|2 weeks 1 day ago||1969 Missouri||
I was 11 and went with some friends because you could get tickets for a couple or bucks as a grade schooler at the gate. Michigan was crushed by Dan Devine's Missouri Tigers 40-17.
I remember having plenty of room to roam and watching from the box seats. Michigan used to set aside the first few rows with box style individual seats. These seats were lightly used as the sight lines were horrible before they lowered the field. We also spent time running around the wide open spaces of the upper end zone as there were only about 65k people there.
I wondered a bit about our new coach Bo after getting creamed.
At the time I was also a Packers fan and Dan Devine went on to coach the Packers.

I have a home in the Detroit suburbs. Comcast triple play, extra phone line (2 total), 3 HD boxes one digital box = $160 no HBO but BTN and the other basic stuff. Have to call and bitch periodically to knock down the price.
Cottage in northern Michigan - No cable, no reliable cell service (even with an external Wilson sntenna), no AT&T or Verizon offerings. Have internet with Mispot, a rural 4G internet provider (not many choices around here) $45 for 10gig of data. Also there is n the M22 Project in my area Wifi that is bigger $'s but unlimited data. For TV have Dish HD 200 channels does not include BTN but I can have it turned on for a day at a time for a couple of bucks - $55 for 1 HD TV. No cell service otherwise I would use my work provided 4G phone for data
Dish customer service has been great and they allow downgrading their service to about $5 a month if you don't want it for awhile. Not sure how Dish would be for multiple TVs.
I hate Comcast with a passion. We are considering a Slingbox for my son in A2 to cut his Comcast bill to just internt.
Anyone here have experience with a Slingbox for football games?

Depends upon how handy you are. I have paid to have them done and have done my own. DO NOT use the big box installers from Home Depot or Lowes as those guys usually suck in my experience. Unless you are pretty skilled I would avoid doing them yourself.
I had a great deal of success by going to the local window/door company (Lee Wholesale) and using their installers. This type of company usually sells many brands of windows so they can give you the pros and cons of each. Wallside will sell you Wallside no matter what. Lee Wholesale was in New Hudson (near Novi, MI) but they have been acquired by ABC Supply - http://www.abcsupply.com/ and I don't know much about them. You might also want to check with Fingerle Lumber if you are in A2 and they sell windows and my have suggested installers. Overall check out a local independent window company before making a decision.
I checked out Renewal by Anderson and they were really pricy.

Band day has been credited to Canham. From DB's blog "Canham ... Band Day was just one of his ingenious ideas. He brought high school musicians -- and their parents, of course -- into Michigan Stadium to help create a special day of entertainment and Wolverine football." But I stand corrected as Wikipedia has it starting in the late 1940's.
I do think in season performance affects sales, but not season ticket sales for sure. You don't think winning brings more fans into the stadium that season? Or that losing causes no shows?
"wiped out by Don Canham to make way for the almighty dollar." Band Day was created to fill emply seats, once there were no longer 20,000 free seats for crappy games, it went away.
I do agree there is an attendance lag effect for on field performance both good and bad, but that can be exacerbated by price actions.

Bo Schembechler the coach could've and probably would've struggled in this era that we're in. Not just on the field, but all the off-field shit too. Maybe not, but to compare him to someone from today is kinda silly."
So things change. I guess JFK and Lincoln would suck as Presidents today. I believe people who perfomed well in the past have the capability to adjust and perform well today. I agree that comparing atheletes from different eras does not work perfectly, but administrators and coaches? I think in general top people would do well regardless of era. I think you could drop Canham and Schembechler in today and they would do just fine.

I have been going to games since 1969. When Canham took over he had something called band day to fill what was otherwise a half empty stadium for games against Northwestern. I used to buy walk up student tickets (K1-12) for $2. Typically sellouts were only a couple of games a year. He took that and with Schembechler building the product on the field, turned it into years of sellouts and a waiting list.

My daughter (appllied fall of '13) had about a 3.7 with I think a 29 ACT with similar classes and was a competitve dance team and did not make it into Engineering.
I think the Hight School you come from makes a big difference. I mentioned a hook earlier. You need to find something thast makes you stand out and make that part of your application and essay. Being from TN alone might help.

As Don mentions there was no booby prize in those years.

I agree. I was born and raised in Ann Arbor and graduated from M in '80 and had many Sparty friends. I went to a few games with Sparties in the 80's and it was a civilized rivalry. I sense a darkness creeping into the rivalry that did not used to be there. It may be that MSU winning has simply emboldened Sparty fans.
In looking back I don't remember hating MSU coaches like Perless or Saban or OSU coaches like Tressel or Cooper but think Dantonio is a dick at the level of Woody Hayes. I know my dislike for MSU has really ramped up since he became coach. I think he condones and encourages dirty play. I have no problem with Izzo even when he was regularly destroying us.
It's interesting people choosing MSU as a backup to Michigan. I applied to 3 schools, Michigan, MSU and Western. I remember getting my MSU acceptance letter "You are a Spartan!" and feeling dirty. I've raised both my kids as Michigan fans and neither would even apply to MSU even though I encouraged them to do so (the damage had already been done by then). I think journalism and other degrees hospitality, landscape architecture, etc make a case for attending MSU, but I would have chosen a lesser school rather than attend MSU. I know that is not logical.

