We are still rebuilding, whether we like the word or not, and we have yet to determine when we will be rebuilt or if we will be rebuilt and whether our current coaching staff can rebuild us,. That is evident from the game, and now we have to see how the rest of the season pans out before we can say these kids are unmotivated and accept defeat so easily.

Thus, Hoke extension talk is way too early which was the main point. We have been mediocre overall since Bo died before 2006 OSU game, let's see how this season plays out. His players are now here on O and D and had some time, we need to see progress both in terms of performance on the field and wins.
|51 weeks 5 days ago||HOKE EXTENSION TALK TOO EARLY.......||
I think we ought to be waiting until the season is over before we talk about extensions for Hoke, the key is improvement from last year both on o-line and offensive running game. Defense to improve but not as much as offense. We are not considered top 25 material this year by many experts, so an 8 or 9 win season would be outperforming last year.
For those who want to replace Hoke, who do we get instead? Not sure I see anyone available that would take this job that would be an instant and obvious improvement. Plus, Hoke goes, and there goes our D coordinator for sure.

Best we can do is hope for progress and health, I doubt we can become a Championship line in 1 year, but servicable with a mobile QB and some weapons on the outside and a screen game, maybe........All we can do is wait and see at this point, lots of work to be done between now and Appalachian State!

|1 year 13 weeks ago||Honestly, Rankings Matter more at end of season,,,,,||
We were ranked fairly high early on this season before our losses to Charlotte and ISU. My reality is that the top for this team is likely to be a 1st division finish in the B1G (top 5?) and a sweet 16 appearance given what we have seen so far this basketball year to date. Anything beyond that would be very surprising to me. However, we have some games coming against MSU, Wisconsin, OSU, and Iowa that will tell us whether we have improved enough to do better than this.

I just don't get this concept of rooting against MSU and OSU except when they play us or if a loss in conference helps us win a division title. Guys, that is the kind of thinking that prevails in places like Columbus and East Lansing where they remain focused on how we do instead of how they do. Like it or not, we are living through the tear down and rebuilding phases of Michigan football since Bo died in 2006. A little humility and grace might be a good thing to acquire, before we get all arrogant again (boy, I hope we get good enough to be arrogant again someday!).
But, if you have to define yourself by rooting against your big rivals, I guess that is your choice but not mine.

People are always trying to read more into what comes out of the Fort than what is said, and have been for any number of years since I can remember being a freshmen in 1976. They confuse non-full disclosure (i.e. They are not going to give us intimate details of all the goings on) with there somehow being a wall of secrecy to be breached. Instead, Hoke is who he is, says what he thinks, does not air his dirty laundry in public, and people try to analyze it like he is one of the old Soviet Union politburo members.
Like you, it is time to accept Hoke at his word, and judge him by both his words and deeds. There is no super secret agenda or special insight to be gained by parsing his every statement. Reality is that the team is 7-5, was very inconsistent over the year on offense and on defense, appears to be short of experienced talent and depth, and hopefully those issues are being addressed and fixed by the current staff. 2014 will be another year to see if the team improves and we have an upward trajectory or if we are doomed to B1G football purgatory for another 2-??? years. All we can do is wait and watch and hope!

Once, back in 1984, while attending a Michigan vs MSU game, our boys and especially our QB at the time starting for his first year (Jim Harbaugh) were not playing very well on offense. So, I casually mentioned to my buddy and roomate at the time, that I wish Harbaugh would get dinged up because he is not playing well and I would like to see if our back-up QB would be better (Chris Zurbrugg). On the very next play, Harbaugh got his arm broke, and we wound up with Bo's worst season going 6-6. Therefore, I am not allowed to criticize or comment or make any statements regarding Michigan QB's during games whether in attendance or watching on tv! There's my superstition after destroying our 1984 season!

They wanted a better bullpen, and better infield defense and to score runs more consistantly. They looked over the Fielder deal and his relationship with the entire team and decided to deal him not only due to the big contract but how he fit with the team. They move Miguel back to 1B where he can stay healthy, they protect him with Victor, they sign an elite closer in Nathan, they deal Fister to create room for Smyly in the rotation, and they create room for Castellanos at either 3B or OF as their best prospect. They already have a good CF (Jackson) and adding Choo makes little sense for them.

Brandon's and the new President's opinions are likely the only ones that matter. We can all claim unacceptable and fire Borges or whatever, I assume another total year end review coming after bowl game this season, important to win and show improvement to keep recruits and establish 2014 confidence. Otherwise, could be rough 2014 !
|1 year 19 weeks ago||Inconsistency the rule for 2013.....||
Both offense and defense were inconsistent all year. How much due to coaching, injuries, youth, talent, et al is open to debate but I think that our initial projections of 8-4 to 9-3 were all based on youth and talent levels and lack of experienced high talent levels on both O and D lines. In the end, the young guys on both the lines were up and down, and we saw D performances like OSU and NW and O performance like OSU and Iowa. Hopefully, next year will be better as the 2012 and 2013 recruiting classes get another year of experience and we bring in another talented class for 2014.
|1 year 20 weeks ago||Same Coaches and Same Kids||
How much of that inconsistency is just the hallmark of any young team learning its way after having been pretty much a mediocre non-B1G contending team since 2006? You guys act as if it is all about effort and coaching, yet it is also all about experience and talent. It takes all four elements in unison. The team played well on offense yesterday, but not on defense and remains short of talent and experience in both areas since 2006. Each game this year saw a lot of variability in performance between the offense and defense (Akron on defense giving up big plays deep, MSU on offense not blocking inside, et al). Rebuilding our talent level to challenge for B1G titles is still an ongoing process, and that talent level peaked in 2006 (and that level was not enough to win the B1G or a BCS bowl game) and really has not returned since.
We remain with a long way to go boys!
|1 year 20 weeks ago||Long Way to Go.....Oh Ye of No Patience||
I'm not happy about where we are in terms of our team's performance since 2007, but we are where we are. Pretty obvious that we are rebuilding, and that it is going to be a longer process than we like. The talent on the roster is young, and therefore is pretty inconsistant. Lots of consternation, coach questioning, player questioning, etc are going to continue as they did in the late Carr years as Tressel and OSU eclipsed us on a regular basis. We had better hope that Hoke and his coaches that he decides to retain or hire/fire are the answer, because if they are not, we are going to suffer greatly for another 4-5 years at a minimum. We have had one good season since 2006, and that was a 2011 11-2 season with this now being abused coaching staff. Hope springs eternal, and if we continue to rebuild the talent base we will get back to where we want to be.

