He said in week 5 that our Speight wasn't good enough to beat the Buckeyes and they would roll. I think it was more confidence in their D, than M's offense. No reply though when I mentioned officiating throughout the game (not just the spot) and that Price was a turnstile.
|5 days 21 hours ago||More likely||
i dont think bowl games tend to have rematches from previous games in season or previous bowl matchups. Playing a bad FSU team in florida is not a great bowl game. Would rather play Washington, USC, or Oklahoma.
|5 days 21 hours ago||easily.||
Eye test wont support PSU over M especially after the game that was played this weekend. No one in the country thinks Penn State is better than M, regardless of conf title. they have a bad loss to Pitt and got smoked by M.
|6 days 4 hours ago||The knock||
on Washington is SOS. M still has 3 top 10 wins, including a potential PAC12 champion. M's 3rd best win will be Washington's first by a mile if they even win.
It could hurt them is all I'm saying.
|6 days 4 hours ago||I'm not so sure...||
The defense will be good...at the very least Boston College under Don Brown good...with slightly better athletes instead of hugely better athletes.
And a 2nd year starter Speight? If he improves on a 2400 yard season and 17/6 ratio...qb play alone could lead this team to an extra couple wins.
|6 days 4 hours ago||Same here...||
because who wants to watch Alabama vs whoever #8 is? Or OSU vs #6? i think 5 and/or 6 might be good, but 7 and 8 are almost certainly not deserving. The Game this year wouldn't have been nearly as interesting if both teams were making the playoffs regardless of the outcome.
I do agree, best 4 teams get in. Not conference champs necessarily because wacky things happen.
|6 days 21 hours ago||I second||
this. a day after a deflating loss, on a team blog...i think you're smarter than the sum of your comments. Hang out on 11 Warriors and proclaim yourself the "reasonable wolverine"
|2 weeks 2 days ago||I wonder about this though...||
I don't think his tackling is spectacular either. Yes, he gets the ball carrier down, but he doesn't consistently wrap up. His coverage against wr's leaves a little to be desired, but in the NFL that's about consistent with most safeties. And he certainly wouldn't be a liability against a rb or tight end in coverage.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||As a Colts fan||
would you go OL all day every day, or try to strengthen the defense first?
Side-note: I think De'veon Smith (in later rounds) would be solid for a team like the Colts or Packers, who need anyone who can stand in the way of a rusher...or a strong breeze.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||thanks||
as well. Fixed
|2 weeks 2 days ago||thanks,||
|2 weeks 2 days ago||I am thinking so too...||
2 years of Harbaugh's coaching, even as a back-up, you have to believe he's still pretty good.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||still...||
|2 weeks 2 days ago||Question for Coaches...||
I know the defense line usually plays gaps to control the run game. But it seems so much more effective to go 1v1 (as Seth mentioned Indiana does) and keep the linebackers clear to hit/pursue. What's the percentage you would do 1 vs the other? It seems to be a much more effective way to control the run if your blockers are occupied by DL. When I watch Alabama for example, I know they play gaps, but they occupy ALL 5 OL (sometimes with slight holds) with just their front 4 keeping their lb's almost always clear.

also...sit behind the visitor bench. The visiting fan section is in the right front corner of in the closed end...if you're standing in the end zone, with the student section at your back, right front. I think sections 6, 10, 12 ish. When I was last there, that's where the M fans were. Also be careful leaving. Students are rowdy.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||they had a better||
team last year and barely scored vs MSU. Their offense is much more one dimensional this year, and the M defense is much better than MSU's last year. It's not a foregone conclusion that they'll score very many points.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||I'd be delighted||
to face a team that relies so heavily on the pass. The teams that scare me are the teams with an intricate and well developed run game.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||Is that chalk?||
I dont think chalk has Wisky winning the conference.
OSu is probably out unless Penn State loses again.
And LSU is in the low 20's...they won't be in the Sugar bowl.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||not so sure...||
OSU has been better recently but Penn State still has a huge following, travels just as well, and gets plenty of eyeballs.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||completely agree||
It's absurd. "best team" is so subjective. It should start with undefeated P5 conference champs, then all other P5 champs, then 1 loss ccg runner ups. That should be more than enough. 2 losses in most years should eliminate teams from the playoffs, barring a wild conf champ.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||There is no way||
the committee puts in an OSU team that that didn't win its division over a PSU team that won the conference AND won the head to head.
1 loss conf champ Washington might get in over Louisville as well.
Oklahoma could get in over Louisville if they win the big 12 and chaos ensues.
The likelihood of another chaos weekend is slim. Probably chalk the rest of the way in the SEC and ACC. I still like Michigan to win the conference, so there's 3 spots.
|2 weeks 5 days ago||If PSU||
wins the conf title, and they have a head to head win over osu, they'll absolutely get in over the bucks.

