Most MICHIGAN thing you've ever done? (funny, memorable, etc.) - Lived on the same street as Canham (took in his mail when they were on vacation), a block from Ufer and about a mile from Schembechler. Went to school with Bo's stepsons. Biggest in person Michigan sports memory #3 Michigan beating #19 (and future NCAA champ) Marquette 69-68 on March 6, 1978. Michigan's star player Ricky Green was limping around and ineffective but Michigan still won.

Try doggy day care if you have a good one and can afford it. We took our puppy to doggy day care frequently. She loved it, came home, ate and then passed out. Maybe a couple of days a week?
We did the puppy route but my wife and kids were home to take care of her. Still going at 15 years old - Welsh Springer. Other than happing a puppy is fun I think an adult adoption is a great choice.
That and look for your next job at a place that that offers work at home or allows dogs at work part time. I have a work at home job now and it makes caring for an old dog easier.

It seems like better helmet technology does help, but what technology and by how much is the question.
|5 weeks 5 days ago||I can't believe there is not||
I can't believe there is not a better helmet design by now. Using 40 year old tecnology seems odd. Could you use a soft outerlayer wuth a semi ridgid liner to cushion the blow? Being hit by something other than a bulletproof hard plastic shell should be examined.
I played for Tappan Junior High in the 1970's and we still had some leather helmets and getting hit by someone wearing a leather helmet was less painful than plastic. They provided more cushion in my opinion. Isn't there a high tech way to significantly improve the helmet and make it less of a weapon?
|6 weeks 3 days ago||So the community college or||
So the community college or commuter college (aka U of M Dearborn for example) and good frugal alternatives, but there is something to be said for the college experience. I think many of my generation (kids in college now) tend to do too much for their kids and the experience of fending for yourself is a good life lesson. Handling money, paying rent, washing clothes, finding an apartment and figuring our how to feed yourself - among many others - are good things our kids learned.
I see the college as training wheels for life where mistakes seem to cost less.
|6 weeks 3 days ago||Slightly different||
Slightly different perspective. My father covered my college in the 1980's and he said it would be an in state public school unless I wanted to study something not avaialble at those schools. I'm not sure an 18 year old is in the best position on how to spend $200k+. If you can afford it that is great but I would rather have that money in my account towards retirement. I ended up offering the same deal to my kids, I would fund an in state education and they would have to cover the difference if they wanted to go to a private school or out of state. btw some out of state schools and private schools cost less than Michigan in state does.
I like the idea of avoiding student loans and the idea of a frugal education, as long as it meets the needs of the student. My wife lived at home and communted to U of M Dearborn. I do however belive there is some value to going away and living in a dorm.
My brother dropped $200k+ on a daughter to go to Harvard to study anthropology, I certainly would not have done that but it depends upon your avaialble funds.
I think your retirement needs to be funded before your kids education. If you can do both great but it should not be one or the other.

I have one child graduating from Michigan in May and another that is a sophmore. I leaned on the 529 when both were in school at the same time and cash flowed some of the expenses when I could.

However I can't use Dish for internet becasue the delay messes up with the VPN I need to get into my work network.
I'm currently using Verizon 4G for internet but since I'm not at the cottage very much the 4G is is affordable. If you need cellular booster antenna check out Wilson yagi antennas. I have some other wireless alternatives now but the upfront cost is very high.
I messed aroung with a wifi antenna and was able to pick up intermittant signals several miles away but am in a poor location for line of sight. If you have good line of sight to a public wifi you might want to give that a try.

"Officially, Tyrone Wheatley played in 14 games for the Giants a year ago. But the talented and enigmatic running back will tell you differently.
''I quit after the fifth game,'' Wheatley said today between practices at the Giants' training camp. ''I shouldn't have given up, but I did. That was it for the rest of the season. I was done.
''I tried my hardest whenever I was on the field, but everywhere else I had a blow-it-off attitude. I had been given this 'bad apple' label and I broke down. I didn't care. It affected everything else I did. But I have no one to blame but myself. I didn't deserve to be called a bad apple but I should have had thicker skin.''"
"But in the last two seasons, Wheatley has earned a reputation for being unenthusiastic, with stories of him falling asleep in meetings, missing treatment for injuries and botching assignments on the field. In response, Dan Reeves, the former Giants coach, used Wheatley sparingly and shunned any opportunity to give him praise."
That said, the article states he turned things around with the Giants.

I agree and think there is a cumulative affect. So the RR years were miserable but I thought it would get better with RR. I was not thrilled but OK with Hoke. We had a massive dose of luck in 2011 and I hoped the years of getting pantsed several times a year was over. Then 2013 happened. I don't have the patience to suck anymore, I had the patience for three years of RR but that is all gone. I generally support coaches and do not want to see Hoke gone but I just cannot put up with many more 2008-2010, 2013 years.
It's also easier to support the likable "going for 4th down Hoke" and not the "punt from the 37 we don't talk about injuries" paranoid Hoke. I am hopeful but impatient at the same time. I am getting tired of sucking.
I also used to be a Lions fan but they managed to beat that out of me during the Millen years. I no longer follow the Lions win or lose.

