7 weeks 1 day ago The link above explains some

Basically, his scholarship is delayed one semester and starts the winter semester, or January 2015.  So he is like a 2015 early enrollee.  With a redshirt year, his final season would be 2019.

He can choose to pay his own way for the Fall 2014 semester, but the guy in that thread said his eligibility clock starts when he enrolls, not when he first participates with the team.  So even if he doesn't participate, enrolling in Fall 2014 starts the clock and basically automatically counts as a redshirt year.  In that case, he would be done in 2018 instead of 2019.

10 weeks 5 days ago Football catches need to be more objective

Maybe it's revisionist history on my part, but I seem to remember a time when a catch was much more stringent and if the ball touched the ground at all, it was incomplete.  Now we have all these stupid replays trying to determine whether the ground aided the catch and Jim Harbaughs going apeshit after something that totally should have been incomplete.

11 weeks 2 days ago You know you've hit rock bottom

when you pull an all-nighter on a Friday because you're just that fucked the next week.

Grad school numerical methods class in chemical engineering -- we had to write Fortran programs, but I hadn't done a lick of Fortran since freshman year's computing class.  So I basically had to relearn a semester of Fortran in a week, while having two midterms, and of course, homework in every class (profs can't let a week go by without homework, even with midterms and projects due).

replace all the libraries with a picture of the Media Union

and replace all the restaurants with a bowl of Ramen noodles or a microwaved hot dog

17 weeks 6 days ago Incomplete passes...

It's odd how the completed pass rule has evolved over time.  Seems like in the replay era it's gone from

-- If the ball touches the ground ever for any reason, it is an incomplete pass, no subjectivity involed whatsoever

to

-- If the receiver controls the ball and has his hands under the ball and the tip of ball happens to touch the ground, that's OK, it's complete.  As long as he doesn't throw the ball away after standing up and "completes the process."

to

--  If the receiver somewhat controls the ball, it moves after hitting the ground, but the ball doesn't leave his hand in the process, that's complete

I mean, what the hell, before too long, guys will just trap the ball and it will be called complete

18 weeks 4 days ago I'm just glad this will be brought up over and over again

After all, the Kordel Stewart Play and The Horror has really died off the past couple years; I really missed having college promos, car commercials, top 10s, and GREATEST ___ EVER feature something Michigan-related in a bad way.

The Miami people have it made; that Flutie/Phelan play will just never go away

23 weeks 8 hours ago Arizona had the ball with

Arizona had the ball with ~1:40 to go, drove right down the field and scored; they had a sequence where they ran the exact same play along the sideline four times in a row for 10 yards a pop.  Recovered onside kick.  Big pass to the Nevada 22, then two more plays to score with 0:19 to go.  Game over.

31 weeks 2 days ago When my cousin's kid was still playing football

I used to be on the chain gang for most games, and one time the linesman on our side joked that each team has four coaches: the head coach, the OC, the DC, and the "holding" coach that bitches about holding on every single play.  And it's true; there's not a whole lot of plays where there wasn't a coach complaining about holding.

Refereeing is definitely not a job I could do; I can understand these coaches/parents are passionate about the sport, but I find it so disrespectful for them to complain about calls on every single play.  Just shut your mouth and move on to the next play.

37 weeks 3 days ago Is this where we fire up the "back in my day" posts?

I'm not even that old, but I do remember the CRISP lady and practicing my phone dialing speed so I could access registration as quickly as possible at my appointed time and get the classes I wanted.  I'm sure some old fart will come on here and talk about standing in line with punch cards.

37 weeks 4 days ago I don't know a thing about D-line play...

but if you focus on Roh you can see the dude got absolutely mauled in this game and was sealed on just about every play.  I feel bad for the guy, he works hard, but just didn't have the weight/strength to take on Bama lineman and looked very small out there comparatively.

38 weeks 2 days ago At the time...

