Yeah. The game itself was great. Columbus is just an incredibly unwelcoming place. The thing I remember most is just how much trash was strewn all over the place, like, everywhere. The bootleg happened in the endzone opposite where I was sitting. That '00 season was just such a disappointment for the most part. That game they actually lived up to the hype/potential.
Definitely regret not going to Pasadena in 2005 & 2006. Especially the Texas game.

Same here. The only one that I would truly consider a bucket list item is going to the Rose Bowl Game with Michigan playing in it. I'd also love to go to the Sugar Bowl just because I think New Orleans is an awesome city and would be a blast to pregame in the French Quarter.
I've been to a bunch of stadiums and the top experience was proabably UM @ Notre Dame in 2006. Obviously, my favorable opinion was molded in-part by the fact that Michigan blew the doors off the Irish that day. Prior to the Brandon era abasement of the gameday experience at the Big House, Notre Dame was the only place I've been to that had purist tradition like Michigan's (no piped in music, no ads, no big screen). And their fans were very hospitable. Contrast that to Ohio State which was basically a dumpster fire outside the stadium where you need to tread carefully if you choose to wear Maize & Blue. Their drunken mouthbreather fans will be in your grill pretty much nonstop. I was there for the game in your avatar and doubt I will ever go back. I did sing the Victors on the concourse in the Horseshoe with a few hundred other Michigan fans after that win so that was pretty awesome.
In the south I've been to UGA, GT, UF, UT, UK, Bama, Auburn, & Clemson. Clemson & Auburn were the loudest. UGA best tailgating. Never made it to LSU but they'd be on the top of my list of SEC places I haven't visited.

|27 weeks 3 days ago||Congrats!! I'm hanging out||
Congrats!! I'm hanging out with my 10 week old son right now so I was in your shoes not too long ago. Here are some random thoughts:
- Diapers: Pampers Swaddlers are the best diapers. Don't stock up too much on the newborn size. My baby was in the size 1's after about 4 weeks and he's not an outlier as far as size.
- Sleep: My wife and I have been incredibily lucky as far as our son's sleep habits. He's been sleeping through the night (11:00pm - 6:00am) since he was two weeks old. I'm sure it's just him, but I'll share our sleep routine just in case it is having an impact that may be reproducible. Last nursing right before bedtime, swaddle him, sleep on his back, in a bassinet right next to our bed, and we have two ambient noise sound machines running all night.
- Classes: I went to a few Daddy boot camp type classes. Personally, I found them to be a waste of time. Everything they talk about in the classes is available online and much on youtube. Learn the "Five S's" from the Happiest Baby on the Block. It's not perfect but it works pretty dag-gone well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eK4O9N3DjJM
- Books: By far the best book I read is Brain Rules For Baby: How to Raise a Smart & Happy Child From Zero to Five http://www.amazon.com/Brain-Rules-Baby-Raise-Smart/dp/0979777763. It's an eveidence-based book rooted in real research in a variety of relevant sciences. All of the recommendations/methods in the book have been validated and published in peer-reviewed journals in the cognitive, behavioral science, etc. It was an easy, interesting read and most of the other baby books I have read are either redundant or speculative.
- Clothes: Buy the onesies that have a zipper, buttons are a pain. Carter's makes really nice stuff.
- Childbirth: In retrospect, my wife regretted not doing a c-section from the outset. She was in labor for 24 hours and had two separte push sessions before deciding to just do the c/s. Her recovery was a pretty easy process for her and her incision has healed very nicely.

Good posts/comments appear the top, bad/troll posts appear at the bottom and essentially out-of-sight. Blame Blake? How about some blame on the coaching staff? MSU had nobody back to return the punt and ten defenders on the LOS on the punt block call. Michigan had two gunners, and before the snap was even botched, five Michigan players were downfield without a single MSU defender in front of them. Max protect punt should have been the call. The coaching staff shares an equal or larger share of the blame for not having the right play call in and putting O'Neill in position to win the game on what should have been a routine scenario. This is the analog to calling a three man rush on the Kordell Stewart play.

DST is unrelated to Leap Year. Leap years are necessary because a day is actually 23 hours 56 minutes and 4.1 seconds. Over four years, this 3 min 56 second "lost time" adds up to a full day so we get Feb 29th to correct for the lost time. If there was no leap year, over time, the calendar would not align with the seasons (in 30 leap years [120 years] we would be a month off).

