My dad passed away of a heart attack in 2004. He was 65 and I was 27. His passing was especially shocking because I'd just seen the guy 4 days previous for Mother's Day. My dad was a tough man and difficult to please, and for most of my childhood acted more like a demanding boss instead of a dad. It wasn't until I started getting older that I began to understand the guy better, and when I started working full time and bought my first house, I could tell he was really proud of me and just smiled a lot more every time I saw him. We were on more even terms and could connect with each other a lot better; we would talk about lawn care, fixing stuff, or corporate politics/bullshit. Things that college kids don't talk about. Unfortunately, that time was fleeting and only lasted about a year. It was a great loss and I'd lost both a parent and a mentor.
I know it's a difficult time and you have my sympathy.

It's rare to see an Atari game where a projectile just stops after a short distance; usually, they are always constant speed, flying all over the place

I can imagine it being very difficult to execute that volley (I couldn't do it in a hundred tries, I know that much), and it did have certain things going for it in that it was basically served up on a platter for him and he was in a perfect position to put power behind it and place it where he wanted to. It just surprises me that there aren't "volley specialists" or something along those lines that can execute that more regularly; it was an incredibly efficient move that the defense had no way to respond to, which makes it seem like the ideal form of attack.

Not a soccer person, but I always wonder why more players don't hit balls on the fly like that. You see so many wait for it to hit the ground and then fart around with touches, and by that time the defense closes on them and it's over -- is that volley just really hard to do? In my limited viewing, it's very rare for someone to do that.

4 years of prep and qualifying to have your team pretty much take a dump right on the field. The teams are so self-combustible and the wheels come off so quickly and openly for all to see, it's amazing. I can see why so many flock to the sport just for the drama aspect of it.

A high-scoring draw is basically the nightmare scenario for this game
|4 weeks 12 hours ago||Yeah, this is much better than my HS writing||
I didn't know it was "could have" instead of "could of" until I got to college, and I had a 3.98 GPA in high school (one B in English, of course!).
|4 weeks 2 days ago||US won 2-1||
They went up 2-0 on two Altidore goals and looked like they were going to run Nigeria off the field in the 2nd half, then US subs came in and it got hairy at the back end with Nigeria scoring on a penalty with about 7 mins to go.
I don't watch much soccer at all, but my takeaway is that Bradley is really good and US defensive subs are terrible.

reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend one time; she breeds preying mantii and apparently she had one that was sick or messed up for some reason that passed away. She was trying to nurse it along and mentioned "we were just trying to get it to the next molt." That's my new life philosophy, even if it doesn't make any sense whatsoever for humans.

My cousin's kid turned 1 and they had a birthday party, and for some reason this party had Fall Wedding status because my cousin wouldn't let us watch the game. My dad and I listened to the first half in the car before my cousin relented and let us watch the 2nd half trainwreck.
That ball deflected right off Perry's chest. Outgained them 372-268 and still lost.

Ortega loads the bases no outs and they yank him for Coke. Well, that's going to end real well. I just turned the TV off and started cleaning. Seriously, he is so bad I chose to clean my toilet over watching him pitch.

|8 weeks 2 days ago||As a chemical engineer, I only have least favorite classes||
basically any of the classes involving group work with partners you can't choose (Lab 360 and Lab 460). Lab 460 was especially bad for me; we had three rotations, and generally you only have to present for one of the three, but due to an odd number of people in the class, I was the lucky one that had to present twice. Presenters are considered team leaders for that rotation, which involves more responsibility. I got two completely useless partners for one of my rotations; one guy was just unstable and we basically had to meet whenever he wasn't drunk, and I caught the other writing an email that said "this meeting is so useless" after I'd written the entire 20-page lab report by myself. When you get good partners, it's like a dream by comparison.

Ten months total that was, five of it in hospice. The last month she would have wonderful conversations with her friend Penny, which was the wall next to her bed. She didn't know who we were and rarely responded to when we showed up. My grandma demanded to see her for 2-3 hours every Sunday regardless, and I would pick grandma up and drive her there and back, but near the end I didn't have the heart to see my mom for more than a few minutes at a time and I would go to a different wing of the building to watch TV. Hospice is a horrible place and it's hard for me to imagine what it must be like to work full time at a place like that.
|11 weeks 11 hours ago||I did a cruise-by of Bucknuts yesterday||
and it was basically "oh hey, apparently we signed some guy" and nobody there had ever heard of him; a poster or two said "cool" and the thread went away. It surprised me because I was so used to when MSU signs a guy and RCMB busts out a 100-page CROOTING! WE OWNZ SCUM! circle-jerk thread. It made me realize how pathetically desperate our fanbase is right now, especially compared to OSU.
|11 weeks 6 days ago||I hate how he says "our" game all the time||
Who is "our?" I honestly don't know who he's referring to when he says that. The players, the fans? Why not just call it "the" game. He sounds like such a controlling asshole all the time.
|11 weeks 6 days ago||I haven't watched all of them||
but Once Brothers is probably my favorite out of the ones I've seen. I like when history gets involved in sports. I don't feel bad for Vlade in that situation, but it is interesting to see how a quick, impulsive mistake can haunt you the rest of your life. They still hate him in Croatia. I think all of us can find times in our lives where we did something stupid and regretted it, but were lucky to not have it affect us that much; the show gave me pause and made me thankful for what I have, and to be more thoughtful of my actions in the future.
|12 weeks 15 hours ago||I can go there now that the women are off the front page||
That was a smart move that was much appreciated; it's bad when your female boss stops by and you have a girl in a bikini up on your screen
|12 weeks 4 days ago||I watched a bit of the 2nd half||
I don't know squat about lacrosse, but for the 10 real-time minutes I watched, OSU scored 4 goals and U-M didn't even get the ball past midfield. They had a play where the U-M goalie just chucked it up for grabs just past midfield, the OSU guy easily jumped in front of the U-M guy, stole it, and went right down and scored. I assume that's bad.
|12 weeks 4 days ago||You say that while the ND game is on||
No team is more entrenched in tradition than they are. Just replacing the shitty grass they have with field turf caused a complete uproar (they just had an interview with the AD Swarbruck, and he was doing his best political doublespeak to justify it) and the mere thought of putting a Jumbotron in there would give boosters a heart attack. Yet they still roll with a full spring game.
