I think your number 4 point is probably the most accurate. With the sub package for each formation Borges might have well held up a sign that said what play is going to be run, then watch as 11 defenders swarm to the ball and complain about execution. Just having the defense guess about the play will cause an improvement with blocking.

I was watching the draft on my iPad while putting the kids to bed. Chad Ford on espn has had Gary Harris as the best SG available for the last 12 picks and counting. Great that Nik was drafted before any other big 10 players. Two top ten players in two years is great.

I have been so impressed with the coaching job John Beilein and his staff did this year. If you think about how they started the year to how they finished it, it does not supprise me at all that they won the big ten outright. The growth is evident in players like Irving and Walton.
I could not help but watch Illinois and ponder how much better Nnanna Eqwu might be if he was coached by this staff. Congradulation to the team and I am looking forward to the turnament.

I think you mean after Uconn, the playbook got dumb.
It was finally better against OSU. I will be remembering Devin for ND and Ohio as a demonstration of his talent, not when Borges decided to run 1 play each out of 40 different formations.
Most of Gardner's production has been based on play calling and OL play, possitive or negative.
I thought he did an amazing job, and can't wait to see him play next year.

|42 weeks 4 days ago||Can we wait that long?||
I know it sucks now, but if we can wait a few years, Michigan could have a o line consisting of 3 seniors and 2 juniors instead of freshmen. They will all have at least thee years of valuable experience playing the line, which is more intricate and complicated than "push that guy over there." They will also have two top rated running backs in the country.
I have not been a huge fan of Borges and his playcalling, and have questioned the coaching ability of those involved with the offense, but I can completely see what the coaches are saying about being young. Unfortunatly, I think they will still be bad next year, show improvement in '15, and be good then next year, and be great from then onwards if Hoke can keep up his recruiting pace.
Personally, I hope they get that chance.
|43 weeks 1 day ago||I disagree. Yes, or o line||
I disagree. Yes, or o line sucked and could only give Gardner a few seconds to throw. If that is the case throw some 5 yard passes, maybe 7 or 10. WR were open, but there was no time to throw. So change the game plan and stop complaining about execution.

If four guys aren't getting there, whey can't they bring five. Didn't Michigan do this a lot Mattison's first year because the rush by itself was not great? I know that leaves part of the field open, but if the qb has all day to throw, it won't matter if we have 15 defenders out there, someone will be open. Might not work against the great o-lines but against lesser quarterbacks, which the big ten has a lot of, it should rattle them enough to get more stops.

I was told by a Figthing Irish fan that when ND is on NBC they never show Kelly on the sidelines. Because this game was on ESPN and ABC affiliate, they decided to show the HC is all his MFing glory. I think I remember an article about NBC showing it once, dealing with the fall out, and deciding not to show him again. I am glad recruits are able to see the difference.
However, the Hoke comparison would not draw the right parallel because of the good result. I think a better gif comparison, if there is one, would be after the punter missed the ball against Ohio, Hoke put his hands on the sholder pads and camly talked to him. I remember thinking at the time that I was was impress at how calm Hoke was because I was yelling at the punter from my couch.

To resolve the issue, I went up to my bedroom and brought down a Cecil Fielder poster and placed it over the hole. I thought I had gotten away with the crime when the poster fell down a few weeks later and I got in trouble. I think this one stands out more because of the aftermath than the actual loss.

This may be because my perspective is not the same as those athletes, but this lawsuit bothers me. As someone who worked around 30 hours a week during college and between 50-60 during the summer, i have always thought that the scholarship was their "payment". school is expensive and they do not have to pay for tuition, books, or room and board. While that may be enough for most, some will always want more. That could be money, fame, cars, tatoos, or ice cream. Right now I want a bigger house and every once in a while to go to the bathroom without one of my kids, but accepting what we cannot have is part of maturing.
I could see more of an arguement about EA games, but since I always make myself as a player as soon as I get the game, I would have to admit I would love to be privileged enough to have my likeness used. Then again, I

