Against which team are we most likely to win by a large margin to help rest players for Nebraska - the answer has to be Illinois. 816521

...for the DM code.

11 weeks 1 day ago Yeah, this is for "extra" content.

ESPN and the networks will still be subscription based via cable or other OTT packages.

It's more like CBS All-Access - where you get CBS content via broadcast or cable anyway, but then subscribe to get access to their old content catalogue or exclusive streaming only content (e.g., Star Trek Discovery).

My guess is this will have special original sports themed programming, more "30 for 30"-style short docs, some of their B-tier podcast/radio talent doing visual stuff, access to back catalogue 30 for 30s and the like, special ESPY, OTL and similar shows "extra" coverage, and perhaps most notable of all, I bet Insider morphs into this entirely.

Instead of paying to get access to special writing (like the Athletic), I think ESPN is going to go increasingly visual with video production, and they're going to want you to subscribe to this to see special pieces, interviews, highlight packages, and analysis dedicated to your favorite teams.

32 weeks 1 day ago Yeah, this is definitely

Yeah, this is definitely agreed to with the recruiting benefit in mind--this is like granting a free digital unofficial visit to every recruit (at least w/ access to a Prime account) in the country. EUMTK!

You rang?

1 year 36 weeks ago The article you link is pretty lazy.

Just points out that he's improving (which, duh) and that Lions have a decision to make whether to keep him on the roster or put him on the PS. I wish the best for him, and think he does have a shot to be a solid backup some day, but the reality is he's far from it right now. It would be roster management malpractice for the Lions, given their depth issues (and Stafford's recent durability) to use up a spot on him (they can barely field a two-deep of LBs right now!).

1 year 36 weeks ago He's in Kellen Moore purgatory

Based on preseason observations, he's been struggling and not looking like a NFL QB - and regardless of improvement, he's far enough behind DO to be out of the running for backup. Basically, his options are make the roster out of camp as 3rd string (like Kellen during his Lions tenure), get put on the practice squad, or get released altogether.

Unless he plays lights out in his preseason work, making the team seems dubious given the Lions poor depth at other positions (keeping 3rd qb would not be the Patriot/Bob Quinn move). My guess is he comes on well enough to get the PS invite, without doing well enough to get poached by another team.

He then holds the clipboard and learns for a year, and they'll see where he's at in Y2 or look for another developmental QB.

1 year 36 weeks ago Was that pre-fees or post?

I just got Sec. 4 for Wisconsin (same seats across the field) for $150 each pre-fee--definitely jumped on those. Maybe it's the same broker liquidating some inventory.

1 year 36 weeks ago In the same boat, bought with same logic.

Just purchased some SIDELINE tix for $150/each ($184 w/fees) for Wisconsin, after having the same concerns as you with flying out, hotel, car rental and wanting to lock something in.

I would say for any other game not WI and lesser extent PSU, you should have no problem day of the game getting tickets for reasonable price.

Also, tix go up on these platforms at varying times and sometimes like in my case today, someone really wants to offload tix quickly and purposely prices to undersell the market. So be vigilant and monitor Stubhub and others, and you may get yourself a deal as conflicts arise for potential sellers as we get closer to the season.

1 year 37 weeks ago Follow-up Question

What are your thoughts on the "outbreak" going on in Florida (Miami) and what are the risks there? Unlike in Brazil, it's actually summer there and seems to be some threatening articles out lately about travel.

Is the risk still very low if say, someone travels to and hangs around Wynwood (dining/entertainment district area where they found it) for a week?

1 year 41 weeks ago Is a separate forum even needed?

I think it would be simple enough to have two views that each user can toggle between, something like 1) All Topic Mode (all posts are viewable); and 2) On-Topic Mode (all off-topic posts are excluded from view).

No need to even label "OT: _____" in titles, as an OP (or later, a mod) could tag the post as off-topic to be viewable only by user choice.

2 years 17 weeks ago Without getting into the

Without getting into the complex legal specifics of trademark law, the short answer is no--Sony doesn't need permission. Sony could get sued certainly if they portray the NFL in an egregious/false way (e.g., there's a "commissioner" in the film that snorts a bunch of blow, parties with hookers, and basically ignores all league problems presented to him--that would be quite unrealistic). I imagine the producers took care to stick as close to reality as possible, focusing more on the doctor's story and implications, and less on official league response.

CBB was my law school classmate--I can tell you he has things figured out. In addition to presiding over the largest and most exclusive Kentucky Derby gala, and practicing law at a very high level, he still somehow finds time to put out the quality Smart Football pieces and take care of his young daughter.

2 years 51 weeks ago For all the boxing/wrestling fans in the house

A friend is involved with an awesome new documentary film project about L.A.'s Olympic Auditorium, one of boxing and wrestling's storied venues, and just launched a Kickstarter. People like Muhammad Ali, Hulk Hogan, and Andre the Giant fought there, and movies like Rocky, Raging Bull, and Million Dollar Baby were shot there.

Take a look at the Kickstarter page http://bit.ly/olympicaud and you can find them on Twitter @olympicaud.

3 years 4 weeks ago I didn't go to Michigan, but

I didn't go to Michigan, but I can confirm the uselessness of my school's career development office. If you weren't a part of the typical biglaw OCI train, you were told to network network network. No one in the office attempted to do much other than maybe give you an obvious suggestion to do some informational interviews or google alumni in the area of interest. I made appointments with no fewer than 6 different counselors over the 2 years, multiple sessions for some. Always the same bs: network, do informational interviews, check the school job board where alums post positions. I'm actually getting angry recalling my interactions with them.