when you take 5 star recruits and 1st round draft picks? And they are out of the league. Saban sells the NFL dream. A cursory glance will say hey these guys made it. A deeper look by a student evaluating colleges will reveal why a Trent Richardson didn't succeed in the NFL after being a top 5 pick. He had the best line, the best defense, and too many miles on him. He never had to learn new things to succeed. Same with their qb's. Easy to win with a clean pocket and 5 star receivers...and never leaving the warm weather. But how will you perform on the road in December in Green Bay and a ferocious pass rush? Alabama doesn't prepare them for that.
|3 weeks 5 days ago||Tweet||
|3 weeks 5 days ago||They don't produce talent...||
as much as they HAVE talent. Compared to their recruiting they have underdeveloped defensive backs and quarterbacks to an almost criminal level. Running backs seem to underperform when they don't have the biggest players on the field blocking for them. And the lbs have difficulty when the best DL in cfb isn't keeping them free and clear.
They do Amari Cooper and Julio Jones (depsite being underused in college) so there's that...
|3 weeks 5 days ago||When I was||
24, I was dating a girl at Randolph Macon, and would scrimmage against the girls team at the end of their practices. I've also played 7 on 7 with various flag football teams against high school teams skill guys. But with the NCAA being so restrictive, I applaud Saban for finding the loophole.
|3 weeks 6 days ago||I don't mind Danny||
and he came out and told everyone to stop saying the Bama LSU game was NOT "great football" just cause they are in the SEC.
Also Trevor Matich called out the committee saying that Bama has a terrible SOS and hadn't beaten anyone. Then he walked it back once Finebaums callers started tweeting him.
|4 weeks 1 day ago||Is it just me||
or were St Juste's highlights produced by the BTN crew?
|4 weeks 2 days ago||Do you think Kevin Wilson will leave?||
He's a good coach, if a PAC12 job opens up? Or a school like UNC (Fedora could be on the move), or an SEC East School? Easier path to wins. He could do well in the Big 12 also.
|4 weeks 2 days ago||I agree about||
Minny, but maybe the best they hope for is 9 wins? Maybe another Leidner (ie: NFL level QB play lol) can give them an edge.
|4 weeks 4 days ago||Alabama's flaw is interesting...||
and it's usually the result of poor coverage/tackling from the secondary, which is odd considering Saban's a DB coach.

|5 weeks 2 days ago||right...||
and "every game is a super bowl?" Like beating unranked Ole Miss? beating Tennessee that almost lost to App State? Beating Arkansas that was just curb stomped by Auburn?
|5 weeks 2 days ago||Bama has d-line depth...too||
and Cristobal is a monster d-line coach. At the very least, he is AS good as Mattison, with less swag. The thing I would point out though is this...Hand is in his 3rd year and is coming off the bench, still...as a 5 star prospect. He rarely played as a frosh, has 36 tackles and 7 sacks in 2.5 years. Most of his frosh plays were in garbage time, and even then he didn't get a lot of burn. Harbaugh is doing things TOTALLY different, and kids notice. They want to play, even if they aren't the BEST defensive end in the country.
|5 weeks 2 days ago||But...||
Auburn has played Arkansas State(326 yards) and LA Monroe (251 yards). Does a top 10 defense give up over 300 yards to an FCS school?
Replace one of Michigan's P5 opponents with an FCS school like Rutgers and how much better would their defensive stats be?
|5 weeks 2 days ago||I don't know if anyone is||
assuming those things, rather pointing out how those things can contribute to having your defense on the field more, or more frequently. 2 teams running each type of offense can still have a 13 play 80 yard drive, but one takes 3 minutes and the other takes 8.
|5 weeks 3 days ago||Before even reading the article...||
I would guess yes. 1st, your defense is on the field for more possessions/plays. And as evidenced by the Rich Rod years, a 3 and out in a fast paced offense puts yoru defense on the field less than 5 minutes (of real time) and 1 minute (of game time) after coming off. 3 or 4 3 and outs per game, can really take it's toll.