|1 year 12 weeks ago||The Team, The Team, The Team||
From what I remember when kids talk about what they like about Michigan, two topics seem to repeat themselves. The team seems like a family, and the coaches talk to you like a real person.
I know there are exceptions to this, but many of the lay our the red carpet recruits have a diva like quality. They are Chad Johnson, Terell Owens me-first people who tend to ruin team chemistry and only look out for themselves. This goes directly againt the "The Team, The Team, The Team" mentality Hoke learned from Bo. I wonder if the lets-sit-down-and-have-a-nice-chat type of visit is partially designed to weed out those who do not like this approach. It would not supprise me if Mattison told Hand that he would not start as a freshman, but would get his share of snaps. That was probably a releif compared to being promised he could meet Michael Jackson.
Keep in mind that not all great performers have to have this attitude. Just reciently, Denard was the opposite of a Diva. Charles Woodson was a great player, but not a diva. Desmond Howard was a great player but not a diva. Maybe Treadwell was not, I am not sure, but when you post a picture of a pile of money it tends to lean in that direction. I trust the coaches judement, and whatever direction lost interest first does not matter. I root for those that choose to come to Michigan and hope that any kid who goes elsewhere will be okay when they loose to Michigan.

Knowing this was going to be the last hurrah for some of the Michigan players, I wanted them to do well.
Before the tournament started I wanted them to win just one game to erase the sting from last year. They did and I was satisfied.
When they played VCU, I figured at that point, they were playing with house money. They dominated, and with their play told the talking heads to shut up. They made it to the sweet 16, I thought it was a successful year. I was happy.
Then the improbable comeback happened, and I watched the ending five times, shaking my head with marvel. I was joyous.
They played Florida, and I spent Easter with my family. My DVR gave a higher priority to Mickey Mouse. My kids were happy and I watched every Gif and highlight I could. I was disappointed I missed the game but elated.
Last night, I watched as the back up players who cheered so eagerly and enthusiastically for those who had more playing time return the favor with great plays and clutch shots of their own. I was ecstatic.
Now, on the eve of the national championship game, all I can think about is how I do not want the mantra to include references to the fab five, and how they could not get it done. I am nervous, but hopeful.

And Burke climbed Pauline Blvd to where it intersected Maple Raod, and there the Lord showed him the whole Big Ten, from Nebraska to Maryland. From the valley of corn, to the city of wind, all of the forest land of Penn, and to the heathens who worship trees with eyes.
Then the Lord said to Burke, “This the conference I promised on oath to give to those who will play point guard after you. I have let you see it with your own eyes, but you will not hold sway over it.”
Then Burke, the point guard for the Wolverine, left for the NBA. They mourned for his loss in Ann Arbor, and no one is sure where he will be drafted. Trey was a sophomore when he left, and his jump shot was not weak nor his strength gone.
The Michigan fans grieved for Burke for the basketball offseason until the time of weeping and morning was over.
Then Derrick the son of Walton was filled with the spirit of a Wolverine so his future team mates would listen to him and did what the Lord had commanded Burke.
Few players have risen in the Crisler arena like Burk, who knew greatness face to face. For few have ever shown the mighty cross over or performed the awesome deeds that Burke did in the sight of all Ann Arbor.
At least this is the best explination I can come up with for the last few minute of this game, and some others...

Growing up in Michigan as a Lions fan, it was inevitable that part of my rooting interest would stray to other teams. I initially became a 49ers fan, not because of the actually games, but because on Tecmo Bowl for (the original) Nintendo they were the best team. They had Ronnie Lott on defense, and the cheat play that always worked on offense. Down and A, Down and A, Down and A, Bomb…Touchdown.
As games progressed, I found myself sticking with SF because they had an easy offense to understand, and a lot of plays that worked against any defense. My favorite was the full back rollout that was open every time and always gained more yards than it should. That is when I noticed that in actual game, they would run this play several times and it would always work the same, full back with a lot of open space. I began to appreciate the West Coast offense, and how well it was run. They became my favorite team to watch.
When they hired Borges, my first thought was about Michigan running full back rollouts that would gain lots of yards, and great timing plays. I know the past players may not have been conducive to that type of play, but I am looking forward to seeing what this offense can do with the play caller in his comfort zone.
Great trip down memory lane, great writing, and I look forward to hopefully building a team like this in the future.

