“The player development is the main thing I like (about Michigan),” Williams said. “You can see that they develop their players. They get them in the gym and they work them hard. And their hard work pays off.”

I understand the logistics behind getting these made into t-shirts (on time) would be a nightmare, but either would be about the coolest thing one could wear to the game tonight.
|18 weeks 1 day ago||Well said.||
I've often fantasized about how I'd handle my recruitment if I were a 5-star bluechip. It always ends with me saying something like "I'll commit to you, Michigan, but don't waste anymore time on me. Recruit other guys, I'll be there in the fall."
|18 weeks 2 days ago||I love that he actually put stuff like||
"Three Fiesta Bowl Championships/One Rose Bowl Championship/One Sugar Bowl Championship."
I won't even go into how the "One Sugar Bowl Championship" is actually zero Sugar Bowl Championships per the NCAA. Entries like that just look so out of place and silly when applying to be the president of a university. Also, I'm pretty sure you aren't supposed to use backslashes when applying for a job that prestigious.
|19 weeks 3 days ago||Never seen that Goro picture of him.||
That's awesome. I bet the arm with the watch is his "power" arm.
|20 weeks 1 day ago||I agree.||
I think this season has totally worn on Izzo. Not just whats wrong with MSU, but what's going well for Michigan. Izzo is still an excellent coach, and I will never look at MSU's tourney draw and say "well, we know they won't get past ____."
But this season, he keeps hearing how great Coach Beilein is and how good (and young) our hoops program is. I'm sure he's not too excited to think about next year either when he looks down his bench trying to guess which "weird kid" is going to start next year.
He isn't #1 in our state any more. He knows this. It's killing him.
|20 weeks 1 day ago||Well if you're at the bar,||
you may want to go with "assy in lassy" instead. Some chicks are really proud of their buns.
|20 weeks 1 day ago||It blows my mind how Izzo gets the "classy guy"||
title from the media. If he wins, he's somewhat classy. But if he loses, he whines, makes excuses, and now apparently yells at women.
Putting the "assy" in classy, I guess.

HELL YES, BIG TEN CHAMPS!!!
|22 weeks 13 hours ago||I've heard this from multiple people.||
You can be tough and "hard edged" but still be respectful towards other people. Not a lot of people, let alone coaches, can pull this off. But it appears coach B does. Impossible not to love that guy.

I feel like one could also say that Michigan vs Ohio State at the end of November is just a regular season game. While technically correct, that description is clearly lacking.
|23 weeks 4 days ago||Agree.||
I have always wished that would be changed to "go blue." Saying something supportive is never out of place.
|23 weeks 5 days ago||How do we haze this guy?||
Since he's Mr. Falk's successor, do we, like, not pay attention to him for a couple decades? Wait until he's had to secure/protect/present a rivalry trophy multiple times? Wait until our guys require essential halftime equipment changes that tangibly increase our chances to win?
|24 weeks 3 days ago||This is the most insightful post||
I've read on this situation.
|24 weeks 5 days ago||This is a tough call, IMO||
The biggest problem, is that this is public. This feels unfair to MM. On the other hand, I wouldn't want my kid to go anywhere that I felt wouldn't meet his/her academic needs either. I hate ND, but I would never stop my kid from going there, as it is an excellent institution. With what we are hearing about MSU, however, I would probably dig my heels in on this as well.
|25 weeks 2 hours ago||So what happens if Seattle lost?||

|26 weeks 2 days ago||Agree||
Seems pretty silly to blame the fans for MSUs success over the past 15-20 years. I was thinking it was more secondary to the implosion of our program brought on by egregious violations of NCAA rules committed by our players/coaches. That plus Izzo being an excellent coach taking advantage of the opening provided.

|28 weeks 4 hours ago||I actually agree with "Heisman talk."||
I don't care if DG wins a Heisman, and I would actually imagine he doesn't either. But despite the issues we had offensively, he showed that he can be an elite QB. Add in the fact that we have an OC now with a better track record at developing QBs and I don't think it's a stretch to say he could make some noise for the Heisman.
|28 weeks 1 day ago||Maybe.||
But it seemed to me that he was either unwilling or incapable of making in-game adjustments. He proved this during the MSU, Nebraska, and PSU games in particular.
IMO, coaches at this level should be able to make in-game adjustments (with relative ease) and consistently obtain the maximum productivity from the talent they have. I don't think Borges was able to do either.
The oline was a disaster most of the season, and part of that was definitely not Al's fault. But I think every offense has a deficiency that has to be overcome. That's one of the "minigames" the coordinators have to deal with at this level. That said, I agree with the general sentiment in this thread and hope he does well for himself. So, I hope he doesn't go to ND, so that I can pull for him to be successful.
|28 weeks 4 days ago||Great post||
What I find interesting, is that coaches are usually only considered "loyal" when it comes to their staff. But if Coach Hoke believes what he says about Michigan, and I truly think he does, his loyalty would more likely be towards this program. This program is a symbol. Something that millions of people are emotionally and financially tied to. Firing Borges, although obviously difficult, would be superseded by the loyalty Hoke has to Michigan.
|28 weeks 4 days ago||No||
It means we don't LOSE in the national title game for hoops.
|28 weeks 6 days ago||I respectfully disagree.||
I think Countess is definitely a playmaker. I also think Ramon Taylor is actually pretty good, and could make the jump next year. IMO, there may be a few more that could cross that threshold as well.
I totally agree with you that it is very unlikely that 2014 will be the return of the 2006 defense. But besides '06, I think it will be the best defense we've had in quite a while.
Despite ending the season in a poor fashion, I still have a high degree of faith in Mattison. But as I think many of us are feeling for next year, he/Borges/the coaches in general will really be the "difference makers" as to whether or not 2014 is a successful season.
|29 weeks 3 days ago||Don't know what the kid did,||

Resources are finite. Everytime a regional rival does well, it potentially deprives us of the resources we want. This isn't sour grapes. Right now, and for as long as that staff is in EL, MSU is for real. IMO, pulling for MSU is loosing sight of the war. They aren't to be taken lightly. They aren't li'l bro. They are a team that has beat us 5 out of 6, are in our backyard, and won't ever give up against us. A win tomorrow helps them in recruiting. Right now, that is the only place we have been beating them.
Go Cardinal. Go Blue.

|39 weeks 1 day ago||Love the optimism,||

|41 weeks 1 day ago||I'm holding my grade for now.||
I agree that the last 4 games have been concerning. However, how/if we change our ideology following this game will certainly influence my grade.
In 2011, after the Iowa loss, we stopped trying to force manball and let Denard be Denard.
In both cases, I felt as though it represent a needed, but likely philosophically uncomfortable change by the staff.
I am cautiously optimistic that we'll see a similar type of change after last night and we'll stop regressing as a team.

