Most of my regrets are things I never tried, not things I did and failed.
I once hired a CPA to be a consultant. He spent the first few years out of high school as a musician. He finally decided that making a living mattered as he was tired of being a starving artist. It was cool to see our CPA consultant headed to a client engagement with a rollerbag and guitar case.

I disagree, changing jobs can improve your domestic life. I had a sales job with extreme pressure (much of it self applied). I'd come home and be physically sick. I know when the job is going well I'm happier and life is better.
I started a side business on eBay just for fun, did not really need the money but like the challenge. I'd see if you can find something that is better or try something on the side that is fun and fulfilling. hard to do with time pressure I know.
I also find making things with my hands helps with a sense of accomplishment when my job is mostly words and paper. So I do a lot of DIY projects furniture and such for a visible sense of accomplishment.

I am an old fat bastard and have worked for several companies. The advice I give is to choose the company based upon it's culture. Your job will change, your boss will change, but it the company and it's underlying culture is often a constant. Is this a great place to work? The last time I made a decision I choose culture over money/position and am thrilled 15 years later with that decision.
It's not the same decision my 20/30 year old self would have made.

Once you get to corporate/non profit accounting and out of the CPA/Consulting gig accounting your life will be enjoyable. My wife has a masters in finance and skipped the whole CPA thing and it seemed to be a much better path in terms of fun. You might want to consider working for a non-profit or something else that might feed your altruistic side.

I had to take Calc 112 to get into undergrad B-school in the 80's. Remember walking out of the midterm knowing I had failed horribly. Went to get my test results and the Prof says he can't find my test. Since it somehow got lost he let me retake a different but similar test. Since I basically knew what was going to be on the test I was well prepared and aced the test.
Passed the class and got into what became Ross. Someone was looking out for me because if I fail that test I doubt I get into B-school and it sets off a whole bunch of domino's.
|6 days 4 hours ago||Getting fired/laid off||
Got wacked from my a few days before Christmas as an middle manager for a large name company. Had a two month old at home. Spent a six months looking for that right job, got it then was fired 3 months later - long story.
Anyway out of desperation jumped back into sales - I had been in management and consulting for 6 years - and then tripled my income in the first year. Got recognition trips to Africa, Bali, Hawaii and elsewhere.
Don't love sales/sales management as a career but it's something I am good at. My wife was able to spend time with the kids and I have a pretty secure financial situation after nearly 20 years in high tech sales.
It's funny everytime I have been laid off or fired it seems like the worst thing ever at that moment in time - but each time it has led to something better.

|1 week 2 hours ago||Small job||
I had a Lotus Eclat, quirky looking, with a vacuum headlight system. So when all is well your headlights are held in place by vacuum from the engine. When you pull the headlight switch it opens the vacuum and the lights pop up and turn on. The lights are designed to fail in the up position so they are spring loaded. I bought the car with the system not working. The lights would stay down when the car was running but when you stopped they popped up. Also if you really got on the gas you could get the headlights to start to rise - just like old cars with vacuum driver wipers - get on the gas and your wipers stop.
Anyway I did not have a vacuum tester so I started replacing parts. One headlight retractor (a canister with a rubber diaphragm inside) was rusted and leaking - after a new one arrived from the UK I thought it was fixed, but after 15 minutes parked the car would slowly blink, one headlight then the other would rise out of the hood. Could not find the leak going through each segment of hose looking for leaks until I bought a cheap vacuum tester and found the switch had a slight leak. New switch from the UK and finally fixed. Much frustration for a small problem.
Not the prettiest Lotus to start with but really stupid looking with the lights up.

Summer is great on the lake as I have a work from home job. I could live here 6-9 months a year easy. But for a year round location I would choose A2 because of the variety of stuff to do. Outside TC and maybe Petoskey not much happens Up North in the winter.
But the Ann Arbor property taxes are the killer besides the cost of housing.
Hoping to retire with my place in the north and Ann Arbor if I can swing the cost.

Beating Ann Arbor traffic is often based upon your knowledge of side streets. I was raised in A2 and my father had a business that delivered to residents. I filled in from time to time as a driver and got to know the city pretty well, but my Dad who had lived there 70 years knew every street.
I am in and out of Ann Arbor on football Saturday quickly. The key? Do not use Main, Stadium or the expressways. Now with 23 construction even the side streets will be jammed.
I communted to downdown Ann Arbor - near City Hall for a couple of years and also the Domino's complex north of town. Heck of alot easier getting in and out of Ann Arbor than Birmingham, Southfield or Troy - where every surface street is backed up.

