I don't think you understand, I think his fucking up the fan experience was secondary to how he treated people working for the university. I'm sure Brian and others could point to his belittlement of the staff at the university. The comments about the alumni association were only the tip of the iceberg, if you asked many of the people who worked with him, or for him that were not kissing his ass, "piece of shit" would be the appropriate term.

Martin was basically good guy and good athletic director. As I recall he was drafted for the position. Sure he made mistakes but he did break things that did not need to be broken.

Brian - I feared for your life as I thought Brandon might become unhinged at your criticism. Glad he is gone but I'd still be careful in dark alleys. Did you ever receive threats?
I love the piece as an old guy, but my 22 year old soon to be M grad is even more aligned with you than I am. This is not a old guy "get off my lawn" rant but the truth for fans of all ages.

Is douche bag on the list? I've heard the douche bag union is politicing for it's inclusion of banned words. The preferred new term was going to be enema bag, but that was vetoed by the consitpation lobby. Now I have heard the work bag is out due to opposition by old ladies and the makers of Glad Bags.
I have also heard Thomas Crapper's family is asking for crap to be banned as it soils the family name.

Perception is different, at least it wwas when I went to Ann Arbor Huron. I had many friends reaching for the Ivy schools and I'm not sure Michigan was a dream school because so many kids got in back then. Also a lot of kids went to top small liberal arts colleges. I had friends going to Harvard, Yale, Cal Tech, MIT I was the "average" one going to Michigan. But when your friends are professors kid's it is different. My son who is a U of M senior was one of only a handful of kids that made it into Michigan from our suburban Detroit high school.

Rumsey, Fall '76 and Winter '76. My floor had Harlen Huckleby and Russell Davis along with Curtis Greer and several other football players. Hell of a dorm basketball team made up of football players.

West Quad slingshots. Surgical tubing and funnels. The tuning was held on either side of the window frames. Designed by engineers and operated by football players who would pull the funnel back until they almost reached the hall, launching water balloons at South Quad. The launch force was so hard that the water balloons would sometimes break at the launch. We did manage to break a South Quad window with a water balloon so that stopped that activity.
Also fixing the phone so it would keep ringing even after it was taked off the hook and pennying the person in the room while thr phone continued to ring for an hour.

Yes, record and jail time, if appropriate. This was not just some light fun. They should get whatever punishment anyone doing that amount of damage gets charged with. So if someone steals a car they get charged, they don’t have the option of simply returning the car for no penalty.
I have two kids in college and I would expect them to get the same treatment if they were stupid enough to do this.

I grew up in Ann Arbor and went to Michigan. My dad had a business just off campus. I stayed in the dorm and apartments and did not live at home in the summers. It was great being close to my parents. You could have short visits that tended to be better than living with them. For me it was great.

|6 weeks 4 days ago||Milford||
I raised my kids in Milford. The politics in the Ann Arbor were a bit to left of center for me. Much of my perspective comes from being born, raised and educated in the city. I am less in touch with me the politics since I left. I do think I got a good education and the diversity of not just race but economics and religion was nice. Going to school with professor' kid was cool. And I also knew Bo's stepsons, Canham and Ufer. My dad was raised there and owned a small business just off campus. I am thinking of moving back when I retire but glad my kids did not go to school there.

I love TC but there are fewer job opportunties. Several years ago I was there for work for a few weeks with an man of color from Detroit. He asked one of us "where are all of the black folks?" I'm sure it has changed some but if you are looking for diversity TC is not the place.
|6 weeks 5 days ago||Changed||
That neighbohood has changed in the last 40 years. Spring street near Knights market was a bit scary in the 1960's with race issues. As property values began rise the neighborhood got gentrified and more upscale.
The 60's in Ann Arbor as a kid was not a pleasant time but I am sure that was true elsewhere as well. Again I think it depends upon your political leanings, the farther left you are, the more comfortable Ann Arbor will be.
|6 weeks 5 days ago||Depends upon your political leanings||
I grew up in Ann Arbor and love the place but I preferred to raise my kids elsewhere. So it depends a bit on where you are on the political spectrum as to whether you will enjoy living in Ann Arbor with kids. For young adults and retirees I think Ann Arbor is great.
Dexter, Chelsea, Plymouth, South Lyon are all close to A2 without the taxes and politics but also without all of the cool Ann Arbor stuff.