Thank you, I obviously agree. I don't need specifics but being somewhat forethcoming about injuries would be nice. I do not really like to figure out who is not playing by scanning the sidelines. I just think this is part of the tendency to say "fuck you" to the fans. Believe it or not we are customers and I like knowing who is going to play.

I am old and I think Michigan has more often has underachieved or been upset more than they have pulled the upset. Other than OSU in 1969 and through the Cooper years what were the big Michigan upsets when they deat a favored team? Or is is just that I remember the negatives? I remember a few times getting beatened by Minnesota, Iowa and others when we were highly favored. Maybe it's just that historically we have been good so being upset happens more frequently that upsetting other teams. Can someone rattle off some of our big upset wins outside of OSU?
|36 weeks 15 hours ago||Not looking for questionable||
Not looking for questionable "may play" details but for guys that are obviously out for weeks aka Morgan. It would be nice to know what the timeframe is. If you like being in the dark, then have at it. I just like to know if something a guy is day to day or whether the guy is missing an appendage. You really think Miami would significantly alter their game plan if Hoke said Peppers was "probable" or "out"? I see it as just a power play by Hoke to tweak the media and fans. And I like Brady, but preferred the straight talking fergoshsakes Brady over the paranoid Ft. Schembechler Brady.
|36 weeks 17 hours ago||As much as the punt was stupid, what is it about injuries?||
What is starting to irritate me about Hoke is less the stupid punt but the inability to talk about injuries. He is seemingly more insulated every day and what made him enjoyable to follow was his folksy demeanor which has mostly disappeared. If he is simply going to hole up in Schembechler Hall and feed us crap and lose games he is less appealing to me. One of the more refreshing things about RichRod was his willingness to discuss injuries. Why must Hoke protect such knowledge when my son sees Funchess walking around campus in a boot? It just seems childish.

I was 11 and went with some friends because you could get tickets for a couple or bucks as a grade schooler at the gate. Michigan was crushed by Dan Devine's Missouri Tigers 40-17.
I remember having plenty of room to roam and watching from the box seats. Michigan used to set aside the first few rows with box style individual seats. These seats were lightly used as the sight lines were horrible before they lowered the field. We also spent time running around the wide open spaces of the upper end zone as there were only about 65k people there.
I wondered a bit about our new coach Bo after getting creamed.
At the time I was also a Packers fan and Dan Devine went on to coach the Packers.

I have a home in the Detroit suburbs. Comcast triple play, extra phone line (2 total), 3 HD boxes one digital box = $160 no HBO but BTN and the other basic stuff. Have to call and bitch periodically to knock down the price.
Cottage in northern Michigan - No cable, no reliable cell service (even with an external Wilson sntenna), no AT&T or Verizon offerings. Have internet with Mispot, a rural 4G internet provider (not many choices around here) $45 for 10gig of data. Also there is n the M22 Project in my area Wifi that is bigger $'s but unlimited data. For TV have Dish HD 200 channels does not include BTN but I can have it turned on for a day at a time for a couple of bucks - $55 for 1 HD TV. No cell service otherwise I would use my work provided 4G phone for data
Dish customer service has been great and they allow downgrading their service to about $5 a month if you don't want it for awhile. Not sure how Dish would be for multiple TVs.
I hate Comcast with a passion. We are considering a Slingbox for my son in A2 to cut his Comcast bill to just internt.
Anyone here have experience with a Slingbox for football games?

I had a great deal of success by going to the local window/door company (Lee Wholesale) and using their installers. This type of company usually sells many brands of windows so they can give you the pros and cons of each. Wallside will sell you Wallside no matter what. Lee Wholesale was in New Hudson (near Novi, MI) but they have been acquired by ABC Supply - http://www.abcsupply.com/ and I don't know much about them. You might also want to check with Fingerle Lumber if you are in A2 and they sell windows and my have suggested installers. Overall check out a local independent window company before making a decision.

Band day has been credited to Canham. From DB's blog "Canham ... Band Day was just one of his ingenious ideas. He brought high school musicians -- and their parents, of course -- into Michigan Stadium to help create a special day of entertainment and Wolverine football." But I stand corrected as Wikipedia has it starting in the late 1940's.
I do think in season performance affects sales, but not season ticket sales for sure. You don't think winning brings more fans into the stadium that season? Or that losing causes no shows?
"wiped out by Don Canham to make way for the almighty dollar." Band Day was created to fill emply seats, once there were no longer 20,000 free seats for crappy games, it went away.
I do agree there is an attendance lag effect for on field performance both good and bad, but that can be exacerbated by price actions.

Bo Schembechler the coach could've and probably would've struggled in this era that we're in. Not just on the field, but all the off-field shit too. Maybe not, but to compare him to someone from today is kinda silly."
So things change. I guess JFK and Lincoln would suck as Presidents today. I believe people who perfomed well in the past have the capability to adjust and perform well today. I agree that comparing atheletes from different eras does not work perfectly, but administrators and coaches? I think in general top people would do well regardless of era. I think you could drop Canham and Schembechler in today and they would do just fine.

