LinkedIn is good for both job listings and better yet networking. The best luck I have had is to identify the companies I wanted to work for and approach them directly either through HR or someone on LinkedIn. They sometimes do not have open positions but will often talk to you, especially if you have made a decent case for why you think you would be a good fit for their company. It shows some initiative because you have already done some homework on them.
I'm not an engineer but I think that apprach would still work.

Another Softball (i.e. limited athletic ability) story. I played against Dave Gallagher a former All-American defensive tackle who played for Michigan 1971–1973 and in the Bears 1974-1979.
I was playing 3rd base and played as deep as I could without totally embarrasing myself (couple of feet into the outfield grass). I made a diving catch of a line drive off his bat. Sheer luck I am sure.
The neat thing about playing softball in Ann Arbor in the summers is you would be playing against Michigan athletes from all sports (a fair amount of hockey players).
I remember playing agains a track and field guy (shot put I think). He hit the ball so hard it was oblonged. I've never seen anyone deform a softball before.

Getting into colleges like Michigan and Harvard is a bitch these days. Michigan had 46,000+ applications for 4,000 spots. I'm sure Harvard is much more difficult. My kids are smart but don't go to a private High School that is a feeder to top colleges. Much like football recruiting, you just never know what is going to happen.
I think from a name perspective Harvard is superior. It's interesting to see all of the angst on site like college confidential about schools and ratings. For christ sake some components of life should not simply be about achievement. I'd advise my 12 year old daughter to give some thought about what is important to her and talk about life balance. Some people thrive on the challenge of being the best and some are consumed by it.

My daughter is headed off to college but attended every home football game with me last year. She was waitlisted at Michigan and is planning to attend GVSU (I really liked our visit to Hope). My son will be a junior at Michigan next year. Neither of my kids would even apply to MSU which did not make my wife happy (M grad but thought MSU should be in the picture).
My daughter is not a big enough fan to read MGoBlog but my son is a huge U of M fan and has been for years.
BTW for anyone expecting your status as an alumni to help with your children's admission, you will be disappointed. I'm second generation alumni, my wife is an alumni, my son is a current student and my daughter is in the middle 50% on grades and scores for people accepted to U of M, but still no dice. As far as I can tell alumni status makes zero difference. Not even a tiny bit.

A&M ran 273 pound fullback George Woodard into the center of the line 39 times.

Three missed field against OSU in the last minutes of the 1973 and 1974 were the worst.
In the 1973 Michigan–Ohio State game, we missed two fourth-quarter field goal attempts. With the game tied 10–10 we missed a 58-yard field goal. Got another shot with 24 seconds left to play but missed. Both teams finished the 1973 season with identical 10–0–1 records, and the Big Ten Conference athletic directors voted to send Ohio State to the 1974 Rose Bowl. Because Big Ten rules at that time allowed only one team to play in a post-season bowl game, Michigan did not play in a bowl game despite having an undefeated season.
In 1974 Ohio State led 12–10 nearing the end of the fourth quarter and we missed a 33 yard field goal to win that game.
I was at the Iowa, Syracuse, Oregon, the horror and many others but these two were the worst.

|1 year 15 weeks ago||I call bullshit||
I call bullshit. Michigan is great at taking but not so good at giving. You will find out when your kid is trying to get accepted (btw mine did) and the University treats you like crap regardless of past donations. They like to pretend to be a private school when asking for donations but then have amnesia when it comes time for them to give back.
The same for tickets. I understand the need for revenue and don't have a problem with PSD's but at least give some credit to the season ticket holders who have shown the loyalty for the crappy BB product they have fielded for more than a decade. "Thanks for the loyalty, where is your $7,500?"
|1 year 15 weeks ago||This already happened once||
My Dad had 4 near center court tickets about row 8 or 10 (the last row of the temporary seats) since Crisler opened in 1969. Several years ago they reconfigured seats to bring students to the sidelines and he lost those seats because he did not pay the required fee. They did allow him to keep 2 seats nearby without a fee as I remember and got 2 got moved into the upper bowl about 1/2 way up on the sidelines.
They have touble selling tickets to many of the games today so hopefully Brandon will tread lightly. I do see guys like Al Glick (the guy who donated for the football practice facility) on the sidelines that will pay whatever is needed but don't think there are a ton of wealthy die hard M BB fans. The diehard BB fans I see are old and remember the glory years of the 70's and 80's so I'm not sure how this will play out.
I don't have season tickets because the driver from suburbia is a pain in the add during the week in the Winter so I just buy on the secondary market for peanuts for the cheap games. They have to market the hell out of the games to even sell them out, not sure how successful PSD's will be.

"revoke student ticket privileges for people who don't bother to show up"
I think this would be great. I have less of a problem with late, but when there are ton's of empty seats in the student section for Nebraska then something is wrong. If you are too busy or stressed to attend the games then don't buy tickets, or do a ticket share with a fellow student and split the games.
I went as a Freshman but attended less the next three years (I was working) so I get it. I just don't understand buying tickets and not showing up.

You can still get Dune Rides but you have to head south of TC a ways.
As I understand it this dune was a result of cutting all of the trees a long time ago and there is no additional ecological damage done by these rides (like there would uprooting dune grass, etc @ Sleeping Bear).

Bowl tickets should be a charitable donation. I paid face for tickest from mgoblue that will have about 1/10th of the value I paid by kickoff. I don't have a problem buying tickets from Michigan because I see it as a donation to the University but would love the writeoff (ehich is not happening)
I'm looking on the seconary market to upgrade my tickets at a fraction of the cost of what I have paid. Since I'm going anyway I'd like decent seats!