3. 2002 Purdue. About 4 days prior to that game, I broke up with a long-term girlfriend who was very uncool about my football addiction. I remember waking up on that Thursday and realizing how nobody was going to try to stop me from going. Understanding that you are now "free" is pretty damn great.

I used to have a recurring nightmare that I would awaken from a coma to find out that I had missed the Michigan football season. I would yell at the nurses and doctors to leave me alone. Then, I would have a friend bring me all the games on tape so that I could watch them one at a time in sequential order. My worry now is that I awaken from a coma to find out the medical staff got me up just in time for the week preceding that game.
|46 weeks 6 hours ago||I remember looking up Gerg's "stats" for his last||

|46 weeks 5 days ago||And shortly following that was a||
"Houston's Better" chant. Because Houston actually scored a FG on us. That was awesome.
|47 weeks 1 day ago||Agreed. It's a positive feedback loop.||
If you are recruiting well, you can afford to play the freshman. Playing true freshman (who deserve to be on the field) helps you recruit better.
|48 weeks 1 day ago||So good.||
I went to Michigan for undergrad and Central for grad school. Of course, goes without saying, I'm hoping Michigan rolls on Saturday & I don't want a close game. As much as I like the idea of Michigan curbstomping everybody they play, I'm always in the "respect your opponent" camp. Probably a little more for CMU than I would for most other schools. As such, I really enjoy this wallpaper. I mean, I enjoy all your entries, but this one feels perfect. Well done.
|50 weeks 5 days ago||Agree||
You lose a "pipeline" school when you are not genuine with a recruit or string him along. That certainly isn't the case here.
It's all good. This is a really good situation for both Cass and MSU. In the long run, I don't see this as being a big concern for Michigan going forward with re: to the recruitment of Cass Tech.
|51 weeks 3 days ago||Vodka and Gatorade||

|51 weeks 6 days ago||I agree.||
I'm old (35) and could easily say that personally, I do not want to go to a night game. But they are obviously good for recruiting and TV, so it's all good. I'll go, be happy and realize that as a parent and spouse, my family is going to get kinda dicked the next day with an inattentive meat sack.
But we should never, ever play MSU at night. That is inviting truly bad things to happen.
I thought last year Air Force would have been a great UTL game. I mean, you aren't going to get involved in shenanigans with a crowd like that unless you deserve it. But, I know we aren't going to play Air Force every year.
I don't know what the answer is, but it's not MSU.
|1 year 4 days ago||Certainly could be a "surprise factor."||
But, I think what counters and trumps the surprise factor is the fact that up until about 11pm the previous Saturday, Gardner was a WR. I know he played the position in high school, but for over 6 months, he was studying and practicing as a WR.
I rewatched the Minnesota game this past weekend. Gardner looked pretty lost in the beginning of that game. That is absolutely not a knock on the guy, because most athletes could not have done what he did. You could actually see his handle on the position return during the course of that game. So, in his first 5 games after playing at WR (and at a high level too), Gardner had this streak.
I think of how sometimes guys really struggle with transitions to just a different spot on the same offensive/defensive line. But, since little nuances specific to each position on the lines exist, that makes sense. What Gardner did does not make sense. That kind of productivity without the focused practice and studying for the QB position is absolutely incredible.
I'm not going to hold him to an unreasonable standard. But, after what he was able to accomplish with so little preparation last season, I feel their is literally no cap on what this guy can do.

|1 year 3 weeks ago||Awesome post||
But I have to disagree with you on "outside of football, he's a perfectly respectable guy." Of course, I don't have any facts, but if any of the coed rumors are true from Florida, he's a real sack of crap as a person. I also remember reading a collection of tweets from his daughter prior to accepting the OSU job and they were all along the lines of "he promised us no more football."
|1 year 6 weeks ago||Wife and daughter are making me breakfast.||
Later we will be going to see the movie "Epic" in 3-D. Watching cool kids movies is a good perk of being a dad. I will likely be experiencing one of the best perks of fatherhood later in the evening when the kiddo is all gorked out on popcorn and glucose. That would be impromptu songs about things like armpits and stinky butts with an oscillation of singing voice between choir and heavy metal.
|1 year 7 weeks ago||Great points||
For me, with the constant barrage of grief I take from the large number of Spartan in-laws, the win vs MSU really helped bring me close to a sense of closure. Which I understand is a stupid thing to say. Not because I'm talking about Staee, but "closure", in and of itself, is complete. But as you're saying, LSA, it's our trajectory that creates the sense of comfort for what the program is doing. We're back and we aren't going anywhere for a long time. Even when we lose, we seem to be getting better, IMO.
But as many of you have said, it's the B1G title and Rose Bowl. I'll probably get a little emotional the next time I see us run out on the field in Pasadena. Hopefully that will be this season.
|1 year 10 weeks ago||Agreed. What I find very frustrating is when Michigan||
fans say something to the effect of "yeah, but despite the officiating, Louisville made the big plays down the stretch and we didn't." Wrong. We did make plays down the stretch. Our unanimous player of the year made a legendary play at a critical point in the game but it was taken away by the officials. So many bad calls in that game. If we get just a few of those to go our way, I really think things would have turned out different for us.
As an intentional method of getting past this game, every time I think about it and get frustrated, I think about what we have to look forward to this fall. We're back in football, and things are about to start getting really good again.

