Good. Never was a good fit, and no reason to keep this going. Maybe now the team will try to spread out the court a bit more.

|5 days 17 hours ago||Again, why people are||
Again, why people are expecting an answer now still befuddles me. Harbaugh isn't going to call someone and say "would you hate me if I didn't come?" Harbaugh is a lot of things, but giving a shit about what other people think isn't one of them.
We'll know when we know; until then, the fact a guy isn't on Brian's "Ace Williams" list doesn't mean everything he says is gospel.

Thanks with the update Ace. Glad to see you back writing these previews.
I'm terrified about SMU, if for no other reason than the fact this team hasn't looked particularly good recently. I do have a feeling, though, that this will be another close game, and maybe this team will finally get a break and pull one out.

Do you mean the one that question Brady Hoke and openly wondered if he had even a 0% chance of being the next HC? Brian nearly had to eat a hat when that hire was made.

Prom is going to be so awesome!
I've never understood people thinking any guy pinged by a search committee is a viable option. The fact someone asked if a coach is alive doesn't mean he's getting an offer, and the overreaction on the interwebs about it is one of the funnier aspects of this search.
|6 days 1 hour ago||So basically what everyone||
So basically what everyone kind of expected? 6 years at $49M seemed a bit high; @ 7/8 years gives them a little wiggle room for negotiations but is still quite high.
|6 days 1 hour ago||I think he knows his chance||
I think he knows his chance is slim so he isn't going to crap on the school in the process. I'm not sure if he knows much more than that, though.

He's going to Oakland and threatening whichever Davis is in charge to stay out of "family business."

Lot guys getting additions to their houses thanks to Michigan's coaching search.
|6 days 21 hours ago||Again, Michigan isn't going||
Again, Michigan isn't going to outbid an NFL job, and all the talk about that stuff feels like a smokescreen. The issue is whether or not Harbaugh wants to coach in college again, and this offer simply tells him he'll be treated appropriately if he does. The only concern would have been had the offer been something like 6 years, $25M or something like that, which would be very low and feel like a step down.
Michigan won't win an arms' race with billion-dollar owners and The Shield if that is what Harbaugh cares about. But this is a good offer, and I'm fine if it sits out there. It doesn't change the calculus.
|6 days 21 hours ago||The Miles situation seems to||
The Miles situation seems to be largely 1-sided. I think his agent talked up Michigan feeling him out, but ol Les just needs to accept that there are forces working against him at UM that will proabbly always preclude him being a HC here going forward, unless he just outlives everybody or there is a massive upheavel. So I never much cared about that situation because it seemed driven mostly by him.
The "leak" makes total sense - agents and bosters talk. It is what happens. Thinking it was going to be kept quiet for weeks was always impossible.
Michigan might not get Harbaugh, but I will give credit to this coaching search in that it is looks like an actual, professional organization doing it, not the clown show we've seen for years around here.

While I will never be the biggest fan of all this hoopla and do wonder the long term future of Harbaugh at michigan, I will take immense pleasure in seeing all of these "reporters" in the NFL made to look like idiots for doggedly sticking to their incorrect talking points
|6 days 23 hours ago||I wouldn't blame him||
I wouldn't blame him regardless. He doesn't owe the university or this team anything.
|6 days 23 hours ago||It's the smugness of the NFL||
It's the smugness of the NFL reporters that drives people crazy. Everyone is happy Harbaugh got a good offer, but it is annoying to read NFL guys act like Michigan insiders/fans are foolish because this is news to them.

The NFL is the ultimate walled garden - expecting them to report anything novel or insider-y is foolish at this point.

Michigan will take junior college students who come in with the appropriate classes and can keep up academically to a sufficient degree. Just because other schools have different standards doesn't mean Michigan is doing something wrong.
|1 week 17 min ago||I never said he doesn't||
I never said he doesn't deserve the money, only that optically it looks a little weird for the football coach to be offered that much money from a state school in a state with a still-high unemployment rate. I get how life and capitalism works, and (in theory) Harbaugh will be well worth the investment, but a little bit of me is bothered by the fact that the guy running the team is getting millions around the same time the state of Michigan passes a law that precludes the athletes, the people who actually play the sport and justify the coach's salary, aren't allowed to unionize and continue to be treated as fungible labor with few opportunities to gain legal compensation for their services as well.

This isn't a shot at the OP, but could we just create a general thread where people can post assorted articles written about Harbaugh and Michigan's offer? Would save some board traffic for all of these similarly-themed articles.
|1 week 38 min ago||There is no way the||
There is no way the University will lower their JuCo standards, and it's not like Harbaugh recruits like that anyway. I'm sure they'll let a couple in like they always have, but if Cowherd is reporting stuff like that it just confirms how much of an uninformed goober he is.
|1 week 58 min ago||I used to work for an||
I used to work for an advertising company that had a CMO with a connection with Forbes. They will literally post anything you give them if it can be stretched out to 500+ words and get them links. I'm sure there are good reporters working there, but I'm not surprised stuff likes this gets published online.
|1 week 1 hour ago||I am amazed that a guy with||
I am amazed that a guy with Michigan ties - he has a f*cking winged helmet on the wall behind him in every talking head shot - would be regurgitating such drivel and irrelevant information in this coaching search. I'm sure it's his job to do so, but you'd think the NFL would have figured out by now that they are pretty bad at PR, and stuff like this doesn't help that image one bit.

I was a TA for 280 back in the early 00's and all I can say is put the work in and you'll be okay. The biggest mistake I saw was students who didn't come to office hours or open lab starting the projects with a couple days to go and being lost.
|1 week 13 hours ago||I agree that the ball is in||
I agree that the ball is in Harbaugh's court, and if he passes on Michigan it won't be because Michigan screwed anything up. They are treating this like a professional, well-run organization would, and that is refreshing given the clown show we've seen around here for 7 years.
I will make the obligatory "public school in economically-troubled state offering the most money ever to a football coach" statement, but at the same time Michigan is kinda barely a state school anymore given the limited assistance they receive from Lansing and their significant out-of-state demographic. Let's just hope Harbaugh accepts and the fanbase can move on to the next stage.
|1 week 13 hours ago||I agree it is not optimal||
I agree it is not optimal that the figures are out, but at the same time it will be a bidding war regardless, and Michigan will lose in that situation. Harbaugh will come to Michigan if he wants to coach college again, and I don't expect money will be much of a factor if he stays in the NFL.

I imagine him doing this entire press conference with a cat on his shoulder.
|1 week 16 hours ago||I guess I'm just overly||
I guess I'm just overly pessimistic. This here blog thought Dave Brandon had a pimp hand after his first couple press conferences, and we all know how that played out.
I just worry that there are voices beyond Hackett's that are still calling for a certain type of candidate that basically begins and ends with Harbaugh. I think people believe when I say that they don't have a backup plan that they don't have a person - I'm sure they do have a person they'd settle on and they pretty much know they'll get. But what has submarined Michigan the past 2 coaches has as much to do with on-field performance as it has been the culture/machinations that occur in the athletic department. And that's why I worry.