What urgent changes? Issue is offensive line, and it looks like we have tried to play all the ones we got. Nothing can be done at this point, except to keep teaching, keep coaching, keep struggling to try and get better. The whole season has seen this struggle from Akron to UConn to PSU to MSU to Nebraska to NW and now to Iowa. We are what we are, and we are not suddenly going to get competent on the offensive line in game 12. Scream unacceptable and fire all the coaches and call for urgent changes, they all mean nothing.
|1 year 21 weeks ago||His Dudeness, Any names to replace Hoke?||
You say we need a top flight coach, so I respect your opinions as being well thought out and rationally argued. Who do we get?
|1 year 21 weeks ago||Ok, Who can we get now?||
RR is dead and gone, at least for our purposes at Michigan. Whatever the reasons, they no longer matter except in how they might affect our ability to hire any future top flight coaches.
When we fired RR, and hired Hoke, who else was available? Seriously, we were shunned in one sense or another by Schiano and Fitzgerald that we know about, and others (Harbaugh, Miles, ????) that are only rumored.
Who will come here after watching RR's experience? And let's say that Hoke is not the guy, then we get rid of him after year 3 or 4 or 5, now what? Who will come here? We might find ourselves in the same situation we are now, continually changing coaches and watching as we continue our sinking that started in 2007. We have an athletic director who watches film with the football coaches, do you think a hot young coach will want that?
Might we assume that RR learned a few lessons based on his experience at Michigan that he applies successfully at Arizona, and that maybe we did too (willing to pay coordinators and assistants now at least).
So, just saying we need a top flight coach is mom and apple pie, nothing to discuss. The question is, which top flight coach is willing to come here and who is he? You want Hugh Freeze? Who????
Personally, I thought one of the reasons to consider keeping RR was that we could not get a top flight coach to replace him. Appears to be pretty much what happened, at least based on results so far.
|1 year 21 weeks ago||Name the someone to hire...||
You guys all calling to fire the coaching staff owe us who to hire instead. Name people we can reasonably expect to get, not Harbaugh nor Saban nor Miles. You want a hot young coach, we had one called RR and we saw how much time he got and after that would you take this job? So, how about Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss? Or maybe that Arizona coach who is beating number 5 Oregon 28-9 and about to score again at halftime?
|1 year 21 weeks ago||Nothing Changes?||
What would you have them change that they have not already tried? Easy to say nothing changes, but maybe that is because you have who you have on the offensive line and at QB, and at WR too, and all you can do is try to continue to teach them and grow them at this point. We are getting beat up on the offensive line, and no amount of coaching or play calling is going to fix that. Now, he could fire Borges, but that accomplishes nothing at this point, and what plays or offense can be instituted at this point of this season beyond trying to simplify things for the offensive line.
I get being frustrated, and I get saying fix things, but I am saying this year and this offensive line may be beyond fixing and that Akron and UConn and now MSU, Nebraska, and Iowa have shown us that issue in spades.
|1 year 21 weeks ago||Name the great young coaches ready to come here....||
Seems we did not identfy a bunch of them back in 2010 and early 2011.....
|1 year 21 weeks ago||Hoke thinks we don't have a problem????||
Because he has refused to throw his players or his coaches under the bus in public criticism and told us that he is going to fire Borges and Funk unless this team gets better next week? Because he has not shared his intimate thoughts about how stupid Al Borges is because our offense is so bad this year? What specific actions do you want him to take to demonstrate that he thinks we have a problem? Pretty obvious to me that he thinks this is something that is handled between the players and coaches on the team, that they all play for each other, and that he is not going to tell us what is being said inside that locker room regarding the offense and the offensive line.
|1 year 21 weeks ago||Different Situation||
Weiss had no, repeat not one second, head coaching experience and it showed. The over reaction to 2013 is matching the over reaction to 2011. The 2011 meme was that Hoke and Mattison and Borges are Michigan saving Gods, the 2013 meme is that they are all three idiots who should be fired. The guys who knew how to coach in 2011 are now guys who can't spot or develop talent. Obvious that our QB is a broken man from too many hits and too many turnovers and that our offensive line and our running backs are no where near historical Michigan standards. Boys, we are just going to have to wait this out.