While this may be unbalanced for the conference as a whole, it is far more favorable for UM than the old divisions.
- Michigan already played MSU and Ohio every year anyway.

- Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin will rotate off the schedule regularly.
There will be seasons where Michigan will have very easy schedule on paper, especially with the ND rivalry on hiatus. I think we can expect to see more undefeated seasons heading into the Ohio game.

Community Q and Fox Bros are the best BBQ in town. The best stuff is outside the perimeter. Fat Matt's is a popular place but the food just isn't good. If someone tells you to go there they have bad taste in BBQ. The only good reason to eat at Fat Matt's is if you decide to do the Saturday brewery tour at Sweetwater Brewery because they are in the same part of town. 83tilinfinity mentioned Sweetwater in his breakdown. Great way to spend a couple hours. $10 gets you admission to the brewery, a pint glass, and 5 tickets to fill it with their various beers. Get there around 2:00 Saturday because the lines can be long on a nice day. One of the best deals in town.
|3 years 16 weeks ago||Excellent write up||
Excellent write up 83tilinfinity. This is an incredibly well-rounded guide to the city and is worthy of being frontpaged in IME. I've lived in Atlanta for ten years and this is my favorite time of year in this city. The Final Four in my city with Michigan in it is just flat out awesome. I'll add few bullets to complement your review.
- The Braves have a weekend series versus the Cubs at Turner Field. 7:35 PM Friday and 1:05 Sunday. Doubt anyone will be interested in the Saturday (night) game. Atlanta is loaded with talent this year and Turner field is a great ballpark. Cubs fans tend to take the place over when they play in Atlanta.
- As mentioned above there is a three-day free concert series at Centennial Olympic Park with an impressive line up including My Morning Jacket & Zac Brown (Friday), Ludacris, Flo Rida and Muse (Saturday), Sting and Dave Matthews Band (Sunday). One local gem in this lineup is Yacht Rock Revue, who appear to be the first act for the Saturday show. Best cover band you will ever see and entirely worth your while. If you are downtown Saturday around noon definitely make it a point to go see YRR.
- World of Coke and the Aquarium are both fun, but I would highly recommend getting away from Downtown, especially at night, and spend some time in Inman Park, Virginia Highlands and Buckhead.
- Lots of great, low-key, restaurants in Inman Park, most of which are listed above. Get dinner here on Friday night and then jump in cab to either Little 5 Points or Virginia Highlands (aka The Highlands). 10 High (small bar/music venue) underneath Dark Horse Tavern is home to Metalsome Karaoke, which is karaoke with a (very good) live rock band with a huge repertoire of rock songs. Not at all your bouncing-ball karaoke. More like being the lead singer of a legtimate band for 5 minutes.
- Murphy's and Rosebud are excellent brunch spots also in the Highlands.
- Strip Clubs: The Cheetah on Spring Street in Midtown is enormous and has lots of quality women, but I recommend making the short drive up Buford Highway to The Pink Pony. Smaller and a little trashier but better quality. The Pony is just a better party, Cheetah can be pretty stale.
- If you're really feeling froggy I believe UGA's spring game is on Saturday. Athens is about 1.5 hours from Atlanta so you'd be hard-pressed to make it back in time for the Louisville/WSU game. But if you want to see Sanford stadium this is cheap opportunity to do that.
- My vote for best steak in town is at Hal's in Buckhead. The Hal's (french cut) Ribeye will change your life.
- For the under 30 crowd looking to rage, Buckhead is where you want to be. Buckhead has an accurate reputation for being frat-tastic, but if blacking out and hooking up is at the top of your agenda look no further. Grab some pre-game grub at Tin Lizzy's or The Big Ketch. Avoid One Star Ranch. There are about 10 bars around Roswell Road and Irby Ave that should be packed to the gills on Friday and Saturday. All of them will have pretty much the same crowd (think lots of 22-28 year old SEC co-eds). Atlanta is to the SEC what Chicago is to the Big Ten. Fives Paces Inn, Pool Hall, The Lost Dog, Red Door, Buckhead Saloon, Churchills, East Andrews, just to name a few. Fado Irish Pub is a little less wild, but is on the other side of Peachtree and about a 5-7 minute walk from the Roswell bars. The Ivy is about a mile north up Roswell (3 minute cab, but not really walkable) and never fails. Johnny's Hideaway is a bizarre and fun spot, but has become more popular in recent years and will probably have really long lines. Keep your drinks off the dance floor.
- MARTA generally sucks for getting around town, but is excellent for transporation to the Georgia Dome. And Decatur which is a cool part of town. Leon's, Iberian Pig and the Brickstore are all great.
- Please don't use the word "hotlanta".
- Have fun. Go Blue. Beat Syracuse!