I have been going to games since 1969. When Canham took over he had something called band day to fill what was otherwise a half empty stadium for games against Northwestern. I used to buy walk up student tickets (K1-12) for $2. Typically sellouts were only a couple of games a year. He took that and with Schembechler building the product on the field, turned it into years of sellouts and a waiting list.

My daughter (appllied fall of '13) had about a 3.7 with I think a 29 ACT with similar classes and was a competitve dance team and did not make it into Engineering.
I think the Hight School you come from makes a big difference. I mentioned a hook earlier. You need to find something thast makes you stand out and make that part of your application and essay. Being from TN alone might help.

As Don mentions there was no booby prize in those years.

I agree. I was born and raised in Ann Arbor and graduated from M in '80 and had many Sparty friends. I went to a few games with Sparties in the 80's and it was a civilized rivalry. I sense a darkness creeping into the rivalry that did not used to be there. It may be that MSU winning has simply emboldened Sparty fans.
In looking back I don't remember hating MSU coaches like Perless or Saban or OSU coaches like Tressel or Cooper but think Dantonio is a dick at the level of Woody Hayes. I know my dislike for MSU has really ramped up since he became coach. I think he condones and encourages dirty play. I have no problem with Izzo even when he was regularly destroying us.
It's interesting people choosing MSU as a backup to Michigan. I applied to 3 schools, Michigan, MSU and Western. I remember getting my MSU acceptance letter "You are a Spartan!" and feeling dirty. I've raised both my kids as Michigan fans and neither would even apply to MSU even though I encouraged them to do so (the damage had already been done by then). I think journalism and other degrees hospitality, landscape architecture, etc make a case for attending MSU, but I would have chosen a lesser school rather than attend MSU. I know that is not logical.

Two things about your story ring true:
1. Michigan has a large contingent of arrogate asses (to quote famous MSU coach Daryl Rodgers). It's only after getting into the working world that it get's tempered.
2. Many MSU grads are insecure about their school (not attributing this to the author of this thread). It's a good school with lots to offer but many grads will bristly at anything they see as a slight to their institution. The institution "chip on the shoulder" is massive.
Both of these are rank generalizations but I think those two issues will always have you caught in crossfire.
I'm glad you are on our side and am proud to have you a member of the Wolverine Nation.

Neither of mine would even apply to MSU. One is at Grand Valley and one at Michigan, both were very good students but Michigan is a bitch to get into now. There are plenty of other alternatives to MSU as a second choice if not Michigan. My wife was not happy that my kids would not consider MSU. I would have been fine if they attended MSU but the brainwashing was too intense for them to consider it.

Remember this when it was the Rose Bowl or nothing, there were no other bowl alternatives for Big Tem teams.

I know. I thought that was how it would work. I think if they used first come first served GA seating the student section would look much more filled that it is now. I know many students are pissed by arriving early and being forced into poor seats. For those few hundred that want to be sit in the first 5 rows that is great but it sucks for everyone else.
Think if every section of the stadium was forced into filling every seat, the top rows for games like Minnesota would be empty but it's masked by having empty seats through the section.
The way they are seating the students now makes any no shows obvious.
|1 year 33 weeks ago||This is exactly right. There||
This is exactly right. There is no GA seating as you are assigned a seat (given a specific ticket with a seat and row number) at entry to the stadium. My son has gotten crappy seats by showing up to early. For crappy games the new policy actually encourages late arrival so you can get seats higher up! General admission seating (first come first serve) would be much better as you could choose your seat.
|1 year 33 weeks ago||The students are being forced to sit in lower rows by design||
There is no attraction to the lower rows, the students are being forced there. See my 5 other posts in this thread on why that is.
|1 year 33 weeks ago||GA is causing empty seats||
GA is causing empty seats by not actually being GA. You are assigned a seat at admission to the stadium and the ushers are forcing students to take assigned seats. Have you seen the army of ushers in the student section? Arrive early and get crammed in a low row. Arrive late and sit where you want.
|1 year 33 weeks ago||The students can't spread out||
btw the students can't spread out as they are given a specific seat at entry and the ushers are enforcing that seat. That is why everyone is crammed in lower until the game starts.
|1 year 33 weeks ago||THERE IS NO GA!||
There is no GA seating as you are assigned a seat at entry to the stadium (the ushers hand you a ticket). Get there early and end up in row 10.
You actually get crappy seats by showing up too early. For crappy games the new policy actually encourages late arrival so you can get seats higher up! Genetal admission seating (first come first serve) would be much better as you could choose your seat. This would alievate the blank spots and would force late arrivals to have to find a seat.
As it is now arrive early, get crammed in with other students in low rows as the ushers are enforcing you sitting in the seat on your ticket, or arrive late and get a seat row 50 or higher.
It's the implementation of GA that sucks.

There was a $75 fee (can't remember if it was per ticket) for end zone seats. I asked for a tickup upgreade and got moved one whole section for $300 additional. Seems like I spent nearly a grand for 2 tickets in section 41 by the time all fees were paid.
I'm no economics major but I think DB is discovering that he is hitting the high end of what people will pay.