Well all the big strong fast athletes are from the south (/s) all the tall athletes are from the northeast. Joking but in all seriousness, basketball has the highest percentage of major sports with athletes having elite athletes in their families. Elite athletes typically play pro and live near large cities base don their careers. Not many pro teams in Alabama, Mississippi etc.
I know a kid who is a top 30 player in 2019 in football. He has waning interest in UNC because they are a basketball school. That matters to kids. If you can go to Va Tech for example and have a raucus crowd, or UNC where you will never be more important than the basketball team....where would you go?

|7 weeks 5 days ago||If Michigan beats OSU||
and he has a return for a td to ice the game? It''s still a popularity contest. If he has a big game against OSU in a win, including a signature moment? I think he easily gets it. No one else in college football is going to have THAT much on the line except for Barrett. 2 vs 3 matchup for conference champs and playoff birth? If he shows up big in that game, he wins.
|7 weeks 5 days ago||I went to the MSU game||

I was pissed that they lost, but I was in Schembechler right after the game and the players weren't AT ALL upset. making evening plans, joking around...gave me some perspective. I shouldn't care more than they do. I follow more closely, but am less affected by losses.
|7 weeks 6 days ago||maybe||
position changes? Harbaugh has played 4 RB's this year already, could be more if Walker and Johnson are healthy. Also we've seen 7(?) receivers so far?
It seems that instead of a redshirt year, he's having a more NFL approach which is, make your way on special teams.
plus this OL class is probably gonna be at 7. How many more do you want?
|7 weeks 6 days ago||smh...||
2 hurdles in the first clip..and I knew it was a bad idea.
|7 weeks 6 days ago||so how about||
that Indiana pass defense? Still impressed with 93 yards passing...37 of which on 1 throw? He missed wide open guys all day.
|8 weeks 2 days ago||talent gap isnt||
as wide as you think. bottom of the roster NBA guys are about the same level or worse than the top college players. Basketball is such a streaky sport. A college team winning is very explainable, a better shooting night for example. If there was such a huge talent disparity, players wouldn't so easily transition to the pro game after 35 college games.
|8 weeks 2 days ago||but||
Against Rutgers. that's not proof of him being the best all time passer in school history. If he can't make those throws against tougher coverage, do they struggle?
|8 weeks 2 days ago||Ideally you||
want football to be happening during a visit. Spring football is the best time to visit from a coaches and parents perspective. The kids prefer game days because the atmosphere is usually awesome. Spring practice allows kids to see how practice goes, get a true feel for the coaches in action, and they get specialized time because there is no game prep or game during the visit. There are also kids on campus and professors are all around. Notice how many of the stories from the spring had harbaugh hanging out with the kids, walking down the street, taking pics, bbq at the big house games, as opposed to Fall/game week visits are locker room pics, and maybe 1 pic with the coach in the office or SH.
|8 weeks 2 days ago||basketball is different though||
I think it's not absurd to think a talented college team could beat an average or bad pro team in a 1 off game.
|8 weeks 2 days ago||This happens||
every few years. Remember when Bama was supposedly as good as a few NFL teams? And now a few players from that Bama team that were supposed to be really good flamed out of the league? Dee Milliner and Barrett Jones come to mind.
What it does make me think about though are what are OSU's weaknesses. Anytime they are mentioned, it's usually followed by swallowing or spitting...never a real critique of anything they do poorly. I've seen JT Barrett miss quite a few throws, lock on to recievers, and isn't great fitting the ball into tight spaces. As a senior, you just have to figure this is who he is, and not something he's going to get better at in 6 weeks.
|8 weeks 2 days ago||thanks..||
|8 weeks 2 days ago||yes because||
at some point that school will have 4 and 5 star players, and if you have a relationship with the school and coaches you have an advantage. Also proximity allows the players to come to campus more often which is always a benefit. Finally throw in kids who go to MSU and aren't recruited by M...they havea chip, and chips fuel DISRESPEKT
|8 weeks 4 days ago||This is..||
spectacular! Learned a lot.
|8 weeks 4 days ago||Is there any reason...||
other than "tradition" to not want a prime time game? I feel like there's a small minority of people who do NOT want Michigan football to look how it did 30 years ago.
|8 weeks 5 days ago||I was there too...||
and it was about a typical turn out for a maryland football game.
|8 weeks 5 days ago||It's coaching.||
Great coaches don't need more than 2 years. Look at how many coaches win titles in their 1st or 2nd year. Could be Harbaugh this year, Tressell won his 2nd year, Meyer at Florida I think, Saban 2nd or 3rd year, Stoops at OU. Great coaching is immediate. Hell look at Hermann at Houston, soon to be Texas.