My first post would read something like, “I am overly frustrated with my team because they have lost a game I wanted them to win. Even though they have already won 20 games, the coach sucks and must be replaced with
one who will win every game every year.” #Ilovethisteamsomuch
And maybe, “Our 18 year old basketball players are having a difficult time recently. They should be kicked off the team because they have disappointed me.” ##1fan

|1 year 28 weeks ago||Mystery Solved||
I have always wondered what Brady says that is so effective with recruits, and now that mystery is solved.
I would play for him.
|1 year 28 weeks ago||Still feel it||
For a long period of time, I would watch Michigan football and it would ruin my weekend if they lost. That cannot not be said of basketball a while ago. Sure many years ago, the fab five caused me to wear my shorts long and choose number 4 whenever I played on a team. Over the past few years I would check out a game if they were on T.V. and still cheer and wear my Michigan basketball t-shirt, but I was never too bothered if they loose. I still wanted them to win, but it did not affect my mood for longer than ten minutes.
I think I picked Michigan basketball up again during Manny Harris' first year. I hoped that they would somehow reach 20 wins and at least make it to the NCAA tournament and not hear the Not In Tournament overused jokes. I cheered audibly when they made it.
Now, Michigan basketball is appointment viewing. I look forward to the games, and watch them with the same fervor I normally reserve for football. When the last second Michigan three fell, I got up out of my seat and danced around the room still moving when I saw the heave.
When I saw the splash of the net, it felt like somebody kicked me in the gut. I can still feel it. I had to be careful not to let my mood affect my interaction with my children.
I did not like the way the game was called. I think Michigan can still do well if they win their home games with so called friendly refs. But I do think this loss will be worth it if they can beat Michigan State, especially in their place.

If I were good enough I would have played at Michigan even if they ran the hampster dance offense. I can't help but think that if Grady played in a more MANBALL offense, he would have worked out his fumble issues, attitude, and dobe much better the more he touched the ball. But then richrod happened. Still Grady is responsible for himself but he could have been better. Green comes in at an optimal time and is a great fit. I think will do well

The reason Stauskas is so good at basketball is because he is a time lord. He has two hearts, that is why he plays the game with a lot of passion. He also has a basketball court on the T.A.R.D.I.S., so he has plenty of time to practice his three pointers.

I think Denards success will be completely linked to a coach who will be able to figure out how to use him. He would be great in SF, or maybe now in Philly. He will be the biggest reason I pay attention to the draft.
|1 year 32 weeks ago||Sportscenter #1 & 3||
On Friday morning, the Robinson dunk was #1. One of the (haha) Burke-to-Hardaway dunks was #3. The thing I love about this team is anyone of the starting 5, and some off the bench would have been by far the best player any any of michigan's teams of the past 10-15 years.
|1 year 32 weeks ago||How you can('t) stop Burke||
I am sure Tubby gave an assistant the arduous task of game planning a way to stop Burke. After hours of tape, the befuddled coach just shook his head and said, "I don't know...rip his Jersey?"
|1 year 32 weeks ago||Give him one||
I understand about the stigma of kickers and punters not being “Real” football players, but I have never understood why kickers are not more heavily recruited. If you think about how many games have come down to a last minute field goals? How many bowl games? Drives that either end successfully with a field goal, or a team looses momentum with a miss. It seems a kicker’s impact matters far more than how much they are recruited.
Remember (or try to forget) when Michigan’s kickers were so bad they always went for it on fourth down, and how much pressure that put on the offense. Knowing that your kicker will almost assuredly make an important kick is a boon to the offense and to play calling.
Welcome aboard. Looking forward to him winning some games.

|1 year 32 weeks ago||Building character||
I think Michigan played a good team, and just like Duke, is one that seems to be in Michigan's head. I saw a lot of nerves and over trying in this game. Are those issues fixable? Michigan does not just have a good coach, but a great one. I think they have already been working on this issue. Will it be better by next game? I hope so. By the next time we play OSU at home? Should be. Will we get home calls and the crould as a boost? Yes. Should we be outraged that Michigan lost? Not so much. This is a young team is still comming into prominence. They will be better. Number 1 is still obtainable.
Remember the book "Three and out?" First, you loose big. Check. Then you loose close. Check. Then you win close. Soon. Looking forward to the next step of winning big. The program has momentum, and this game is just a speed bump. I am looking forward to March, and any game that helps build character is a benefit.

