Hasn't Brian already touched on FERPA's likely irrelevance on a couple of blog posts?
|2 weeks 4 days ago||A couple points: 1) Why||
A couple points:
1) Why would you say the linebacker numbers are ugly when they have a better success percentage than both the corners and safeties?
2) Perhaps the lack of impact from the SAM was due to the position being filled by a back up for most of the year. A full season of Jake Ryan in 3rd/4th and long, and there would likely have been more of a positive impact from the position.
|2 weeks 4 days ago||This would be somewhat||
This would be somewhat applicable if the team was some indistinguishable blob of incompetence, but it isn't. SAM and MIKE were two spots where the team wasn't broken, but that is what they are addressing with the personnel moves.
IMO, they are taking their strongest personnel away from the position where his skill is most productive, and putting him where he makes the defense possibly more sound, even though it takes away a good bit of the schematic advantage his superior talent provided.
Sounds to me like the defensive equivalent of the tackle-over formation.

I'm kinda tired of seeing so much emphasis being placed on Jack Miller's size (6'4/290lb) being a problem when Nebraska lists their starting center, Cole Pensick, at 275lb. He was second-team All B1G. First teamer Corey Linsley is only 295 IIRC.

In the second half, KSU had four real drives (I'm taking out the drive after the INT and the kneel and the game ender) - two of those were 60 yard drives that took a combined 13:23 off the clock, one included three first downs before the fumble, and the other got extended twice by Michigan penalties before KSU ultimately had to punt on 4th and 5 from the Michigan 45.
If Bill Snyder and KSU wanted anything other than to make the second half as short as possible (which they did - KSU had the ball for 21 minutes in the 2nd half), the score would have been worse.

That would seem like a very Ohio thing to do.

Gus Malzahn => Bryan Harsin => Al Borges. Talk about a drop off.
The most depressing thing about this: Al Borges would only get about $100K pay raise to make what Harsin made last year.

Definitely an athletic kid who has shown flashes.
However, he hasn't picked up the ability to make his reads at the same rate of Ross and Morgan. As a result can play tentative, leaving him soft at the point of attack and unable to get adequate depth when he drops into coverage.
Thought he played his best game in Ross's absense against OSU, but the ILBs kinda got beat up in that game.

Shifting the goal posts on the guy from "unbeatable juggernaut" to "top 20 team".
But they overcame a 20 point deficit against GaTech at GaTech once their backup QB got acclimated in his first start.
I think they are still a top-20 team.

Ohio St finds themselves in a very similar situation as Michigan, personnel wise. The relative performance between the two teams will be the truest matchup between staffs yet.

Hall was dressed and on the sideline, which I took to mean that he was ready in case Elflein didn't perform.
And explanation using the aggregate age of the interior line is a very nebulous explanation for this lines troubles. Maybe it effects the probability of the staff being able to put together a good line, but it doesn't supplant the obvious explanation that Miller, Bryant, Kalis, Magnuson, Bosch, and to a lesser extent Glasgow could not consistently perform the assignments they were given.
Meanwhile, Elflein and Decker can.
Although I should note that I suspect Elflein and Decker are getting much easier assignments from their coaching staff, as well.
Next year will be a good judge, as both OSU and Michigan will have 4-5 guys on their line from the recruiting class of 2012 or later.

Gus has a flair for the dramatic that suits him in basketball where exciting individual plays occur with some frequency.
In football, where big plays are typically well-orchestrated plays coming together in subtle ways, he reaches and sounds gimmicky, like with that "OMG WHAT A MOVE" he threw out during that long Miller run.
|13 weeks 6 days ago||I think Hall was in uniform||
I think Hall was in uniform because Meyer didn't make the decision until he saw what Elfein would do. It seems very much like he hedged the Hall punishment to protect himself.
Didn't work out for him anyways, and all is well that ends well.
|13 weeks 6 days ago||Apparently Pat Elfein did as||
Apparently Pat Elfein did as much to take that spot as Marcus Hall did to lose it. And Pat Elfein is a RS Freshman, which points to the real annoyance: OSU has turned two of their 2012 guys into capable starters, Michigan hasn't been able to pull it off with any of their 2011 and 2012 scholarship guys.

Bollman/Warner putting up 34 with that personnel at a neutral site really puts the 41 Michigan scored in a different sort of perspective.

Gotta be fair here, everyone of those guys have done as well or better than one would have expected given their circumstances.
|14 weeks 2 hours ago||At this point, continued||
At this point, continued steady improvement makes him a pretty good player next year (he was a pretty good play already down the stretch). He came in raw, didn't redshirt, and he has undergone some massive growth in his three years at Michigan.
I would imagine he is just now getting to a place where he can focus on the sort of technique that takes a DL from good to great while having an understanding of his own physical abilities.

So I guess its ok that I feel kinda crappy about this team.
|14 weeks 12 hours ago||Players from that 2010 team||
Players from that 2010 team that ended up drafted:
Vincent Brown - WR - 2011 3rd Rd
DeMarco Sampson - WR - 2011 7th Rd
Ronnie Hillman - RB - 2012 3rd Rd
Miles Burris - LB - 2012 4th Rd
Ryan Lindley - QB 2012 - 6th Rd
Jerome Long - DT - 2012 7th Rd
Gavin Escobar - TE - 2013 2nd Rd
Leon McFadden - CB - 2013 3rd Rd
TCU had 8 guys drafted that was on that roster and they went 13-0. The Utah team that you are referencing went 12-0. SDSU had talent on offense, at least, to rival those teams that completely overwhelmed their opponents. They went 5-3 in conference and were the third highest-scoring team.
|14 weeks 13 hours ago||That that play would have had||
That that play would have had no effect on the participants in the B1G Championship is a pretty strong indictment, however.
Devin completes that pass, and OSU is still the favorite against MSU and Michigan is still in the bottom half of their division, unfortunately.

|14 weeks 14 hours ago||Take a look at their coaching||
Take a look at their coaching staff - it definitely isn't just Saban making that team a juggernaut on the field and recruiting. That staff includes Nussmeier, Smart, and Christobal who could all manage consistent double-digit win seasons at Alabama.
Could probably manage back-to-back 8 win seasons at Michigan, for that matter.

"but he thinks he's 'going to go blue'"
Is that not the most pathetic recruiting quote ever?
Who cares how he phrases "commit to Michigan", I wanna know if that god-awful T-word, "thinks" is a direct quote. If not, what is?
If we have reached this point and he merely "thinks" he is going to commit to Michigan, momentum has swung way far away from Michigan at this point.
2014 is going to be another very tough season, considering the schedule, and Hoke really needs to make sure he stops the bleeding if he wants to last to see the upperclassman filled fronts he's been desperately needing.

When the one disagreeing with you is a guy with his finger on the ban button calling you a hated, falsely-entitled jerk, maybe that is a valid statement.

I'm not really sure about that.
1) The season did a lot to him. It wasn't the board that led him to stop charting with the Iowa game.
2) The board is easily avoidable, and I suspect that there are things we do not see that have contributed more than the board/comments.
3) Go back and read that picture pages that was mostly a very defensive and combattive response to Space Coyote. If anything, Space Coyote has been extremely respectful in an atmosphere where most have vehemently disagreed with him (including me).
4) And like I said earlier, there were valid complaints about putting interviews with HS soph on the front page of this blog, or soliciting interviews with high schoolers via text and posting them verbatim. Brian's response to them was a combative dismissal that basically added up to "Haters gonna hate".
I think Brian's disposition has effected this blog negatively, and is at least somewhat responsible for the issues he addressed in this post.
