The 10th worst turnover margin in the country
The worst special teams in the country
Hurry, don't wait! This deal won't last long!
|2 years 51 weeks ago||I know and I agree with you||
I was just having fun with the haters.
|2 years 51 weeks ago||Yeah!||
Gittleson's players at Michigan were constantly overpowered by Wisconsin, MSU, and OSU. How many 100-yard games did Ron Dayne have against Michigan? I bet every time out, right?
I'm so glad that never happens anymore!!
|2 years 51 weeks ago||my heart sank until I realized the year is 2009||
I was like "how did I miss this on Monday (Dec. 13th) and then I realized the article in from 2009.
|2 years 51 weeks ago||^^^^ding ding ding^^^^||
|2 years 51 weeks ago||This was Fangio's 1st year at Stanford||
Fangio made an immediate and dramatic impact. He worked for Jim's brother on the Raven's staff. Fangio has a very impressive resume. He is not a youngster.
This guy's performance in his first year is further evidence against people who argue for the M defensive staff to stay intact for continuity's sake. F that. Defensive schemes are much less complex and it isn't uncommon to see huge improvements in a new DC's 1st year.
|2 years 51 weeks ago||That would be insane for Holgorsen to do that||
Okie State's defense is not good. WVU 's is consistently good. If Casteel wants to stay then the incoming offensive whiz HC would be a fool not to retain him.
|2 years 51 weeks ago||oops||
|2 years 51 weeks ago||Wow||
these logo ideas are all turrible.
|2 years 51 weeks ago||I think this thread has inadvertently proven||
that coming up with a good logo isn't that easy.
My initial reaction was "Printer cartridge cyan for the color? Really?" Just use that same gunmetal gray that the PAC-10 is using and the new logo would be 100% better.
The new division names are pretentious and arrogant. I can only imagine people in the other power conferences, not to mention the Ivy League, rolling their eyes at these contrived names.
Just go with "East and West" or perhaps something slightly more nebulous like "Lakes and Plains" and be done with it.
|2 years 51 weeks ago||Yeah, fuck Penn State!||
|2 years 51 weeks ago||Great Lakes Division and Great Plains Division||
Done and done.
|2 years 51 weeks ago||No, I would say a better comparison is||
Tony Madarich or David Boston. Steroid-using beasts in college then busts once they get to the league and can't juice anymore.
OSU = pay their players under the table and turn a blind eye to guys who want to juice. Of course, the sweatervest insists on being insulated from all of it so that he has plausible deniability. He's a smart guy, but don't be fooled by that choir-boy persona.
|3 years 1 day ago||just awesome||
|3 years 1 day ago||way TMI||
|3 years 2 days ago||they're correct about RR||
But I think not knowing is better.
Leaving doubt keeps the team motivated to win the Gator Bowl.
Maybe DB hasn't been able to close the deal with JH yet? If that's the case then you definitely keep RR until you know you have JH as a replacement.
If JH isn't coming then RR stays.
|3 years 3 days ago||Does he use a tee?||
|3 years 3 days ago||I think you need to consider failed 4th downs as TOs||
Those are called a turnover on downs for a reason. Also, all turnovers inside the opponents 30-yard line represent a lost opportunity to score points.
IMO, turnovers in the MSU, Iowa, and OSU games was a primary contributing factor in those losses.
Horrendous defense was the primary culprit against PSU and WI.
|3 years 3 days ago||What the fuck is Keener's problem?||
Is it because he thinks M threw Webber under the bus?
It seems like Kurt was never a big M supporter. In-state his family leans towards MSU.
An OSU booster probably gave him money under the table.
|3 years 3 days ago||I can't fucking believe a DCDS kid||
chose OSU. That is seriously fucked up. I'm going to have to give Kurt and Fred some shit when I see them again.
This really pisses me off.
|3 years 4 days ago||Hmmm. Tough question.||
I'll go with "what."
Yeah. Final answer.
|3 years 4 days ago||^^^^^ding ding ding^^^^^||

|3 years 4 days ago||The last time M was 100% healthy||
they beat a BCS Bowl team by 20 points!
|3 years 4 days ago||Don,||
This info is from former players I know personally and speak with, and what they tell me other former players that they have spoken to have expressed.
Most of the hard feeling are because of the blowout loss to OSU, but the Bust fiasco sealed it.
Again, my feelings about RR differ from theirs.
|3 years 4 days ago||ha ha||
Shoot the messenger.
You are wrong. I'll stop arguing over the intertubes with you now.
|3 years 4 days ago||Yes, it's an informal poll, chill the f out.||
I know dozens of former players. I was taken aback by how many of them now really hate RR for what he did at the Bust. Every single one of the 50-70 guys that I know and heard from don't want RR to be the coach anymore.