|9 weeks 2 days ago||they haven't||
"proven" anything. If they lose 3 games the rest of the way...maybe 4 without a kicker, which is at least a strong possibility...will you feel like beating MSu and LSu "proved" something? LSU is AWFUL this year..and MSU is ranked because of disrespekt" only. Not talent...or recruiting.
|9 weeks 2 days ago||it will if he has to cover a tight end||

Umm...do the have a 5'9 corner and a 5'6 safety? I'd imagine a huge day for the tight ends across the middle.
|9 weeks 3 days ago||Yeah,||
he can spend the next few weeks looking for a new school, instead of practicing with Bama, and enroll somewhere else in January. Plus, how much qb coaching is he getting at Bama? He goes and works with Whitfield for 3 months, he'll probably come out better.
|9 weeks 3 days ago||Thoughts and Prayers||
with you. Stay strong
|9 weeks 4 days ago||Why?||
Unlike many people on tv and radio, his logic is sound. Wisconsin got 4 turnovers to beat MSU...and beat 2 pretty bad offenses. Michigan is home, have "probably the best defensive line in college football" and more talent on the edges. That's better than some of the people who still think the LSU and MSU were worthy of their top 10 rankings when Wisky beat them.
|9 weeks 4 days ago||Yeah, I don't watch much ESPN anymore...||
because of it. I watch games, and CFB Live sunday mornings if M wins...and I listen to radio at work. I appreciate the BTN more, even though they don't always have more than a cursory glance at the specifics.
|9 weeks 4 days ago||goddammit!||
He's going to lead Sportscenter for another week now.
|9 weeks 4 days ago||No.||
I'm not convinced Wisky is all that good. I think they are who we expected...solid 9 win team. They are likely to lose their next 2 and who knows at Iowa or Nebraska. LSu is a dumpster fire and the one year MSU was given respect without earning it, is the year they should probably have it prove it.
|10 weeks 4 days ago||I think it's||
quite possible he wins it because all of the preseason favorites are underwhelming. Watson and Fournette would not have lost to Peppers if they had good seasons. But guys like Ward Jr and Jackson might lose out to a player from a traditional power.
|12 weeks 4 days ago||Not sure...||
Depends on who it is. 2 loss SEC Champ gets in over Houston, Michigan or OSU as conf champs with 2 losses get in over Houston (unless OSU loses to Oklahoma). It's not just about wins, their SOS is terrible. What if Louisville loses or isn't ranked by the end of the year? Their resume may hold them back. Beating Oklahoma and Louisville won't matter as much as beating combinations of Wisconsin, Michigan, MSU, OSU, Iowa or Bama, Ole Miss, Georgia, Florida, TAMU.

Grew 9 inches in high school and only gained about 35 lbs, so I went from solid tb/mlb to 150lb wr/s. And my senior year I went to a high school that had probably 10-15 D1 guys, and even more D2 guys. I wasn't interested in spending my senior year in a wheelchair.
Coached little league football and basketball, assistant wr /db coach for a year in high school.
My playing days now consist of flag football, which is competitive in the DMV area. Antwan Randle-El qb's in our league, few NFL flame outs, couple retired players, number of former D1 players and A LOT of D2, D3 guys. Also about 50% IT guys, gov't contractors, and folks who went pro in something other than sports.