Are you married? Have you run this by your wife? I too bought my own first piece of crap car and it was a good learning lesson. But I did a whole bunch of stuff as a kid, much of it dangerous, that I would prefer my kids not do. I opted for relative safety over the lessons learned driving stuff - like how you can push start a manual car.
My wife also had a pretty srong opinion on safe cars.
|4 weeks 2 hours ago||Yes||
Yes, not only fat but also old. My first vehicle was a '66 Chevy pickup, a death trap by today's standards. But I have seen a lot of newer crap on the roads that I would not let my kids drive.
|4 weeks 3 hours ago||Uh, maybe||
I know as a parent I did not want my kids driving the crap I did. I wanted ABS, airbags and something that would not rollover. If you are cool with your kids driving a crappy '72 Pinto then something is wrong with you, or you live in a town where the max speed limit is 25. btw your wife will undoubtly want something extremely safe for her babies.
|4 weeks 3 hours ago||Ok, another vote for Pontiac||
I got my kids a used 2008 Pontiac G6 in 2011 for $8900. Looks better than the Gran Prix and is comfortable and gets good gas mileage. Driven it for 40k miles with limited issues and it gets good safety grades. ABS, airbags galore. Relatively sporty for a kids car with good safety ratings.
Here is a 2005 one 44k miles for $4k.
Or here is a 2009 with 65k miles for $5k
If safety is not a huge issue - Mini's are pretty safe. Would be cool for a teenager (I sold mine to one). The base model is not that fast and gets pretty good mileage. Not big enough for your kids to use to fool around.
How about a used 2004 Mini for $5k with 32k miles?
Or even better
Used 2000 Mercedes-Benz SLK230 Mileage: 88,869
Ok this would make your son or daughter popular. It's a MB so pretty safe. Probably crappy in the snow, but think of the popularity - probably second to the Porsche mentioned at the top.

What is so painful is that Ed Martin gave/loaned money to players from Detroit. He paid players that went to several Big Ten schools - I believe Iowa, Minn and maybe Ill. But because he was considered a booster at Michigan - that was the issue. Also Michigan choose to admit guilt and to not defend themselves. He was not "go to Michigan and I will pay you" he loaned/gave money to many Detroit/Michigan area players. He also paid players that went outside of the B1G including Syracuse. But none of these schools admitted any wrong doing so no penalties.
Was Michigan culpable, absolutely. Did they deserve some punishment, sure. Was Ed Martin directing players to Michigan, no. Did other schools deserve punishment from the Ed Martin scandal, yes.

A group of sales people worked in a several story building. While one guy is in the bathroom they take his car keys and move his car in the parking lot. They then have someone call him posing as the assistant to a key executive he has been dying to meet saying that the executive is free to meet him in 30 minutes.
The sales person grabs his keys and heads down to the parking lot. Everyone lines the windows of the office watching him frantically try to find his car in the parking lot. After a few minutes he rushes back up to the office to borrow someones car when he gets welcomed by the whole office.
The second is a small one. We would take the cord from a corded phone handset and put a bit of clear tape on the end to prevent the headset from working. Then we would call the phone often from the next cubical and would hear "hello, hello?". Then the phone would slam down. Repeat often.

I'm not sure in this day an age who would want to play for a coach like Izzo screaming in your face all of the time. He is a good coach and his players obviously don't leave in droves, but if you had a choice - why play for a screaming control freak?. Great coach but I don't get it.
I know Belien is not loved by many around here but I much prefer his style if not always his results.

