Michigan thought enough of…

Michigan thought enough of the accomplishment that a plaque recognizing Owens' achievement can still be found at Ferry Field.

That's really great - thanks…

That's really great - thanks for sharing.

As you said, the Rose Bowl is a grind for the band. I'm not comparing it to what the football team has to do, but it's not a straight vacation. January 1 starts around 3:30-4:00 am for breakfast before the Rose Parade and doesn't really stop. But, when the team wins in Pasadena (as you and I know), it's a tremendous feeling. And it's fantastic to hear that Trente shared some of that joy with the band.

I can only imagine how much cooler it was for you (and a couple of other folks I know) to watch your own kids march in the Rose Bowl n years after you last did it. It's special just on it's own, but getting to celebrate postgame on that field is absolutely tremendous, and I hope you got to enjoy your kids' celebration to the fullest.

My son is also an out-of…

My son is also an out-of-state senior, and I think he, too, is at a bit of a loss. He's also in ROTC and doesn't know if there will be a commissioning ceremony or it's out along with the rest of the commencement-related celebrations.

But, as others have said, your (very understandable) disappointment and frustration with this will fade over time, especially as you get on to bigger and better things (they're out there, I promise!). Congratulations in advance on your graduation, and good luck in whatever comes next. You'll always be a Wolverine.

We've always named our cars;…

We've always named our cars; I started doing it in high school. Our cars currently are:

Sandman - Honda Pilot, named for its color. My wife was thinking of "Mr. Sandman" by The Chordettes, I was thinking of "Enter Sandman" by Metallica. *shrug*

Rock Lobster - Toyota RAV4, blue in color (my wife likes the very rare blue rock lobster). My girls call it B3 (Big Bitchin' Blueberry)

Humpty Dance - 2001 BMW 325i. This was a gift from my uncle to my son, and it had some suspension problems early on, hence the name.

Rocinante - Nissan Altima; we like the Expanse novels.

Schedule a Date

Lots of good advice already that I'd echo. One other suggestion: Make a date for just you and Mom no more than six weeks after the birth (I recommend four weeks). If you have family close, or good friends who you trust to watch the baby for a couple of hours, ask them to do so, especially right after they've said "let us know if there's anything we can do to help." Getting just a little time is important, less so for a break from the baby, but more so to remind yourselves why you married each other in the first place.

My wife and I had no problem going out with our babies (we took our first-born to a minor league baseball game when he was a week old, wrapped up like an over-stuffed burrito), but getting time to ourselves, even just to get a quick bite to eat and stop at the grocery store, made a huge difference for us.

The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled

was convincing the world he didn't exist.

Chili

The last 12 years or so, we've hosted a "Chili Bowl" party. Have three different chilis on the stove now, expecting at least 3-4 more from guests.

I know you!

gkat90, I think we were roommates for my sophomore year (1990-91). Also a stick, same first name as you. Hope you and your wife are doing well and enjoy the alumni band. I'll keep an eye out for you if I make it to watch Saturday rehearsal.

At the game, not alumni band

I'll be at the game (my son is a HS senior on his campus visit Friday and band rehearsal/game on Saturday), but no alumni band for me this year.

Yeah, I overlapped with you

Yeah, I overlapped with you some (89-92), and there was definitely a raunchy version of the OSU fight song, although I don't think it approached what's being reported about the OSU band.

Ironman Hawaii

In 2009, I got lucky and received one of the lottery slots to do the Ironman World Championship race in Kona. I felt like a VW bus surrounded by Ferraris and Lamborghinis.

I was going to say Pat

I was going to say Pat Fitzgerald, but apparently he went straight from playing at Northwestern to coaching. Anybody know why he didn't pursue an NFL playing career?

Great schools don't get great

Great schools don't get great faculty by just waving their hands and saying "come teach and research here!" They identify good people and pursue them with salaries, resources, etc. commensurate with their abilities. Should be the same for coaches, too.

IIRC

It's based on his username at other sites, perhaps pre-dating mgoblog.

Ooh, forgot about the Brady incident.

Still, the gif captures my likely reaction if Harbaugh comes home.

It's Miguel Herrera!

Yes

But only if your avatar is your high school yearbook photo.

Yes - f*** that wind

I did Kona several years ago (I got in on the lottery), and the wind on the return just about broke me. 20-25 mph headwinds after 85 miles in the saddle sucked. Big time.

At least you're not making

At least you're not making sweeping generalizations based on limited data.

It should be

For exactly this situation.

Borda method

The Borda method of voting (used by this and pretty much all college sports polls) can have all sorts of counter-intuitive results where, for example, none of the voters ranked Michigan and Ferris State any differently relative to each other after last weekend, but changes in how other teams are ranked can flip them in the overall ranking.

One of my son's high school

One of my son's high school classmates died last weekend (only 15) from cancer.

Best wishes to you and your wife, and keep fighting.