As a resident of Atlanta it would mean a lot to see this team come down and play in the Final Four at the Georgia Dome. The last time Michigan played in Atlanta was a couple years after I moved here in 2004. M played at Georgia Tech in the B10-ACC Challenge and got absolutely dominated in every facet of the game and lost 68-99. Literally the only positive takeaway from the game was that we held GT under 100 points. A final four appearance in Atlanta would be awesome becuase it has become my home and I would certainly find a way to get into the Dome to be there.

The immediate surgery was probably the application of an external fixator because of the risk of developing a compartment syndrome, and would be unrelated to the comminution (clean break vs shattered) of the fracture. Once that risk subsided (a few days to a week later), they would remove the x-fix and put a rod in his tibia, and they may or may not have also plated the fibula (assuming it was broken). Just looking at the pictures of the injury it looked too proximal to be a pilon (which is a good thing for Fitz).

DMA driven additions:

Florida State: #14 Tampa-St Pete 1.8M, #16 Miami-FL 1.62M, #18 Orlando-Daytona #1.45M #38 West Palm 794k
UNC: #25 Charlotte 1.13M, #37 Greevil-Spart 846k, #44 Norfolk-Portsmouth 709k, #46 Greensboro-W Salem 695k
Texas and UNC fit academically. Texas seems highly unlikely right now, but I guess things can change quickly. FSU gets us on almost most as many TV's (maybe more if you include the markets in the panhandle which I didn't include here), but they probably don't fit the academic pedigree of the rest of the conference.

|3 years 34 weeks ago||Kind of a stretch to say the||
Kind of a stretch to say the GT is way harder to get into than UGA. The Hope Scholarship is a huge incentive to keep the best hs school students in Georgia in the state and UGA's enrollment has imporved because of it. You pretty much have to be top 10% of your class to get into UGA. This wasn't true 10 years ago.
I think GT is the obvious choice for the next addition to the B1G. Big TV market in what is arguably the center of the college football universe. UGA, Bama, Auburn, Florida, Clemson, FSU, Tennessee, and South Carolina are all five hours or less driving distance. Also a big advantage for current B1G schools to get into the talent laden south on the recruiting trail too. by adding GT to the conference. Good tradition in hoops, although not so much success lately, and a good baseball team are also nice adds.
If the B1G makes this move I think Texas or Florida State would be the next obvious choice for the 16th memeber. But Texas probably won't happen because of $$ and FSU's academics will probably keep them out.

1993 Mustang Cobra. Definitely a collectors item, and can pricey with low mileage and good condition. A clean 5.0 LX would be the cheaper alternative. I also like 85 mustang GT. Same look as the LX from 87-93 but without the ground effects that they put on the GT in that era.
Also agree with the 1987 Grand National. Cutlass Salon was also a sweet ride but it would proabably be tough to find one in good shape. And obviously, can't go wrong with a Corvette anywhere in that era. 1990 ZR1 has my vote there
|3 years 46 weeks ago||I always felt like the 2001||
I always felt like the 2001 team exceeded expectations after the departure of Henson and Terrell . Looking back at the roster, the lines on both sides of the ball (DL: Rumishek, Heuer, Lazarus, Orr; OL: Pape, Goodwin, Anderson, Petruziello, Solomon) were nothling like what we had seen the previous 3 years when you had a roster riddled with veteran multi-year, NFL caliber staters (Hutchinson, Backus, Brandt, Wilson, Renes, Hall). Youth at the skill positions (other than Walker) and secondary. It's actually pretty amazing to think that this team was just one special teams disaster and an itchy trigger finger away from playing OSU undefeated in A2.
Tennessee, OTOH, was loaded (10 players drafted, 2 1st round DL!) and blew their opportunity to play Miami for the title by losing to LSU. They certainly would have given the Canes a better game than Nebraska.
M benefited from a weak schedule in '01 and when they finally faced a legit opponent they got their ass kicked.

