I guess the most frustrating thing to me in these constant arguments is the seeming misunderstanding about how far in the future recruiting is. Beilein talked about needing more shot blocking after the Kentucky 2014 game and went out and grabbed a couple big, tall C as soon as he could (the 2016 class).
The 2016 class didn't go ideally to plan, but still grabbed a top 50 PG and a possible Caris Levert 2.0. The 2017 class already has a top 60 player who is a perfect fit for Beilein's system. You add one more elite player to that and you're talking about an great class. Does Beilein need to recruit better than the 2014-2015 classes? Yes. Do we have evidence that it is better? I'd argue yes, and we've all seen what JB can do with talented teams.

I think you're being a bit of a concern troll here. This is what Harbaugh does. He finds the biggest bullies and picks fights with them.

I have literally given you a W/L record difference. I've given you some basketball logic (Levert playing 30 min means less Dakich). You keep mentioning that we had some bad losses last year (not this year mind, but last year). I think you seem to be mistaking the assumption that Levert would have made us GOOD the last two years (which I believe, but acknowledge is a based on assumptions not easily proveable) and that Levert made us BETTER. You keep mentioning that non-con last year and while it was ugly, we were also a Mark Donnal FT away from beating a 1 seed, and we also beat Syracuse.
This year we are hanigng our hats on beating Texas, Purdue, and Maryland so far. Caris was our best player against Texas and his min against Purdue provided a tangible benefit to this team. He was the only reason the Xavier game wasn't a blowout earlier. Anyway I'm done deabting this. If you can't see that the guy who had the highest ORtg in the NCAA while taking at least 25% of his team's possesions before he got hurt isn't valuable, then we have such divergent views of the game of basketball as to make further discussion pointless.

W/ Levert (14-15, 15-16) Big Ten play: 6-2
Now you can argue that we didn't play the best teams with Levert, but the stats are pretty clear to back me up.

There is a middle ground between "everything is fine nothing needs to change" and "Fire Beilein immediately" and most UM bball fans for some reason seem unable to grasp it. Acknowledging that losing both one of your top PGs and your best player in two consecutive years will depress your performance is not apologizing for some disappointing results, it's merely fact. Beilein needs to make some defensive adjustments probably to the coaching staff. He needs to adjust his recruiting (though I'd argue the way he handled the PG position for 2016 shows he's learned from the last two years). The 2017 class is off to a fine start with Jordan Poole (a top 75 kid that seems to perfectly fit Beilein's system).
In conclusion, I'm not saying the past two years are acceptable nor that there are absolutely no problems with the program. I'm just saying the man who turned the program around deserves a lot more benefit of the doubt than he's getting from 90% of mgobloggers.

Claiming Caris didn't make the team better is dumb. Even if somehow you think being able to score 18 pts a game super efficiently while being the best passer on the team is somehow not valuable, Caris pushes Dakich off the floor which is a huge plus. Not to mention the other guys would have had more room to operate (mainly thinking Robinson and Irvin here) if Caris was still the number 1 guy on the scouting report. Caris didn't win us the NJIT (though criticizing him for that game when he was really, really good seems dumb) game or EMU game, but a lot of the guys on the team hadn't nearly developed by that point.

No way does this team struggle to make the NIT. If they match last year's 8-10 conference mark (a pessimistic prediction), they would be 18-13. Last year's team was just on the wrong side of that bubble at 16-16, so 18-13 def gets you in

The general rule I've seen stated for posting political comments is that if I can tell who you voted for in the last presidential election from your comment, it's a no-no (look at some of the most negged comments in this thread). I think the OP was fine here because he wasn't looking to blame/smear/support any particular party and most comments in the thread focus on the science/timeline of what happened.

|32 weeks 5 days ago||I'm not sure what world where||
I'm not sure what world where a 20 pt halftime lead in basketball is equal to a 10 pt lead in football. We outscored them in the paint 20-0. They only rebounded 20% of their misses (off of ugly shots that produce weird bounces). They didn't get a FT. I'm not saying this team is going to the Final Four or even the tournament, but to be displeased with that first half performance (I'm not bringing the 2nd half so far into account) is to fundamentally misunderstand basketball and how Beilein teams have performed against this competition usually. I can point out many better UM teams who struggled much more against equivalent competition (Concordia game from a couple years ago, 2008 team against Saginaw Valley, etc.).
|32 weeks 5 days ago||And there is a whole half to||
And there is a whole half to play. They only lost to Nebraska by 15 (over the whole game). If we play a sloppy second half and that's the margin, then that's fine to be disappointed. But the Kenpom margin was 25 and Vegas was 29 so to be upset to be up 20 at half is ridiculous.

Maybe it's because I don't often frequent open threads, but I'm trying to figure out how a first half where we are up by 20 (and saw the first mini signs of life from Kam Chatman) has a majority of super negative comments.

Ok I'll be that guy (though this strays close to politics I think I'm safe because it's all in jest). He's framing the court storming argument in the same terms that Donald Trump uses when talking about, well anything really.

I think a lot of the reactions here were over the top as far as getting rid of Beilein, but I do think a hard look will need to be taken at changing asst. coaches in the offseason. Perhaps "encouraging" one of them to take a lower tier HC position. Of course it's also possible that they make me look as silly as I did when I posted that I didn't think the 2013-2014 team would end up being good after we lost to Arizona by 1.

I have a friend who works with the AD who said basically Hackett doesn't want to move from the west side of the state to live in A2 full time (which is what a full time AD would have to do). The AD job would have been his if he'd wanted it, but he does not.

Michgian went 2-2 in one score games. They ended up around where you would expect their record to be. Until today, they conssitently performed like a top 10 would be expected to perform. THis is a massive overreactiont to an admittably awful performance.

Great stuff as always. I think you have the WR Smoke/Inside Zone picture up instead of the NCAA route for Michigan's pass play though.

Even if you think Wagner is the best center based off of this game (a dubious assertion at best), Doyle is your number 2 center clearly. DJ Wilson is nice but he really shouldn't be a center.
|35 weeks 1 day ago||I believe they are the number||
I believe they are the number of screen passes that Rudock threw. Obviously it's important that you throw a catchable screen but it probably shouldn't count into the DSR the same as a 10 yard hitch or a 15 yard out.
|41 weeks 18 hours ago||I feel people who dismiss||
I feel people who dismiss turnovers as "luck" are oversimplifying the issue. The only part of TOs I considered to be mainly "luck" is fumble recoveries due to the random bouncing of an oddly shaped ball. Forcing fumbles is something that tends to happen when you play physical, sound defense. You get INTs by pressuring the QB and making plays in the secondary. You avoid INTs by good QB/OL play. You avoid fumbles by having your ball carriers be sound technically. So when I see someone say that so-and so will not have the same TO luck, I only think thats necessarily true if they recovered an abnormally high rate of fumbles or lose an abnormally low rate of fumbles (i.e us in 2011).

Yeah Liggett didn't have a football team for a couple years (2007-2009), but they definitely have one now. Nowhere near as good as DCDS obviously (though we probably have a better baseball program)

There honestly isn't that huge a difference between the schools. When I was deciding between Cranbrook, Country Day, and Liggett, I went on tours to all three. I would tell you to do the same and see where you are most comfortable. Personally that was Liggett for me, but to each their own.
