Can you help me understand a basic idea - why is Japan's debt so high? Top exporter, and I understand most of its debt is owned by the Japanese people themselves (or at least that was true at one point), and it's probably accumulated over time. But why?

You could calculate a ROI on police, though it would be fraught with assumptions. Investing in your children is a personal choice that has more to do with existential questions (why are we here? one simple answer is to continue the line) than ROI. Michigan football is not return generating, it's entertaiment. It's what you spend your returns on. Like hookers or ice cream cones, it doesn't give you money back or mitigate losses.

Check out this link. Isaiah Hole had good things to say, and there's a video of Dunaway running a drill.
Compared to some of the camp footage available when he committed, looks like a totally different player. Only 1 rep in a drill, and he's still a little slow starting up, but he's catching everything with ease and flying down the field by the end. And if you notice the others standing in line next to him, you'll see he still has the hugeness he was originally recruited for.

Did they get deleted? There's a ton of vitriol on your posting history, aimed at various people for various things, and you keep bringing up politics for no reason, but I only see one offhand mention of Snyder.
Many political sites for your to express your views. Trying to sneak them in on a sports blog, when everyone else is following the no politics rule and therefor not debating you, is negative millions of points worthy.

It matters to the players, and to the coaches. They're all hyper competitive, and they all want to start.
If you say "given the amount of rotation this line has, it's not as important who's in the first series, because the second guy can be just as productive in terms tackles, TFL, sacks, etc", that's one thing. But you don't understand this level of football if you think they don't care who starts, or that a (presumed) coach's opinion of who will start is not a statement on one player being better than another. They do and it is.

I just hope Godin goes back to SDE and gets a chance to break into that second line. At this point I'd be surprised if Marshall could beat out Godin at that spot.

Sam doesn't either. He thinks Wormley is at 3T and starting over Hurst. He has Gary and Marshall at SDE, with the former starting.

Gut feeling from Webb is very reliable, as the poster states above. He only says this when he knows. Has to a be a coach or someone very reliable who's said this. Remember Gary spent his spring break in Ann Arbor. Don't know if he was able to contact coaches during that peirod, but he may have been working out at the facility.
In any case, it could just be a coach talking about how good Gary is, how much they like him, so good in fact that they've penciled him in as the Day 1 starter. Yes if he's beaten out during practice, he won't start. That's obvious.

Great story. It's "Mott" though, right? Mott Children's Hospital, but people may call it Mott's.
It's a great hospital - I always recommend to folks to have your children there, even if you need to drive a ways. They are the best, it's worth it.
|1 week 6 days ago||I know, I just chose your||
I know, I just chose your comment as a landing spot for the 2016 OL generalities. My post was too long, but what I was going to comment re. your post, is that the 2017 OL could be better than 2016. So I do agree with you. There's too much uncertainty to say either way, but I'm not as worried about 2017 as others. I'm worried about depth certainly, and I'd like to see a dominant OL return soon to Michigan, but not worried about a large drop off from 2016 to 2017. And a large part is due to my 2016 expectations being held in check.
I'd love to see them prove me wrong, they're veterans they could put it all together early and keep it rolling. But the best chances for a breakout offense lie with a QB who can get the ball to Chesson, Darboh, Perry, and Butt (and Bunting and Wheatley and hopefully Hill wins that FB spot and terrorizes the flat), giving enough down-to-down balance that defenses are hesitant. Then we can see this OL occupy defenders while Deveon pulverizes them and hopefully Isaac or other runs right by them.
|1 week 6 days ago||I think M fans need to dial||
I think M fans need to dial back the expectations on the 2016 OL. Bowl game was very encouraging, but extrapolating that out through 2016 is a stretch. Remember this was an OL that couldn't run the ball for long stretches of last year, it's losing its best piece, and the most important position is being manned by true sophmore with little experience who's looked pretty bad in open practices. It's great to have 4 starters back. But Cole is the only standout so far. Braden will find it very difficult to solve his bend/lunge issues, Kalis has just been OK, and Magnuson stays in front of people but lacks strength. Maybe year 2 in the system gets them better, and improved RB play makes better use of the holes provided.
But they're probably going to be just OK. Risk is that they could be bad, given lack of depth. Couple that with QB questions, and the O is a risk. Yes the RB's, WR's, TE's all look great (with a chance to be special, especially the latter two), and the playcalling has been very good. But one of the QB or OL have to outperform what should be lowered expectations if this offense is going to be playoff-worthy. Even with a great defense.
|1 week 6 days ago||Glasgow and Cole were already||
Glasgow and Cole were already good players, any improvement (and I don't think Glasgow had a ton, he was good the prior year) last year can be attributed to more experience/older as much as Drevno or Harbaugh. Braden was better, that could be chalked up to coaching.
|2 weeks 2 days ago||He didn't really have contact||
He didn't really have contact with high school kids at that position, though. Getting back into college coaching made him aware of these camps, and coupled with what he views as attacks on footbal that have proliferated in recent years, and you can make an argument he's doing it for football/kids. Or just a counter to your argument: not having done it in the NFL doesn't mean he would altruistically be doing it at Michigan.
For the record I believe this is about all of it: recruiting was the impetus (first the top kids, then coaching contacts), spreading the brand was something they identified as an added benefit, and those both marry with Harbaugh's existing love of football.

|2 weeks 3 days ago||I'm always more optimistic||
I'm always more optimistic about players than these posts are, but I suppose that's what makes me a fan and not an impartial writer. When RR came in I was hopeful his guys would be more explosive than Carr's. When Hoke came in I thought he'd bring in tougher and bigger guys than RR, building from the lines out. And now I believe Harbaugh has a better eye for talent than his predecessor and see guys who are actually bigger and stronger. Let's hope the third time is the charm.
Very small sample on Kemp, but I see Marcus Rush from Sparty. Nearly the same size, very tough, very smart and gap sound. Wouldn't mistake either for LB, though you'd be tempted to. Held the edge until death. Had some athletic ability to make some plays when they were there. Neither have elite explosion or athelticism, and I don't think either can get to the passer consistently on his own. But pair them with others who are making the QB move and leave the pocket, and I think Kemp can clean up a lot of broken offensive plays. Rush was a great college player, Kemp can be the same if he reaches that ceiling.
|2 weeks 3 days ago||I don't see this comparison.||
I don't see this comparison. Wormley was listed as 6'6" and 270 in high school, an utterly large human being. He was also noted as someone who didn't exert enough effort and would disappear in terms of production. This kid is as an effort baller from all sites. Very seriously doubt Wormley played any LB in high school, and the coaches certainly never tried him out there.
Wormley has incredible strength, like not just a strong guy, but like the strength of 10 men. Even his most lithe form he would have been an SDE at most. Kemp is coming the other way, from WDE to SDE if he grows.

"By and large, bowl wins mean little more than an increase in the trinity of hype / optimism / expectations"
I'm sure you're correct, but has anyone ever looked at whether bowl wins do or do not correlate to next season success? A quick google revealed no such data. I'm especially interested in understanding what effect a 34 point differential win may have.

Would be nice to see that IMG game televised to get an early football fix. Does the new school have any other D1 players? Though it's probably enough with just the IMG guys and Taylor to get on ESPN.
EDIT: the wonders of reading reveal multiple D1 players at the GA school as well, and a #2 national rank. Almost certain to be on ESPN.