Jock-a-matics

is what we called them when I was an RA at South Quad in the early 90s. Two athletes moved into my hall at the semester break, and I was told that part of the reason was to get away from some of the jock-a-matics. The first day the new telephone directories (hooray 90s!) were published for the semester, I counted no fewer than 8 young women on my hall with the directory in hand, checking where the guys lived.

Uh oh

Cal Tech better duck and cover.

^^This

I've been a grad student and/or employee at Notre Dame for the last 10+ years, and this is definitely true for the people around campus. You'll see far more Muck Fichigan shirts than shirts for any other rival (with BC - Backup College running a distant second).

I wouldn't describe lawsuits

I wouldn't describe lawsuits that went to trial "unsubstantiated."

The question isn't whether she pissed somebody off - anybody who gets to where she is has almost certainly pissed several sombodies off. The question is whether Rutgers has the first clue of how to do an A.D. search properly, especially given the circumstances under which the search was necessary.

Either they didn't know about these issues, or thought they wouldn't be a potential problem that needed to be anticipated. Both of these possibilities reflect an absurd degree of irresponsibility on the part of those who made this hiring decision and have handled the ensuing controversy.

As for Hermann, Rutgers can have her - maybe she'll do a good job, maybe she won't. My concern lies well above the A.D. position. If I'm the B1G (and as an alum of a B1G school), I'm wondering just who the hell I've gotten into bed with.

Dammit

From the Department of Redundancy Department.

Fencing and Men's volleyball My daughter is a fencer, so I've got a bit more interest than many, I'll admit. In part because my daughter is a fencer. Her coach is an assistant at ND, and he's convinced Michigan could be a power in fencing if they made it varsity.
Congrats!

Like everybody else already said. congratulations. That's a hell of an achievement.

This is relatively minor, but I managed to pass my comps exams for my PhD program today. Maybe I had some good MGoMojo.

By the way, my background is education, and my PhD will be education-related. Can you tell me what your field and project are?

Congrats again.

College Football Playoff

Maybe the name of the playoffs is intended to indicate that this is the Platonic ideal of the college footbal playoff. Hence the capital letters.

Because light sabers are far

Because light sabers are far more elegant. If you think blasters are clumsy and random, force lightning is even worse.

Ugh

I believe you are correct. A little bit of nostalgia think ing about CRISP, but, wow, did CRISP suck. Standing in a line that stretched halfway down the basement hall in Angell, waiting to get to sit down in a chair while the person on the computer punched in your classes and told you that these three courses are full, so please try again.

Missed the phone system by two years.

David Harlock

If I remember right, David Harlock wore the C as a sophomore in 1990-91. He was elected a co-captain with Don Stone.

Not trying to diminish Copp's accomplishment, just pimping the older guys who played when I was there.

...No escape from reality.

[Edit]: dammit, beaten

Dammit

DOH!!!

DOH!!!

Reminds me of Milt Wilcox getting the first 26 out against the ChiSox when I was 11. Back then, without umpteen games on every night, getting a chance to watch a perfect game on TV was really rare. Still remember the hit, my brief disappointment, and Wilcox just sort of shrugging with a half-smile on his face, not unlike Darvish's.

I'm sure I'm not the first to point this out...

But to a parent of three, your handle is both hilarious and terrifying at the same time.

I'm at work right now, so

I'm at work right now, so mgoblog is okay.

When the books come out, mgoblog pretty much disappears. Plus, mgoblog never gets my blood pressure, rage, elation, etc. up the way live Michigan sports do. It's the exhaustion of the event that makes it bad for studying.

.

Said "holy s#!t" then turned off the television.

I'm less than two weeks from my PhD comps exams (five fields), and Michigan basketball is too emotionally involving and draining right now. That sequence from the missed free throw to Burke's shot is the only Michigan tourney basketball I've seen live this year.

I better pass these #*($! exams.

Yes

I was at Yost that night, and I still remember people in the press box jumping up and down and making Heisman poses - the place went absolutely bonkers. Those that hadn't seen the people in the press box figured out pretty quick what had happened in New York.

I know who you're talking about

but I'm not Eric. Didn't swim in high school.

From 2007

http://www.miamistudent.net/sports/ice-hockey-on-brink-of-dynasty-1.1151637#.UVeW-5PbPSg

At that time, Miami had won two CCHA season titles, no CCHA tournament titles, and made no frozen fours in five appearances.

Wow

That kid from USC is f'ing fast. Just swam the fast 100 yard relay split ever.

I almost posted a picture of

I almost posted a picture of an alot. You'd think "figgered" would have been a big enough clue.

Yep

Yep

Platform divers are insane.

That is all.

Yes - change the thread title

Cal can get no more than 9 points in the last swimming event, and I don't think they have anybody in the platform diving finals.

More results...

Not that it matters a whole lot for the team title, but in the 200 fly:

Michigan goes 3-8-11

Kid from California ties Michael Phelps American record.

Current score: Michigan 446, California 388.5

400 free relay all that's left for M.

GO BLUE!!!!!

GO BLUE!!!!!
