37 weeks 6 days ago I feel you!

I'm about 200 miles north of you in Paso Robles.  My substandard Euchre skills get used once a year during summer vacations in Lexington.  Sure the weather's nice out here, but no Bells distribution, no Euchre, and constant media reminders about how rad USC is...

1 year 5 weeks ago Delonte

Any word on why Delonte Hollowell get's no mentions when talking about secondary?  He seemed to make enough of an impact in practice last year to burn his red shirt.  Played decently against Nebraska and made a huge play in the Sugar Bowl.  I was expecting him to be at least the third corner if not pushing for the 2nd spot.  Then this spring has been crickets.  Anyone have insight?

2 years 17 weeks ago Awesome

I'd love for a more video talented member to make a reel of Carvin's tackles.  He and Cam both had a nasty mentality to me when making hits.  Sadly Cam would bounce off or fall down due to poor technique.  I forget exaclty which game it was, but I rember Carvin getting credit for a sack because his hit blew the quarteback behind the LOS.  He also had that get up quick and swagger about him after hits that showed how much he wants to hit.  That to me was one of the biggest elements missing in our defense.  That desire to blow people up.  Carvin's got it, and thanks for the data to back it up.  Dude was an undersized true freshman.  He's gonna be a true beast.

On a side note, I love how someone can post some previously discussed pointless topic on the board with a grammatical error and get 40 responses in 10 minutes.  This dude spent hours and hours putting together something actually useful and has 4 comments hours later.  Wow.

2 years 18 weeks ago Observation For Stat Type

The people who seem to doubt that Denard can, you know, be an actual QB, claim he could only hit bubble screens and shorts to the flat.  Yet if you look his stats for big 10 play only, he led the league in yards/attempt at 9.3.  I have always been led to belive that yards/att directly relates to generally how far downfield most attempts are.  This makes me think we was actually hitting people downfield.  I can't find YAC adjustment stats for college, which would settle the argument.  But just wanted to get feedback on my understanding of yards/att.

2 years 18 weeks ago Best West Coast QB

In my opinion, the best west coast QB of all time, Steve Young, was just a tad over 6' and was not as great a passer as Joe Montana was.  But he was able to make the 5-15 yard passes, and his scrambling/running ability was what truly made that early 90's 49ers offense the best in the league.  He would generally take off 4-8 times a game.  If Al Borges can work with Denard on picking his spots to scramble, design some roll outs where he can choose run or pass, I think Denard can be extremely dangerous in the West Coast.  Remember, it is the THREAT of running not just his actual running that makes him such a dificult QB to defend.  But above all, Denard has the one trait that is most important for all great QBs.  His improvement from freshman to sophmore could only be accomplished by someone who has that elite internal drive the pushes one improve.  He's got that.

Also if he no longer has to worry about making reads on every single run play as well as pass plays, it seems to me that the West Coast may be a bit simpler for him to run.  Is that crazy talk?  I mean, in the RR offense, Denard had to learn and make the proper read on every single play.  In a pro-style, he can just hand the ball off roughly 50% of the time.  Wouldn't that allow him to concentrate more on pass reading during practice, thus allowing him to develop even more as a passer?

Cheers

2 years 22 weeks ago Agreed

I think that is the obvious next step.  I might put together a look at the lineman at Wisc and MSU and see what it looks like.  My guess is start big, get bigger.

2 years 23 weeks ago Sorry

2 years 23 weeks ago Yeah

He's one of the freshman I was hoping to get clarified, I thought I saw him on the field too, but not sure.  Thanks

2 years 23 weeks ago I thought he was better too,

I thought he was better too, as a player.  But that being said, the production did not increase in any concrete way. He was fourth in tackles among the DL this year, less than Banks.  So that was my question as to maybe the 3-tech being a more natural fit.

2009

40 Tackles

6.5 TFL

5 Sacks

2010

30 Tackles

8.5 TFL

4 Sacks

Maybe there is something in the UFR that demonstrates an obvious improvement.  But I didn't see it, or at least see it in a way where I thought to myself, wow RVB is obviously more natural at the end.  But if you feel that he was obviously better at DE, than I'll consider my question answered.  THanks.