|1 year 18 weeks ago||Should they get a #4 seed?||
I mean, recordwise it's an easy answer. Michigan wouldn't deserve a 3 seed. But I think Minnesota, or any other #1 seed, deserves not to have to face Michigan in the first round. I guess in the hockey tournament, you don't have any bad teams. I've just been thinking over the past couple days how frustrated I'd be if we had to play a North Dakota or BC in the first round if the situation was reversed.
Either way, not our problem this year. Just win today and we'll have fun finding out what happens.
|1 year 18 weeks ago||I try not to follow any future Michigan athletes for that reason||
Seriously, what if you even "favorite" one of their tweets? They would get an email from Twitter with your name and digital thumbs up. Is that considered contact? Doubt it, but not worth it.
|1 year 19 weeks ago||I was thinking the same thing.||
I don't know if there's a decent "backstory game" every year because that's what you'll get when you randomly throw opponents together 30+ times, or if it's by design. I guess whatever the selection committee says, I'll believe the opposite because I don't trust the NCAA.
I think we end up as a 3 seed in Auburn Hills. Fingers crossed.
|1 year 19 weeks ago||I think the score may be a little lower,||

As far as "grilled cheese" variant, I heart all things that include cheese regardless of temperature. There really is no wrong way to consume cheese. I guess the only way to make it better is to include a meat with it.
|1 year 22 weeks ago||Agreed.||
He is really classy, but only if he wins.
|1 year 22 weeks ago||Still would be considered "New Money"||
Your rebutal of 3 conference titles in 20 years kinda helps prove the point. Prior to Heathcote, they had nothing. They want to compare themselves to the traditional elite in both hoops and football, but it's garbage. You can't claim to be a historical team with no national presence prior to 30-35 years ago (and even though Heathcote made the tourney and was even a one seed once, they weren't Duke, Kansas, UCLA or anyone else "historic" from the early 80's to the middle 90's). I hear the argument all the time from Sparty fans that their basketball is like our football. But, they aren't anywhere near the top 5 in wins, winning percentage, national titles, tournament appearances or even (all-time) conference titles.
Their claim to fame is the decade from 1999-2009 where they won a bunch of tournament games, a national title and like 5 Final Fours. UCLA had a decade where they won 10 national titles.
Don't get me wrong, they have an impressive program and something to be proud of, but (respectfully) get outta here with "historic."

|1 year 25 weeks ago||Yeah, I actually thought that the game||
was pretty fairly officiated. I mean, as good as we can expect to get playing in a road game in this conference.
|1 year 25 weeks ago||You have totally nailed it.||
I hadn't really thought of it that way, but you are right. The BTN is the tail wagging the dog in a lot of ways. Adding Maryland and Rutgers only makes sense if you actually generate interest in those regions. No question Michigan/OSU/Penn State will always increase interest and TV ratings when compared to other schools that aren't as polarizing.
|1 year 25 weeks ago||Hearing that he's played for only a few years||

Although I will never tire of the Upton gifs, it is annoying when they are inserted into a thread that isn't labeled "NSFW." I mean, I know that's the risk any time I'm on a blog site, so I'm not a victim here. It blows my mind how frequently someone happens to walk by me at work when something like that shows up. Meh, I guess being known as the "Upton perv" at work isn't all that bad.
"Cool story bro" is definitely overused. If the frequency was cut down about 90-95%, it may start being funny again.

|1 year 27 weeks ago||I hate the home court bias.||
In the end, it's a wash. I don't think any team (at least in our conference) benefits more so than others, so every time we lose a close game because of it, I feel confident that we'll get the makeup when the game comes back to Ann Arbor. But I think it weakens the validity of the event itself. It feels like it has a "part show" quality to it.
|1 year 27 weeks ago||I agree,||

'Bama (Miami), defending national champion and everyone's pick to repeat. Possibly complacent, but we'll see.
ND (OSU), great defense with not-so-great offense. Got pretty lucky to win some of their games and easily could have lost several of them.
I have evolved in the last decade, so if ND pulls an OSU and surprises everyone, I won't visit catatonia like a I did in Jan of '03.
Clearly the difference with the "defending national champion" in this analogy is coaching. But I am definitely not going to count ND out in this game until they are actually out.
|1 year 29 weeks ago||I love his attitude in that.||
It seems like it's excitement and confidence without being a dick. Awesome.
|1 year 29 weeks ago||I'm actually hoping they have that||
exact uniform distribution in the starting five. Two blue uniforms, two white and one maize.
Suck on that, Oregon! /s
|1 year 29 weeks ago||Agree.||
I am not ready to be happy, or even neutral, for PSU in any way. I don't know when/if I will. I understand that the scholarship/bowl restrictions are going to crush PSU over the next decade, but I want that descent to happen faster.
|1 year 29 weeks ago||I think our team is mentally tough.||
I know that's kind of a trite thing to say, but for some reason, I think it's actually going to have more of an impact on today's game than usual. We win an ugly, close game that comes down to making a big stop late in the fourth.
Michigan - 20
|1 year 29 weeks ago||Exactly.||
I hope now they will stop with the "will play anyone" meme. Because you won't, ND. You broke a contract to get out of playing a team that had beat you 3 years in a row at that point.
|1 year 31 weeks ago||College girls.||
I mean, obviously all the football stuff. But what 17-18 year old wouldn't want to come to college as soon as possible for all the obvious social reasons as well?
|1 year 31 weeks ago||89-60 Michigan wins||
89-60 Michigan wins
|1 year 31 weeks ago||I think this is a pretty big part of it.||
I also think it's a lot more of a gray area than people want to admit. If a kid is working hard in the flimroom and in practice, it's good for a team as a whole that he's rewarded and sees the field. Also, based on maturity, it seems reasonable that a player may benefit greatly from even limited playing time.
We need WRs to step up next year pretty bad. I would imagine Darboh is much better prepared for that now after getting his feet wet.
|1 year 31 weeks ago||Yep, me too.||
I had been admitted to the hospital with pneumonia for 4 days and discharged about a week before I got my letter. I tried to yell, but couln't make enough noise because my lungs and throat still felt all messed up. So I grabbed a rock and threw it at my dad's metal mailbox. I felt the moment deserved some degree of cacophony.
|1 year 32 weeks ago||Yeah, this really stinks.||
I am not doubting that the punishment is the right call. I just wish for Floyd's sake, he wasn't involved in something that required this kind of punishment. As much heat as that guy has taken in the past several years, he had a really good season. It would have been nice to see him have one last solid game.
|1 year 32 weeks ago||I am happy for RR||
and wish him well, but yo, I am definitely not going to miss watching our defense play like that.
|1 year 33 weeks ago||I figured it wouldn't, but he's my buddy so I||
wanted to try to help him out. I did intentionally wait for the lull between OSU and bowl game to post it.
|1 year 33 weeks ago||I always saw Denard as the "first person to||

