Yes, I'm sure

people would be very calm and supportive if RR managed to cause Michigan to lose Denard to a transfer to Illinois or something after RR's departure.  This is beyond delusional.

Just because they did fine

in the pro style offense doesn't mean that they could have done much better elsewhere.  In 2010 Denard did historic things that no one had ever done before in the history of CFB.  Presumably, he could have done the same or better in a similar system in subsequent years.

The logic still holds

People would have been equally pissed if it came out that RR told current  spreadlike commits or near commits to drop M and go elsewhere in the Big Ten...they would not be praising his straightforward helpful nature as many are doing with Carr here.

Also, didn't Carr allegedy offer to help current players transfer when RR was announced?  Not too sure people would have been happy about RR doing the same.

I wonder

if everyone praising Carr's advice would have the same conclusion if it came out that RR lobbied Denard, Molk, Gallon, Smith, Dileo and others ill-suited for the new offense to transfer to another team in the league that runs a spread?

I realize we are talking about starters vs. a backup but the logic still holds - you could make a strong case that these players' talents would be put to better use at another school.  My opinion is that Carr should not have been involved in the decisionmaking process and should have referred all questions to the new coach.

So,

any particular reason why I lost something like 600 points last night?  I don't see a points chart anymore so just curious...

Let's be honest here

If GERG lined up Mike Martin in a rush LB position this website would be getting Bad Gateway errors from the amount of people logging in to freak out.

Wait, what?

M v SDSU is considered a top non-conference game?  Is the non-conference schedule for the rest of cfb THAT bad?  I mean, Michigan is basically playing a MAC game - I get that it's somewhat interesting due to storylines but I would hope this wouldn't make a top 100 list of cfb games to look out for on a national level.  M v ND will be much much more important and interesting.

Agree generally, but

take a look at last year's early list of visitors: http://mgoblog.com/diaries/spring-game-visitor-list

Lot of local kids but a lot of not local kids too.  Pasted list below, non-Midwest bolded:

Yes

WR DeAnthony Arnett

OH LB Percy Johnson

OH DE Bryan Baird - Said he will probably be there, not positive.

OH DB Greg Brown (commit)

MI DE Brennen Beyer

MI CB Delonte Hollowell (commit)

MI OL Anthony Zettel

FL RB Demetrius Hart (Mom coming too.)

FL S Dallas Crawford - Yes. This is a big one for Michigan
.

FL WR Sammy Watkins - Yes. Also big.

MD DT Vincent Croce - Yes, as of now

TX RB Jarrell Oliver (same school as Stonum, Herron, Woolfolk)

NJ LB Antoine Pozniak - He's coming with the "Top Prospects Family." Je'Ron Stokes dad is the founder of Top Prospects Family.

NJ ATH Miles Shuler

PA DE Deion Barnes - 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds. Same school as current wolverine Je'Ron Stokes, and his brother Malik Stokes.

NJ LB Andre Hodge - Top Prospects

Other Top Prospects Family - Ronald Butler, Tyron Stevens, Lamar McKnight

No

IN OL Tony Springmann

GA WR Justin Scott

FL DE Anthony Rabasa

PA DB Kyshoen Jarrett - No, as of now. Family might decide to come, but no for now.

OH S Ron Tanner - He has baseball.

OH DE Robert Mincey - No, he'll be at Toledo. No offer, not sure if he'll get one.

OH DT Kevin Williams -  He'll be at Nebraska, for their spring game. He was recently at Michigan for one of the practices. It seems like it's down to Nebraska and Michigan. He'll make his choice shortly after the 17th

NC LB Kris Frost - No. His family waited too long to buy tickets, so they were too expensive when they went to buy them. He's NOT going to Auburn's spring game over Michigan's, he's going to Auburn's because it's only 6 hours away. He figures he might as well go somewhere, if he can't make it to Michigan. They are trying to find another time to make it up.

AR QB Kiehl Frazier (2011) - No for the spring game. I spoke with his father, though, and they're really excited about Michigan. He said they DEFINITELY plan on making a trip to Ann Arbor. They really like Coach Smith, and are excited to see Michigan.

NJ WR Damiere Byrd - Track Meets

Maybe

MI RB Justice Hayes is going to try to make it. Not positive yet.

OH TE Ray Hamilton - There's a "strong possibility" that he'll be there. Not definite.