When applying for colleges my son refused to consider MSU or OSU and tore up all their mailings sent to him. I would have had no problem with MSU, but would have had a difficult time sending checks to Ohio.
He did not get into M on the first go around (yes from Illinois, Case Western and Marquette) and is trying to transfer to M.
It did not matter to me where he went, but I did create the fandom that killed any interest in MSU

I liked Bacon and Shand. They still don't have the afternoon sorted out yet.
I remember them as WPAG - founded by two brothers, Paul and George hence PAG before moving to WTKA.

I feel exactly the same way. I was a Carr supporter when he was getting criticism but I can't support him now. Even if he did not love Rich he owed his ex-players and the University to strongly publically support RR, for everyones sake. He comes off as petty and unable to rise above it. I'm older and sometimes you have to do shit you don't like because it's the right thing to do. WTF happened to Carr's moral compass?

Here is for hoping Hoke wins, gains some power and Brandon runs for some political office once Crisler is finished.

I liked the injury reporting so I was not at the game guessing why guys were not playing. I understand Hoke's position but it's kind of a pain as a fan to not know what is going on. I was trying to figure out why Desmond Morgan was playing at first.
|1 year 39 weeks ago||Completely agree||
I thought there were a few calls that were ballsy and unconventional. The one where Denard threw an interception near Gallon on the sideline. The conservative play would have been to push for field goal position as they were only down 3 at the time. As you mentioned earlier the defense was balls to the wall on many ocassions.
I can live with MANBALL if we go for it on occasion. The telling point will be when we are ahead by two touchdowns, how do we play then?

Desmond Morgan tipped his blitz every time and ND changed the call to run in the middle that was vacated. I don't know crap about football and that was obvious. I could see it occuring once or twice but it happened several times. I think Brian has good insight and I guess we will see how much better we get at running this defense. I do prefer it to the old Michigan bend but don't break defensive philosophy. But then again I prefer the spread.

I grew up in Ann Arbor went to school there and have two siblings there but would not recommend it unless you are left leaning. If you are a conservative or even in the middle some of the policies in the school district will make you crazy. Very cool place before kids and after kids but I would not want my kids to put up with the stuff I had to in the 1960's and 1970's.
I live in Milford (which is a cool little town) and commuted to Southfield. The Huron Valley Schools are pretty good (not Birmingham or Bloomfield good) and housing is very affordable. You are away from the malls but not far from Novi if you need to go there. Downtown Milford is small but cool. I like South Lyon as well.
I've lived in Farmington Hills, worked in Southfield, Troy, Novi, Livonia, Ann Arbor, Oak Park and I like the less suburban areas like Milford and South Lyon. I'm not too far from Ann Arbor and you can avoid highways by taking Pontiac Trail which is a nice drive to A2

|2 years 11 weeks ago||My son is a senior||
My son is a senior as well. He is still waiting to hear from Michigan and Case Western. But is in at Univ of Ill. Since he does not know what he wants to do and will enter in LS&A someplace. I'm not opting for the $50k a year out of state school. He will have a couple of private school options at about the same price as Michigan is instate. Michigan for him is choice 1, 2 and 3 with everything else 4. Unless your son is dying to be a Wolverine, or Michigan offers something he can't get at is other choices I'd save the money or let him pay the difference.
My dad paid for my college with this caveat "you are going to an instate public university unless they don't offer something you want to study". I ended up at Michigan in Bschool which turned out great.
If we were out of state I'd be probably paying for Michigan because that is the only school he wants to attend. Be careful how much brainwashing you do to your kids or you will end up like me.
|2 years 12 weeks ago||I agree||
My son has applied and has virtually all honors and AP classes. His grade point is .3-.4 lower than a kid in his school with the same ACT and no alumni parents. Kid with the higher gradepoint without honors or AP classes was accepted to Engineering while my son has been deferred (applied early October - I don't think applying early helps anymore). With the increase in applications due to the move to the Common App I think they don't look as closely at the actual classes taken.
This year is a bitch to get in, I think it will be better in just a few years. However I think they are really pushing for out of state students to get more $$'s as the state cuts aid to the U.
First get good grades (in the hardest classes you can get A's in), score high on the standardized test, show leadership/sports/etc. Don't sacrifice grade point to max out on AP classes unless you can do well in them.

I get the feeling he is trying to set everyone up for a lukewarm season. "Only installed part of the offense/defense players are not that good, depth is a problem". I did not sign up for another 3 year transition. They better get it done and done fast. I don't get the "we must throw everything out and start over". Haven't football coaches ever heard of a transition? I can agree to throwing our the entire defense, buy why change absolutely everything right away on offense?
|2 years 13 weeks ago||I usually don't bitch..||
I usually don't bitch because bad refs go both ways. But I thought with the style of defense Duke played they had an officiating advantage. The hands checks and arm bars were never called. I wish they has called a closer game and I think we got more than our fair share of ticky tack fouls.
Loved the effort just would have liked to see a more evenly officiated game. I was not impressed by anything Duke did, but they do have some great athletes and a really deep team.

1974 Firebird Formula 400 - 8 mpg but you could really smoke the tires
1976 Lotus Eclat - quirky looking, fun to drive not that reliable
1985 Audi GT - loved the car and it was bulletproof
1995 Audi ?? - Can remember the model it was after they changed the names. Nice car.
My recent middle age extra car is a Mini Cooper S. Ride is a bit harsh but it goes like hell and is fun to drive. Reliable. As I get older my patience for being broken down by the side of the road is less, so I like newer stuff that is reasonably economical.
I liked the Ferrari 308 suggestion and would also suggest a Jag XJS