There are a few things at play here.
Take your typical 6'0 mobile qb in college who won't play qb in the NFL. Is he better served playing cb or wr? now you are taking 6/7 roster spots per team vs nearly 20-25 if you count fs,cb, tb, wr. if not more.
Going to the right high school/camps, and playing for the right coach. Case in point, Do you Josh Metellus is at Michigan if he is at a 3* high school in western Florida?
If his family doesn't have the ability to travel to get scholarships offers?
Despite everyone's opinion, the NFL still only has 17% of it's players that have "elite" athletes in their family. So I would expect that the answer would be hard work more than genetics.
How many players on the roster have you heard about having elite bloodlines? Peppers, who is the best athlete on the team, arguably? J. Lewis? Any of the running backs? Jake Butt?
|26 weeks 3 days ago||that seems to||

Do you know how many kids are held back in school? Depending on what month you're born in, determines when you can start school, and there is a gray area, usually sept/oct where you can go either way. So you can have an undersized, under-developed physically and mentally kid compared to his classmates, or you can hold him back so that he will be the same age as everyone.
And yes, I certinly would. I was 5'3 in 9th grade. I would expect my son to be similar. If I thought he had the desire and a legitimate opportunity to not have to pay for college? why would I not start him a year later in school? Offending your sensibilities would be well worth a $20k to $100k college education.
Scholarship might be JUST football for you, but it means a lot more to a lot of people, ie: the value of a free college education. More parents train their kids to get free school than to get a professional athlete.
|26 weeks 4 days ago||my only debate with this...||
is how much of athletic ability is genes, and how much is training? If you are naturally a flabby 275, but at age 17 you hit the weight room, and get to a svelte 305, and shave a half-second off your 40 time...that muscle and speed isn't in your genes. Now being 275 is genetic, but that alone isn't enough.
|26 weeks 4 days ago||Well...||
|27 weeks 2 days ago||It'll be someone who doesn't||
It'll be someone who doesn't have to reach for a P5 gig. Plenty will open up next year, why deal with whatever issues are coming. Maybe someone under the radar or overlooked for P5 jobs may take it and be in over there head. Or get a pro coordinator who needs 2 years before a Hc spot like BoB.
|27 weeks 2 days ago||It could be statistically. 3||
It could be statistically. 3 cupcakes which could result in a total and some weak or rebuilding B1G offenses, could statistically put M in elite company. Outside of OSU, who is the best offensive player we'll face all year? Any teams other than OSU that wouldn't cause extreme outrage if they scored 28?
|27 weeks 3 days ago||It may not be Harbaugh,...||
But it will be someone. Coaches don't grow on trees, and regardless of what he did, no one will care in 6 months. Tressell is worshipped at OSU and is now working at another University. JoePa will be a legend until the end of time in parts of PA. He'll get a QC job, or analyst position before long...maybe not another HC job. But then again, if you're a mid-major and you can get Art Briles for cheap? Not advocating, but would anyone be surprised?
|27 weeks 3 days ago||Quite true||
Receivers are also dependent on QB ability to be successful. To really take a look, you would have to look at the qb situation they were drafted into.
And Randy Moss wasn't drafted into a dynamic offense, they BECAME dynamic because he was such a talent.
The biggest transitions in the NFL at WR are route running and separation, which is easier at the college level. Julio was always an athletic freak, so was Moss. But guys that are 6'1 needs to run excellent routes and be quick twitch because every corner in your division is better than 10 of 12 teams you played in college.