OH OL Aundrey Walker - Doesn't know for sure yet. It's still a possibility.

OH WR Shaq Washington - Going to try to make it. He doesn't have an offer, but Michigan is one of the few schools he's hoping to get an offer from. He thinks he fits the offense really well.

OL Matt Frazier - Didn't end up making it to practice the other week. He fell ill, and couldn't make it. He's either coming for the spring game, or one of the early games of the season. Most likely a game, though.

It's sad that we seem

to exclusively recruit from the midwest now.  Don't get me wrong-there's plenty of talent here-but everyone on this list is midwest except for one NJ guy.  I hate not seeing a single Texas, California, Florida or southern state kid represented.

I'm sure someone will come up with some defensive comment here.  I'm sure we haven't stopped recruiting elsewhere entirely, but I'm not seing too much interest coming back our way so far.

This shit reads like a horoscope

Just make generalized comments about every possibility and they are bound to be right about some stuff.  Those that want to believe these illiterate folks will point to the things he got "right" while skeptics will continue to point out the spring hype that turns out to be dead wrong.

I seriously doubt

the NCAA has the power (or enforcement mechanism, if they somehow possess the power) to regulate which subscription services coaches wish to buy on their personal computers with their own money.  Coaches will simply subscribe on their own and not through the university.

I don't see how this changes anything.

Oh noes

How can Hoke and Mattison POSSIBLY afford 9.95/mo on their paltry salaries?  I can see the first amendment to their employment agreements involving drawn out negotiations on this issue.

Does this mean

Hoke is going to create an MGoBlog screenname and start asking for paywalled information?

I will be suspicious of any future "Any Updates on Zeke Pike?" threads.

and this is why

Twitter is stupid.

daaaaaang

the sizes DO run small

I'll go optimistic and assume

his comments reference an impending commit from Max Bielfeldt.

Disagree

Why even have practices then?  "Player X, you've put in the most effort, know the playbook and consistently perform the best in practice.  That's why we're going to play Player Y over you."  What kind of message does this send?

Player Y shouldn't see the field until the players in front of him that earned the spot in practice fail to show up in games.  Think Demens overtaking Ezeh - it was clear we needed to try something else.

Hoke's comments fill me with dread

(not the good kind) and I can't shake it.  It's one thing to prefer a scheme over the other, but you must respect all schemes...especially those that have the propensity to win national championships left and right.

This, taken together with the "basketball on grass" comment re: zone blocking do not fill me with confidence.  Any fucking scheme can work with the right personnel and coaching - yes, even the 3-3-5 in the BIG MEATY BIG TEN.

I wonder how he'll react to the "gimmicky spread offense" the first time we get positively shredded by a team running that scheme.  It's bound to happen.  I'm finding comparisons to Bielema here that I don't even want to think about.

First time meeting Magnus?

This is his schtick:

  • Trash ~80% of high school recruits.  It's a pretty safe bet that about this percentage will never become more than mediocre, role players or backups.  Speak from a position of total authority because hey, you watched 3 minutes of youtube highlights and that's pretty much all you need to see.
  • When a few of the 80% of the players you trashed become big time players be sure to loudly admit your mistake and how you are pleasantly surprised and happy to be wrong.  (wow, he's so objective and even the experts miss a few!)
  • Inexplicably pump up a few low-rated players here and there to show that you really evaluate these guys (e.g., Cox).  In the face of all evidence to the contrary (player never sees the field, practice reports that player cannot grasp playbook or has a bad attitude) maintain that you are smarter than the coaches.
  • When you finally get one right about an unlikely contributor that breaks out (e.g., Minor), be sure to bring it up any every available opportunity for the next several years.  Do not mention the reasons that the person was not initially a big contributor (better guys graduating, injuries, playing poorly in practice, fumbling, etc.).
My goodness,

I am SHOCKED to find out that recruits might question the longevity of the current staff!  I mean, where on Earth would they get the idea that Michigan is the type of school that would fire a coach so quickly?  Especially defensive coordinators - it's clear that defensive coordinators come to Michigan knowing that they are here for the long haul.

Pretty funny

coming from someone making such an impossible leap of logic.  No one really cares when he said the quotes; the quotes do not mean a damn thing regarding his early entry into the NBA.

