Yeah, I remember when Brian…

Yeah, I remember when Brian was really enamored with Bob Stitt and we'd get posts about hiring him as OC every year. Then he got a shot at an FCS blue blood and shit the bed so hard that he hasn't worked in football coaching for 5 years.

Hart was in a role that's…

Hart was in a role that's light on Xs and Os coaching and usually heavy on recruiting and he sucked at that aspect. It's really that simple. Moore seems to be extremely serious about upping our game in terms of talent attraction and that meant no more Indiana level recruiting at RB coach.

Logical move is for UConn to…

Logical move is for UConn to also join the MAC in football

what makes people think…

what makes people think Griese wants to come here

like seriously, I love Michigan as much as any alum but I'm not rearranging my life to go work there just for shits and giggles and neither are you. He has a sweet job with plenty of opportunity for advancement within the NFL, the pinnacle of the sport.

Nearly as many people just watched him coach in a Super Bowl as watched the Moon Landing. Would you go back to college?

I think the issue here is…

I think the issue here is that he, along with Bump Elliot and several other Michigan alumni who were athletic directors at the time, voted for Ohio State to go to the Rose Bowl in 1973

Bump Elliot was no slouch…

Bump Elliot was no slouch after transferring from Purdue either

oh well if Sam Webb says it,…

oh well if Sam Webb says it, it must be totally accurate... we all know Sam is totally not a program stooge sometimes to the point of fabulism!

rumor is he wants the Giants…

rumor is he wants the Giants OLB coach from last year, Drew Wilkins, who has literally never worked in college except as a student assistant

do you guys seriously…

do you guys seriously believe that the only thing that prevents us from hiring people is Warde not spending money

like it's impossible to imagine a guy would rather interview with the Seahawks before taking our job and it has nothing to do with Warde at all

He's a big Xs and Os chart…

He's a big Xs and Os chart guy whose analysis often appears in UFRs and Brian's more analytical post.

because no member of the…

because no member of the Harbaugh family has ever made a bad hire... Greg Roman is an incredible OC, Pep Hamilton worked out perfectly here, etc.

Coaches know ball, sure. Plenty of other people do, too, and pro coaches fuck up hires all the damn time.

Don Brown was an elite DC…

Don Brown was an elite DC and his scheme was world beating until it wasn't but he did nothing to change it, he's still running it as is at UMass. There is no reason to believe that coaches, especially coaches in their 60s with 12 years of coordinating experience behind them, are going to just run whatever we want them to.

Maybe he adapts to our personnel, but I know you've been around long enough to see us attempt to make Scott Shafer run the 3-3-5 stack and Al Borges put Denard Robinson under center. Assuming coaches are going to change their stripes is not a winning proposition and we all know it.

You ever hear the phrase…

You ever hear the phrase play the ball not the man? I come here to read about UM football, not the personalities of posters people hate. It honestly kind of annoys me how little analysis there has been on the main page of the coaching changes, and it feels like any time a rumor is posted here people go apeshit like this isn't a discussion board for Michigan football somehow

To be completely fair to…

To be completely fair to Collin, he thought that about Macdonald based on all-22 footage of Ravens teams coordinated by the guy we are about to hire. And he thought it in large part because Martindale blitzes a fuckton, which Macdonald did not do.

I think there are lots of reasons to be concerned about hiring Wink. It is not ideal to be hiring a DC in February, that much is true. We could've gone after the ex-Ravens DC at UCLA who ended up going to USC, for instance. But we have money to burn and all the resources in the world. It is legitimately disconcerting for me that the best thing you can say about any hire we've made is "I'm whelmed"... I'll wait and see what happens at LBs and DL, who we can find to coach edge guys and safeties, etc. but this round of attrition has been bad and the replacements are unproven

I honestly don't know why so…

I honestly don't know why so many posters here have fallen into the trap of LALALALALALA DON'T TELL ME THINGS I DON'T WANT TO KNOW!

