OKC may have some of the worst offensive "sets" I've seen. I really do wonder if Westbrook and Durant even have a plan out there sometimes.

Great comeback. A bit disappointed to see some of the bitching in the other thread, but then again it's message boards about UM sports, so I shouldn't be surprised.
Anyway, on to the series. Still lots of work to be done, but UF being eliminated really opens up the field.

Briles is a head coach of the Baylor football team. He heard a number of his players were suspected of sexual assaults, and (at best) did nothing. Sure, he isn't probably going to go to jail over it (though I have no idea about obstruction laws in Texas or the duty to report as a member of an academic institution), but the act like he's absolved of responsibility because it wasn't in his exact job description is an extremely rigid view of what a football coach is supposed to do.

It's very impressive. Of course, let's see how many stick around when Meyer rushes off to spend time with his family after losing 3 games this year.
|4 days 15 hours ago||This could be one of those||
This could be one of those "lack of institutional control" situations where he gets hit with a show-cause restriction on employment. Given his age and the charges, that's a career-ender as a high-level coach. Maybe someone brings him on as an assistant or advisor, but I'm thinking this might be the end for Briles.
|4 days 15 hours ago||I mean, the punishment for||
I mean, the punishment for Briles is that he probably won't be a candidate for another high-profile coaching position given his age and (if true) the degree of institutional impropriety that's gone on. But yeah, he'll make millions off of it.

I mean, he needed to go, but that's crazy. I hope Baylor fans enjoyed national relevance, as I'm not sure that the replacement for Briles will be quite as innovative.

Mizzou looks tough, but they are still a team a step below UM in at least two phases. It will really be interesting to see how they look in that first game. If the Tigers can maintain momentum from last week, they'll be tough. But if UM starts out strong, this could be over quickly.
|5 days 13 hours ago||Maybe it's personal||
Maybe it's personal experience, but I've not had problems with reasonable counter-offers based on existing offers. If the first company is offended that you are saying company B is willing to pay you 5% more, then so be it, but they shouldn't be offended. The job market defines labor based on how much someone is willing to spend for it, and so the market rate is what those offers come to. If someone is outside that band that's their fault, but it might also mean the first company is underestimating the current job market.

Losing as GSW may would be more jarring because it would be over a 7-game series. That Patriots SB loss was a crazy couple of plays plus the Giants playing inspired, dominant defense. But the Patriots had beaten them only a couple weeks earlier, and when you are playing single-elimination sports an "upset" is less surprising. But the Warriors were demonstrably better than OKC all season, and yet are losing these games by double-digits, with the final score sometimes even downplaying the dominance by the Thunder.

Yeah, but I wonder if part of the success stems from turning a blind eye to some things. I'm not sure how easy it is to recruit to Baylor, and perhaps that's why you are seeing a slew of problems there. Have no idea, but this isn't a good look for them.
|6 days 14 hours ago||I mean, if UM doesn't have a||
I mean, if UM doesn't have a competent backup to fill in for him (jury still out, I guess, on guys like Isaac and Johnson), losing him would be tough. But yeah, this feels like a stretch. I'd say Lewis is important, and depending on how the defense shakes out losing a guy like Thomas, Hill, or even Gedeon could be disasterous because the backups are either unproven or non-existent.
|6 days 15 hours ago||And yet, this will get less||
And yet, this will get less national play than Harbaugh trying to hold some summer camps in the South.
This is a terrible situation at Baylor, and so at least Baylor is doing something. That said, Art Briles has presided over a number of pretty serious situations, and sure he's made them nationally relevant, but these movies never end with Briles holding a title above his head and everything resolving on the up for the good guys. If I'm Baylor and it becomes pretty clear that Briles at least knew some of the sexual abuses were going on/the coverup was going on, you almost have to move on.

It's funny, thoght; TCU has been a consistent winner mostly because they signed a good coach and seem to have found a style that works for them. Obviously they'll need to continue that trend when Patterson leaves, but I don't hear anything particularly bad about TCU.
I think what surprises people is when historically bad programs with little else to sell for themselves become really good AND are terrible at hiding indiscretions blow up, it's usually because of stuff like this. I'm not saying sexual assault cover-ups happen everywhere, but the good programs have a way of self-policing so that a 1-day story doesn't become a 1-month one. Some of that comes through recruiting a particular type of athlete and making sure that you really do monitor and watch their actions (unlike, it seems, Briles did), but it also means you have an infrastructure in place to handle problems quickly and efficiently. I think Oregon is shady as all get-out with the Phil Knight connection, but they seem to be able to handle problems reasonably quietly. MSU, for all their warts, seem to be good at it as well.

I thought Thomas was trending toward UM for a bit now.
Pulling him to UM would be huge for next season, plus it continues to defrost/change the issues that exist between King and UM.

His game has always been really interesting, and I liked watching him at MSU. But he's always been just obnoxious it seems as a person. Then getting drafted in the second round added to it.

I mean, the fact he went to MSU and is an ass who went full heel adds a little to it, but it's still a major story coming out of one of the more compelling basketball series in years.

I'd like to think if this was the second time in two games a former UM player kicked a guy in the groin and generally acted like an add on a basketball court, people would be critical.

Adams seems to be deeply inside Green's head this series, as he can body him up without help defense and disrupt his shot. Green has kicked him twice now and has been jawing all along. I assume he'll be suspended a game, and I think we might be seeing a bit of the shine come off Green in terms of national love. The line between a fun, trash talking winner and an obnoxious sore loser is pretty thin.

Yeah, Rutgers is going to get run off the field a lot this year. Not sure how this will all look to the fans when they are throttled by Iowa, OSU, and UM in successive weeks.
|1 week 3 days ago||Yeah. That's not a schedule||
Yeah. That's not a schedule designed to coast to 10+ wins. They'd have to pull at least one upset plus not lose to a single team at/below their level, which show me a UT team that has done that since Fulmer.

Tennessee at 10 is crazy; that's putting a lot of hope on a Butch Jones team handling expectations.
UM at 9.5 makes sense; 9-10 wins seems about right given the schedule.
|1 week 3 days ago||I have both a boy and a girl, and I'm not crazy||
I have both a boy and a girl, and I'm not crazy about my daughter playing volleyball and might steer her away from that because of concussion concerns as much as my son from football. And honestly, I'd just tell both of them about the dangers and see if it makes sense. I played pop Warner for a year and quit because I didn't like the violence and realized I wasn't all that good at it. So I'm guessing most people make that determination.
Also, let's be honest, all sports have the potential for lingering injuries, as are a slew of other mundane activities like driving a car. You can only tell your children what you know and hope they make sound decisions.

I was excited when they signed him because the team has been in need for impact edge rushers for years it seems and Johnson fits that bill. Then one thing I'm not worried about with this staff is coaching up a guy on technique. If Johnson has the tools, he'll be hard to stop.