Main reason Detroit signed him was due to V. Martinez's injury, so with V. Mart back makes sense that they deal him. The real question is what moves come with this as this seems to me like the first step in a specific plan to make changes for 2014.
|1 year 22 weeks ago||OK with decision, hate play call on 3rd and 4th downs||
I think it was a ballsy decision, supported it at the time, but really wondered why we did not do the play action pass on either 3rd or 4th down there as it seemed to me to be the perfect time to do it with NW likley to sell out against the run for sure......especially given our o-line issues for the game and over the previous two games as well.
|1 year 22 weeks ago||Exactly Right JMBLUE!||
Where we missed him was during the Carr replacement search and the support he would have demanded and the wisdom he would have passed to Carr's successor.....But, that is what it was and those days are gone.
|1 year 22 weeks ago||Who was the right choice?||
Who said he would come here and be the right choice? Schiano turned us down, bluntly Harbaugh in essence turned us down, and Miles turned us down, who? I maintain that we may damn well have gotten the best coach who would come here after the RR debacle, and that no one, and this includes all you guys calling for Hoke's head and whining about things, can name me a better coach WHO WAS WILLING TO COME HERE! WOULD YOU COME HERE AFTER SEEING WHAT HAPPENED TO THE LAST GUY? Greg Schiano did not, and he is the one guy we know turned us down for sure.
Now, if you want to argue that the right path might have been to keep RR, hire him a competent defensive coordinator and a whole new staff as a condition of staying, and have DB watch film with them every Sunday, I think you would be wrong but it is at least a defensable position to take.
|1 year 22 weeks ago||Boys, The Road Back is Long and Treacherous......||
The road back is long, treacherous, and the path will not be consistant nor smooth. We started the current messy era at the end of the 2006 season with Bo's passing and then back to back losses to OSU and USC, and then the horror in 2007, the RR hiring and the 3 years of tire fire of 3-9, 5-7, 7-5 and the determination that was not the path back to where we wanted to be. Now, in 2013, we have Hoke and a staff and a tire fire of an offensive line from the leftovers of the years of unfathomable sadness. If anyone thinks that firing and hiring another new hot shot coach is the answer, just understand that the risk involved (see RR) is high in terms of recruiting and program continuity and the wrong hire experience shows you how it hurts your team for years in terms of talent and its development.
Patience and time is what we need, and whether we like it or not, and whether you decide to show that patience or not, and whether we scream for the heads of various coaches, reality is that we are left to wait and see. We are stuck for good or ill with Hoke and DB, they are going to be here for the next 2-3 years at a minimum. We had better hope they know what they are doing or we are going to be as we have been since 2007 with a few 2011's sprinkled in when we get lucky or experienced or whatever. The leadership team either will or will not figure this out, we can only hope they do.
Realistically, who else would you actually be able to get and come coach here, especially now that DB is (in the view of football and basketball coaches outside our program) micromanaging and inserting himself in deep with the football staff by viewing film and whatnot with them. Part of the issue is that after RR's experience, any intelligent and experienced guy you would want to bring here is likely to be very hesitant to come here, would not you? We must incrementally build our way back, and it ain't being fixed in 1 year or with 1 or 2 players.....
Reality sucks sometimes, but there it is.....
|1 year 22 weeks ago||My issue was the play call on 4th down....||
I think 4th and 2 inside the 10 was a good time to go for it, I just question the play call, if you got the balls to go for it, then call a damn play action pass the one time it ought to work!

That his diagnosis is that the team has been inconsistent on offense, and that includes the QB and O-line. The turnovers, the great plays and boneheaded plays, seems to describe this year's edition pretty well. The offensive showing against Indiana coupled with a fumbled snap at the 2 yard line and an errant pitch that gave them the ball inside the 10 yd line.
We seem to get Good Devin and Bad Devin in each game. If he can reign in the Bad Devin, he can be great, but maybe we are just going to have to live with both for the balance of this year because that is who he is as a 2nd year starter (just now has basically started a full year's worth of games).

We have been playing bend and don't break all year, because Mattison knows damn well he is lacking experienced talent in the secondary and a pass rush with 4 people. He is rightly concerned about putting his corners and secondary in general out on an island by blitzing a lot because he knows they can be beaten one on one by Akron or PSU or Indiana receivers. Indiana was able to expose this weakness at CB and in the secondary and the defesnive line as well with a crop of good receivers and a QB. It was more than just their hurry up, we had people in position to make plays who just did not. Did you guys not see a freshmen QB with an all B1G receiver beat us last week?

