Phork (longtime ND poster on this board who seems to be in the know at times) was posting in the "Opening line" thread that he expects at least Daniels, Russel, and Williams back.

This is the way it has always been. If you've been complaining about the stretched credibility of the AD due to this since the 70's, fair enough. But I suspect your complaint is just another weak non-argument against Brandon.
It was as full as the CMU's and Akron's and Deleware's of yesteryear.

Students did a nice job of showing up. So did the fans. Completely forgot about all the <100K drama of the off season until later in the game.

Funch, sure. But I saw the same thing the OP did - the outs to Chesson and Darboh floated much too long. Better opponents are going to snatch those up. My guess is that he has a stonger arm, but when he really zips it he loses accuracy.
I just hope he realizes against Sparty those won't be open, so throw it out of bounds.
|1 day 6 hours ago||That's a 190 lb. DB, so once||
That's a 190 lb. DB, so once he locks on I would hope he doesn't have any trouble driving him back. It's a great block, but doesn't speak to his ability to drive back B1G LB's or DT's.
|1 day 6 hours ago||Two sacks, right? Wormley||
Two sacks, right? Wormley and Charlton? I know one of Wormley's was a no-play because of the timeout, but he tackled the QB on 2nd and 8 or so; next play 3rd and 9.
Ace was right that this didn't tell the whole story - there was some good pressure, even with quick throws. But there were plays where the QB had too much time. Still not seeing a lot of pass rush success from Beyer or Ojemudia. Need more there, better push (or slant/penetrate) up the middle.
|1 day 7 hours ago||1. You're correct that||
1. You're correct that there's little push, but there's a safety in the box there that Funchess, Chesson, and Kerridge all ignore. He rushes up and fills the hole, forcing Green back into the pile. If someone blocks that guy it's at least 4-5 yards (I don't think the DT can get off Cole in time to make the play).
2. I know it's tongue-in-cheek, but I wouldn't describe it as a lunge. The DL (or LB, that guy was quick and athletic to make that play) stood up straight and lassoed him. That's not that common, you expect an interior guy to be low. It happens, no one makes all the blocks. But yeah that's a big gainer if he just stays in front of him.
6. Mags isn't driving his guy, but he really shouldn't have to. It's not a great block, but Green should have cut that up inside of him. There are LB's at the second level riding the play, but I think if it was cut inside Miller and Cole had a shot to pick them up.
Anyway, good stuff and thanks for posting. Going to stop here and crap and take a nap.
|1 day 7 hours ago||I agree on Miller - if he has||
I agree on Miller - if he has help on a scoop block on down lineman, he can seal that man well or move off to the LB. Head-up drive blocking, he's still getting overpowered. It's possible that he's better at the line calls than Glasgow though, b/c hat-on-a-hat was much better this game.
Disagree on Cole. Sure he needs to get stronger, but he's not getting shoved around. I like leaving him there and letting him get better.
|1 day 7 hours ago||Context||
It looked like a lot of 6-man fronts to me (do they play a 4-2-5 base D?), with safeties walking up to be a seventh man. Undersized at several positions though, so sometimes hard to tell LB from safety.
This may be the wonderful world of Funchess we're living in though, b/c every time I saw a 6-man front and wondered WTF, I saw the clear double team of Funchess outside.
The OL was able to get in front of the defenders, which is a great start. Hat-on-a-hat. But better/bigger defenders are going to knock some of those pulling lineman back into the hole (or knock them down), rather than absorb the block or be walled off. On too many plays our guys are playing with straight backs and not enough bend.
But lots to be encouraged about, obviously. As everyone is saying, if you put more in the box, Nuss will take the bubble or other free yards in the air.

I think this is overly optimistic, given so much is unproven. But this is yet another area of the team with potential for serious upside. Lordy, it would be incredible if mid-season we had Funchess, Darboh, Canteen, Norfleet, Chesson, and Butt as established threats in the passing game. Holy Balls.

Isn't is just Gerhart and Toddman ahead of him? He's also a hell of a gunner, given that speed (though not sure if he can tackle). I hate the idea of him not making the roster and being given a chance to play.
But the last game surprised me - all the news seemed to be positive recently. It made me thing maybe he fumbled again in practice.
|1 week 6 hours ago||Wow.||
That is the biggest shocker to me on the page. I like Godin, think he can penetrate and has some strength. But I really thought Wormley - who has mega strength and can move - was really going to put it on this year.

Hah! You are awesome, I had forgotten about that.
I didn't mind it, thought the kids loved it and it pumped them up. But I'm curious and I really don't remember - were Brian and some of the other gameday conservatives as up in arms about that as they were about Pop Evil?
Don't get me wrong, the muzac to me is one of the Brandon criticisms that ring true, and I hated Pop Evil. But that was nearly a match in cheeseball factor. I don't remember the same volume of complaints.

He's talked about that quite a bit. But the general assumption was that there would still be captains named before the season - end of season is the new wrinkle.
I think it's fine. In fact I was worried that DG wouldn't be named a captain and it would cause the drama. I believe he'll earn it over the year.
Funny the calmness in this thread, vs. the losing of shit when RR did the same.

They are listed as OR, though I do think RJS being first gives some indication of preference (i.e. the ORs on this list are not alphabetical).
Sam Webb has been talking up the competition at that spot for a while, saying since after spring that it was even. RJS has speed and blitz-ability the coaches like, if I recall correctly.

OL was also a strength for Iowa last year, in my opinion - do they have a lot of them coming back?
|1 week 3 days ago||Except their WRs are truly||
Except their WRs are truly elite, something NW has never had. Their OL has some upperclassmen, a coveted juco coming in, and a 5* true freshman in the fall class. Their D is unspectacular but full of juniors and seniors.
I think they'll be a better team than Iowa, but their schedule is brutal in comparison. Iowa and Wisconsin the crossovers. But I think they beat PSU in Happy Valley, and take down one of the other "bigs" as well, including Iowa. M, Ohio, and Sparty all better be wide awake for those games.

So the OL and RBs met to discuss the protections after the scrimmage. Before last year I would have said great, glad they had time to get that identified before the season. But this was supposed to be the number one thing being worked over spring and summer.
And of course simplify is getting simpliflying-er