Two things about your story ring true:
1. Michigan has a large contingent of arrogate asses (to quote famous MSU coach Daryl Rodgers). It's only after getting into the working world that it get's tempered.
2. Many MSU grads are insecure about their school (not attributing this to the author of this thread). It's a good school with lots to offer but many grads will bristly at anything they see as a slight to their institution. The institution "chip on the shoulder" is massive.
Both of these are rank generalizations but I think those two issues will always have you caught in crossfire.
I'm glad you are on our side and am proud to have you a member of the Wolverine Nation.

Neither of mine would even apply to MSU. One is at Grand Valley and one at Michigan, both were very good students but Michigan is a bitch to get into now. There are plenty of other alternatives to MSU as a second choice if not Michigan. My wife was not happy that my kids would not consider MSU. I would have been fine if they attended MSU but the brainwashing was too intense for them to consider it.

Remember this when it was the Rose Bowl or nothing, there were no other bowl alternatives for Big Tem teams.

I know. I thought that was how it would work. I think if they used first come first served GA seating the student section would look much more filled that it is now. I know many students are pissed by arriving early and being forced into poor seats. For those few hundred that want to be sit in the first 5 rows that is great but it sucks for everyone else.
Think if every section of the stadium was forced into filling every seat, the top rows for games like Minnesota would be empty but it's masked by having empty seats through the section.
The way they are seating the students now makes any no shows obvious.
|45 weeks 3 days ago||This is exactly right. There||
This is exactly right. There is no GA seating as you are assigned a seat (given a specific ticket with a seat and row number) at entry to the stadium. My son has gotten crappy seats by showing up to early. For crappy games the new policy actually encourages late arrival so you can get seats higher up! General admission seating (first come first serve) would be much better as you could choose your seat.
|45 weeks 3 days ago||The students are being forced to sit in lower rows by design||
There is no attraction to the lower rows, the students are being forced there. See my 5 other posts in this thread on why that is.
|45 weeks 3 days ago||GA is causing empty seats||
GA is causing empty seats by not actually being GA. You are assigned a seat at admission to the stadium and the ushers are forcing students to take assigned seats. Have you seen the army of ushers in the student section? Arrive early and get crammed in a low row. Arrive late and sit where you want.
|45 weeks 3 days ago||The students can't spread out||
btw the students can't spread out as they are given a specific seat at entry and the ushers are enforcing that seat. That is why everyone is crammed in lower until the game starts.
|45 weeks 3 days ago||THERE IS NO GA!||
There is no GA seating as you are assigned a seat at entry to the stadium (the ushers hand you a ticket). Get there early and end up in row 10.
You actually get crappy seats by showing up too early. For crappy games the new policy actually encourages late arrival so you can get seats higher up! Genetal admission seating (first come first serve) would be much better as you could choose your seat. This would alievate the blank spots and would force late arrivals to have to find a seat.
As it is now arrive early, get crammed in with other students in low rows as the ushers are enforcing you sitting in the seat on your ticket, or arrive late and get a seat row 50 or higher.
It's the implementation of GA that sucks.

As a Alumni parent with children who have applied to (and one currently enrolled as a transfer) Michigan I can tell you alumni are given zero advantage when it comes to admission. In fact I think Michigan prides itself in having blinders on when it comes to legacy status. They claim there is some advantages to alumni children in admissions but I can't see it.
I no longer give to Michigan other than the athletic department.
Michigan make little effort to to try to assess, gauge or take into consideration passion for the university when it comes to admissions. I understand about the common app and the increased difficulty of gaining acceptance but Michigan makes zero effort to even make it appear like they give a shit about alumni when it comes to admission.
That said they can do whatever they like, just don't expect me to send more donation money to help pad the endowment.
My kids got into Case Western (engineering) Univ or Illinois and others but could not get into the school my father, wife and I attended?

LinkedIn is good for both job listings and better yet networking. The best luck I have had is to identify the companies I wanted to work for and approach them directly either through HR or someone on LinkedIn. They sometimes do not have open positions but will often talk to you, especially if you have made a decent case for why you think you would be a good fit for their company. It shows some initiative because you have already done some homework on them.
I'm not an engineer but I think that apprach would still work.

Another Softball (i.e. limited athletic ability) story. I played against Dave Gallagher a former All-American defensive tackle who played for Michigan 1971–1973 and in the Bears 1974-1979.
I was playing 3rd base and played as deep as I could without totally embarrasing myself (couple of feet into the outfield grass). I made a diving catch of a line drive off his bat. Sheer luck I am sure.
The neat thing about playing softball in Ann Arbor in the summers is you would be playing against Michigan athletes from all sports (a fair amount of hockey players).
I remember playing agains a track and field guy (shot put I think). He hit the ball so hard it was oblonged. I've never seen anyone deform a softball before.