At a game back in 06 I met a guy who was an AD at a private Ohio high school, and his first move to was to change the school helmet to a winged helmet. I like change and I live in the DC area...it was nice that Michigan played at Maryland on my birthday weekend. I also travel to NY a few times a year so it's nice not having to travel to A2 or some relatively small midwestern town to watch a game. I would love to see the addition of any of the following(realistic or not) Oklahoma, UNC, Duke, UVA, VT, ND, GT or Texas. VT has an awesome stadium and would be a lot of fun to watch Michigan play there at night. UNC-Duke are supposed to be a package deal I think, would love to see them compete in the B1G in basketball every year.
|43 weeks 6 days ago||I mentioned this before||
but there is really a different culture at OSU and UM. It "feels" different on the campuses. Facilities aside, the vibe you get from the people, the attitude around campus...feels at home. COmpare it to a company like Deloitte or ESPN that overwork and underpay their staff, because your reward is having worked for them...opposed to tech companies that have every benefit imaginable. It comes down to preference...which is probably the most diplomatic way of putting it.
|44 weeks 5 days ago||I agree...||
The only stories we've heard are from de-committed players and their coaches. We have no idea what was told to players and when. Let him earn his paycheck, because he's earned the right to make those choices.
Ultimately, there will never be a shortage of players who desire to play at Michigan, and if the national media continues to write bad articles...so be it. Who are the most hated football teams in America? I'd bet the Patriots and Alabama..they seem to be doing ok despite the public vitriol.

Babe Ruth played against fishermen and warehouse workers, and all caucasian players. It is a very legitimate argument to suggest that he wouldn't have been as good against other full-time professional baseball players. You think Ruth could hit 714 home runs on today's MLB pitchers? Seriously?
Even Joe Montana has said he couldn't compete at the same level if he played today because offenses AND defenses are much more complex than when he played. (Also, salary caps - the Dallas and SF teams of the 90's wouldn't happen today)
Being great in your era doesn't make you automatically great in any era. Similarly, there are Academy award winners who won because of a down year for movies. You're assuming the someone who was revolutionary in 1925 would be equally revolutionary in 2015? Or that a physical specimen from 1955 would stand out as much as one from today?
In the 60's NFL offensive linemen were on average 6'3 250. http://www.businessinsider.com/nfl-50s-tim-tebow-would-have-been-an-offensive-lineman-2011-10?op=1
Today that's an average TE or an undersized DE. There is nothing wrong with the game being better, faster, and smarter than it was, and it doesn't take anythign away from former greats if they couldn't compete today.
|46 weeks 5 days ago||If I were to venture||
a guess..he does what Mike Dantonio does, but with better players. I would think there are 10 coaches who could've won a title with Bama last night. I also think if a handful of coaches were in charge of Clemson, then they could've won as well.
Brian Cook (I'm assuming)
I think Herman, Harbaugh, Kelly, and Meyer could've beat Alabama with Clemson last night. They are some of the best offensive game planners today.
Despite winning, Did anyone feel that Kiffin excelled this year as an OC considering the talent he had?
|46 weeks 6 days ago||Great Offenses are||
2 dimensional, and great defenses are always GREAT against the run, turning the offense 1 dimensional. Great defenses stop the run with a defensive line, and little else, and do no tneed to blitz to pressure the qb. If an offense can't run, and the qb has to drop back and pass 50 times a game...against 6 or 7 in coverage with no balance, how can they be successful?

|49 weeks 3 days ago||They really are different schools||
with different cultures. Everyone will say, they have a family atmosphere, but not all schools have a "friend" atmosphere. Michigan coaches and players used to hang around after practice and talk with each other, shoot the shit...no one in a particular rush to leave. I didn't notice it, but it was pointed out to me by other around me. That is unusual, because even when I played football, after the final whistle, it was a rush to go do something else.
I'll put it like this: If I wanted a more urban (no pun intended) environment, as far as the people I was around, then I would go to OSU. If I wanted a suburban private school type environment, then I would go to UM. One of the things I passed along, is that OSU has more attractive girls...the difference is at Michigan, the same girl has parents who are CEO's. Yes, it's a stereotype but it illustrates the attitude. My family friend who played at M married a girl on the softball team whose dad is the owner of a very profitable business on the west coast.
|49 weeks 3 days ago||Not so fast||
my friend. When you were 18 and a senior in high school, girls are one of the most important things in life. Getting laid by a high school girl and a college girl are different/ Don't underestimate how important it is. Every recruit I have spoken with about visits has talked about the girls.
As far as Hoke, he is a great guy. The first time I spoke with him was when he visited my friend Coach Harris, and was told that I was a big fan. So John called me, and handed Hoke the phone and he talked with me for about 10 minutes. He is everything you would expect. He is the guy you would trust your kid with, because there is no question he cares about what he does. He could succeed in a place like Wisconsin or a Notre Dame. He isn't the kind of recruiter that can outmaneuver guys like Saban, Harbaugh, or Meyer, but with a strong brand behind him, he can pull in a top 20-25 class every year.
Not that my opinion matters, but I agree with him being in over his head. Had he hired a better staff, then things most likely would be different.
|49 weeks 4 days ago||Actually true||
It could be the difference between speaking with dean of a college, and just a professor, or someone else just giving you a run-down of the program. The red carpet gets rolled out for the big time recruits. Other guys don't get as much attention.