|1 year 34 weeks ago||For the record, I have never been||
an mgopolice officer when it comes to: syntax, grammar, or "OT." But Hard Gay, my man, BG is never OT. If there is a thread generated tomorrow discussing his toots or BMs, it's still not OT. Because it's BG.
|1 year 34 weeks ago||Yeah, last year this day was awesome*.||
We had a rooting interest in just about every game for Michigan to squeak into the BCS. Nothing to do today besides wait for tomorrow.
*edit: As "awesome" as a day can be when our conference is holding it's championship game and we are not in it.
|1 year 34 weeks ago||Agreed, but this is certainly a concerning start.||
You can't play your way in to the tournament before January, but you can come close to playing your way out.
I'm not going to panic yet, but again, this start is definitely concerning.
|1 year 35 weeks ago||I wish I had a better answer than||
I am a highly functioning alcoholic. I never post on this board unless I double/triple check my work. My daughter watched the first 25 minutes of "The Return of Nanny Mcphee" or "Nanny Mcphee Returns, the Return of Nanny McPhee" or whatever it's called while I typed up my initial post. You can question anything I do/post on this board, and that's cool. But I assure you, I am not sober right now.
|1 year 35 weeks ago||Agreed.||
Waiting for my buddies to show up and can't stop pacing. I keep finding myself in a different room in my house wondering "what was I going to do?" Can't wait for this game. Beat Ohio.
|1 year 35 weeks ago||"It's about good versus evil||
"It's about good versus evil and right versus wrong."
Yep, that sums it up. We play a lot of schools that we don't like and the feeling is mutual. But when we play Ohio, it really does have the feel of something more than just a game. Our guys aren't playing just for us or the university. For this game, they are a symbol. They are a representation of what is right and good. Not just because we are Michigan. But because they are Ohio. The ideology they perpetuate is a blight and darkness on sports and education. Because we are playing them today, we are good. There is no other way to define the opponent of evil.
|1 year 35 weeks ago||Pretty much sums up how I'm feeling.||
I loaded the bike in the back of our van this morning because my family and I have a tradition of exercise before we consume mass calories. While loading it, I found a new Lego set that the wife and kiddo purchased for a family we've adopted through the our kid's school. When I found out what it was for, I got a little teary eyed realizing how fortunate we are.
Thankful for: family, friends, safety, comfort, our amazing student athletes that represent our school so well, and mgoblog.
In all seriousness, this is the best online community I've ever heard of/been a part of. I hope you all have a great holiday. Beat Ohio.
|1 year 36 weeks ago||I actually read most of that.||
I gotta say, with the language that young man used, fuck Jerry Kill. I know it's just one side of the story. But it's hard to believe that kid (after reading what he had to say) is some meathead who has a problem with "the state of things" in the Minnesota program.
I will probably always have the default setting of siding with the player in situations like this. I mean, on one hand, who cares? Right? It's just football. But on the other hand, it's everything 18-21 year olds absolutely cherish when they are capable of playing for a D1 program.
To be fair, fuck anyone who takes that away from a kid. And yes, to me, 18-21 year olds are respectfully "kids."
|1 year 36 weeks ago||And much,||
much cooler apparel for us to buy.
|1 year 36 weeks ago||Denard probably doesn't need it,||
but I do. I would imagine I'm not the only one who feels this way. Denard isn't just a special football player, he's a special kid. I would feel so sad if I didn't get the chance to give him one more vociferous cheer following a play.
|1 year 36 weeks ago||Well done.||
I find it hard not to scoff at their "6" national titles. In 1957, Auburn won the AP poll, Ohio State won the UPI poll. MSU claims a national title from that year though. Historically, lots of different organizations gave away the title of "National Champion."
Michigan could claim national championships (but don't) from: 1985 (Matthews, Sagarin), 1973 (National Championship Foundation), and 1964 (Dunkel).
In 1955, MSU claims another national title from Boand despite Oklahoma having the distinction of "National Champion" given to them by: AP, Berryman, Billingsley, DeVold, Dunkel, Football Research, FW, Helms, INS, Litkenhous, National Championship Foundation, Poling, Sagarin, UPI, Williamson.
I'm too tired to look up the rest of their national titles, but I'm pretty sure I read once that they really only have 2 legitimate national titles in football.
|1 year 37 weeks ago||I love how traditions can evolve over time.||
When I was a student, I would get to the stadium way too early and grab a free program. I would hurriedly get to my seat and then wait. For about 75 minutes. My buddies would meet up with me much later, so I would pass the time stressing out over the game and reading "Punt/Counterpunt."
Over a decade later, things have certainly mellowed out for me. I don't get to the stadium 90 minutes early and I certainly don't sit wringing my hands over the possible outcome. Now the waiting I do on Saturady morning is for everyone to wake up so that I can play Barbies, take the dog for a run and figure out which house I'm driving to after the game (in-laws, my house, her grandparents). But while I wait, I once again have my "Punt/Counterpunt." Awesome.
|1 year 37 weeks ago||From what I could tell,||
he just ended up being a "tweener" kinda player. Not agile enough to be a wideout, but not able to get thick enough while still maintaining his athleticism to be an impact at TE.
|1 year 37 weeks ago||He was.||
He was also initially a top 3 overall kid in the state of Florida (that Florida) before he moved up here for senior year in high school. I followed his recruitment pretty closely. He's a great kid. I understand his move and wish him well.

