Not a fan. I have been a member and contacted them for what I thought would they would have - and valuable to me - information on how to improve the chances of acceptance into Michigan. My employer provides a college coaching service but I found the Alumi Association and the local chapters provide no guidance at all. For those of you who have children who would like to attend Michigan, expect zero helpful information, guidance, or suggestions from the Alumni Association and local chapters. I understand that they have no say in admissions decisions, but a college coaching service for Alumni would be extremely valuable especially with the difficulty in gaining admission since the common app was implemented..
btw one of my two shildren attended and graduated from U of M Ann Arbor.

It's idiotic posts like these that make me wish we could buy negative votes just so I don't have to see assholes like you post. Many people were saying we would be 6-6 this year. New system, new coaches, new quarterback, wtf did you think? That Harbaugh was going to poop gold?
Bo got his ass handed to him by Missouri his first year (yes and then kicked OSU's ass) so stuff happens. One data point does not make a legacy.

I was at that 10-10 banner game. At 15 I was ready to charge the field and bust some buckeyes, but I was with my mom :-) I can't imaging being any more worked up than I was at that point in time.
We were under the impression that a tie would get us to the Rose Bowl since that seemed to be the standard as I belive OSU had gone the year before. But we were screwed by a vote of Big 10 Athletic directors. Bo went off on that.

My stepmom has my dad's tickets since my dad died 15 years or so ago. There are the seats I sat in as a kid and heard my parents talk about seing Roger Staubach play Michigan in the Big House so I think they got them in the early 60's. Not sure if she is interested in transferring but the cost would be:
$600 per seat transfer fee
$400 more per seat PSD per year than what I pay now
Just not sure the $2k in year 1 and $800 more per year is worth it. Great seats at about the 45 at about row 50 but I am closing in on retirement and am not sure I want to take on that load. I'm not sure my son would be able to afford them for several years.
I'm thinking of just keeping my Section 42 and forgoing Section 1. I guess I am just a cheap Fat Bastard.

If the fucking Big Ten can bring in crap like Rutgers the least they can do is hire full time officials. Schools can pay coaches millions but not get competent officials? I think they would need about 50 officials. Say we pay them $150k each including all benefits that would be $7.5 million for the whole league.
I think the TV contract alone is $500 million. I's say spending 1.5% of the TV revenue would be a good investment.

The only true pieces of trash was my early 80's AMC and my Datsun Pickup.

But sometimes dealers in Detroit will do crazy deals, especially with employee discounts. I had a new Dodge Dakota pickup one year lease for $1200. It was 15 years ago but it was still probably a $15-$20k truck. They did something similar with Jeeps.
I currently have a $42k sticker Silverado two year lease including all taxes and fees for a one time payment of $6k. It makes no sense for a student but not that bad for a two year rental.

I bought a Pontiac G6 for my kids when they were in High School using a broker who served as my agent at an Auto Auction in Flint. I went on the lot with them and picked out a bunch of cars I would buy at the agreed price. They added a couple hundred on top of the auction price as their fee
In this case I got a 1-2 year old Pontiac G6 with about 40k miles for less than $9k and still have the car 6 years later.
You can look at the cars here www.flintaa.com but need to be a dealer to buy, that is why I needed a broker.
I was able to get CarFax's on the cars I looked at. Many were former rental cars which can be good (serviced) and bad (rough use).
If you want I can email you my brokers name. She did it part time on the side so I am not sure if she still does this so I am reluctant to post her email here.
You can look at the pipeline of cars here https://www.edgepipeline.com you can signup without being a dealer. If any of you had a dealer buddy looking at cars here can be fun.
Probably more risk than some other avenues but you may be able to get a deal. But it takes time and is a hassle compared to Craigslist or visiting a dealership.

Used to be on the corner of State and Washington across from North Quad, which to old timers was the Frieze building and to really old timers Ann Arbor High and the Public Library. At that time it was pretty different as there was not a Coney Island on every corner.

The old farts out there will remember Huron Valley Bank (founded by some small Ann Arbor businessmen and later sold to Comerica). They once had a signing day with Willie Horton, Denny McLain (as usual he was a dick) and I think Freehan and maybe Northrup. Have no idea where those pictures or autographs are today but it was a big day in A2.

Michigan's star player Ricky Green was limping around and ineffective but Michigan still won.

Try doggy day care if you have a good one and can afford it. We took our puppy to doggy day care frequently. She loved it, came home, ate and then passed out. Maybe a couple of days a week?
We did the puppy route but my wife and kids were home to take care of her. Still going at 15 years old - Welsh Springer. Other than happing a puppy is fun I think an adult adoption is a great choice.
That and look for your next job at a place that that offers work at home or allows dogs at work part time. I have a work at home job now and it makes caring for an old dog easier.

It seems like better helmet technology does help, but what technology and by how much is the question.
|32 weeks 6 days ago||I can't believe there is not||
I can't believe there is not a better helmet design by now. Using 40 year old tecnology seems odd. Could you use a soft outerlayer wuth a semi ridgid liner to cushion the blow? Being hit by something other than a bulletproof hard plastic shell should be examined.
I played for Tappan Junior High in the 1970's and we still had some leather helmets and getting hit by someone wearing a leather helmet was less painful than plastic. They provided more cushion in my opinion. Isn't there a high tech way to significantly improve the helmet and make it less of a weapon?
|33 weeks 4 days ago||So the community college or||
So the community college or commuter college (aka U of M Dearborn for example) and good frugal alternatives, but there is something to be said for the college experience. I think many of my generation (kids in college now) tend to do too much for their kids and the experience of fending for yourself is a good life lesson. Handling money, paying rent, washing clothes, finding an apartment and figuring our how to feed yourself - among many others - are good things our kids learned.
I see the college as training wheels for life where mistakes seem to cost less.
|33 weeks 4 days ago||Slightly different||
Slightly different perspective. My father covered my college in the 1980's and he said it would be an in state public school unless I wanted to study something not avaialble at those schools. I'm not sure an 18 year old is in the best position on how to spend $200k+. If you can afford it that is great but I would rather have that money in my account towards retirement. I ended up offering the same deal to my kids, I would fund an in state education and they would have to cover the difference if they wanted to go to a private school or out of state. btw some out of state schools and private schools cost less than Michigan in state does.
I like the idea of avoiding student loans and the idea of a frugal education, as long as it meets the needs of the student. My wife lived at home and communted to U of M Dearborn. I do however belive there is some value to going away and living in a dorm.
My brother dropped $200k+ on a daughter to go to Harvard to study anthropology, I certainly would not have done that but it depends upon your avaialble funds.
I think your retirement needs to be funded before your kids education. If you can do both great but it should not be one or the other.

I have one child graduating from Michigan in May and another that is a sophmore. I leaned on the 529 when both were in school at the same time and cash flowed some of the expenses when I could.

I feel your pain. I have a cottage in the hinterlands and for 15+ years and only recently got access to broadband. I have had Dish for TV (essentially added on to my main home account for free). However I can't use Dish for internet becasue the delay messes up with the VPN I need to get into my work network.
I'm currently using Verizon 4G for internet but since I'm not at the cottage very much the 4G is is affordable. If you need cellular booster antenna check out Wilson yagi antennas. I have some other wireless alternatives now but the upfront cost is very high.
I messed aroung with a wifi antenna and was able to pick up intermittant signals several miles away but am in a poor location for line of sight. If you have good line of sight to a public wifi you might want to give that a try.