Getting into colleges like Michigan and Harvard is a bitch these days. Michigan had 46,000+ applications for 4,000 spots. I'm sure Harvard is much more difficult. My kids are smart but don't go to a private High School that is a feeder to top colleges. Much like football recruiting, you just never know what is going to happen.
I think from a name perspective Harvard is superior. It's interesting to see all of the angst on site like college confidential about schools and ratings. For christ sake some components of life should not simply be about achievement. I'd advise my 12 year old daughter to give some thought about what is important to her and talk about life balance. Some people thrive on the challenge of being the best and some are consumed by it.
Mamby pamby words from a Ross grad no less.

My daughter is headed off to college but attended every home football game with me last year. She was waitlisted at Michigan and is planning to attend GVSU (I really liked our visit to Hope). My son will be a junior at Michigan next year. Neither of my kids would even apply to MSU which did not make my wife happy (M grad but thought MSU should be in the picture).
My daughter is not a big enough fan to read MGoBlog but my son is a huge U of M fan and has been for years.
BTW for anyone expecting your status as an alumni to help with your children's admission, you will be disappointed. I'm second generation alumni, my wife is an alumni, my son is a current student and my daughter is in the middle 50% on grades and scores for people accepted to U of M, but still no dice. As far as I can tell alumni status makes zero difference. Not even a tiny bit.

The Aggies had trounced highly rated Texas Tech in Lubbock the week before to become the fifth-ranked team in the national polls. They had an improving defense and, more impressively, enough offensive weapons to make NATO envious: David Walker, a heady senior quarterback; Curtis Dickey, the leading all-purpose runner in America (172.3 yards a game); Tony Franklin, who was averaging three field goals a game and George Woodard, a massive fullback who blasts into the line with the impact of a boulder hurtling down a steep slope.
A&M ran 273 pound fullback George Woodard into the center of the line 39 times.

Three missed field against OSU in the last minutes of the 1973 and 1974 were the worst.
In the 1973 Michigan–Ohio State game, we missed two fourth-quarter field goal attempts. With the game tied 10–10 we missed a 58-yard field goal. Got another shot with 24 seconds left to play but missed. Both teams finished the 1973 season with identical 10–0–1 records, and the Big Ten Conference athletic directors voted to send Ohio State to the 1974 Rose Bowl. Because Big Ten rules at that time allowed only one team to play in a post-season bowl game, Michigan did not play in a bowl game despite having an undefeated season.
In 1974 Ohio State led 12–10 nearing the end of the fourth quarter and we missed a 33 yard field goal to win that game.
I was at the Iowa, Syracuse, Oregon, the horror and many others but these two were the worst.

I call bullshit. Michigan is great at taking but not so good at giving. You will find out when your kid is trying to get accepted (btw mine did) and the University treats you like crap regardless of past donations. They like to pretend to be a private school when asking for donations but then have amnesia when it comes time for them to give back.
The same for tickets. I understand the need for revenue and don't have a problem with PSD's but at least give some credit to the season ticket holders who have shown the loyalty for the crappy BB product they have fielded for more than a decade. "Thanks for the loyalty, where is your $7,500?"
|2 years 24 weeks ago||This already happened once||
My Dad had 4 near center court tickets about row 8 or 10 (the last row of the temporary seats) since Crisler opened in 1969. Several years ago they reconfigured seats to bring students to the sidelines and he lost those seats because he did not pay the required fee. They did allow him to keep 2 seats nearby without a fee as I remember and got 2 got moved into the upper bowl about 1/2 way up on the sidelines.
They have touble selling tickets to many of the games today so hopefully Brandon will tread lightly. I do see guys like Al Glick (the guy who donated for the football practice facility) on the sidelines that will pay whatever is needed but don't think there are a ton of wealthy die hard M BB fans. The diehard BB fans I see are old and remember the glory years of the 70's and 80's so I'm not sure how this will play out.
I don't have season tickets because the driver from suburbia is a pain in the add during the week in the Winter so I just buy on the secondary market for peanuts for the cheap games. They have to market the hell out of the games to even sell them out, not sure how successful PSD's will be.

"revoke student ticket privileges for people who don't bother to show up"
I think this would be great. I have less of a problem with late, but when there are ton's of empty seats in the student section for Nebraska then something is wrong. If you are too busy or stressed to attend the games then don't buy tickets, or do a ticket share with a fellow student and split the games.
I went as a Freshman but attended less the next three years (I was working) so I get it. I just don't understand buying tickets and not showing up.

You can still get Dune Rides but you have to head south of TC a ways.
As I understand it this dune was a result of cutting all of the trees a long time ago and there is no additional ecological damage done by these rides (like there would uprooting dune grass, etc @ Sleeping Bear).