London was underperforming at UVA, because he couldn't develop talent. They have 2 5* players on that defense and they are somehow worse than they were coming out of high school.
|49 weeks 5 days ago||I posted a breakdown||
of an OSU visit and a Michigan visit in the past. I have been to Michigan on recruiting visits twice. I have second hand knowledge on visits to Maryland, Indiana, OSU, SoCar, Florida, FSU, Clemson, Tennesee, UVA, VT, UNC, Duke etc.
First, visits during games are not ideal. There isn't enough time for coaches to spend with recruits because of game day. Keep in mind, most games are at noon or 3:30, so the kid will be lucky to talk to the coach more than 5 or 10 minutes pre-game. During the 2012 OSU/UM game, We were allowed to go to the coaches locker room with Urban for about 5 minutes, while the other recruits were eating. Our group also included the #1 player in the country, so that is unusual.
Ideally, unofficial visits take place during spring practice and you follow up with an OV during a game the following fall. It's a good opportunity to see coaches in practice, and talk with other kids and recruits. Hoke and Mattison's wives were always around. so there really was a family atmosphere.
On visits, recurits and parents will tour the campus, including the indoor facilities (M has 2 indoor fields), Schembechler Hall, another building which is a study facility for athletes. They have an M-Pact program which is used to essentially mentor kids about their future. Most senior football players will have 5 more years of football in their life. The ones that get to the NFL will have about 8. The lucky ones will have 15. What is left after that? It's eye opening for many kids who never thought about it like that. They have programs where they can pair current ahtletes with former athletes whether it is career advice or help dealig with situations. Former players actually still use the M-Pact program, including guys in the NFL or who are recently out of the NFL. Another example would be allowing a student-athlete to shadow someone in the career of their choice, to evaluate whether ther would want to pursue that career.
There is ususally a meeting with the dean of the school, that the recruit intends to major. In the evenings, recruits usually go with players and parents will hang out with a coach or other parents.
There is also a tour of the locker room, with jersey's laid out, helmets, etc and other items that recruits are interested in for photo ops. They are allowed to walk through the tunnel and out onto the field as well. VT will allow you to take a picture with anyone jersey that doesn't belong to a current player.
On UV, you must pay for everything. Even meals in the facility will be charged. We paid to eat at the buffett at OSU. (the food was meh) Maryland has a fantastic buffett and a patio on one end of the endzone where recruits can sit and watch the game. On OV, 1 hotel room for parents, and 1 for the player is paid for. Many charges are reimbursed, as opposed to paid for outright. Compliance officers are around the entire time, for example making sure that the recruit comes back to his room at some point for the night if other people are in the room with him (for example a cousin or a teammate on an UV) otherwise it could be a violation.
On day2 of a weekend visit, typically Sunday morning, recruits will meet with position coaches. They will watch film and coaches will generally show how they plan to use a particular player in their system. (For D, Hand, Mattison was showing clips of all the things he did with Terrell Suggs)
What pushes kids over vary obviously. Coaches play a huge role of course, but second to that is how much fun they have with the current players, probably more than how well they get along with other recruits in their class. For the most part, expecially for the top guys there is minimal difference between the big schools. Facilities and perks are all top notch, fans are all excited and crazy.