obsession. Mine is playing a fantasy card game designed for 13 year olds. I can play it online any hour of the day. When the family leaves, I get to go nuts and when I wake up the next day, I'm not hung over.
If that doesn't work, just go back to porn. It's actually quite sustainable.
|1 year 39 weeks ago||I agree with the overall sentiment.||
I really think Fitz's involvement in our rush offense "gets healthy" in this game. I would be kinda surprised if he ran for under 100 yards in this one. To be honest, I think he and Denard each run for over 100.
I am worried about our non-Funchesses catching the ball. I think we win a close one, like 34-31 with our D making a couple of big 4th quarter stops.
|1 year 39 weeks ago||I agree, interesting numbers.||
Since this is a thread titled "QB Winning Percentage," I feel the need to interject a stat I find amazing. Only 4 times in the history of Michigan football have the Wolverines beat all four of their rivals in one season (OSU, ND, MSU and Minn).
John Navarre was the last Michigan QB to hit 100% wins against that lineup (2003).
What can I say, I have always had a soft spot in my heart for our senior QBs.
|1 year 39 weeks ago||I have 3 mgoshirts.||
I have worn the "I heart heart" and "Space, bitches" t-shirts probably 30+ times combined. Not one comment from a stranger. The day of the 'bama game, I wore the photobomb shirt to the M-den in Livonia and had 3 strangers verbally upvote it. What can I say, there's something enchanting about that hair and those eyes will hypotize you.
|1 year 40 weeks ago||I'm not going to start anything,||
but I ain't taking shit either.
Although I truly enjoy the atmosphere at Michigan Stadium, I feel like people get too much leeway to be dicks. Not today, brahs.
|1 year 41 weeks ago||I disagree with you a little on that.||
Maybe after he leaves Michigan he'll return one. I mean, eventually he'll probably get there. But yeah, no way in hell he returns one while wearing a winged helmet. Certainly there's no chance he returns one at a critical point in a big game.
|1 year 41 weeks ago||I feel like most teams||
in college football has a healthy amount of good kids on their squad. I have felt for years and years, however, that Michigan truly does have an inordinate amount associated with their program. This is yet another great example.
|1 year 42 weeks ago||Agreed, but unfortunately,||
Dantonio has been able to get them to play essentially their best games of each season against us. Nothing that happens this week from either squad will have me feeling great about that game. However, after watching our game yesterday, I do feel much better.
|1 year 42 weeks ago||I can't stop laughing.||
It looks like the Denard photo appeared first. Members of the team thought it was so great, they decided to put their uniforms on for fun and take pictures of each other making the funniest poses to best utilize the picture of Denard. Clearly, Hagerup was the winner of that contest.
|1 year 42 weeks ago||Agree completely.||
Always nice to know how the rest of the country sees us, but our ranking is completely irrelevant for the rest of the year. No at-large BCS, no NT game. Win our next 3 games, and it will be pretty tough not to make it to the B1G Championship.
Only goal right now is Pasadena. Based on how we looked yesterday, I really think we're the (eligible) team to beat right now.
|1 year 42 weeks ago||Come on, dude.||
You know that if it was our rivalry with IU, we'd want that protected too. I mean, who wouldn't want that game protected.
|1 year 42 weeks ago||This is one of those great responses||
that is made even better if you imagine the poster's avatar as the one saying the phrase.
|1 year 43 weeks ago||I've read all your posts in this||
thread and I think you have a great insight in to this situation. I understand the idea behind the tape exchange, and I understand the idea behind the "honor system" involved. I find this situation very ironic, however, as there are also "gentlemen's agreements/honor system" issues with:
It's funny that you have a program willing to do so many things to gain a competitive advantage by bending/breaking written and unwritten rules, but cries foul when an opponent tries to do the same thing.
|1 year 43 weeks ago||My wife is a Spartan grad and is going to the OSU game||
tomorrow with her dad. The day is going to have an ironic "the circle is now complete" feel to it.
So, it will be Jungle Java/putt-putt, toy store, pizza, movie rental, maybe a park and some arts and crafts. I will probably have the game on just to point out examples of bad sportsmanship to my daughter. When putting her to bed, we will have conversations about how many of the players on MSU/OSU need to be put in timeout. I will also add how Denard Robinson never needs to be put in timeout because he's awesome.
|1 year 43 weeks ago||Exactly.||
Remember how dumb we all thought Dantonio was when he refused to route for Michigan at the end of the '10 season? We beat OSU that day and MSU goes to the Rose Bowl (with a win of their own).
Pulling for MSU this Saturday is the same thing. OSU is absolutely irrelevant this year when it comes to our bowl/Big Ten title aspirations. If they go 11-0 or 4-7 going into their game with us, who cares. We aren't getting an at-large BCS game this year, so we don't need to care about style points. So, the Rose Bowl is the only thing that matters and we have to get to the Big Ten Title game to get there. The biggest competition in our way is MSU. Every loss they get from now on makes our road to Pasadena that much easier.
|1 year 44 weeks ago||You can keep your one TD Jesus.||
We've got TOUssaint(s).
I realize that would give the incorrect pronunciation of his last name, but for this one night, it's probably cool.
|1 year 44 weeks ago||"Weakest secondary he'll face all year."||
I agree with that and remain optimistic for the game as a result. No doubt in my mind, Denard has improved as a passer from the last several seasons. Add that to the fact the AB has a desire to throw the ball when things get tight (see MSU game from last year) and mismatch nightmares Funchess/DG and you've got a recipe for success.
|1 year 44 weeks ago||Your Denard-O-Lantern||
wins the internet. I am totally going to attempt doing that later this fall. Strong work.
|1 year 45 weeks ago||I really love this idea for||
all your data points are belong to us.
I have been a season ticket holder for a few years but did just fine "scavenging" for about 6 years following undergrad. I went to every home game one way or another. Contemplating giving them up and just scavenging again. The only problem is no guarantee for the big games. But for the money I would save off the top for not having to donate to priority seating plus the savings for games like this, I think I should probably pull the trigger by not pulling the trigger next year. I will be really interested to see how all this data shakes out.
|1 year 45 weeks ago||I would love to have one of those shirts, but I traded it||
for a garden plot. For only $75, I have the opportunity to name one of the garden plots with my family. I think my daughter wants something like "we love you Tae, and we love Scooby Doo, and Pop Rocks and books." Although I think that is great, I was leaning towards something more like "mgogarden."
I am really proud of Tae for what he is doing and I am really mgoproud of our little corner of the blogosphere for collectively kickstarting the kickstarter.
|1 year 45 weeks ago||What an amazing young man.||
Seriously. I have worked in oncology for over 8 years as a healthcare practitioner. I have seen more than a few cases where someone is diagnosed with cancer and the spouse leaves them because they can't handle going through the process.