Again, RR is water under the bridge, sunk cost, decision that seemed good at the time but turned out to be not so good. The man had a 3-9 season, a 5-6 season, and a 7-5 season and is gone. If Hoke has three such seasons, he will be canned too, and rightfully so.
Your venom for Michigan fans and alumi who thought RR was not the answer after going 15-22 over 3 seasons seems a bit overblown to me. I'd assume any football coach who goes 15-22 over a three year period is going to get fired at Michigan, whether he is a Lloyd Carr or Brady Hoke or Tom Brady guy....
|1 year 26 weeks ago||So, what next?||
Let's just accept your analysis, the question is not what has been done, but what has to happen next to move toward whatever you want to define as non-mediocre. Whining about the last loss or Gary Moeller or Lloyd Carr or Rich Rodriguez or Brady Hoke for that matter is debating water that has already gone under the bridge. In the world of business, it is sunk cost, spent money, gone and it matters not what your analysis says except how that impacts what to do next. Now, the options are:
1) See if this head coach and his assistants can get you to that promised land.
2) Make this head coach fire his assistants and hire ??????????
3) Fire this head coach and his assistants and hire ??????????
Here is what we have seen from your analysis, Michigan has hired 1 name coach since 1969 (Bo was not a name coach when we hired him, trust me, I am old enough to remember that) and that became an unmitigated tire fire for all sorts of reasons that we have not yet recovered from at least based on your analysis. So, if you pick anything other than option 1, that is fine. Who do we hire and why do you think he will do better? Not some theoretical guy, but specifically who? Because if you are the AD at this school that is the real question. You want Les Miles? What makes you think Les Miles wants you? You want John Gruden? What makes you think John Gruden wants you? You wanted Jim Harbaugh, but did he want you? In the real world, you have to pick from what you can get and move on. Pat Fitzgerald was pursued, would have been a great coach for us if you ask me, but he did not want us. We got the best coach for this school that was available and wanted to be here near as I can tell, and he has a fairly experienced staff that he is comfortable with.
Easy to sit on the sidelines and abuse the coaches and the players and recruiting classes and whatever, but the final question remains. WHAT ARE YOU SAYING WE OUGHT TO DO???? And if it is fire any assistant or head coach, who do we replace them with that will come here?
I choose option 1 for now guys, because I do not have any better names that I see available that want to be here. I will let this head coach decide what he wants to do with his offensive and defensive coordinators and see if he can get us there because the alternative is to start over again. Have we not proven the cost of that from Moeller to Carr to Rodriguez to Hoke????
|1 year 27 weeks ago||None of the Above||
The question is where do we go from here. I recall a 1994 loss to Colorado that basically destroyed a season and a coach....A future NFL superbowl star cornerback failed to knock a ball down (Ty Law) and a miracle win and devastating loss occurred. Moeller and the staff and that team never recovered......My question is where does Hoke and Borges and Mattison and Gardner and Lewan and the rest of this team go from here? I do not know, you do not know, we can only wait and see. Adversity either brings us to change and get better or becomes the albatross that sinks us. We will see.......Data so far says that this team does not have the elite talent necessary to challenge for the B1G title based on Akron, UConn, and PSU......At the beginning of this season, we said 9-3 to 8-4, I see nothing yet to have us think that is still not the range of performance for this regular season.
|1 year 27 weeks ago||We want Henri!!!!!!!||
I think it is Otter time around here for sure!
|1 year 27 weeks ago||Before Season 9-3 or 8-4 Consensus||
Now, given data for a 5-1 start, still seems pretty reasonable to say that we expect the above given:
Inability to play well on road
Gardner being our single great offensive talent
Protecting defensive secondary (bend don't break)
The question is whether this team folds after this or comes back and learns from it and both the coaches and the players do better. I don't know which way this goes, and neither do any of you. We can only watch and see. You and I will find out a lot about the coaches on this team based on how they finish this year and how much they know about coaching and motivating and teaching and disciplining and supporting players.

Eeerily similar guys...Had ball down close to field goal range, on a 3rd and 1, got a stupid motion penalty, ran the ball, did not get the 1st down, pooched punted, and then Kordell Stewart happened as Ty Law failed to time him jump and knock the ball down.......That single play killed that team for that year and eventually led to Moeller being fired and LLLLoyd Carr having some good and not so good years. I wonder what the effect this loss has on this team and Hoke???????

The coaches, the players, the QB, the defense, the FG kicker, the o-line, and the defensive secondary all combined to lose this one guys. A total team loss, that Gibbons should have and could have prevented and our o-line inability to block on FG attempts and on running plays continues to show. We still do not have the elite talent level we need to be a team that challenges for the B1G title each and every year. One look at the o-line and d-line should tell you that.
|1 year 27 weeks ago||COACHING STAFF??????||
Did the coaching staff miss the field goals or fail to block on them??? Did the coaching staff throw the two interceptions that put us down 21-10 at halftime? Tells me that they are seeking to reach a balance between rotating and putting their best guys out there and they say that you have to earn your way into the rotation. I think we are a work in process on both offensive and defensive lines this year and we will just have to see how they develop.
|1 year 28 weeks ago||Absolutely we can hang with these two teams....||
Lots of turnovers by both sides with big mistakes by both QB's for interceptions and fumbles, blocked punts, crucial interceptions, and poor tackling by OSU defense. We will not see NW for 4 games yet and we have plenty of opportunity to improve as well. Let's wait and see where we are after the end of October before we all go into run around and panic mode. First things first, let's have another no turnover game with Funchess at wide out and our new interior offensive line and see how they play against PSU.....Stop putting the cart before the horse.
I watched this game in Findlay, OH surrounded mainly by OSU slappys who were screaming to replace Braxton with Guiton in the 2nd qtr and 3rd qtr after the turnovers and interceptions. Whining about their team's inability to tackle, and to cover NW receivers. NW does not throw the late interception and this game could have easily gone their way. I saw an entertaining football game, but no team that looked like they were world beaters to me.

Better blocking, fewer missed assignments, aggressive offensive play calling, and a pass rush. A young team coming together and getting better every game the rest of the way out.
Oh, and playing with heart and passion a swarming defense that smothers Minnesota's run game. We are still a year away from seriously knocking down the wall on a B1G championship......

Let's not confuse the recent history of the B1G in football with the advent of the BTN. There is not a causal link to be found between the two. It is coincidence only, and it will change again.

Great game and that is the most dominant performance I have ever seen by a Michigan team in my memory since 1976! Oh, do I wish I had been there! PSU is a great place to visit to see a game, and if you have never been there, be sure to go sometime and see a game there. The whole atmosphere is stunning, and it is one of the most perfectly beautiful football game stadiums and settings you will ever see.

