Still lots of time to get the win. MSU has been lucky.

Makes sense; good he got his degree and he'll get a chance to compete somewhere else.
It does seem like an uptick recently, but perhaps most kids didn't realize it was as easy in years past.

Good luck to him. Glad he got his degree.
|12 hours 19 min ago||But oftentimes it isn't||
But oftentimes it isn't because Beilein did anything wrong. We look at kids who flip to Michigan football and sometimes forget that Michigan is an elite name in CFB, and the teams they flip from aren't and that's sometimes just what happens. For all of UM's recent BBall success, Duke, Arizona, Kentucky, UNC, Kansas, etc. are the blue bloods of the sport, and when they call top-flight kids will listen. I'm honestly not sure how much Beilein can do with some kids who are being courted by everyone, and for others you do tend to lose more recruits than you land, even at the elite programs.
Yes, Michigan needs elite wings. But if they don't get them, so be it.

We are basing lots of this on 20-ish games. What Michigan doesn't seem to have is any kid who'll be 1-and-done, which happens from time to time.
|12 hours 26 min ago||Well, a large part of the||
Well, a large part of the drop is due to injuries, the stupid loss of McGary, Horford deciding he'd rather struggle in FL instead of A2, and some bad luck.
I'd rather Michigan replace high recruits with other high recruits in a perfect world, but in this world in which Beilein seems to have a particular player/standard he will accept and not delve too deeply into the seedy underbelly of CBB, I'm fine with him recruiting kids who can win in his system.
|12 hours 33 min ago||Matta is a very talented||
Matta is a very talented recruiter, probably better than Beilein will ever be. But at the same time, we've seen his teams struggle mightily, in part, when those pieces don't work together.
People keep freaking out about recruiting even though Michigan gets "good enough" kids to compete most years, and as they develop they clearly become better players. That isn't a bad thing, and if it means Michigan gets blitzed every couple of years but is other consistent and competitive, I'll take it. I don't think OSU is overly shady (though you'd be kidding yourself if you didn't think stuff went down there considering what we've seen under the football coaches), but just because they get some high-end recruits doesn't mean Michigan is cratering.

So the kid was caught in the act, was arrested, and then left the school. Pretty cut-and-dry to me. I know people like to bash PSU because that is a clown show there, but these are different circumstances. And let's not forget, Stanford hasn't always been great handling sexual assaults.
Nobody is defending rape or claiming this isn't the right decision, but this feels like a thread designed to shit on PSU versus actually, constructively adding to the discussion surrounding sexual assaults and how they are handled on college campuses.

Ah yes, the "gross generalizations" combined "blame the victim" rationalizations. Oh, also, poor people are greedy AND stupid!
We should just turn all middle-class people into hats and boots for our elites.

Wish him luck. His time never worked out here on the field, but he absolutely put his heart into his time at UM.

Meh, Michigan was never going to be an elite recruiting school with Beilein at the top, but they can be incredibly successful grabbing the random top-50 kid and then pulling in solid 3/4* recruits who fit the system. Yes, Kentucky, Duke, Kansas, etc. always tend to recruit well, but they have different needs and different team composition than UM. This is the variance with a Beilein team, and yet the fact this team is 6-3 in a decent conference with all the defections and injuries speaks immensely for how this team will continue to compete year-in/year-out.

And yet kids keep signing there. But I'm happy the NCAA is keeping an eye out for the important stuff: coaches buying kids sandwiches and players signing autographs and then selling them.

The basic argument he is making holds true, namely that if you have local talent try to nab those kids because even if they aren't stars, they are more likely to stick around and give you some continuity. But elite programs recruit nationally because they can, and usually can do so without worrying about losing local kids who grew up watching you. So basically this is one of those really trivial articles that tries sound More controversial than it is.

So now Michigan has to deal with two 4* kids at MSU that otherwise would have wound up at UK and off the schedule? Man, I'm laughing all the way to the bank.
|2 days 4 hours ago||I have family and friends||
I have family and friends that went to NW and ND, and while one of them was reasonably affluent, most were not. And to be honest, the money doesn't always mean a whole lot in the end; the reason many kids from well-to-do families do well is because the same genes and drives that made their parents tend to be passed down to their kids. And at least here in NYC to the parents I've spoken to, they know of NW as a good school but it doesn't seem to carry any more cache than UM, ND, Washington U, etc. Really on UChicago seems to be treated differently, and to be fair that's only as a business school.

He really should figure out, even generally, what he wants to study. If his ultimate goal is going to require a professional degree such as MBA/JD/MD, all the schools should have similar cache provided he does well. But if you are going for engineering or CS, for example, UM is significantly better, while NU is fantastic at journalism and ND is the tops in terms of faux-elitism. And from a financial standpoint, figure out what the damage will be everywhere (some private schools give you more financial aid, but there are differences between outright grants and loans, obviously).
As was mentioned in some other thread, have your sister tell him this is a very important decision, and as such she'll be making it for him, and to pack his bags for A2.

What I figured. I don't get WTKA but I figured that would have been discussed at some point.
|2 days 10 hours ago||Yeah, I kind of doubt||
Yeah, I kind of doubt Mattison, who has been one of the best recruiters in college when he coached there, would say anything that would insult someone in the way Neal claimed he did. It didn't work out; surprised his Dad and him went to the press about it, but I'm sure he'll do fine at Nebraska. Michigan will survive.
As for deWeaver, that felt like a weird marriage when it happened, given the uncertainty with Hoke. I don't think Michigan will have too much trouble attracting a suitable replacement, though. I'd be surprised if Michigan flipped Eason, but I could see Costello maybe coming to Michigan. The kid has undobutedly been hearing about Harbaugh for years in CA, and with a year to mull it over there are few coaches better suited to take advantage of pro QBs in college.
|2 days 11 hours ago||Yeah, they're losses you see||
Yeah, they're losses you see on the resume of bubble teams. They won't obviously help Michigan, but as far as anchors go they aren't as bad as they looked when they happened.
|2 days 11 hours ago||I think you almost always||
I think you almost always want to go to the NCAA tourney over the NIT. Yes, Michigan could go 1-and-done in the tourney, but they could also make the Sweet 16 with a nice matchup and some luck. Hell, they nearly beat Wiscy; they can hang with anyone they'd see in the first two rounds. If you go to the NIT, your best bet is a long run to a secondary title and I guess that helps player development somewhat, but for recruiting and the kids who worked this year you want that "reward" of a national game.
|2 days 11 hours ago||He looks lost; he doesn't||
He looks lost; he doesn't look disinterested. He's probably pretty discouraged, and it may take an off-season to figure it out. But this is a kid who seems to have all the tools you need to be a monster in Beilein's system, but perhaps it will take a year for the mental parts (defensive rotation, spacing, etc.) to click, especially given the step-up for him from Hs to college. Some kids just take longer.
|2 days 12 hours ago||It's all about context; early||
It's all about context; early in a game I think it makes sense to take points, but once you get a feel for how each team's offense and defense is playing, it might be worth going for it even if the 3 points are pretty easy. This study is interesting, though, in that it probably pushes those in-between distances more to FG shots than 4th-down conversions earlier in games.

It was one of the few meltdowns that never went beyond "nobody understands your arguments, so that's why they are negging you", as usually around here someone calls someone else a name or says something offensive after a couple of posts.