I think it was the worst home loss since the 60s, and it came the season after we got absolutely shellacked by Tennessee in the bowl game.  There was a long stretch there in the 90s and early 00s where the team never lost by more than 10 (I think the ND game in '98 was 16; even the Donovan McNabb debacle was only 10), and that got completely blown up twice in a 9-game period.  It was humbling.

40 weeks 1 day ago Football means a lot; the school, not so much

I got a bachelor's and master's in chemical engineering.  It was the hardest I've ever worked in my life.  I didn't go to parties, I didn't go to bars, I didn't go to Rick's or Brown Jug or Charlie's or Skeeper's because I was one of those fanatics that needed to get a 4-point every semester.  There were many times when I questioned what the hell I was doing and why I couldn't just take it easy and lighten up.  Engineering was the only thing that made sense to me, though.  So I guess that makes me a masocist.  It's not the school's fault, but the school itself just brings back bad memories for me.

Needless to say, the one thing I allowed myself in college was football on Saturdays.  In the 5.5 years I went to school, I missed one game, and that was because I had a project due and two midterms the next week.  I loved football.  I always wanted to play it when I was a kid, but with my crappy vision (I have absolutely gigantic glasses), scrawny build, and overprotective parents, it didn't happen.  So I lived vicariously through the football team.  Their triumphs were my triumphs and their failures were my failures.  I will never forget the euphoria of the Charles Woodson punt return and sometimes I wish there was a DVR for your brain so you could rewind back to those parts of your life and relive them as they actually were, and not clouded by a nostalgic haze.

41 weeks 5 days ago Nice find...

It's sad that MLB is so anti-Youtube that you have to go elsewhere to find iconic MLB clips.  A real gem from my childhood.

42 weeks 1 day ago Midwestern game

They play it in Iowa as well, but use a 6 and 4 to keep score instead of two 5s.  Apperantly, two 5s is the "Canadian" way to keep score.

48 weeks 5 days ago Why does Italy go...

if they win 3-1 and the other game is a 1-1 tie?  Spain/Italy/Croatia would have all tied each other 1-1 in their games, and Italy would have the same score against Ireland that Croatia had.  Italy and Croatia would be even on everything; GD and goal scored against tied teams, and GD and goals scored against the whole group.  What's the tiebreaker beyond that?

50 weeks 1 day ago There are two events that come to mind immediately for me

We weren't a family that really went to very many sporting events.  We watched games, but I wouldn't classify my dad as a big sports fan or someone that kept up with all the Detroit teams.  But my dad did race cars as a hobby and Indy cars were a pretty big deal for us.

In 1986, we got tickets to the Indy 500.  I was 9 and a HUGE Rick Mears fan.  The build-up to this is so intense, because Indy is a six-hour drive away.  You have to pack, the drive itself, etc.  It has the normal sports excitement coupled with the excitement of going on a vacation.

So we got down there and it's raining like hell.  My dad's races still went on when it was raining, so I didn't understand why this one didn't.  It got rained out entirely and we had to drive home.  Dad told me they'd probably race tomorrow (Monday), but we couldn't stay.  I was crushed.  As luck would have it, it got rained out on Memorial Day and they rescheduled for the next Saturday.  We would be able to drive down again and see it!  So back up the rollercoaster of emotion I went.

Rick Mears lead a majority of the race and was leading with 14 laps to go, but got passed by both Bobby Rahal and Kevin Cogan when a yellow came up with 6 laps to go.  They went green with 2 to go and he just couldn't pass them.  He finished 3rd.  I was SO disappointed and remember I had a hard time keeping it together.  Back down the rollercoaster I went.

The other event was fucking Kordell god damn Stewart.  I will never forget that play as long as I live.  My dad wasn't around that day and I got to sit in Dad's chair while my mom made me a steak.  It was glorious.  Then my mom said with 6 seconds to go -- "so they're going to win, right?"  BOOM.  I put the utensils down and just sat there in shock for at least 5 minutes.  I had really lost my appetite, but it was steak.  I sort of forced it down but didn't really didn't taste it because I was in such a traumatic haze.