Sitting in the end zone as Remy Hamilton's kick landed right next to me and my buddy! Just before, as Notre Dame was about to score the go ahead touchdown, the ND guy next to me asked us to move so they could rush the field and celebrate their victory. He was very quiet and red as that kick from Hamilton sailed through the uprights! Finally, a Michigan last second field goal to beat ND!!!!
|1 year 29 weeks ago||Depends on where you sit....||
It is not a business to the fans or alumni, and if this board has taught me anything it is that Michigan football is not a business but a unique tradition to most people. GE and Domino's are businesses, nobody ever went to the University of GE and spent their days rooting for the fighting light bulbs......So Dude, whenever Dave Brandon or some coach treats it like a business I note the masses rise up and condemn them quickly!
|1 year 29 weeks ago||To the fans....||
these are sports, to the coaches, they are jobs, to the players, they are an opportunity. Attempting to call something that generates money a business is a misnomer. The "business" does not create a profit, the money is plowed back into the athletic department or spent on newer equipment or facilities and instead at most schools it runs in the red overall as the big revenue sports fund the rest. Yep, a few coaches make a lot of money, most do not. Yep, a few players scam the system, most do not. Your focus on the few trees causes us to miss the forest. My memory tells me something like 2% or so of college football players make a pro roster. So, stop focusing on Johnny Manziel and think about the other 98%......It is not a business to them, it is a sport they play and enjoy that provides them with an education for their efforts.
|1 year 29 weeks ago||Impossible to Enforce???||
Not really, history shows us that most of the real enforcement for scandals comes from government criminal prosecutions where there is an opportunity to provide witnesses with immunity and compel them to tell the truth about what happened in order not to forfeit that immunity. The Fab 5, PSU and Sandusky, SMU back in the death penalty days, OSU and Tressel, all of these were discovered because of the criminal prosecution in the background. Since the NCAA has no subpoena power, it can only investigate with a wet noodle and ask the member schools to tell the truth. If, however, you were to criminalize the behavior of taking money or pay for play, then you could enforce it as much as any other criminal laws are enforced. And you could criminalize agent behavior or any other behavior you want to stop.
Not saying this is the best way, but the throw your hands up and declare any regulations or rules impossible to enforce is not the truth. We may not have the will to enforce the rules, but there are ways!
|1 year 30 weeks ago||Eliminate Turnovers?||
Sure, great idea. How? Turnovers are a reflection of both physical skill levels and mental skill levels that are possessed by players. People keep talking about making changes, but the real answer might well be that we don't have anything better to change to except to keep teaching and coaching the players and expect that with each snap and each experience they will get better.
|1 year 30 weeks ago||Complacency???||
What do you want the coaches to do? Bite the heads off bats and scream at these kids in front of cameras so you can see it? Maybe you want to see video of them all running the steps at the stadium for 5 hours straight? People who run around and scream stuff is unacceptable and the team is this or that have not a clue. All you know is how the team is performing on the field, period, and you otherwise have theories as to what is going on for which you have no data nor evidence beyond your thoughts. Here is the data and observations I can see based on the performance on the field:
1) Gardner carries the ball very loose when running and scrambling.
2) The offensive line does not do a very good job of keeping Gardner clean in general.
3) Our QB's confidence and his ability to throw those darts he threw against ND is erratic. Might have something to do with being his 9th start, might get better, might not. He tries to do too much sometimes and carry this team. Might have to do with the lack of experienced talent at WR beyond Gallon and the 3 middle o-lineman. Maybe sitting and watching Denard for the past 3 years might have had an impact on this.
4) Our defense actually played fairly decent yesterday, giving up only 7 real points as they did not give up the fumble return for a TD and they did not screw up the punt.
No doubt we could list a bunch more, which would be an exercise that would at least provide some rational basis as to what is going on and what might be done to fix it. I doubt the issue is complacency, rather it is talent and experience and learning how to play your position and depend on others to do their jobs which is most likely in play.

A young man from the middle of nowhere from a poor Florida town comes to a once proud midwestern football power and embodies the spirit, the drive, the focus, the emphasis on the team, and becomes the spiritual embodiment on the field and on the sideline of the entire Michigan tradition and passes it on to those who will come after and achieve more on the football field, but can only build on the foundation he laid after that foundation was cracked and crumbled for 3 years of sheer frustration.
Any of you who do not understand that being a Michigan Man when things are going well is nothing compared to being a Michigan Man during an on-going tire fire need to rethink your position on Denard beyond wins and losses. The return of this team to greatness in the near future and the miracle of 2011 are both built on this man and his spirit and will and his embodiment of what it means to be a Michigan football player.
Now, that is a far more impressive accomplishment to me than winning the Heismann trophy or beating OSU 4 years in a row for any single player.

How about Stribling? A little early to talk about 2014 incoming players (Peppers) after the 3rd game of 2013 I think!
|1 year 31 weeks ago||All we can do....||
Is wait and see what this team 134 does next, and if the coaches make changes in terms of who plays how much and in what positions. We are who we are, we have the players we have, there is more help on the way for 2014 and 2015 (at least, it sure seems that way) and we have 38 scholarship freshmen on the roster who need to get smarter and gain experience and learn how to play college football. You can see the athletic speed and talent, but you can also see the inexperience and the mistakes both by Gardner at QB and elsewhere all over the roster whether it be holding on runs or offsides on a blitz or missing a block or whatever. There is a reason we went 8-5 last year, and it was not just bad luck on a few plays.
|1 year 31 weeks ago||Big Plays and Big Mistakes||
Made lots of big plays and lots of big mistakes.....feast or famine.....that is how young teams play guys, get used to it....one minute running loose and scoring quickly going from down 10-7 to up 21-10 with seeming ease and then tossing a pick 6 and going down 24-21 and then scoring in just a few plays again to go up 28-24........on defense, giving up a long pass and then picking one off in the end zone and then giving up another long pass after losing contain and then making a big 3 yard loss on a 3rd and short near the goal line.......
|1 year 31 weeks ago||Do you think.....||
That might be because we are slowly rebuilding the talent level in A2 one year at a time? Two full classes signed one in 2012 and one in 2013. Young, athletic talent, not experienced. You can not replace experience and you can't magically teach it all you can do is wait for it to occur. This is where we are since the start of the 2007 season, and why we have not seriously challenged for the B1G title since 2006. This team went 8-5 last year, and they are not suddenly going to 13-0. This is going to be a slow and painful process with some gains and some brilliant plays and some oh my God moments like pick 6's and getting beat deep by wide outs and safety derps and what not. Inconsistancy is the hall mark of young teams. Grow up, understand where you are in the process, and be realistic. 9-3 seems about right. We are at least 1-2 years away from having the talent level that people like you associate with the brand name of Michigan football.