|1 year 33 weeks ago||Sorry Dad||
I would love to see Ed Helms in The Hangover 3 play a pickup game of basketball with the wolfpack, and his dad, played by Fran sitting just off the court. During the game Stu would drop the ball out of bounds, and the gif of Fran is yelling at him to use two hands.
It would explain why Stu is so neurotic, growing up with McCaffery as your dad, always worring about when the next rant/meltdown is going to happen.
|1 year 34 weeks ago||Momentum||
Not only an Burke change momentum when he runs the floor, but he can also change the momentum of a game. It is fascinating to me how he can establish the tone of the game from the start, making sure Michigan is comfortable which seems to relax the others. Then, like the start of the second half, the opposition has momentum after going on a run. He makes an unbelievable move, sets up a three pointer or dunk that fires up his teammates and deflates the other team.
Is that a measureable stat, momentum changing plays?
|1 year 34 weeks ago||85-62 michigan||
85-62 Michigan...and a double double by Burk.
|1 year 34 weeks ago||Remember||
As much as his stats, his smile, and his attitude, I think I will remember him not for his record but for the guy who helped us transition. He was a man who always tried to put a positive spin and bolster his team mates. I found that just about every time he would touch the ball I was waiting for him to weave his way around the mass of bodies into the open where he was just a beauty to watch. I will remember the multiple times where, breaking out into the open, I rose from my chair and chanted "go, go, go. go....." and then looking for someone to high five.
Other players have impacted the game and deserve to be remebered, but Denard gave me memories. I wish him all the best with his pro career.
|1 year 34 weeks ago||Effective Play||
I might have noticed it because they reset the play a few times, but one of Michigan's most effective plays is where GR the !!! is at either the top or bottom of the floor near the corner. He will then watch for Burke who is about 2/3 of the way around the three point line, drive to the middle of the key. As soon as Robinson watches Burk drive, he cuts quickly to the basket. They tried this move at the start of the game, and a great example starting at 39:45ish on the above video.
You could see Robinson start his cut, but when Burk pulled up his drive, Robinson moved back to his starting position at the three point line. It was very effective.
|1 year 34 weeks ago||Time||
Keep in mind that time to come up with a good gameplan is also the same time the SC defensive coordinator to read figure out all of Michigan's tells. If reading this blog can help me call out plays before they happen, then Michigan is going to have to out execute.
I think this gane will be close and will swing on a deep turnover.
|1 year 34 weeks ago||GR!!!||
I would just like to point out that Robinson is amazing at dunking over really short defenders like the one in the picture.
|1 year 35 weeks ago||My thought exactly||
There was a really good article about Denard on ESPN at http://espn.go.com/colleges/michigan/football/story/_/id/8778229/denard-robinson-establishes-legacy-michigan-wolverine
I was thinking about simple math and hope Borges realized it too. Michigan needs a running back. Michigan is looking for a way to get Denard on the field. Denard seems to be the only one who has had success running the ball this year (though mostly as a quarterback).
I know the SC defense needs to be taken into consideration, but if there are not some misdirections and other plays like we saw in the Iowa game I am going to quietly fume until September.
He needs just under 90 yards to be the all time leading rusher as a quarterback. I hope he can do that because I think he deserves it.
(And also becuase I will be wearing my brand new #16 jersey my wife got me for Christmas.)

I was proudly wearing my new Michigan #16 jersey watching my kids play with their new toys, when instead of the expensive gifts we bought them, they decided to play with a green and a red baloon. That is when it hit me. I am too much of a Michigan fan when the traditional colors of Christmas bother me because they are the colors of Michigan's biggest rivals?
|1 year 36 weeks ago||depends||
I think it depends on where you live and who you most interect with. I live in southwest Ohio and have to put up with bucknuts. I really root hard in that game. Not many spartins or nd fans here. My brother lives in Michigan with a lot of MSU fans and that is his most important game. Same with a friend in Indiana.

