Equilibrium is not enough

One of the good things about the light consequences on OSU is that they will naturally not be as vigilant in preventing this from happening again.

We all know that in order for the punishment to be a proper deterrent, the punishment has to be more severe than the crime.  If they are only equal then the school/person will commit the crime and come out ahead because they won't get caught every time.  The sanctions that OSU received were just about on par with the crime (although losing JT was pretty big for us).   I would not be surprised at all if some OSU alumni overreached in an attempt to get back to the NCG in two years and tried to give some benefits to recruits/players.  They may not get caught, but the natural consequence of making a punishment too light is that there will be more of those types of infractions.

What is "cheating?"

Not to get too PHIL 001 but I really hate that we (including myself) have all bought into the NCAA definitions of corrupt and right and wrong.  Put it this way, if Michigan had a rich alumni who was willing to pay whatever it took for players and it wasn't against the NCAA rules - then I would have absolutely no problem with giving cars, tatoos, boats or whatever to these kids if it meant winning (as long as there were no reprecussions on the kids for losing).  In that case, losing with "honor" would just be stupid/meaningless and would only mean that we didn't have the financial resources to win ... so we would instead be playing the bulls*** moral self righteousness card.  But since the NCAA says paying players = against the rules ... we now view paying players = corrupt.  So I guess in response to the OP I would say that if we could cheat and be a powerhouse and never get caught then I would be fine with it ... because the rules are stupid.  Rules don't (or shouldn't) make an action right or wrong.  We should make rules against things that are wrong.  Big difference.

Not so much

After the first half I was thinking that we might have a decent chance if we played LSU.  Mattison could shut them down and Denard is liable to go off on anyone.  After this second ... ehhhh not so much.

Actually ...

Are the bowls required to select a non-AQ team?  Is TCU guaranteed a spot?

Luck or Denard

If Georgia wins, it seems like it will come down to us or Stanford.  Michigan will travel better, but Stanford would pull in a better TV audience with all of the (insane) hype for Luck.

Face Palm

Lots of face palms in Houston

Or not ..

Just saw that several others have posted that Schlabach is wrong about finishing in the Top 18.  Guess we do have some rooting to do.  How could he f*** that up this badly?  There is no way for him to equivocate what he wrote?  Is he just flat out wrong or is there some way that he could be "mistaken?"

Only MSU or Wisconsin needs to lose

According to this ESPN article

http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation/post/_/id/54347/oklahoma-state-making-strides

In order to be eligible to be selected as at At-Large team for a BCS bowl, a team needs to either finish in the Top 14.  However, if only one team from that conference finished in the Top 14 then a team only has to finish in the Top 18.  Since the loser of the Sparty Wisonsin game will almost certainly fall out of the Top 14 (unless perhaps it is a very very close game) then we will be eligible to be selected ... Thus advancing to the Sugar Bowl.  The point is, we don't even need to root for Sparty (Thank God).  With the standings exactly as they are, we have already qualified ... even if Baylor jumps us.

Fickell is no Gipper

Imagine (not that it will happen) that Ohio wins The Game ... does anyone think that the Ohio players would react in any really supportive way of Fickell?  I don't think he would get the Gatordae bath (at least not with any real exuberance) and he definitely wouldn't get carried off the field like Carr.  The point is, Fickell doesn't seem to have built the kind of relationship where his players would repsond to this kind of news by wanting to win one for the Gipper or stick it to the Trustees.  Some of the seniors may have bonded with him, but none of the really important players.  Posey doesn't give a s*** about anyone other than himself and Braxtons interactions with him on the sidelines don't seem particularly friendly.

Experience doesn't always make you a good coach ...

GERG

That being said , Herbie would not be a good coach ... unless he brings Erin Andrews along as a recruiting coordinator

Meyer had great timing ...

Meyer benefitted from great timing recruiting-wise while he was at Florida.  Not to take that much away from (okay maybe to take a lot away from him), but Miami and Florida State were pretty much awful while he was at UF.  He obviously pulled in great recruits, but he got lucky with Tebow.  The rest of the SEC was pretty down at that time as well.  Now with Alabama and Auburn firmly on top or on the rise, it is much more difficult to pull in the top SEC recruits every year.  Just look at his last year at Florida and this year.  Brantley is terrible and their defense is full of holes.

Up here, he's about to come into an easy situation as well.  One year into the growing pain process.  Penn State is about to go into free fall.  Wisconsin has a new qb next year.  He is either very lucky or he knows how to pick his situations.

I find it interesting that he wouldn't take on Notre Dame, a school where it is more difficult to recruit, and where if he succeeded his legend would be much higher.  Meyer seems to be going for the easier route.

Forcier to Arizona ...

Obviously it won't happen, but it would be nice to be able to cheer for both of them at the same time.  So many good memories (awful ones too) ... but that ND game will be with me forever.

No Mike Martin? WTF

Only a single passing mention of Mike Martin?  Did he even watch the NEB game?  Martin will eat Brewster alive. There is twice as much space talking up Countess.  Not taking anything away from Countess ... he will be an all conference player in a year or two.  Mike Martin is a monster right now.