|17 weeks 5 days ago||Depends upon the IB program||
Depends upon the IB program. Not all are the same, IA West in suburban Detroit give little lift and will depress grade points. Can't speak for others. I do know they greatly oversold the upside and left out the negatives - significant more work, lower grades, difficulty with sports schedules.
|17 weeks 5 days ago||Our IB experience||
My son attended IA West in Michigan a few years ago. He has since graduated from Michigan and has been accepted to grad school at U of M. His IB school actually hurt his him as he did not get initially accepted to Michigan. IB is a challenging program and will depress your grade point. Unless it is a highly regarded established IB school the grade deflation will hurt your daughter's chances at many universities. I think my son had an ACT of 32 and a GPA slightly under a 3.7 and did not get into LS&A initially.
I believe without his IA grades he would have been accepted right out of High School. IA West made many promises but in following my friends children I don't think IA West will aid your daughter if she wants to get into Michigan. I have heard exactly the opposite about the original IA in West Bloomfield.
I did not recommend IA West to my daughter and would not recommend IA West due to the face grade deflation and programs rigor was not adequately recognized many universities including Michigan. Things may have changed since this was in the early phase of the school. Most of the people accepted into Michigan from my Son's school were from the non IB campus. He did get into Case Western and Illinois so you mileage may vary.
My son also played football and basketball and both were a pain since the IB schedule was different.

I'd rather have an offensive foul or missed dunk rather than soft layups that get sent back in their face.

Since when do you lose a year of elgibility when transfering? That is not true and has nothing to do with redshirting. A transfer sits out one year and preserves their remaining eligibility.
|18 weeks 3 days ago||My wish - nail Donnal to the bench until||
My wish - nail Donnal to the bench until he develops some fire. He has some talent but plays with no passion. He gets his weak layups blocked as opposed to Wagner getting a questionable offensive foul going hard to the basket. Even sweaty Doyle with his lack of ups goes hard to the rim (and misses some dunks).
If Donnel had no skill it would be one thing but he has a complete lack if fire. I don't know if he is too nice, is simply a finesse player, has no desire for contact, or ?? but I think we win if he plays fewer minutes last night.
I'm frustrated by Irvin but never question his effort or passion. Not sure why Wagner did not get more time this year, especially yesterday even with the foul trouble.
|18 weeks 5 days ago||Agreed||
Donnal was poor tonight, missed a box out on a free throw and generally did not look competitive for much of the game. He has some ability but for whatever reason seems to lack a competitive fire. I thought he was coming around but seems to have regressed again.

Lets fire out crappy football coach, we can do better - aka Glen Mason
Let's fire our crappy basketball coach, we can do better - aka Tubby Smith
Maybe we can get that hotshot coach Tommy Amaker!
I think Belien has to do better, but he is a proven winner and comparisons to Hoke are a joke. We can do worse. Let's see what the next couple of years bring. If we get more of the same then maybe...
I remember Lloyd Carr being on the hot seat for losing 4 games his fiirst two years. Bo was reamed for not being able to win a bowl game. We're actually sounding worse than Minnesota, some on the board are approaching OSU like fervor.
What hot shot coach in the Big Ten would you trade for outside of Izzo? Fran or the asshole in Indiana? The guy at Ill? How about Richard at Minn? I've heard the coach at MD is weak. It's not Belien vs perfection is about Belien vs the alternatives.
If there was an obvious Harbaugh for BB then I would be all in, but what if all we can get is the Hoke version of a BB coach?

Yes, better than me. Both my kids got into Case Western ($50k+). My daughter got into Case for Engineering but not U of M. My Son got into Illinois ($50k out of state) but not U of M - and I'm a second generation alumni - my son transferred into Michigan as a sophomore graduated in 2015 and was just excepted into Michigan's SNRE Grad school. Am I a little bit bitter, yes, yes I am. Being an alumni does not mean crap as far as I can tell when it comes to admissions. I won't go into a long political rant here.
There was no way I was paying $50k a year when there are good in-state, private and out of state colleges for $25k a year.

|21 weeks 1 hour ago||For a minute I thought this - Chevy Nova||
|21 weeks 1 hour ago||Similar, with different outcome||
My 19 year old nephew was driving his mom's Jeep Cherokee between Frankfort and Crystal Lake. It was snowing and he was driving a bit too fast - it's easier to get your own kid to slow down than a nephew - we come over the crest of a hill and on the other side there is a pickup with a trailer jack knifed in the middle of the snowy road.
He swerved, over corrected and proceeded to roll the car into a ditch in the National Forest. Thankfully we did not blast a tree head-on or nail the stuck truck. We walked away fine but the car was totaled. Cop gave us a ride to the Homestead resort where we had to call a car service in TC to come to Glen Arbor and get us to the TC airport to get a rental to get back to Detroit. No cabs in that part of Michigan.
Interesting fact was that the tow company said they cannot use power saws in a national forest so thankfully they could get the car anyway, but I guess if it is totaled who cares?
|21 weeks 6 hours ago||A few||
Fastest - 1985 Audi GT on 696 between Southfield and Novi - 120mph - and yes I did get pulled over. But by the time the cop could catch up and track me (he was not using radar) I was going 70 in what I think was a speed limit of 55 at the time, I was able to talk the judge down to 5 over.
Fast - My parents 1970's Old Toronado with a 455 CI V8 - about 1974. I know I was doing 110 on old US 23 between Higgins Lake and Houghten Lake.
Most rubber burned - tied between the Toronado above (lighting up the front tires) and my 1974 Firebird Formula 400. 400 CI V8 that averaged about 8 miles to the gallon.