I think bschools (the best ones anyway) do a much better job of installing people in the career office who are excellent networkers in their own right, and can actually truly help place you in meaningful internships and positions. At least in my school's case, the turnover year to year pretty much prevented that--it would always be some recent alum who needed a job or some old out of touch lady who didn't have a clue about the hiring climate.

3 years 4 weeks ago Yes, NYU > Michigan and it's

Yes, NYU > Michigan and it's not close. NYU has far more (probably double) the biglaw options, far more interesting PI options (a focus), and of course many more meaningful clerkship opportunities.

3 years 4 weeks ago I'm overstating it a bit--I

I'm overstating it a bit--I have a fair amount of transactional experience in certain industries, and still have a couple clients I do side work for so I'm not 100% useless. Even 1 of the clients has offered to bring me on as a partner in his venture, but unfortunately I wouldn't earn any money for probably 18-24 months so it's pointless to pursue. That said, I would much rather start a non-law business than a practice, but finances pretty much foreclose the first option.

Honestly for me, if I went back, I'd still end up doing the same thing. I had no mentors, no family support or guidance, and really didn't have any idea on how to figure things out. Even now, the training is useful and I don't completely ignore the value of my degree. Above all else, it's the financial impact that's the problem. Aside from the usual consequences of not being able to buy housing, go on vacations, support a child, or do anything else due to poor credit--it also (as I've indicated) forecloses a lot of opportunities along the way, whether getting alternate training (biz school, MA/PhD, technical/coding, etc.) or starting a business/pursuing partnerships.

Law school might be fine, but only if you either a) go to the top schools like HYSCCN (I don't count Michigan as being one of them), or alternatively, b) go to the cheapest and highest ranked local/instate public/ you can find. If you can't get the prestige, it's absolutely CRITICAL to graduate with next to zero debt.

3 years 4 weeks ago I'm basically in this

I'm basically in this crowd...went to law school, took on $175K in debt, and have been terminally underemployed since. I won't be able to buy a house for decades. I knew in the first month I hated it, and soldiered on stubbornly. When I did what I thought was well enough to land biglaw employment, I stayed on after 1L year and ultimate was proven wrong.

Now many years later, and I actually applied to and got into top business schools (Ross included), but am in the unfortunate position where I can't afford it because I have no borrowing capacity. I'm basically at the point where I am unemployable (in both legal and business roles) and my only remaining parachute is to hang a shingle probably (and struggle at that for the foreseeable future given the market, lack of firm experience, and fact that I pretty much hate legal practice generally).

3 years 11 weeks ago I meant it metaphorically,

I meant it metaphorically, that it starts out like a well-oiled machine akin to the quality of the end of BB (because they're basically using the same team and starting not completely from scratch). It took the BB crew 3+ years or so to really get going, and the quality of the latter seasons of BB is far superior to the first ones.

3 years 11 weeks ago As someone in the

As someone in the entertainment industry, Better Call Saul is getting some rave reviews around here; it practically picks up where BB left off. Some are even saying the first few episodes are better than BB's start (which is saying something). Keep in mind that the producers, key directors and writers from BB are involved with this show and they've had nearly a decade to conceive of this world and refine the look/feel and story. All the kinks ironed out, so to speak.

I don't think it will touch BB's overall ending and arc, but don't be surprised if it's successful in its own right and ends up well acclaimed, just as Frasier was (just a supporting guy) to Cheers.

3 years 49 weeks ago Tried to post this in the Eron Harris thread

Some early hype on Stauskas from ESPN

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/draft2014/story/_/id/10930456/nik-stauska...

Chad Ford highlights a workout done with Stauskas, McDermott, and Payne, among others, and how Stauskas was really impressive.

Key section:"Stauskas is making a play to be more than just a shooter, and the early returns look really good. He was absolutely terrific in the ballhandling drills he was put through on Tuesday.

Stauskas told me he grew up playing point guard until a late growth spurt moved him to the 2. While he wasn't a primary ballhandler at Michigan, he showed the ability to initiate the offense this past season. Based on what I saw in drills, I think he's got a chance to get into the conversation with Marcus Smart and Tyler Ennis. He isn't a pure point guard, but neither is Smart. And his ability to shoot off the bounce means he's going to have the ball in his hands a lot, regardless of what position he plays.

We have Stauskas ranked No. 12 on our Big Board, and if teams are convinced that Stauskas can play some point, he could end up passing Ennis on draft night."

3 years 49 weeks ago Stauskas at NBA Combine

I can't make a new post--so perhaps someone can do so:

4 years 49 weeks ago Can someone post this espn insider article on THJ?

I always lurk and rarely post, so don't think I have enough pts:

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/blog/_/name/nba_draft/id/9277188/2013-nba-draft-sneak-peek-combine-participants

Glowing praise about THJ: "Hardaway showed that passion and more Tuesday. He was the best player on the floor for all two hours. He played with terrific intensity, nailed shots from all over the floor and played above the rim whenever he hit the paint. While he doesn't have his father's crossover, he handled the ball against Canaan and was able to get where he wanted on the floor. Hardaway has size, excellent leaping ability and a huge 7-foot wingspan for a shooting guard."

4 years 51 weeks ago Everyone was expecting a

Everyone was expecting a decline from Burke after following Morris and now the same of Walton (and he's the highest rated of the 3). Assuming he has work ethic (and I assume he does if he's a JB recruit), I actually expect Walton to be better than Burke as a point guard. Maybe not as a true alpha dog scorer/bigshot type, but in the true sense of distributing the ball and running the offense, I think he will be better if nothing but for he will have an overall better cast to distribute to than Morris or Burke.

5 years 1 day ago Yeah, can't help but feel a

Yeah, can't help but feel a bit fuzzy when this happens--and a good reason why not to get too upset when certain recruits decline M, as there's nothing wrong with picking your dream school.