The question, which none of you know the answer to, is what does this team do as a team after this game and did they learn anything? Bad Devin nearly killed us, but great Devin saved our bacon just barely. Fans running around in panic and yelling unacceptable is just foolishness. The current staff has 1, count them geniuses, 1 full recruiting class. Here is your hint, young talent is inconsistent, gets too up and too down on itself, and must play and learn. Today was a complete learning experience. Now, based on what they do the rest of the year, we will know whether they learned or not.

Your stated assumption is that any school that gets recruits that is not a national power for the past 30 years must be cheating. Yet, we have many examples of schools rising and falling based on their coaching staffs from Michigan hiring RR to Alabama hiring Mike Shula and then Nick Saban. Coaches, their staffs, and their ability to recruit and develop talent matter a lot even if you are a Michigan or an Alabama or Texas or Nebraska or XXXXXX!

the point, oh ye of obvious obtuse thought and inability to see what is painfully obvious to the rest of the intelligent world, is that the matter is moot, there is no smoking gun of evidence to be found to take away the already handed out verdict nor to do anything to exonerate Joe Pa who has no defense as all you could possibly say is that he either knew what was going on and did little to nothing, in which case he is a lying sack of crap, or he did not know and should have known, in which case he was a proverbial idiot of the first degree, and you and all those who want to continue to debate the issue somehow thinking that the standard of proof for deciding that Mr. Paterno is guilty is the same as that for a criminal trial are full of the proverbial wit and wisdom normally attributed to those who flunk out at MSU.....
His statue is gone, his legacy tarnished, and the evidence is fairly convincing that he knew what was going on but put damage control short term over doing what was right when his own personally promoted image was otherwise. come from experience, and we have to get it through our heads that our freshmen from McGary to Stauskas to GRob3 to Van Wert are going to have to learn how to play college ball and are going to experience growing pains. You lose two games by two three pointers that go in for them and not for you, one on a definite miracle 1 in 50 or more shot, and all the analysts come out and question their coaching, their work ethic, their mental attitude.....Get real, the top 5 teams all went 0 for whatever on the road this week....Home court refereeing advantage is huge....Beilein had it right in his post game comments, question is what did we learn as a team and as individual players from the last two games. Either we get better and learn, or we keep pounding our heads into the wall and suffer more losses.
|2 years 9 weeks ago||Panic.....||
You guys are way too worried about one kid making a single decision on where he wants to go to college and play football. OSU will get their players, and we will get ours and sometimes they will get people we want and sometimes we will get people they want. Get over it....We expect that OSU and UM will continue to both get top 10 classes most of the time, and thinking that Meyer or Hoke will likely move that needle much from what it has historically been long term is sheer foolishness. Some kids will prefer one to the other, or one school to the other, and that will not change. Real question is likely more one of individual talent evaluation by both staffs, and the ability to find players who can be and will be coached up and developed. I trust Mattison and Borges and the entire Michigan staff more than I trust the entire OSU staff to be able to do that based on what I have seen from this staff so far, so should all of you.

Hell, they play with great intensity and maturity given their actual age and experience, and they found a way to win against a much bigger and more experienced OSU team that had beaten them 8 out of their last 9 meetings...You guys would date Mila Kunis and whine that she does not cook well enough for you!

Just accusations of a coach who was one of his rivals and has seen him go on to have success. Either provide proof of something he has done, or stop the attempt at innuendo. What do you expect a football coach at a place where there is no tradition since the late 1960's to do, except to sell and sell hard the assets he sees and what he can do in the future?

People in this country have many opportunities and are free to choose their lifestyles and professions and work and play. The data needs to be presented, the facts laid out in front of everyone, and then parents and young adults are free to choose whether to play football or soccer (collisions with no protection whatsoever) or ride a motorcycle or whatever. They pay the price of their decisions and suffer both the consequences and reap the benefits.
We need to allow them to choose what they wish to do, and then accept their choices as their individual weighing of the pluses and minuses for them. That goes for whether they want to play professional football or college football or high school football or like Taylor Lewan, to stay in college for another year, or like Darius Morris, to leave for pro basketball "early", or Barry Sanders to retire "early". Everyone needs to stop telling others how to make their own individual value judgements on such things, especially in sports.

Typical kind of comment from a certain type of fan who just does not get it. It will require a few years of recruiting at a top 10 level to have the kind of talent and depth required to challenge for the B1G title and a top 4 playoff berth. It is obvious you have never led an organization or a team or a group to succes nor have you ever built a team either on a sports or business field.
The results are what they are, injuries exposed the lack of experienced talent and depth was apparent on the field all year long. Pride is not the issue, effort is not the issue, the rebuilding of Michigan as a football power is under way, construction may take a another year or two. Get over it.
|2 years 15 weeks ago||Point is....||
Talent and help are coming with this and future recruiting classes. The loss of Countess early and Fitgerald for the bowl game exposed our lack of talent and depth in the secondary quite clearly. I predict good things coming in 2013 and 2014 with Gardner developing and with additional talent on offense and defense.
|2 years 15 weeks ago||Denard.....||
In the dark ages of Michigan football, Denard, you arose to provide us with hope and a future vision. You showed us that we would not quit, that we would struggle with everything we had, and we would never give up. For that, and for playing your heart and rear end off for the past 4 years, we thank you! You are what we hope and pray for every single Michigan student to be both today and in the future, someone who works hard and always does their best with a smile!
Hope to see your smiling face on Sundays next fall! You will be missed!