|3 years 47 weeks ago||Having lived in Atlanta for||
Having lived in Atlanta for the last ten years I can say that, generally, SEC West fans will be rooting for Michigan and SEC East fans will be rooting for Bama. For some reason the SEC East fans (maybe because the power has shifted away from their division over the last few years) are fans of the conference regardless of rivalries and how their record affects them. I found this to be much less the case with SEC West fans, particularly Auburn and LSU fans.
Like stated above, many (not all) UGA and UT fans are more concerned with the perception of the SEC than that of their own programs. I am convinced that their opinion of the threat posed by the Big Ten is about what an average Michigan fan thinks of MAC teams. No joke.

Nail -> Head.
I tried having a conversation about Alabama's defense today with a UGA fan. Any statement I made about Bama was interpreted as a statement about the SEC in general.
Me: "Bama's defense is loaded"; UGA fan: "Yeah, its the depth of SEC teams that no one else can compete with"
Me: "Well, Bama has had a top 3 recruiting class for the last 5 years". UGA fan: "Yeah, all the kids want to play in the SEC".

|3 years 51 weeks ago||Agreed regarding the 1999||
Agreed regarding the 1999 team. This team was so ridiculously stacked on offense, and also the front 7 on D. The back to back losses were devestating. But the season had so many great combacks (ND, PSU, OSU, Bama) that it's really hard to be disappointed with that season even though they could've had a very legit shot at the MNC.
I just went and watched the youtube of the UM/MSU game in East Lansing, which I attended as a sophmore. We had absolutely no answer for Plaxico Burress. Resorting to putting David Terrell out there to try and stop him. We also couldn't get anything going offensively, particularly in the 3rd quarter, which ultimately ended the 1st Qtr/2nd Qtr alternation of Brady and Henson at QB. IIRC, this was the only game during the QB controversy that Henson "won the right" to play in the second half based on his first half performance. States defense was blitzing like crazy. This was the last game M has played vs a Saban coached team. Hope Hoke and company are more prepared for aggressive defense in Dallas this time around.

A friend of mine works in the hotel industry and a few years ago became friends with a bodyguard for Motley Crue when the band was staying at his hotel. He hooked up the Crue and their security detail with low rates on some suites in his hotel. Ever since then, this security guard, who happens to be a former offensive lineman for Ohio, hits him up whenever the band he is touring with comes through town.
A few years ago he was touring with Them Crooked Vultures and got us into the show for free and back into what I guess is a "green room" after the show. TCV was a supergroup consisting of Dave Grohl, Josh Homme (Queens of the Stoneage) and, rock legend John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin. I talked to JPJ for about 10 minutes and took a picture with him. I didn't want to badger him with questions about Zeppelin becuase I just assume he hears that from everyone. We just talked about the custom basses he had made for him for that tour. Nice guy. He's really aged well considering how bad some of the other rock stars from the 70's look. I didn't talk to Josh Homme, but he seemed like kind of a dick but he was pretty drunk. Grohl was surrounded by a horde of people all night so I didn't even bother to try and talk to him.
The security guy has turned out to be an awesome hook up. In addition to that show I've seen Motley & Godsmack for free and he also got us into see Foo Fighters at the Metro in Wrigleyville the night before they headlined Lollapalooza last year.

I'm surprised more people in the media aren't talking about the "convenient timeline" for Sandusky's 1999 retirement that the author of this article addresses. When this story broke over the weekend the first thing that I thought of was the '99 Michigan/Penn State game and Sandusky's farewell tour with the Lavar Arrington/Courtney Brown led defense. I remember the retirement being addressed by the Musburger/Danielson crew. Even in 1999 nobody really had an explanation why Sandusky, then only 55 and with arguably his most talented defense ever, was retiring. Pretty obvious why now.