What I have been really impressed with so far this season is their defensive effort and how well the coaches make adjustments at half time. Really fun to watch.
|1 year 36 weeks ago||heavy fun butt Tight End package||
I was thinking of New England when the TE's where mentioned as well. IF (IF IF IF IF) used correctly they could be a very effective combo. Maybe, as Tom Brady still proudly proclaims himself a Michigan man, he could give some pointers.
Or maybe, with many players moving to the coaching ranks, he could call plays in a few years.
|1 year 36 weeks ago||Maybe||
Maybe. Or perhaps the players are going to wear ninja outfits underneath. What people don't realize is that Kovacs is actually in there gathering until on what people are saying about the uniform. Then Brandon will ignore it.

I am not a traditionalist, but if you are going to change the uniform at least make them interesting. When ever I see they make a change I actually look gorward to see what they will look like and am disapointed. I would love to see the rejected ideas and see what would have been better. I am sure the readers of this blog could have come up with at least 20 better ideas.
Maybe they could wirk the bloomin' onion into the bumbers somehow.
If these were in ncaa 13 as alternative uniforms, I would never choose them. (or maybe just play as Michigan against bad uniform michigan just to stick it to the man in my own little way.

|1 year 36 weeks ago||character counts||
I think one of the new requirements for players is going to be character. I think Home and co. would rather have a four star hard worker and good team mate than a 5 star diva. recruiting seems to reflect this. I have started to think that if Hoke backs off a guy he has got a good reason. Team chemistry can count more than star rank.
|1 year 36 weeks ago||This is not Sparta||
My first visceral reaction to the news of the suspension was wishing Hoke was more like Dantonio, where he would drive his players directly from jail to the game.
Then, after I come to my senses, I am so glad we have enough integrity to make sure students know there is a standard of conduct that will not be allowed. I am not sure what the violation is for, but I hope the students have learned their lesson, and hopefully for the final time.

I like RichRod and defended him to most of the Michigan fandom I suround myself with. I like parts of the spread offense, but it was the defense that let us down, alot, and all the time. And the offense in big games. And special teams. And holding onto the damn ball. And all the yelling.......
Maybe his 2010 class was not the best, and Hoke and co. has done an amazing job with what was given to them. In my mind, I thank him for bring in two of my all time favorite Wolverines in Denard and Jake Ryan.
I wish those who choose to leave the best, and hope they find what they are looking for.
|1 year 37 weeks ago||Question for next time||
Another large part of the offense is the pick and roll. It seems like Morgan stays in the pick position much longer than McGary. Some times McGary does not even wait until the defender gets there before he takes off to the basket. Is McGary leaving too early, at a good time because his man is already out of position, or should he wait for contact?
|1 year 37 weeks ago||Recreating the Magic||
I'm glad the athletic department has told us that, just like two years ago, we are going to win on a list minute touchdown. I now feel much better about them playing a night game because Michigan usually does not do well at 8:00 recently. I will be sure to say "WOW" at the appropriate times also. However, just to be sure, I hope that they let us know when to say wow by putting it up on the screen like laugh tracks for TV shows.
Rccreate the magic, WOW moments, I have never taken a PR course, but I am sure those would would be used day one of PR 101.

I have watched more Michigan basketball in the last three years than I have in the last 15 combined. I think we have found the answer to what would happen if Michigan got some high level of tallest. I was talking to a coach about this team and what he was most impressed by was the fundamentals, even from the freshmen, and that speaks volume about coaching.
I also have wondered why the late game comebacks. Is it freshmen, the pressure, or just the basketball version of playing a prevent defense?

