Reading each of the entries made me feel glad that the student was able to find a better fit, sad that character / off the field issues got in the way or sad because of injury.
In all cases, I don't feel any ill will to any of the players and genuinely hope for their best.
On Play 8.2.4 (Power play that gets stuffed), I noticed that the pulling guard #75 seems to get stuck by his own line before he can make it to the hole. This wasn't addressed in the video, so I'm wondering if it was part of the play design or if #75 just didn't execute?
I 100% agree with your sentiment. I had to step out to the Absopure stations multiple times in the game. I ended up taking one of the $5 empty single-use water bottles from a friend and refilling it several times throughout the game at the sinks.
A fair proposal (as previously mentioned, with my modifications):
- Allow empty water bottles to be brought into the stadium
- Install water bottle filling stations outside every (or every other) section entrance, like the ones that say how many "bottles" are saved
- Advertise during the 4th quarter how many water bottles were saved by this program (good PR)
- Sell reusable M-branded collectible water bottles (not single-use bottles) for a high price (even if it's expensive, at least it's reusable AND collectible).
Hello there. I would rather have kids from an area that doesn't carry the aura of privileged affluence.
i.e., not from the area of SE Michigan known for literally barricading themselves from Detroit. I know the Woods/Shores is a few towns separated from the actual borer, but the approval of such projects stretch along the south side of 94 through St. Clair Shores.
Oh, I for sure believe that these kids have the talent to play and have the freedom to train / practice to get better. In fact, I expect these kids to be kids of great character.
But, it's worth acknowledging that at the LL level, the wealth of parents can go a long way in affecting how much training a kid has / ability to participate in these events / access to good coaching. I think it's worth understanding that the GP area is a unique bubble in Michigan where the culture and attitude is much different. As somebody that has spent significant time in Mid-michigan, west michigan, Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Detroit, GP area, St. Clair Shores, Brownstown, and Rochester, the GP area seems least connected to the realities of the rest of michigan.
Oh, I didn't mean to imply that they were "bad" by any means. I expect that most of the kids on that team are kids of great character. But, at the LL level, I'm always torn to see kids from extremely affluent areas participate in these events. I understand that they have the skills to participate and do represent the best of the area, but the ability of their families to afford letting these kids take extra time to practice / train / play games sheds light on how much wealth can affect even kid's games.
I'm torn -- I very much enjoy having a team from Michigan make the LLWS, but Grosse Pointe is entirely unrepresentative of Michigan and the Michigan spirit.
Lebron picking his friends has not been so great in the past. JR Smith, Kyle Korver, Tristan Thompson (Lebron wanted to get him on a max!! deal). Not awful players, but they are aging and their ceilings are very obvious.
I'm loving the hype around how much the team should be improved this year, but that brings with it an anxiety around Shea missing these expectations. Tempering expectations from "great" to "slightly above competent" will still yield high expectations from the team as a whole.
Overall, though, I'm excited for this year. Go Blue!