like ok cool let's read Seth saying that Wink invented the defense we've run for the past three years and never look deeper to see if that's really true because we'd rather know less about the direction of the football program

idk why all of you are so…

idk why all of you are so allergic to this one guy on here just because what he says is negative

like god forbid, maybe we should go back to just posting FIRE WARDE in every thread or talk more about some dumb non UM related stuff. Clearly the front page here has taken a "who cares about the coaching staff turnover, won a natty lol" approach to things and this board seems to agree with that

why are you here then

why are you here then

Exactly, NIL is a…

Exactly, NIL is a fundamental right and it cannot really be restricted in any way. No court is going to allow it. The only thing that could change things is employment and high enough salaries to make NIL less compelling as a factor, but nothing is ever going to be able to put the legal bagman aspect to bed forever.

I think there are valid…

I think there are valid concerns about the ways in which Mac and Minter evolved Wink's base defense. He blitzes a lot more and leaves DBs out on in coverage way more than we've been. Just repeating "he invented the defense!" doesn't really address those concerns

Nobody ever does, hence half…

Nobody ever does, hence half a week of people bizarrely claiming we weren’t offering big money to a Elston which was the opposite of what Sam reported

every scheme gets figured…

every scheme gets figured out eventually, you can go from 2016 Don Brown to 2020 Don Brown real quick

I don’t know about better…

I don’t know about better but it’s notable that they both coach DL. I like Elston but I also won’t turn down a guy who coaches a key position group on a great defense that made back to back Super Bowls

You want to know an…

You want to know an effective recruiting strategy? Flashing a Super Bowl ring, maybe even another one by the time the weekend is over.

Seems good, especially if he…

Seems good, especially if he brings in the South Carolina LB coach who was his main assistant in Baltimore and is their top recruiter

He followed a bunch of Texas…

He followed a bunch of Texas and USC players and coaches on Twitter

you could've said this about…

you could've said this about Mac and it would have been even more explicitly true

Assistant DL coach in…

Assistant DL coach in Baltimore when Cullen was there.

It seems like Sherrone has…

It seems like Sherrone has prioritized continuity on offense which makes sense but also is not what I would've preferred.

Any names?

Any names?

Elston called plays at ND…

Elston called plays at ND for a game and it was a disaster and they immediately decided not to promote him. If keeping him was conditional on him being the DC, well that's a shame

Cullen seems like a good…

Cullen seems like a good hire. We can all joke about the Wendy's but it sounds like he got sober and turned his life around to become a Super Bowl champion coach and an NFL DC (albeit under Urban in J'ville which lol). Seems like a way better bet than Wink, who people hate.

I just don't believe that…

I just don't believe that our wealthiest alums are ever going to be in for this kind of thing. Especially the ones who grew accustomed to Bo Schembechler telling them everyone but us was paying players... it just encourages you to think nothing's changed now and we don't have to pay to win.

Besides, a lot of our alumni base are the wine and cheese set. Insofar as many of them care about football, "winning" is defined very differently than perpetual nattys and probably looks more like a 9-3/10-2 every year sort of program

Have you ever talked to NFL…

Have you ever talked to NFL fans? They literally do not care how good anyone is in college

I don't have the will to…

I don't have the will to actually follow through with it but everything I used to really love about college football is going away. I loved dynasties and coaching trees and the deep lore. I loved the pageantry and the traditions. I liked the regionality and the sectional nature, where teams from far away played different sorts of ball and had their own traditions and rivalries and lore. All that is gone. Coaches who've spent their whole careers in the Midwest just up and leave a school like fucking Notre Dame for SEC money, games against Purdue are being replaced with teams like UCLA I care fuck all about.