11 Warriors smug uppiness about how they would never talk about whether a football coach is a Buckeye man or never fully support a coach is sure to come back and haunt them sooner or later. I live in Ohio, and I heard for years all the comments about Cooper's lack of knowing what it meant to be a Buckeye and how he never understood the UM vs OSU rivalry as he went 2-10-01 over his time period there. When Tressel was hired, all I heard about was how he understood the rivalry and was an Ohio man and blah, blah, blah.........Now, after going 12-0 following their 6-7 tire fire season, they know everything.....Payback is coming in 2013 boys, when we beat the dastardly Buckeyes twice, once in A2 and once in Indianapolis!
|2 years 20 weeks ago||Mayans......||
Looks to me that the Mayans are going to win as their calendar correctly predicted the end of the world in 2012 before any championship football game could be played!
By the way, if you are going to phrase this "Who are wanting to win ncg?", guess you must favor Alabama, since this is how about 99% of their fans would say it.......
|2 years 20 weeks ago||Mike Lantry????||
This your subtle way of saying we will not be kicking field goals but instead going on all 4th downs????
No abuse for the kid, but how about somebody that made field goals, like Ali Haji Sheikh at least.....
|2 years 21 weeks ago||Captain Hindsight.....||
You want to blame someone, blame Tate Forcier for being a really big idiot and getting kicked off the team and out of school. Had he stayed around and eligible, we would have had that QB tandem we needed this year and last.
|2 years 21 weeks ago||Stop Whining...||
and get real. Most intelligent observers had us picked for a 9-3 to 8-4 regular season given away games with Alabama, ND, Nebraska and OSU. We had at best a mediocre offensive line all year, and we lacked talent, size, and speed at WR. Lost Countess early, lost Denard late, and Gardner showed you in NW and OSU game why he was not the best QB and why he was moved to WR to start the year when he played decent defenses. Gardner will be better next year, we likely will have some more targets for him at WR with some size and speed, and we have a lot of talent coming in that will play and provide better depth. We are at least 1-2 good to great recruiting classes from where we need to be to challenge for the B1G title each year and occassionally challenge for the national championship play-off. Our defense is still short of playmakers and size and speed, but that is coming too. How about a tad bit of patience given that we just now graduate a group of guys who had pretty lousy (by Michigan standards for sure) 2009-2010 years where we lost to anyone who had a decent defense as well?
|2 years 21 weeks ago||Get a Concealed Weapons Permit!||
Always handy anytime you visit Columbus, and never wear any Michigan stuff into a restaurant, you can rest assured those OSU graduates working there will food poison you out of jealousy!
|2 years 21 weeks ago||Question for you?||
Ever meet Bo in person? People have this concept that he was somehow this old crotchy grouch, but that was far from the case. He had a tremendous sense of humor, a sparkling warm and fun side, could cut through more crap and pomp faster than anyone I ever met. I was a summer building director for 2 years and met him in his office before the high school football camps back in 1980 and 1981. I guarantee you Bo could and would easily do that (minus the expletive deletives) and I've seen him do that on a number of occassions. Ever see his sideline antics on the holding call again us on a faked punt in his last Rose Bowl game????
|2 years 22 weeks ago||COMPARED TO?????||
Mom and apple pie generic statements like this mean nothing. Comparison to whom is the question? Compared to SEC, yes, OSU has fine academics, compared to Northwestern, Michigan, Duke, Stanford, Cal-Berkley? Not so much......
|2 years 22 weeks ago||Channeling Bo?||
6 years exactly after Bo passes away, I think he takes over Les Miles body for a quick performance to remind us all that it is, after all, beat Ohio week!
|2 years 22 weeks ago||Relax, I am in charge and I am not done yet.....||
|2 years 22 weeks ago||Maybe Garnder....||
Plays a lot better at QB than he practices, and thus this kind of offense we have seen today was not looking practical. With Toussaint injured and out, and Denard looking to be unable to throw, this plan makes sense.
Note the interception Devin just tossed, we'll never know what would have happened had Devin stayed at QB, water under the bridge, and I wonder how long Denard's arm was not 100% earlier this year before Nebraska.
Meanwhile, a guy named Jim Bob Tressel on our board tries to create a QB controversy the week before we play the two of the three greatest evils in college football, Ohio and Urban Meyers (Nick Saban is 3rd). Why should anyone be surprised?
Given your attitude, enjoy your trip, your plane is boarding for:
|2 years 22 weeks ago||First, we got right Coach....||
Hope we are seeing a pattern develop here that will continue for basketball and will be developing in football.
Get the right coach, he shows he can coach up current talent and have them perform well. Then, seeing we now have a coach and coaching staff that knows what to do and how to do it, we get a great recruiting class and start re-establishing ourselves as one of the elite teams on an annual basis......
I like it!