I really think that running over people comes at the end of a good run. The ! at the end of a sentence. The problems the rbs had was that they spent half the time looking for possitive yards when there was not any. If they ever got to the second level or picked up five yards I am sure they would love to lower the boom, be the hammer not the nail, and other sporting phrases.

|1 year 39 weeks ago||Want to trust the coaches, but...||
You can’t be a Michigan fan without complaining about the current Michigan players and over valuing recruits and redshirts. However, about half way through the season I would have liked to have seen some of these players, especially linemen be given a chance to play. Football is a game of inches and one slightly better block might have been the difference between a 2 yard loss, and me having a good weekend.
I want to believe that the coaches knew which linemen deserved to play, but I am not sure if they decided to ride out the season just to give some of the young guys more time. I think that they know that with the newer higher rated guys, they have a better chance in the future, but it seemed like it came at the expense of this year.
The difference between 8-4 and 11-2 is so very slight.
|1 year 39 weeks ago||Some if the problem is playcalling, but only some||
I thinkt it is the old addage, that the coach looks smart if the play works and looks dumb if it does not. The rest is how well the players do. I thought it was really dumb to run up the middle, our weakness against their strenght. However, there were a few times when I thought the play call we good, and if they would have move one guy over a little then there would have been a running lane and we are all happy right now. The only problem with this argument is that the playcall should be based on what we do well. Unfortunatly, without trick plays that only work sometimes, not much was effective. They block a little better, get on a roll, different outcome.

…..and now, let’s throw it out to Sally with a report from Ann Arbor.
Hello, this a Sally with DNN, the Devine News Network, coming to you live from a game of sport in the northern part of the United States. Here, once again, the Angry Iowa Running Back Hating God has struck, but this time it was not another in a long string of Hawkeyes to feel this god’s wrath. The unfortunate target in this game was a well loved and respected Michigan running back. However, this is not the first time he has decided to branch out.
As many of you know, the AIRBHG, as he has been come to know by those that both loath and fear him did not always turn his attention to football. In his younger years, he was a much lower ranked deity given the task to simply aggravate people in his given areas of responsibility. The AIRBHT was the god of clogged cutlery drawers, misplaced keys, and soup cans that have been left abandoned on a grocery store shelf. It was his innovative techniques that caught the attention of the major deities which allowed for his meteoric rise to the position he holds today. Clearly not satisfied with his current position, and possessing the drive and ambition to continue to move up the divine mountain, the AIRBHG has shown just what he is capable of.
When I spoke with the coach of the Wolverines, he told me that he understood the threat and he shared his concerns with his players, especially the former quarterback who today was to undergo a position switch. Denard told us that he only wanted to do his best to be a good team mate, to work hard as a Michigan Man, and do what his coaches asked him to do. It was all for the team, I mean, his offensive line was going to block, Devin was going to throw, and he was going to run if that is what the coaches wanted to help get a win for his team. Hoke followed up that he did try to appease the god with a virgin, as is the old fashion custom. Not to kill, mind you, just well, who knows what the higher up gods want them for. Hoke was unwilling to use a student at Ann Arbor so he instead turned to East Lansing. Unfortunately, none could be found.
We here at DNN are interested in the carrier of the Angry Iowa Running Back Hating God, but our best wishes and prayers go out to this kind, well liked, unfortunate young Wolverine. May he have a speedy recovery.
Back to you…

That 'il do, Borges, that 'il do.
Even if it was against Iowa and might not work next week, it was nice to see both Devin and Denard in the game. I know I have been ready to start the torch and pitchfork company in Ann Arbor, but I thought the play calling was fun.
I am really proud of these seniors. What they have gone though while they were here, the adversity they experienced, I seem to have a special affinity for this group. I will miss Denard, Kovacs and co. Well done, gentelmen.
Now there is only one thing left...Beat ohio

/realizes there is one, possibly two more games
/backs out of room

Does anybody know the accuracy of the AIRBHG. In what I can only assume is a completely accurate photo of him, it seems like there might be some collateral damage when he decides to smite. I hope none of the Michigan players accidently fall under some second hand wrath.

I really like the way Hoke hit those questions head on, turned them so he was able to fill the gap he needed to, and stuff the reporters questions on the line. By the end the reporter was forced to punt.

I like how Hoke actually shows emotion. All too often many coaches, including Hoke, think stoic is best. It seems to me that after the play Hoke wanted to just smile as he always does and deflect praise to the kids. I think there is a moment there where I think he was going to restrain himself but the emotion of winning the game on such a great defensive hit was too much and he had to fist pump. Not once, but twice. I think I subconsciously did the same. If I was the cop I would smile too.