Te'o obviously could have left at any time and focused more on football, having fun, school, whatever. It speaks volumes of his character that he supported her through the process.
I hope whenever it is that he returns, he has a career day as he will most certainly be playing in honor of those two women.
|1 year 46 weeks ago||Great points by both of you||
I keep hearing how Borges is really stubborn. I'm not so sure I agree with that. Certainly he has a default setting with a list of tendencies, as does every coach. I am pretty sure "run a shit ton with Denard just for the sake of running him" is not one of them. Every OC, when running the ball, wants to be effective doing so. The most logical progression of that idea would be to get production from your RB, so as to leave as many avenues open for gaining yards. I mean, that's why a running QB in general is so damn hard to defend against. You have to account for both the RB and the QB in the run game. However, seeing how ineffective Fitz was yesterday (for whatever reason), he kept using what was working during that game.
Moving forward, we probably are going to have tough sledding if we can't run with Fitz/Rawls/Smith. But for the game yesterday, I am glad he didn't use that as a crutch to keep insisting on "rock" in the game of rock, paper, scissors (referencing to a post from Brian several years ago discussing the perceived offensive philosophy of Carr).
He coached during the game, calling what was working. I will never have a problem with a coach wanting to win a certain way or thinking that a certain method has a better chance of success in the long run. What kills me is when coaches seemingly refuse to pay attention to what is happening in a particular game. Yesterday, Borges was not guilty of that IMO.
|1 year 46 weeks ago||After the game,||
Fred Jackson had the same assessment. Except Funchess is faster and has better hands than Johnson.
|1 year 46 weeks ago||Wow.||
I can't believe how much better I feel about the Countess injury* after reading all the optimism in this thread. I am not kidding. I was overtly depressed yesterday and it had nothing to do with 41-14. I was looking at the Countess loss as the worst possible scenario for our defense. It's not. It may be damn close, but we do have some guys that are going to get their chance now to compete and get better while helping this team win.
I do think that the loss of Countess will be tangibly noticable in several games, especially MSU. I think Maxwell is better than he showed on Friday (has a great skill set) and the loss of Blake will limit our ability to stuff the box and blitz.
My prediction for the season was 3-4 losses with a Rose Bowl birth. I figured we'd lose to 'bama and maybe even ND to start the season and likely drop at least one more along the way. I'll stick with that for now.
*feeling better from a selfish fan perspective. I still feel really bad for that kid. Hope he has a speedy recovery.
|1 year 46 weeks ago||I didn't realize that MSU||
chose not to play in a game of that magnitude. Alabama and Jerry Jones were probably pretty upset that MSU turned them down and went after us just to piss people off.
I guess MSU probably chose not to play the BCS last year as well, right?
At least MSU got to throw it's national relevance/clout around when the Big Ten got split in to divisions. Who wouldn't want IU to be their protected rival.
|1 year 46 weeks ago||I expect all of Michigan's rivals to laugh||
at what happened on Saturday night, but in private. I agree, it's just "boys being boys" to some degree, but they are still role models behaving poorly in public. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it, but I'd be pretty embarrassed if Michigan players did that. If they do that later this year, don't worry, I will be the first guy to say it's classless.
|1 year 46 weeks ago||I got pretty frustrated with that call||
because I feel like it went against the "spirit of the rule" of a ball being uncatchable.
Uncatchable should be defined as "not a chance." In this case it was more like "very unlikely."
IMO, "very unlikely" always deserves the flag.
|1 year 47 weeks ago||There was an LSU/Bama||
variant earlier this offseason. They spelled it "then" instead of in it's correct form above. What that tells me is that someone likely saw the first one, and thought the only problems with the shirt were that the teams and grammar were wrong.
|1 year 47 weeks ago||Stay at home.||
Of all the sporting events I have been to (Rose Bowl, multiple Stanley Cup clinching games, NBA finals, Minnesota '03, ALCS and almost every home Michigan game since 1997), none of it even comes close to how awesome it was to meet my kid for the first time on her birthday.
|1 year 47 weeks ago||You will find tickets very easily||
and you will be paying a lot less than face value for them as well. They will be everywhere, but outside the entrances to the stadium will be a concentrated number of people trying to sell them quickly and head in. If you want to buy them for as cheap as possible, wait until about 20-30 minutes prior to kick at one of these entrances. I've had to sell tix plenty of times for people in my group punking out. For a game like this, if I had extras, I would be pleased to get $50 or more for the pair.
|1 year 48 weeks ago||I agree with you.||
I have always felt as though there are several teams in each BCS conference (not named "The Big East") that can hover above conference criticism. In the absurdly small chance that we have 13-0: Michigan, Texas, USC and Florida/Alabama, then yes, conference "bite" will have a factor. But bottom line, if Michigan goes 13-0, I really don't think we have to worry about what else happens.
Secondly, ask yourselves, who is our competition for at-large BCS? I see MSU being more of a factor than BSU. I mean, well, I don't think FYS is ever going to get an actual at-large BCS bid. But they will more likely be more relevant than Boise at the end of the year.
That all being said, I think MSU rolls in this one. Don't get me wrong, I will take a shot of our super fancy tequila if BSU wins this game and I respect everything that they have done over the past decade or so. But asking any team to replace that many starters is unreasonable. I think BSU plays with heart, but gets worn down early in the second half. MSU 34-17.
|1 year 48 weeks ago||"Betterment of all mankind"||
The world lost a hero today, not just the US.
Hard to imagine what it must have been like. I spoke to a man who was an engineer at NASA at that time. The bounces of the first steps were not because of a lack of gravity. It was because the smartest minds in the world had decided one of two outcomes would occur. Either man lands on the moon and is safe and walks around and eventually pulls out golf clubs or he falls 100 meters or so into the moon itself. Those hops were a reflex. He wasn't sure if he was going to immediately be buried in to the center of space rock, or if he'd have the opportunity to take a second step. Words can't express how bad ass that man/crew was for taking that trip.
|1 year 48 weeks ago||I remember it the same way.||
2 for 1 scheduled before '94 (of course).
In 1997, The Sporting News had Colorado as their preseason number 1. Beating the crap out of them got us (#18 preseason, IIRC) some invaluable early-season national hype. To go one step further, that game is always the counter argument to the "we need more baby seals to club" scheduling debate. That game really set the tone for the season. Hopefully we get the same sorta catalyst next Saturday night.
|1 year 48 weeks ago||I was sitting in the opposite end zone, 4th row.||
So, when they kicked the "go ahead" field goal with a few minutes left, I got to watch the football harmlessly slide down the netting as it continued to slowly spin. Likewise, forever etched with crystal clarity into my memory.