But who gives a fuck what they think.
|3 years 4 days ago||Don't get hung up on the actual percentage||
it's somewhere in the 90th percentile.
And hey, don't shoot the messenger.
Listen, I want RR to stay and clean house on his defensive staff!
I'm just trying to pass along information. Jeez. Whatever.
|3 years 4 days ago||98% of former M football players still alive||
now despise RR after what happened at the Bust.
I'm not saying this matters to Brandon.
And I'm not saying they are right.
I'm just passing along the fact that 98% of the living people who are responsible for Michigan being the winningest program in CFB history want RR fired immediately.
|3 years 1 week ago||Meh||
I support RR. I want him back. Period.
But, yeah, I'd be lying if I didn't admit that the Josh Groban Thing made me cringe. Like, a good old-fashioned squirm-in-my-seat-please-God-let-this-end..why-isn't-this-over-yet? kind of a cringe.
MGoBlog has the highest concentration of smart, sensitive fans who are totally fine with a Josh Groban sing-along, and that is super okay.
But it's also okay to cringe if sing-alongs to sappy teenyboppers isn't, you know, your thing.
|3 years 1 week ago||Stanford's huge leap in D performance||
Is 98% due to Vic Fangio's coaching and installation of his defense.
|3 years 1 week ago||Make no mistake: DB has already decided||
One of two things has already occurred:
1. DB has already decided to retain RR but cannot say so right now with so many of the donors pissed off about the WI/OSU back-to-back debacle. This is the 90% likely scenario.
2. DB has already decided to fire RR and already has his replacement but won't announce anything until after the bowl games in order to avoid the fiasco that happened back in 2007. This would especially be the case if the replacement is currently coaching a top 5 team with an outside shot at the MNC. This is the 10% likely scenario.
|3 years 1 week ago||that's true||
This guy's meeting with Brandon was before the OSU debacle. If the bowl game goes badly that would be another negative data point to maybe change DB's mind. Brandon plays it close to the vest, though. Which he should.
|3 years 1 week ago||That is exactly what DB is doing||
If DB made a show of support for RR after that debacle last Saturday it would only antagonize many fans who are already grumpy.
DB is laying low because he is a big-time RR supporter. That's the truth.
After the WI game I know a prominent former player who met with DB to express his grievances about RR and the state of the program. DB cut him off and jumped down his throat. This former player is now convinced that DB is giving RR at least 1 more year.
|3 years 1 week ago||NEED MOAR RAWLS!!||
Last year there was "Offense With Minor Rage" (excellent) and "Offense Without Minor Rage" (meh).
This year's offense sorely missed that fast, rangy, power back. The offense would've been downright Oregonian if it had such a running back.
MiKe Cox's size and violent running style fits that mold perfectly.
Yes, I'm still wondering WTF the deal is with Cox.
|3 years 1 week ago||ok, whatever||
Don't tell me the big Michigan and Florida sweatshirts aren't WAY more prominent than all of those other things you saw. C'mon, man.
And what's with the big picture of the player with eye black that says "We're back" under each eye. Back from what? A two year bowl hiatus? Yes, that could be another coincidence.
But maybe I am seeing what I want to see. Anyway, it is more interesting than talking about <REDACTED>.
BTW, the average high/low temps for Jacksonville is 64/45 on January 1st.
|3 years 1 week ago||You know what I see?||
I actually see -GASP! - a solid defenesive effort the entire first half.
Roh messed up a couple of chances to sack Pryor. But damn, Pryor made those plays, too, so you gotta tip your cap to TP.
I also would've like to have seen Vinopal light up Sanzenbacker on that long high pass down the middle. On replay, it looked like Ray thought he was going to be able to get the INT. With experience he will learn to just take the WR's head off in that situation.
You make those 3 plays and OSU's offense would've only scored 3 points in the 1st half!
Damn. Next year.
|3 years 1 week ago||The bowl selection order is this:||
Rose Bowl - Wisconsin
BCS At-large - Ohio State
Capital One - Michigan State
Outback - ???
Gator - ???
With the 5-way jumble of mediocrity this year, there's no way in hell the Outback takes anyone but the sexy Michigan offensive gizmo. Throw in the endless juicy bits about RR and his job status and that bowl's opportunity to beat that dead horse mercilessly and I am telling you there is no way in hell the Outback Bowl passes that up.
But if hell does freeze over, the Gator certainly snaps up Michigan and laughs at the stupidity of the Outback Bowl committee.