|22 weeks 4 hours ago||On safety patrol||
As a kid on safety patrol I had to dodge a wheel that broke off a car and came towards me. All in front of Bob Ufers house! Nothing like cars in the 60's and 70's.
In high school a few friends and I helped a lady and her kids in a VW bug with a flat. The body had a square peg where you put the jack at the bottom of the bug. Started jacking the car up and the jack was moving up through the rusted body but the car was still on the ground. Had to use a different jack on a solid part of the car.

I've found Ann Arbor to be the worst for both parking and traffic enforcement. Many more tickets there in 6 years of driving than the next 35 years elsewhere.

Was that the Dart where you had to turn the wheel about a dozen times to go around the corner? I don't know if it was designed that way to make steering easier without power steering but I remember lots of steering in that car.
|22 weeks 6 hours ago||Similar||
Similar story. I had someone driving the opposite way flick a cigarette butt out their window and came through my window and landed between my back and my seat. We were both driving about 30 mph so the odds of that had to be tiny. Thankfully it only burned my shirt and seat slightly - I had on my softball jersey made out of something that melted. Glad it missed my face. Thank god there are fewer assholes throwing butts out of their cars these days.
|22 weeks 6 hours ago||I had||
I had broken off shovel handles in the gun rack in my truck to help deter road ragers. I guess an actual gun would have been better - or maybe worse. Those shovel handles are wicked, lighter and longer than a baseball bat. I did have someone approach me and I put my hand around the handle and they walked back to their car.
|22 weeks 6 hours ago||Work stories||
In high school and college I worked construction with less than ideal equipment. Just some highlights:
I had the trailer hitch sheer off the truck and dump the trailer while I was hauling a loader in front of the Gandy Dancer. The same truck did not have a gas gauge so you had to pound on the gas tank to get a sense of how much gas was left. I was stranded a couple of times.
Once had to change a tire in the Ann Arbor landfill in about a foot of garbage/mud ooze.
The dump bed was so weak you and a partner had to lay on your back and give the dump bed a start with your feet.
Had a brake line burst and had to drive for a couple of miles without brakes - but with a standard shift truck going slow is was okay.
One truck had the lower door hinges rusted away so the doors were bolted shut - you had to "Dukes of Hazzard" your way into and out of the truck.

Even Northwestern is at 104. Seems like the CBS guy did not bother to do his homework.
|23 weeks 1 day ago||Wow||
Not sure where you went to High School, but it was sure different than mine. I went to a large public school - Ann Arbor Huron - which for the base classes were essentially warehousing 10% of the student population who had no desire to be there. In American History I had a kid seriously ask "how could a shot be heard all around the world?"
Now the top end classes were very tough with all of the professors kids raising the bar - getting into Michigan was for the dumb kids like me - they were going to Harvard, MIT, etc.
I can't say I go much out of High School except for one class - Humanities which covered Art, Music, Philosophy and History - one of the most challenging classes I had in high school or college.
|23 weeks 1 day ago||Don - good point||
Don - good point. However when I was at Ann Arbor Huron much of the class day was wasted by fuckups who were only taking up space until the day ended - except AP classes and Humanities. No politics - but there was a real reluctance to discipline or jettison problem students in my day. As a senior I had half days since I already had enough credits to graduate. If I actually had 4 hours of challenging classes a day that would have been more than I got in my 7 hours of school time.
Not defending the model, just saying duration is not a good measure of quality when it comes to public schools. Can't speak for private schools.

I wish I had had enough money at the time for a 911 but I had been working construction for years and had saved up $2500 by the end of freshman year and a 911 even used in the 70's was well beyond that. $2500 got me the 914, but even them I had to pour more money into it to keep it on the road.