2 years 23 weeks ago Clean Up

Thanks, tried to clean it up.  As you can see by the barely legal point total, this is my first ever board posting.  So tips are appreciated.

I concur about Washington, I've always been really bullish on him.  If he can become a true 300+ lb NT, I'm really really liking the DL next year

2 years 23 weeks ago Yeah, Scarry

I see what you're saying.  The dream is that Washington, Ash, Talbot, or even Wilkins if his weight contiunes to climb, can establish themselves in the interior.

2 years 23 weeks ago Sports Fans Can Be Lame

I feel that the majority of those fans that boo 19 year olds and scream for RR's head because the team lost to Sparty are fans who's involvement with the team crosses into personal self worth.  It matters little that the coach cares more about sitting a possibly injured player more than his job.  Could care less about how a coach molds players off the feild.  All they care about is that they need a comeback when some drunk Buckeye says at a bar "Michigan sux, ur gay."  Then they look at the W-L record, and feel inferior to the Buckeye fan.  This makes them very sad.  Buckeye fans high-five while the Michigan fan sheds an angry tear into his beer.  Then a Sparty fan pulls the same move and desperation sets in.  "How can my life be like this, RR is ruining my life"  It is a completely emotional response based on a crutch for self esteem.  And all the Mgoblog charts?!?, graphs, logic and what not is pointless because replying in a bar with "Yeah but Denard" and "Our offense's YPG is trending in a way that leads one to the conclusion that we will have a top 5 offense next year" does not stop the Sparty high-fives.  It only increases the "Michigan IS gay cause maths is gay" laughter.  Sparty and Buckeye high-five, Michigan fan looks across bar, sees a Domer who quickly avoids eye contact.  All is lost.

2 years 24 weeks ago Wowzers

Seriously, name any other athlete you have ever watched that was more exciting to watch than Barry.  MJ, Kobe, Jerry Rice, Gretsky, those type of dominant winning players are fun to watch. But for the trully consistent "Holy Shit, What Is That Guy Even Doing" feel, Barry is my all time topper.  Vintage Sac Kings Jason Williams playing with C-Webb and Divac had a similar every play something crazy could happen feel . Zidane had a matching effortless beauty where he seemed to be playing slower yet faster than everyone at the same time. I remember watching Larinov with the Wings and thinking "Jesus, when he was young he must have been plain jaw dropping."  Mike Tyson was an equal small package of dynamite that you watched nervously like a fire cracker because you knew it was going to pop, just not sure when.  But no one I have ever seen has made me enjoy their sport in such a unique way as watching Barry run.

Thanks for the reminder on a day when my great escape from reality, Michigan football, is so filled with lame fail from the ugly side of fandom.  Wake me up when there is bowl game and I get to watch Denard run again.  Feel thankful I get to cheer for Martin and Molk as they play their hearts out again.  Watch and root for some seniors who I get to see in the winged helmets for the last time, marking another year of life passing.  And lastly, watch for hints from Avery, Demens, Gordon, Lewan and maybe a surpriser that a future may exist where something beautiful happens again.  Then I will get to remember that this is simply a game that win, lose, whatever, can be just plain fun to watch.

2 years 25 weeks ago Ware

I will never forget a dude that has the same arms as Mike Martin yet only half the body.

2 years 26 weeks ago Bay Area Classic

Wow, bringing out the old Bill Walsh playbook.  If you remember super bowl XXIII, the Bengals were killing people with the no huddle up tempo offense.  The NFL even tried to make it illegal because opposing coaches couldn't handle it.  Bill Walsh came up with this defense of the no huddle.  Instead of just trying to sub out the D-line quickly, a guy would just go down with cramps and they would slowly make the sub.  I forget who they were, but the same two guys got "injured" about 8 times each that game.

2 years 30 weeks ago Kinda OT, Kinda Not

As a Detroit native (who like the majority of my neighbors moved away in the 80's) that lives in San Francisco, I have two teams I now live and die with.  Michigan Football and SF Giants baseball.  What has been amazing is that the last few years for both teams has been remarkably similar.  Two tradition rich teams going from perenial contenders to pretty much laughing stocks overnight.  Everyone here is familiar with the Michigan saga, so I just wanted to write about my SF fandom for a bit .