Just forget about the Insight Bowl. Not gonna happen. Period.
|3 years 1 week ago||Don't jump to conclusions||
I never said the ZR failures were the only reason for our lack of scoring in the first half. Michigan used many wildly successful offensive plays.
I'm just stating that 12 of the zone read plays accounted for a total of 32 yards. That's not good. We moved the ball up and down the field in the first half in spite of our many ineffective ZR plays.
|3 years 1 week ago||Go back and look||
That is a good point if an LB was always scraping to contain Denard but that wasn't happening.
|3 years 1 week ago||You've got Denard,||
the fastest player in college football, and you see him running without the ball around an uncontained edge, time and time again. And it doesn't occur to RR or Magee that hey, maybe Denard should, you know, actually keep the ball one of those times?
|3 years 1 week ago||^^^^THIS^^^^^||

|3 years 1 week ago||I totally disagree||
Firing a coach before he can complete his season is messy and negative PR.
Let the current coach finish his season with the bowl game he earned.
And let the new coach finish his season with the bowl game he earned.
Carr announcing his retirement immediately after OSU was a bad situation.
Dave won't let another messy transition happen on his watch.
My only question for Dave would be, if you're convinced RR should stay then why not end the rumors and so say now? This speculation isn't healthy for RR's program. So that makes me think RR will be fired and it will be a clean and immediate transition.
I would absolutely advise Brandon to not share his thoughts with anyone except maybe two people: Mary Sue Coleman and the next head coach.
|3 years 1 week ago||Our OL averages over 300-lbs||
Please let the "our OL is tiny" meme, perpetrated by people too lazy to do some friggin' research, die.
|3 years 1 week ago||My gripes||
Is this offense too unreliable? Expecting tiny players and track athletes to not fumble when hit by big, fast defenders is rather... optimistic. We now have multiple years of turning the ball over with regularity. This is NOT a fluke anymore.
OSU has a 27-year-old ex-professional soccer player as their kicker. RR didn't make having a reliable kicker a priority. Instead, he placed his trust in an unproven walk-on kicker. Would Tressel ever allow that to happen? That's mismanagment right there.
|3 years 1 week ago||I wonder what Jim will say?||
My God, I want a ticket to the Bust really really bad now.
|3 years 1 week ago||Holy. Crap.||
The Football Bust is going to be a circus. Can you imagine the reaction of the crowd if/when Jim is announced?
|3 years 2 weeks ago||I agree with you||
Not even GERG would have that kind of ludicrous gap responsibility.
My problem on yesterday's and today's picture page examples is that we insist on using 5 DBs and we don't even use the resultant speed advantage to any good use.
Look at Kovacs and Avery in yesterday's and today's examples.
They perform a redundant function because the guy up on the LOS is totally indecisive. Kovacs in yesterday's and Avery in today's needs to be shooting behind the line to the ballcarrier like their hair is on fire,
It's really hard to play good defense with only 9 or 10 players.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||This is bullshit:||
In 1997 we played a common opponent: Colorado. Michigan won 27-3 and kicked their ass up and down the field at will.
Nebraska was in a dogfight with Colorado, got behind by multiple scores and came back in the 4th qtr to nip them 27-24.
If you think Nebraska would've kicked our asses then you're not much of a Michigan fan in my book.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||Great information||
thanks for doing this
|3 years 2 weeks ago||Whether it is true or not||
I would prefer that my AD thinks it is true.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||You missed my point||
I am telling you that the "tough decision" Brian is referring to in his post is whether or not to overhaul the defenisve staff. When you say (paraphrasing) "I agree Brian, DB has a tough decison about whether to keep RR..." you are reading it wrong. That is NOT the decison even being contemplated.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||Excuse me but||
I will bet you one dollar that the "tough decision" that brian is referring to is whether or not to force RR to overhaul his defensive staff, presumably against RR's wishes. THAT is the tough decision.
Brandon has already decided to retain RR for next year. That one is done and done. No debate necessary.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||No, Demens messed up||
But Kenny wasn't positioned ideally at the snap, which made it harder to avoid that error.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||Calm down||
I took Brian's bullet to mean that RVB has been poorly coached.
RVB is a great kid and will be even better at football with better coaching.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||Exactly||
Name me the starters in the front 6 or 7 who haven't been in the program for at least 3 years.
Wow, we're so young up front.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||You sure about that?||
I think after the Purdue game M was #92 in scoring defense and #100 in total defense. Now we're #99 scoring D and #112 total D.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||yes, great points||
|3 years 2 weeks ago||Bulletin Board||
I think Spielman was deliberately trying to give the Michigan players some bulletin board material.