even the brutality that is the "Michigan" locomotion/train cheer from homecoming games.

I truly think he's going to excel in Meyer's offense. I thought the kid played incredible for a true freshman in "The Game." I know he missed some passes, but the Ohio offense was an abortion for much of the season.
People will compare this transition to ours with RR. No comparison. They have a QB in year one who was meant to run this offense, and he's only a sophomore so no missed value in year 2.
That being said, we are still going to beat them this year.
|1 year 49 weeks ago||Although I think you pretty much nailed the analogy,||

against boise about a week after we announced our game with 'Bama. At the time, it felt like kind of a desperate move. Also, don't forget that this is the year they play at Central in their efforts to be "the true football program for the state." Whatever. Also a move that felt kinda forced.
|1 year 50 weeks ago||Although not as intimidating as Vandy's,||
I actually like the continuation of the "team number" type of branding. I would love it if the idea continued to grow to the extent where Monday Night Football intros went something like: "Charles Woodson, cornerback, teams 116-118*."

I know this is unpopular in these parts, but I really don't give a fuck if we beat OSU this year as long as we beat staee. Michigan/OSU will correct itself over time. But in re: to MSU, this shit needs to stop right now. I really don't think I have ever been so fired up over one particular game.

Two different times as I ran around the field yelling like a banshee. I hated everything about the conversations of "Yeah! . . . well what do you know?!?!" to my fellow Michigan fans.
But, we will always have Paris, as they say. No, the Twin Cities aren't Paris. But that beautiful Brown Jug is. I heart everything about it, and I thought we were going to lose it. But Nick Sheridan, you kept that bad boy where it belongs.

I think it's kinda ballsy, but necessary given the current dynamic of our team. The first reflex is to think "what if . . . " Well the truth is that Devin has a much better chance of getting hurt if he's playing WR than if he is backing up Denard. But, our best chance to win as a team is if he's on the field at wideout. I wish he didn't have to play WR. But I love that Devin is willing to make the switch and that the coaches are willing to take this kind of tactical risk.

her fundraising effort is truly remarkable. In a world that can be sometimes full of darkness, people like these are rays of light.
I have done fundraisers in the past, and the thing that makes you the happiest while doing them is getting more donations. So, I'm looking forward to getting home from work so that I can hop on her website and contribute to her charity.
|2 years 5 days ago||I am at work and can not fully sift through all the info||
but how many total scholarships are lost? Is it 90? 10-20-20-20-20. I keep reading 40 but that doesn't add up to me.
|2 years 1 week ago||Yeah, me too.||
I'm supposed to be getting 2 issues with the photo bomb t-shirt. I live something like 25 miles from Ann Arbor. I am not upset about the delay. I get that there will be growing pains with a venture like this. I was just starting to get concerned that somehow I fell through the cracks or something.
|2 years 5 weeks ago||I would actually be a little||
I would actually be a little surprised if he lasted more than 6 months. I understand that he will be protected to some degree, but I think he's going to be a lightning rod for "accidents."
|2 years 5 weeks ago||I'm a very big fan of both posts.||
It would take me 2 days to write a post as thorough and excellent as LSAClassOf2000 wrote. On the other hand, you very accurately described my feelings in a succinct nutshell.
|2 years 5 weeks ago||I agree with you.||
But to be fair, most of the parking situations in Ann Arbor call for a Will Campbell Hood Slide.
|2 years 6 weeks ago||I had an MGOvasectomy yesterday||
So, I have had frozen blueberries on my recently surgically assaulted blueberries while trying not to enjoy the Vicodin too much.
My urologist is a Michigan grad, so we actually talked about Michigan football while he did it.
It's funny, usually when I think about this football program, I get warm and tingly in the right places. Yesterday, I was trying to talk in between sharp stabs of discomfort at those very same parts.
|2 years 6 weeks ago||Agree||
If there ever was a time to use the phrase "boys will be boys," I think this is it. He deserves a penalty, which he got, which wont lead to a long term issue as long as he keeps his head on straight. Very reasonable, IMO.