I have lived in Michigan, Ohio, and Mississippi. I attended public schools in all 3 states, and northeast Ohio was the most racist area I lived in. When I lived in Mississippi, I attended a racial integrated middle school. When I lived in Michigan and Ohio, I attended public schools that had almost no minorities in terms of blacks or hispanics or Jews or asians or whatever.
You are living in the far past if you think that Mississippi is the most racial backward state. I suggest you try and learn something before voicing your own prejudices in a public forum.
|2 years 23 weeks ago||HATE THE SOUTH?||
Now that is surely a statement of a well reasoned and intelligent and tolerant person who loves humankind!
|2 years 23 weeks ago||Ignorance....||
Is not confined to Mississippi or Ole Miss or red states as confirmed by various comments outlined here. Let us not confuse what happened in the 1950's and 1960's with how life is today in the south in the second decade of the 21st century, unless you have actual first hand knowledge. As someone with that first hand knowledge, it is obvious that most of you do not possess it.
Ole Miss is a very beautiful campus and a growing school with a ton of very pretty young women and ambitious and intelligent young men of all races. If you had ever visited the campus, gone to a football game, spent a little time in the grove, discussed Chuckie Mullins with an alumnus, or attended the Texas-Ole Miss football game where they cheered James Meredith at half-time, you might have a clue as to how things are these days as opposed to those days. I suggest you check out the ESPN 30-30 film on Ghosts of Mississippi to educate yourselves a bit more.
It is a place that some young men find to be a good fit for their academic and athletic careers, and we should leave it to them to decide for themselves.

He does not get a ruling until after his senior year, at least that is what we have been told.
|2 years 24 weeks ago||Schedule Difficulty...||
Models are made so we can review some data and have an intelligent discussion. If you want to know everything and take everything into account including scheduling strength differences you can go see that kind of analysis with the numbers from USA Today and Sagarin.....
|2 years 24 weeks ago||Thanks for the work and More data||
Nice work, a definite upvote. While looking at the data, I wondered about the effect both defensive turnovers created and turnover margin might have on the yardage stats as another way to say that good defenses force turnovers and how that might relate to the differences in terms of overall yardage pct. vs scoring diff pct.
I added the data here, I think this more likely explains what you refer to as ND living on borrowed time......
|2 years 24 weeks ago||Real Question.....||
Do we want to establish ourselves as a school that keeps its commitments to our student athletes once made or not? Because, if we take the path you are recommending, then we will eventually be in a position where we will have to toss a kid who has committed for a kid who waited until the last minute or whatever.
Not saying you are right or wrong, but let's be sure we understand who we are and what we have to offer and how we are going to conduct business. That appears to me to be the essence of what I would expect as the Michigan way.....
|2 years 24 weeks ago||QB Coach.....||
I see Mr. Loeffler, our previous QB coach from 2002-2007, might soon be available as he is currently at Auburn.......anyone else we care to list that ought to be considered????

|2 years 29 weeks ago||OSU 2011 Defensive Stats vs ND Year to Date||
2012 ND: Points per game: 9 national rank: 4th
Rushing Defense yards: 112.5 national rank: 28th
Total Defense yards: 291.25 national rank: 16th
2011 OSU: Points per game: 21 national rank: 27th
Rushing Defense yards: 141.5 national rank: 50th
Total defense yards: 323.54 national rank 19th
Now, my conclusion (we would need to revisit at end of year) would be that OSU had a fairly porous rushing defense and thus we only threw 17 times against them while ND appears to have a fairly stout rushing defense in comparison.
Thus, I think attempting to compare the 2011 OSU game played at UM stadium to the 2012 ND game played at ND and thinking the two bear a lot of resemblenece to each other in terms of the opponents strengths and weaknesses and our own strengths and weaknesses with what we could or could not do is fruitless.
At ND, What we did in the first half did not work, what we did in the second half worked to some extent, but not enough. We changed our plan of attack in response to data we got on Denard's three quick ints.
Now, I may not be right, but there is some data involved that at least makes a case for why comparing 2011 OSU and 2012 ND might not make a lot of sense.

Have MSU as a 7 to 10 point home favorite with an over/under at 45........They must be thinking it will be MSU running the ball and controlling the clock with their ground game and defense. At this time of the year, before anyone has played anyone else, they are usually your best prognosticators.

|2 years 38 weeks ago||Responsibility....||
Presidents at Universities, like CEO's at companies, are paid to be responsible. Only two choices, either Spanier knew something was going on, in which case he should be fired and abused for obvious reasons, or he did not know what was going on, in which case he is guilty of incompetence because it is his JOB to know what is going on at the University and to find out and root out this type of behavior amongst his employees that work for him.
Might not be his fault, if he knew nothing, but it sure is his responsibility. That is what he is and was paid for....
Same for JoePa, as head football coach, he is responsible to know his staff and know that Sandusky was a repeat offending pedophile and to build a culture and climate where those in his staff and organization would know to come out and tell him the truth and put an end to such things.
|2 years 38 weeks ago||Lack Of Instituitional Control?||
Was it not the total power and ability to control the entire situation from both the PSU football head coach and the various other university and law enforcement officials and athletic heads that led to the cowardice of this cover-up?
The message to be sent is to all future administrators and coaches that if you think it is bad to blow the whistle on yourself in cases like this, and worry about your reputation if you disclose what is going on, it is even worse when we find out you covered it up and attempted to sweep it under the rug! The punishment is not about the water under the bridge, it is about making sure it does not happen again anywhere in college sports.
|2 years 42 weeks ago||Schedule or Number of Upperclassmen?||
The really interesting questions owuld be to check and see both the schedule rankings at the end of the year for each of the Mattison coached teams (maybe use Sagarins final rating of the schedule) and the number of seniors departing at the end of each of those years.
That would cover both the relative strength of the opposition and the relative experience of the team.