I'm a Michigan fan and those are the only games I EXPECT to be able to watch. Anything else I watch is a bonus. She doesn't fight much on Sundays, as I usually put Redzone on and she peruses Facebook or something. Otherwise, we will be out and I don't make a big deal, and hope I can check it out at a bar or something.
If we have plans during Michigan games, she is usually understanding as I watch it on my phone.
I used to watch a lot more, but I don't subject her to it, because she's indifferent. I would prefer for her to stay indifferent as opposed to hating it.
|1 year 4 days ago||Similar incident happened at Ohio State||
when I visited with D. Hand. The coaches didn't inform the proper people, and they wouldn't let us drive to the Hayes Center to park. Even after the officers spoke with the coaches, because we didn't already have passes, we weren't allowed in. So we had to park about 2 miles away (Columbus on Michigan gameday), and pay $40 to park in someone's driveway. The weather was about 35 degrees and raining. It was the beginning of the end of his interest in OSU.
|1 year 1 week ago||Completely Agree...||
but, what you're failing to realize is that asking other Michigan football fans...on a Michigan football blog...in a board post is the wrong place to ask questions about where to watch Michigan games.
I have posted before looking for out of town bars, and I had a fantastic time in New Orleans at Prytania Bar, with the alumni club, and a fantastic atmosphere, despite Satan's punt.
The thing I have noticed is that people from the cities in question love answering and sharing feedback, but the snark comes from everyone else...I would imagine the people that always watch from their couch, or their bar in the city they never leave.

Aside form that, does he evn have NFL aspirations? Would he rather start his medical schooling/career?

But how many players in the NFL are worth a first round pick? I'd be surprised if there were 10. So you trade away parts to build a team full of 2nd/3rd round players over a period of 3/4 years? Assuming that ALL of those guys pan out, you have a competitive team in a few years. Also assuming you find a qb during that time.
|1 year 4 weeks ago||I concur...||
because rookie defensive ends make an immediate impact...when? I also have a very good friend who is knowledgeable (and in the know) on such things, that Bosa is not expected to be anything more than a serviceable NFL player.
|1 year 5 weeks ago||I don't know about that...||
As a coach...you teach the kids how to play within your offense, and a lot of it is predicated on simplifying things, so you can play faster. If he has too much information, or is busy reading through defenses at the college level (that are set up to p[lay mostly spread teams) then he might not be as successul. On top of that, if he is only running a couple different routes, he has no use to read defenses.
The question arises, does a coach owe it to his school to get the most out of an athlete or does a coach owe it to the athlete to make sure he has the longest career? A college coaches job isn't really based on how successful his guys are in the NFL, only how many wins he has in college right?

I have a cool story bro moment involving Green. So he went to my church when I was growing up and my mom and his wife were friends. I was at his house, I was probably 9 years old, one day playing him in Super Tecmo Bowl...he picked the Raiders, I chose the Skins. He's up 5, last play of the game, he throws a deep pass, I pick it off...with HIM, and house it for the win. I still give him a hard time for not trusting his teammates more!
|1 year 9 weeks ago||I think it's reasonable||
Clearly, I am biased as well...but if an SEC team had a strong defense, with an elite HSP, that you cannot run against...consider that with an average run game, and a moderately decent qb...then you have just about every mid-level SEC team, every year. It's Bama to a tee, Tennessee, SC, Georgia. If Michigan had the same roster, same coaching pedigree, and same schedule but played in the SEC, they might be entered into the conversation at this point.
As Scott Van Pelt would say...how good is your good?

Hell you can't even recognize MSU uniforms anymore, but the sentiment seems to be that Nike will be some sort of return to the way the uniforms were?
At some point Michigan will pull out special unis again, and I'm not any more comfortable with Nike's creative team designing them, than Adidas. With Nike, it's possible we could look like every other team on Saturday, just in different colors.

That being said, when I went on tours with Hand, Burrell, and Settle I wasn't impressed necessarily with his presentation. Not because he didn't do a good job, but as a lifelong fan, there are things I would've mentioned or discussed that he seemed to gloss over or ignore. We had been there the entire day, and I told Coach Hoke and Chris that we hadn't heard the fight song the entire time we were there. (Devin Gardner was in the room, and was forced to sing...and he has a great voice btw, a deep, classic musical talent that was reminiscent of....I digress)

with conference pride being bullshit, however i think Kentucky taking pride in Alabama/LSU dominance is different than hoping one of your conference-mates don't shit the bed on a national scale. The perception of the B1G is already low, and if Ohio would've got smoked by Bama, then it does hurt all of us. When ranking come out next year, Big Ten teams are moved down a notch or two because they are in the B1G, not because they deserve it.