He knew what he was doing when he talked smack like this. He's clearly trying to stoke the flames of a smoldering rivalry.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||I think a big problem is||
the coaches don't recognize the capabilities/limitations of their players.
They expect too much and don't seem to be very good at teaching.
The whole D staff needs to go the day after the OSU game.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||THANK YOU!||

|3 years 2 weeks ago||Damn. I really want the helmet stickers back||
The whole "It rewards individual performance" meme is stupid.
Gee thanks, Lloyd, for getting rid of the stickers.
Hey, RR, want a good PR move? Bring back the stickers.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||WTF???||
Illinois game last year: team quits and we get trucked by 25. We only score 13 points.
Illinois game this year: team never quits, we WIN the game and score 67 points.
Yes, totally the same result!!!
Listen, if you're going to try to sell me a load of crap, just title your post "Here, I took a shit in this shoebox, take a look!" so I don't have to waste 2 minutes of my life.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||100% correct||
The only reason to read it now is to get your hate on. But I prefer not to antagonize myself like that.
Of course, the douches at M Zone all love it and thinks its totally "objective." WTF??
Gee, I wonder what side of the "Fire Dick Rod!" fence they're on?
|3 years 2 weeks ago||Martin dwarfs Lou Farigno||
Mike is the Hulk.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||Pumped up? With a stuffed toy?||
That's just crazy talk.
Everybody knows that rib tickles and baby talk are way more effective at getting young men to play like a wild pack of wolves!
|3 years 2 weeks ago||Okay, so I exaggerated to make a point. Sue me.||
I will stand by the assertion that having a 3-man DL averaging 279 pounds and at the same time fielding 5 small DBs behind them is a recipe for getting trucked in the Big Ten.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||Unless you have Ted-Washington-sized NGs and DTs,||
the 3-man front won't work. A 3 man front that averages 290 pounds doesn't make any sense. Hell, Michigan's starting 3-man front of Martin, Van Bergen, and Roh averages 279 pounds. That is just asking for failure.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||I agree with the overall picture||
but man, something needs to change on defense. The D isn't living up to even the most modest of expectations, even with the young secondary.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||NO, hard edge!||
|3 years 2 weeks ago||Not having Lewan||
was big. He has been really good against top DEs this year. Not having Shaw also hurt us. He was a pivotal contributor against Illinois. He runs the veer better than any of our other RBs.
The best excuse for the offensive ineptitude in the first halves, I think, is nerves. They come out tight because they KNOW they have to score on every possession. When they biff a wide-open play due to nothing except poor execution they get even tighter the next possession.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||Hey, I totally agree with you||
Just want to make that clear.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||I, for one, will||
rejoice if your Robinson is dead proclamation isn't just wishful thinking.
Just remember, people:
1997 was Herrmann's first year as DC.
2006 was English's first year as DC.
We're returning 9 starters on defense. If the talent is there a first year DC can produce fantastic results right out of the gate.
Continuity of the staff is always WAY overrated. GERG must go. Give the new DC total control. If he wants to keep any of the current position coaches, fine. If not, they gotta go, too.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||Well, his point is||
that all of those points and yards are garbage stats put up against a defense that is either complacent in a blowout or at that point is using a "prevent defense" scheme.
If that's what happened is true, that's a valid point. But I don't think that's completely accurate. The Michigan offense put the defenses of Iowa and Wisconsin and PSU on their heels in those second halves and had them legitimately concerned.
His post does have some merit, though. Gotta score in the first half, when the battle is joined. See: Illinois game.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||The only tweaks I'd make to RR's recruiting strategy||
Is put more emphasis on getting big kids to play defense. He needs to get some DTs with size in here, not these 250-lb "projects."
He also needs a few more power backs, not have all tiny RBs. Remember how a big, strong runner like Brandon Minor transformed this offense into an unstoppable machine because RR's spread gets the defensive players running around and at that point an RB who can break arm tackles is KILLER.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||YES!||
It would be quite easy for the offense to run a play that takes a bunch of guys right into the sideline where Meathead is standing. That would be so fucking beautiful.
|3 years 2 weeks ago||Dave Brandon needs to do this:||
He needs to see if RR has Big Ten-sized defensive players coming up through the ranks. DB needs to see if the program has big young kids who will be physically big and strong enough to hold their own against Wisconsin, MSU, Iowa, OSU, and Nebraska in the next 1-2 years.
We can't keep putting undersized kids out there. RR does realize this. But are we going to have the big 290-320 pound defensive linemen you need to compete in this conference?
Putting five defensive players on the field who weigh less than 200 pounds seems foolish. I don't care how good of athletes they are.