And why couldn't these

quotes be used to justify a theory that the references to future success, trying hard and dealing with difficulty deal point to his impending entry into the NBA?

Let's try this - read the quotes from Morris that say he is coming back.  Until you see something definitive that suggests otherwise, there's no need to speculate.  We have word from the man himself.

You guys are nuts

Having Manny back would have made this great team even better.  Everyone appears to want to ignore everything Manny was good at and instead focus on his "attitude issues" for which there is little evidence to support.

  • You don't think THJ would have developed better slashing skills learning from Manny?
  • You don't think having Manny out there over Stu is an upgrade?
  • You don't think having another person with decent ball-handling skills and excellent quickness would help the team?
  • You don't think having another person as a threat to drive and get to the rim helps the team?
  • You don't think Manny's quickness and length would have been great in zone defense?
  • Are you forgetting Manny's ability to hit clutch 3s?
  • Did you forget his drive and dish skills?
  • How about his ability to draw fouls and cash in at the line?
  • Do you really think it would have been detrimental to have a, you know, senior on our basketball team?  I understand that he wasn't an outspoken leader but his senior presence would not have been a problem for the team.
Worst defensive and

rebounding performance of the season?  I've watched every game this season and this one is pretty close.  I guess our D against Purdue was worse but man...we look so so so terrible.

We look like we did

in our losing drought.  Just terrible.  I thought we had finally gotten over that thing where we decide to not show up whatsoever for 10 minute stretches.

well, I hope we win the play-in game

Because we look like shit.

Thanks all

appreciate it

I don't have access

at work.

Might as well start this one early...

Any streams going out there yet?  Since it's on ESPN I'm assuming there has to be SOMETHING out there streaming the game.

Like most people, I'm at work and do not have access to ESPN360 by the way.

Yeah

I was laughing so hard I had to close my office door when I read this OP.

I'm sorry, but if BILL CUNNINGHAM is your last bastion of hope to inject some reasoned analysis into this investigation then OSU is hopelessly, irretrievably screwed.  The thought of this - I just can't stop laughing.

You are mad

that a person accused of a crime hired a lawyer and is requesting a trial.

Your argument is invalid.

The stupid, it burns.

We CAN'T address the question of whether he did anything wrong in the first place - that's for the court to decide.  Us discussing it is beyond pointless - we don't have personal knowledge of the situations, all the facts or (most of us, and especially you) a solid grasp of how the laws work.  Your hypo is ridiculous and stupid.  Something pretty much everyone can agree on is that if he's found guilty he deserves to be punished.

Your understanding of a technicality is pretty close to that of an 8 year old.  Not sure that further elaboration will help.  Regardless, the "technicality" would be that of an illegal search and seizure and a violation of constitutonal rights.  In other words, regardless of whether truly guilty or not, you are GODDAMN RIGHT I'd want him to walk free if the stop was illegal.  We are a nation of laws.  No one is above the law, especially those charged with enforcing our laws.  Cops need to follow the rules too.  To argue otherwise is to endorse a police state, Communism, etc., whatever.

Ugh, you are a moron.

Your stupidity seriously astounds me and makes me sad.  It's even worse that you are one of those people that think having a "fancy lawyer" somehow puts you above the law.

Lawyers are there to protect their clients' constitutional rights.  Period.  It's up to the jury or judge to decide the defendant's fate once all sides of the evidence are properly screened by the judge, brought forth and discussed.  There are no cases in which a fancy lawyer will get you out of a crime you are guilty for - unless you truly think the system is corrupt and bribery is rampant - only bad lawyers that fail to spot or properly argue an issue or juries/judges that simply get shit wrong.

If your case is without merit than the only thing a "fancy lawyer" will bring is a more expensive bill to go along with your fine and/or jail sentence.  A shitty lawyer can lose a meritorious case for his client, however.  The fact that you resent BE for hiring a lawyer he is comfortable with to defend his rights is sickening.  I'll stop short of calling you a Communist but you are certainly an ignorant dipshit.

Oh man

He's using his constitutional rights!  What an asshole!

People like you make my skin crawl.  No sugarcoat.

Where was Horford today?

I was surprised to see McLimans in when Metrics and Morgan picked up some early fouls.  Horford is a good defender and has offensive skills that are at least equal to those of McLimans.

Your irrational Morris hate

continues?  We'd miss the NIT if not for him.