That's what I want to see. I want the players to vote on who has "earned" the right to honor our former greats by wearing the number for only one game of the season. That puts less pressure on the current player and would make for an interesting side note for the elderly alumni who have come back to campus for a game. It would be the perfect combination of modernism and nostalgia to provide the coveted WOW factor.
|2 years 6 weeks ago||We will definitely want to hear how it went.||
Unfortunately, if you do get picked up and start throwing heat in the bigs, you'll have to tell all of us your real name. ANONYMITY LOST!!!! /s
You are a bad ass for doing all that training and going after your dream. Good luck!!!!
|2 years 7 weeks ago||As I am sure it is the same with most of you,||
my cheering interests in Michigan as a team supersede any individual player. I mean, obviously.
But if Denard Robinson were to actually win the Heisman Trophy, I can be certain that I would literally shed tears of pride and joy. I honestly feel that as Michigan fans, we have an inordinate amount of incredible character athletes wear the maize and blue. In my opinion, Denard Robinson is the most impressive example of that. I will always love that kid for how he represents himself and the university.
|2 years 7 weeks ago||Absolutely agree.||
Elegant and appropriate without making me angry to look at it. Very well done.
|2 years 7 weeks ago||"Nobody is due."||
That is easily the most succinct and valuable gambling advise I have read.
If a Star Wars knockoff was created with a gambling undertone, Yoda would say that all day to the Jedi/gambler in training. Well, probably more like "Due, nobody is."
I actually like Michigan -7 at Purdue. But, I also have some stupid penchant for taking road favorites.
|2 years 7 weeks ago||If you give me the opportunity to||
choose between a long snapper and pretty much any other position, I'll usually take the "any other position" when it comes to using a scholarship. Especially in June.
A blocked punt/bad snap can turn the tide of an entire game. Not as frequently occurring as most other plays, but probably only beaten by pick-6 and kick return for a TD as far as momentum swings.
This is not as bad as Purdue taking another QB. It's not sexy, but reasonable given our depth chart.
Scott, if you are reading this thread and are new to mgoblog, welcome and good luck. Any kind of negativity you are reading is only because we really haven't had a thing to complain about in approximately 7 months.
|2 years 10 weeks ago||I agree with what you are saying.||
I will definitely not get my hopes up, but I still recruit this (and any other highly coveted) kid until the final bell. Especially when in his "final two" prior to his verbal. 9 months is an eternity when you are in high school. Girlfriends, family situations, erosion of rapport with SC's coaching staff, etc.
|2 years 10 weeks ago||Cognitively Impaired.||
That's the phrase you were looking for instead of the term "retarded." I mean, come on, I'm not the PC police, but everybody knows you can't say "retarded."
Also of note, when checking with what is PC, you can't call a girl (edit - or guy) a "slut" anymore either. It's "sexual arts aficionado." I'm not making that up. http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Sexual+arts+aficionado
|2 years 11 weeks ago||My vacation begins this afternoon as well.||
Taking the wife and kiddo up north for a few days. Then next week, I'll be at home relaxing. Can't wait.
We went to Disney this past winter. It was the most fun I have ever had in my life. Enjoy the park and the fishing.
|2 years 11 weeks ago||I appreciate your insight||
and completely agree with you. I guess it helps to hear that sentiment repeated sometimes. I remember hearing an analogy once where the universe was compared to a river. If you a see a fork, try to swim to the branch that looks more interesting. If you see something on either bank that you find stimulating, there is nothing wrong with acting assertively to get closer. Just don't bother trying to swim upstream, the river is flowing in that direction for a reason.
|2 years 11 weeks ago||I feel like I finally understand Edward Rooney.||
In Ferris Bueller's Day Off, when he speaks with Sloane Peterson and says his little bit about "between grief and nothing . . . I'll take grief." I had always found that part odd, I mean, I'd prefer a neutral feeling over a negative one. But with this "all your negs are belong to me" thread, I can tell you're choosing feeling something over nothing. Whatever that something may be. As someone who is currently stuck in a rut of existential angst, I fully appreciate what you are doing.
FWIW, I agree with CRISPed. Go with cereal. Then at some point later today, you can go nuts with debaucherous intake and you'll have more endurance. The last thing you want to do is pass out before noon.
|2 years 13 weeks ago||You just made the Purdue logo pretty damn fantastic.||
I may actually buy a Purdue shirt now so that I can point it out to my buddies.
To be fair though, I'm not sure that is a white veiny monster. Looks more like the Purdue phallus of justice is covering a criminal in some form of righteousness.
|2 years 14 weeks ago||I am still frustrated.||
I wasn't in the band, but I have always felt as though they are the closest relative of the living entity that is the football team. Making the decision because of money, although probably the "right play" from an administrative standpoint, still seems very wrong to me.
I want to DB to look at our financial situation and be like "screw it, we're Michigan, we can swing it."
|2 years 14 weeks ago||Not to be a meathead,||
but fuck calc and calc II. I have never worked harder in my life for a B- and B. I didn't have a single class in grad school (top 25 for my profession) as hard as either of those two. Funny thing though, as emotionally scarred as my Michigan undergrad made me, I ended up graduating as "most outstanding graduate" as nominated by my grad faculty.
But people still wonder why I argue about the "Michigan Difference."
|2 years 14 weeks ago||Our offensive line will punch the dick off of every team||
We will have 2000+ rushing yards by guys not named "Denard Robinson."
|2 years 15 weeks ago||Very well said,||
but I would be more concerned over what influence a coach/team dynamic has over my son's personal character. It would be peer pressure at it's highest form. I remember how I was when I was 18 and I know that I could have been swayed to the "dark side" on some things if given an opportunity.
