I was part of the MMB when we transitioned from the visitors sideline to the student section, and I seem to remember that part of the rationale was to make us feel more a part of the student body, which is ironic since now they can't hear the band at all unless they're piped in through the speaker system.
We also got permanent bleachers (including more space for the tubas and drumline) instead of being squeezed into section 40/42 (or temporary bleachers/chairs on the field for the big games). While the additional space was nice, I think we had more fun w/ the dance team on the visitors sideline, and it made rushing the field a lot easier (2005 Penn State anyone??).
I won't spoil a Michigan Marching Band secret, but I will say that every year during Band Week there is a special speaker who comes to speak to entire band, and in particular the freshmen. Well my freshman year (2004) it happened to be Bo. I can't remember a word he said, but I remember that the reaction from all of the upper classmen and the freshmen who were from Michigan was absolutely electric that we had the great Bo Schembechler coming to speak to us. However, I'll never forget my fellow freshman friend who was from Pennsylvania and had absolutely no clue who this "Bo" guy was. He was just kept asking people, "Who's Bo?" but we were all too mesmerized by Bo's words to answer him. Had I known then that he would no longer be w/ us in 2 years, I probably would've tried to get a picture w/ him, and it remains one of my biggest regrets to this day that I didn't.
Being a recent transplant from Michigan to the heart of ACC country in North Carolina (I live right in the middle of Duke, UNC, and NC State), this guide helps tremendously. Thanks!
It's hard to answer the band amplification question, especially as a former bando myself. When they have the timing right between the band and the PA speaker, it sounds great. When they don't, it just sounds like an awful echo, espeicially if you're sitting close to the student section. I think it gets better as the season goes on, but the first game this year was awful.
I don't think Les was ever our first choice; Harbaugh had that distinction. At this point, Miles is likely the first choice of the non-Harbaugh options.
I think the most depressing part about this situation is how arrogant he acted during the segment on Outside the Lines earlier this weekend (Friday?). Clearly showed no remorse whatsoever for anything that he did, and basically threw his adopted mother under the bus. Basically sounded like he had disowned her after all she did to raise him by taking him off the streets of Cambridge, Mass.
I think I would keel over and die after that one. Sadly neither one exists in Brier Creek (that I know of), so I'll have to wait to try out my hypothesis.
You clearly haven't consumed enough Cookout yet, as I think it easily one-ups the cholesterol count from Cottage Inn. As far as pizza though, you're right, nothing like it here in Carolina.

I know Jackson's coming back to coach the RB's and Borges is the OC, but are any of the other position coaches on board yet?
Maybe we'll start playing basketball on grass, just like Hoke thinks we already do.