Oh, right HE'S KILLING THE TEAM, I forgot. No emotions allowed after sweeping MSU for the first time in 14 years and sealing a Tourney bid.

I bet the scholarship cap had

I bet the scholarship cap had nothing to do with this.

Why?

Why?

A thousand times - why?

Why do people listen to idiots on talk radio that they disagree with?  Why do you willingly put dollars in their pockets and subsidize their crappy hit pieces so they can continue to pollute the airwaves?  You realize that's the model, right?  Screaming inflammatory, one-sided bullshit = the true believers tune in and nod along with the rants and the other side tunes in to conjure up some outrage so they can call in, get berated and hung up on, the true believers cackle with knowing glee and the circle of life continues.

You are the liberal that tunes in to Rush and then goes running off to complain to DailyKos about conservative bias.  You are the conservative that watches Rachel Maddow and then calls in to Rush to cry with outrage over the liberal media.  Later, Rush and Rachel probably share a beer and laugh at the sheer absurdity of the situation.

I will never understand this.

wow

I get that we have offered a shit-ton of longshots and high profile guys (the correct approach IMO), I don't get the feeling that we have a lot of early interest from these guys, which is crucial in getting into top 5s rather than being completely ignored, etc.

Yes, anything can happen, it's early, blah blah blah, but it seems like we have had more early interest from big timers at this point in past years (which didn't necessarily turn into committments, I know).

It's sad that I have to put like 350 disclaimers in a post that is a couple sentences but there you have it.  Early recruiting returns not looking great so far.  (YES I KNOW THIS CAN CHANGE OMG GIVE HOKE A CHANCE)

I'll throw my hat

into the ring for Illinois.  They aren't a school that would be "expected" to commit violations, I'd classify them as a major D-1 and they have regularly outperformed on the recruiting trail in recent years despite being pretty bad.

ND is a close second for all the same reasons.

It's nearly as amazing

as those that are on the Cox bandwagon after something like 10 carries in 3 years against the worst competition Michigan has faced in that timeframe.

Nope,

he ONLY picks cream of the crop academic all-americans.  Like Thomas Rawls.

Man,

you are failing all throughout this thread.  Are you seriously trying to say that the government can't (or, at a minimum, shouldn't) regulate how people use their property?

Wow,

do I have to put quotes around it to make it REALLY OBVIOUS that I was poking fun at his spelling of "loath" in the context of calling his view of lawyers dumb?

No,

this is why dumb people loath lawyers.  Most people don't even know that half the lawyers out there never step inside a courtroom (like me), yet we are all judged on the basis that we are criminal defense litigators trying to sell knowingly false theories to juries to ensure the freedom of child molestors.

Yeah, I can't resist

but this is just another illustration of how flawed The Process was.

Right after the OSU game DB should have either (i) fired RR after quickly sending feelers out to potential candidates (not that it matters because Hoke would have left his own open heart surgery to come coach here), or (ii) immediately endorsed RR for a fourth year.

Option (i) ends the uncertainty, gives us a shot at all available coaches (again, not that it matters if Hoke was the only target...) and allows us to maintain/shore up recruiting.  Option (ii) maintains recruiting, ensures continuity and eliminates drama.

We chose option (iii).  This caused all sorts of program turmoil, such as having your walking dead coach being contacted by other schools while trying to prepare for a bowl.  Gee, do you think all this shit swirling around contributed to our terrible performance in the bowl?  The players had notidea what/who they were playing for at the point.  It was a HUGE unnecessary distraction.  Oh, and recruiting fell off big time, though Hoke did his best to salvage what he could.

DB is a joke.

Any streams available?

No BTN :(

King of Belch,

you didn't go to Michigan and you live in Nebraska.  I'm sorry your life is so sad.

Do you have brain damage?

Serious question.

A Guide to Posting
  1. Read an fairly clear tweet from a player on the team regarding a player quitting the team.
  2. Silent, short-lived panic.
  3. Conjure up alternative explanations.
  4. Post alternative explanations; make fun of others for speculating about attrition from a tweet that COULD MEAN ANYTHING REALLY, ignoring reality at every turn.
  5. Allow for reality to set in.  Player transfers.
  6. Post "Those who stay...."
  7. Post about how deep the depth chart is at his position and mock his HS film/on-field product.