At the end of the day if it is just about football, the NFL is a better product. At the bare minimum, they don't shove nearly as many ad breaks into every broadcast. I used to loathe the plastic nature of the league but if we're just headed for a super league in CFB anyway, it's going to be just as plastic. My hope is that when all the dust settles my other alma mater, Northwestern, will be left out and can go play in some sort of reconstituted version of D3 with all the other leftovers and that might be a closer approximation of what I loved about college football. In the meantime, I've been kind of enjoying getting back into the NFL for the first time in years with the Lions last season.

But then there's the Michigan of it all, what it has meant to me over the years. It's how I bond with my dad despite serious political and cultural differences. It's what spurred me to school, where I met my best friends and my wife. The fandom has been such a deeply ingrained part of me as a person that I don't know that I can ever truly let go even when so much of the joy has gone. At least we had this season, this last season where things at least resembled everything that came before. I can cling to this when I'm watching us play Florida in the Dr. Pepper College Super Bowl presented by Capital One and Taco Bell in 10 years time.

Why do you assume the issue…

Why do you assume the issue is that we aren’t paying them when Sam is suggesting the problem is but they both feel they deserve to be DC?

Like if Sherrone wants to fuck around talking to the worst NFL DC with a two-year showcause instead of considering an internal promotion on defense, maybe that’s not on Warde?

The whole “pffft those who…

The whole “pffft those who stay” line doesn’t really work in the age of penalty, free transfers and NIL dawg

Yeah, honestly, this is not…

Yeah, honestly, this is not what he did when he left Stanford? If I were a Chargers fan, I would be a little bit concerned about my team, hiring a bunch of college assistants while the pro talent starts getting away

What did you think him…

What did you think him saying “Michigan and the Chargers are the same team” meant? It was obviously him saying he wanted the work family he kept talking about loving so much to stay intact.

I mean at a certain point, I…

I mean at a certain point, I think it’s kind of weird that a coach with tons of NFL connections, including his own former staff, is so intent on hiring college lifers with no pro experience.

This is really bad, and to a…

This is really bad, and to a great extent really undercuts the entire case for hiring Moore without a search. The whole point was supposed to be continuity. Now it seems like the entire NFL wants anyone we would consider and the lack of desire to promote internally on that side of the ball is costing us our two best position coaches and recruiters.

if given a choice between continuity on offense and defense, I know most of us would have chosen the latter.

Worth noting, though rarely…

Worth noting, though rarely reported on, that Jay was adopted by Jim from a prior relationship his first wife had. His other kids from the first marriage are like 10ish+ years younger than Jay.

Not that this really matters at all, just some context for the especially large gap with Jay

if you talk to eastern…

if you talk to eastern school fans, the neutral site games are downright sacrosanct

he isn't their defensive…

he isn't their defensive coordinator, he is their d-line coach. Also he won a Super Bowl with them literally last year so that's pretty good

Southeastern Michigan football fans might know this guy best as the Lions assistant who was fired after going through a Wendy's drivethrough naked and drunk in 2008

Yeah, when he says Michigan…

Yeah, when he says Michigan and the Chargers are one team, I think what he’s more saying is that he wants to bring his “work family” to LA with him rather than some experiment in being head coach emeritus from the coast

Probably because instead of…

Probably because instead of becoming a head coach himself, Wink left for New York and got shitcanned

To be totally fair, and I…

To be totally fair, and I think we should fire Juwan ASAP, Brian went beyond merely suggesting we fire Harbaugh and openly speculated that he had severe brain damage

this is the price of success…

this is the price of success

you are never going to some Bo style staff where all the coordinators stick around for 10 years at a time and the position coaches never aspire to anything else ever again... in retrospect it is fucking weird that we had Jerry Hanlon producing all pro linemen every other year for 25 years, most coaches of that stature today would be long gone

It was reported by Sam Webb,…

It was reported by Sam Webb, it’s not just message board fodder

I loathe it, it looks like… I loathe it, it looks like the V in West Virginia’s logo Tragically it is now on every national championship hat Nike has produced