Great post. I've come to believe over the last several years that the best head coaches are more CEO types than X's and O's gurus. Obviously, these skils are not mutually exclusive, but IME managment skills are far more important than technical skills when it comes to being a head coach. This is an interesting parallel between sports & business. The same reason certain head coaches can be successful even as the game changes around them (Paterno, Bowden, Holtz) is why career CEO's can bounce from compnay to company and turn them around. On the flipside you can examine X's & O's guys who climb the ranks only to fail when they reach "the top", most likely because of their lack of managment & people skills (RR & Morninwheg come to mind).

|5 years 31 weeks ago||Haven't told this story in a||
Haven't told this story in a while, but what the hell...
Fall 2002 was my last semester before graduating. A buddy of mine had recently graduated taken a job in Ft Wayne, so a few other guys and I drove down there the Friday before the ND game. The plan was to party in FW on Friday night and make the trek to South Bend first thing Saturday morning. I didn't have a ticket in hand, but I had a little bit of cash flow because of a student loan check I had just landed. I think I went down there with $150 cash, which in relative terms seemed like 5 grand. Michigan was ranked in the top 10 and 2-0 after rolling Western and Brabbs' game winning FG against top 10 Washington.
My friend was living in this apartment community where there were probably about 30 identical buildings with 6 apartments units each. The community was walking distance from a bar called Pierre's which is probably where you'll end up too if you find yourself drinking in Fort Wayne, Indiana. After getting pretty sauced pregaming at his place we wandered over to Pierre's and proceeded to smack talk with ND fans throughout the night. End of the night rolls around and I'm walking out of the bar with this guy we used to call "Hi-roller" whereupon we find the other 3 guys in the process of getting arrested for a fight they had just gotten in with some ND guys. After trying to convince Hi-roller that he wasn't going to be able to convince the cops to let our buddies go he and I go our separate ways and I wander back to my buddies apartment community, while he goes on a solo mission to free our friends who are all sitting in the back of a police cruiser.
Next thing I know, I wake up on the floor outside the front door of my buddies apartment. It is probably about 9 or 10 am and a cop is tapping me with his foot telling me to wake up. Still pretty hazy about what happened the night before I explain that I must have gotten locked out of my buddies apartment and he tells me to knock on the door to have them let me in. I knock on the door and while I'm waiting for them to answer I realize that I'm not wearing any shoes. A little only lady answers the door at which point my credibility with the cop is gone and he takes me out to his car. In my drunken state I guess I couldn't figure out which building my buddy's apartment was in. While I sitting in this cops Bronco he looks up my drivers license info and discovers that I have a suspended license because of unpaid parking tickets in A2, and he tells me I'm going to jail if my buddy doesn't live somewhere in this complex. Ultimately, we find my buddies apartment and he lets me go. Fortunately, my buddies door is unlocked and I get into his apartment, but I don't have a cell phone to try and call the county jail so I have to walk, barefoot, to the campus of IUPU-FW to use a pay phone. FW county jail tells me my buddies are about to be released and will be out in about an hour. So I walk all the way back to my buddies apartment and manage to find his spare car keys and drive downtown to pick them up.
At this point it's almost noon. Kickoff is at 1:30 and we're at least an hour away from SB so things aren't looking good. While I'm waiting for my buddies to get processed and released, Hi-roller shows up at the jail as well. Turns out that he rode a shuttle bus into downtown to try and bail them out in the middle of the night. When the folks at the jail turned him away and told him to come back in the morning he proceeded to drunkenly wander around downtown Fort Wayne. After stumbling around downtown for a couple hours the shuttle bus driver sees him around 4am and tells him he's going to get robbed by some crackhead if he stays out all night and offers to let him crash on his couch.
By the time all is said and done, we get back to the apartment about 10 minutes before kickoff. Michigan plays a crap game and loses to a ND team that they should have beaten handily. The thing I remember most about this part in the '02 season was that Marlin Jackson was supposed to be the next Woodson. After the game we forego the second night of drinking and just drive back to Ann Arbor less than 24 hours before arriving in Indiana, in which time as a group we received 3 disorderly conduct tickets, 3 nights in jail, lost one pair of shoes (which I assume were stolen off my feet while I was passed out), and God only knows what happened with hi-roller at the bus drivers house. Eventually I made it to game in SB, when we spanked them in '06.
Cool Story Bro!