With the Giants, Barry Bonds "retired" and a team that was completely built around him had to find a new formula.  The Giants brought in Bruce Bochy who had done an amazing job with a horrible Padres team making them competitve every year and even won the Division.  He was a well respected manager around the league but never managed one the "big" teams.  He was an absolute failure for 3 seasons.  The team had the worst offense in the baseball for 3 years straight.   All the stat wizards were calling for Bochy's head and GM Brian Sabean's as well.  They were obviously idiots because eveyone saw that the players were playing terribly.  It had to be the coaches had no idea how to coach and the Management had no idea how to recognize talent.  The team was horrible to watch, for a reason exaclty like watching Michigan is horrible right now.  One part of the team was slowly becoming the best in baseball, while the other side was mired with no progress.  The pitching was becoming dominant, the hitting was a joke. People wanted to trade Tim Lincecum for Alex Rios.  People demanded trading Matt Cain for Prince Fielder.  In spring this year people wanted heads to role because Johnny Sanchez was not traded for even a mediocre bat.  Tim Lincecum won his second Cy Young wining only 15 games.  How, because he was the best pitcher in the NL but some of the lowest run support in all of baseball.  Who had lowest, oh Matt Cain who has a record of 14-8 with 2.89 ERA.  The offense was a complete joke.  We had John Bowker, Travis Ishikawa, Emanuel Burris, Fred Lewis, Eugenio Velez, Matt Downs......  A bunch of AA-AAA talent that we were forced to play with.  Trust me, watching a constant barage of 1-0, 2-1 losses is the exact feeling as watching the Iowa game.

But, I never wanted Bochy or Sabean to go.  I saw that if we just kept the amazing but young pitching staff intact and patiently waited for a few bats to arrive, we could build something special.  And this year it started to come together.  I really don't expect the Giants to win the WS this year.  But all the young pitching is here for years to come, and the offense is starting to come around.  By being patient, the Giants have built what looks to be a very special team that will compete for years and years.  There is hitting talent down on the farm that will add pop over the next few years.  What the Giants have right now I wouldn't trade for any other team in baseball.  And I feel the same way about Michigan.  Patience.  The high school kids playing D right now will turn into college players and the team will really become something special with the offense we have in place already.  Stay the course, because, oh man does it feel good when you've been preaching patience on the blogs for 3 years and the team did what you wanted and you find yourself 1-1 in the NLCS.

2 years 31 weeks ago Cam Gordon and Fear

I was pretty fired up about a couple of hits Cam Gordon laid on RB's yesterday.  Sadly he doesn't quite have the strength and technique due to being a freshman first year starter and both hits were shook off.  But a couple more years of getting some man strength and experience, oh man, he's got the mentality to be killing people.  And that to me is one of the most important unspoken missing elements to our defense.  It is in no way fear inducing.  Opposing skill players don't get butterflies playing us.  Offensive mistakes happen when they are playing with a bit of fear of the defense.  You can X and O all day, but when a freshman running back shakes off a big hit and carries another 4 of your defenders 5 yards down field, they are winning the battle of fear.  Kovacs is such a solid player, would be great off the bench to give starters a rest, but no running back or receiver is hesitating because images of Jordan are dancing in his head.  People talk about needing to be aggressive, equating that with blitzes and pressure.  But when I think aggressive, I think about big hits that have a tangible effect upon offensives player’s future actions.  Just think, we've caused 3 fumbles and recovered 2 in 6 games.  The D is nut punishing anyone.  A great defense should make the offense feel physically uncomfortable, but beating our 3 man rush, soft zone defense is more like playing Sudoku then running the gauntlet.

I know this is pretty much a repeat of what Brian is saying, but if Martin or Banks can not beat a double team here, it seems by design that no one even has a chance to engage the runner until he has passed the LOS with momemtum.  I just don't see how this scheme can possibly not yield 3-5 yards minimum.

And just another thought, if Mouton does blow up into that gap and the RB bounces outside, is Floyd 1 on 1 against a RB in space a good option for Michigan? Maybe with UMASS, but if that's John Clay, yikes.
