Found the Ray interview (linked in the post too, but here just for convenience) interesting:
That's the portion of the interview that stood out to me, which is the last part of the last paragraph for those searching. While not certain, this type of thinking suggests to me that they're more open to what they're looking for. Most of what Ray said was about having a balanced team, but more importantly, having a coach in place that can oversee everything. Having the structure in place to have an overall cohesive unit, instead of one or the other. I haven't listened to the interview so I want to see if he delved into more of the specifics of spread versus traditional pro-style, but acknowledging and highlighting effectiveness of coaching rather than scheme seems like it would be an important development.

Question: Why does the title of this thread say Top 5 when the article says the "highest-paid coach" in the NHL? Details, but details.
Digression: Who are the Top 5 coaches in the NHL anyway? I can get to four easily with Babcock, Julien, Quenneville, and Sutter. I'm going blank on number 5 at the moment.
Thoughts: Obviously, it's a great for the Red Wings. The whole "Babcock-to-Michigan" thing always seemed outlandish, though it would have been awesome if it had/did happen. Babcock is one of the best coaches in the NHL, if not the best. Though it may not be the way he would run things (may be it would be?), he has proven that he can work with the Wings way of developing young talent.

I've run the Harbaughbilities and we're Harbaughbly getting Harbaugh.
|1 week 5 days ago||Agreed||
Yeah, I was on the "he might not be that bad a hire" path until my friend sent me that information. It brought that thought to a screeching halt. This is why he shouldn't be our coach. Whether that starts from the AD or permeates his coaching staff, this is not something we want at Michigan (or anywhere).
To add, this is my primary reason against Pinkel. I have less of a problem with the DUI and extra-marital stuff, although ideally you want a squeeky clean guy.

I would have really liked Muschamp to be a DC option if Harbaugh came to Michigan. Of course, I'm banking on Les bringing Chavis if he is the next HC.

Not sure if you're staying in Harvard, but anyway, if you're trying to get to McGreevy's take the 1 bus from Harvard (it goes around the yard) and get off at Hynes. If you're going to Tavern, take the Redline towards Alewife for a stop to Porter. Harvard to Porter is walkable too.

While I agree with most of what you said, the game and Game day will in Allston across the river. I would imagine everything else will still be bad though. I think I took the T back from Boston to Harvard last time it was at the Stadium. I don't remember it being terrible, but it wasn't good either.
|3 weeks 6 days ago||We know this team can shoot||
We know this team can shoot from the outside. I think these games are an opportunity to get the confidence to drive and make plays closer to the rim. Guys like Irvin and Chatman will make the offense that much more lethal and multiple if they can get inside in addition to Walton and Levert. What I'm saying is that I'm not frustrated by them taking those outside jumpers and sort of stalling out in the second half of games against teams we know they can beat so much as getting frustrated that they're passing up the opportunity to work on something that will help them later in the season.
Defensively or at least on the glass, I want to see more of the boxing out. This could be the biggest development for the team because I think that it's been a weakness in the last couple of seasons. I want to see the bigs get their butts in on a man and I want to see the guards clean house. I hope Michigan can come out with the same defensive intensity they came out against Bucknell.

I'm surprised by how much shade has been thrown Rex's way, though I do think we're all a bit testy about this coaching search, myself included.
Let me start by saying that I don't think Rex should be the head coach at Michigan.
However, if you asked me if he would be a bad coach, I'd say no. He'd certainly be better than Hoke. Many of you have said that Rex has an average defense and a bad offense. That is simply not true. In fact, his defense has been consistently in the top third of the league and in some years, he's had top 5 defenses (YPG). The guy is a blowhard, but he can coach a defense. He has an eye for talent too. I think he can thrive at the college level in the right situation.
Now, there are two sides to my perspective. I'm a Patriots fan so I've had the pleasure of laughing at his teams. But at the same time, being a fan of a rival, I can say that I have respect for how he coaches up his teams. Again, I don't think he's right for Michigan and I think that the average defense/terrible offense and Hoke comparisons are completely off base. He at least has good defenses.
My qualms are with the coordinators he's brought in, especially offensively. It seemed like they tried ridiculously hard to make Sanchez fit. They ousted Schottenheimer, who has done pretty well in STL this year. Did you not give your OC the best chance to get the most out of that offense? Also, the Jets have issues beyond the coaching as that front office is incredibly dysfunctional. Would Rex do better in a situation where he'd have complete control over what's going on?
Do I think Rex could succeed at the college level? Yes. Are there a lot of questions and uncertainty, moreso than a proven college coach? Absolutely. Should Rex be the next coach at Michigan? No.
I can't believe I'm defending someone associated with the Jets.
|7 weeks 6 days ago||I don't think the OP is||
I don't think the OP is asking whether Sumlin should get the top i.e. be the top candidate, but more so whether he should still be considered. Obviously, Dak was a nobody turned superstar. It would seem that Mullen would be far preferred to Sumlin, by pretty much everyone. I do think Sumlin has to be considered though as beyond the Harbaughs and Mullen, he is far from the worst option.
|7 weeks 6 days ago||I like Kevin Sumlin. It||
I like Kevin Sumlin. It would've been a progressive hire in 2011, but I'm not sure for now. He's an energetic dude that will recruit well and he will put guys in the pros. I do agree with most that defense is a question, but I expect whoever the new AD is will vet and make sure that we get a HC who will take care of the whole program, not just the offense and getting players into the pros. I would be happy with Sumlin and a great DC. However, his current DC makes like 500k and we've seen how aTm has done this year...
There are definitely questions, but I wouldn't come close to ruling him out.

You've sold me...or made me less apprehensive about Todd Graham now. Wow. I hadn't thought about the coordinators he's found or attracted.

Yup, I floated this to one of my friends and he freaked out the same way the guy you responded to did. He's a hell of a coach. He's a good evaluator of talent and man, can he coach a defense. The big thing is offensive. Um. Rex + Stitt Happens? That might be amazing.

1. I'm not sure what the Michigan section is as I didn't get my tickets through UMCGB. I will be in section 102. The UMCGB bars in Boston are McGreevy's on Boylston Street and Tavern in the Square in Porter Square in Cambridge. Neither of these are particularly good to go to before this game, unless you want to leave the watch early or arrive to the game late. McGreevy's is on the Green Line which will take you right up to Agganis. Take the B (there are four branches of the Green Line) and stop at the Pleasant Street stop. That's if you want to watch the football game at the alumni bars.
2. Sunset Tap and Grill is probably the best bar in the area. It's a ten or so minute walk. There are plenty of other bars around too, but they'll vary in quality.
3. Agganis is pretty nice. It's pretty cushy. It seems to have been designed less for hockey than for other events like concerts and shows. When I was a kid, I went to Walter Brown, their old arena and that was a little band box similar to, but smaller than Yost. The new rink is way too big for every game besides BC. You'll notice that when you're there because there'll be some empty seats and it will be quieter.
Environment-wise, I think it's been better this year. I've already gone to two games, both of which were exhibitions, and I think that there is a lot more excitement and energy, especially from the student section. I'd call this the Eichel effect. The kid is really really really good.
4. They sell beer at Agganis.

My roommate is from Madison and his dad is a Wisconsin undergrad/law school alum. From what I've been told, I can totally understand why Wisconsin fans hated him despite the success that he had. Bielema, despite being a good coach, seems to be a genuinely terrible person to be around. So that it doesn't sound like I'm completely making accusations/withholding information, a car service in Madison refused to let him ride in their cars. They'd take his wife, who doesn't sound much better, but not him.
