Most college teams wearing Nike this season have the same ridiculous thing with the numbers on the back being way too high, right under the nameplate. That makes the whole thing look off. Plus the numbers and font on the lettering are way too small.

Excellent as usual. Something about this game reminded me of a game against Penn State in which Henne was injured and Ryan Mallett got the start. In this game Smith did what Mike Hart did in that one, carrying the offense. Smith doesn't have the talent Mike Hart did, but he's every bit the warrior and it's wonderful to see him dominating in his last home game. He will be missed.

Mone seemed to play a lot more in this game than any other. At one point I even wondered if Glasgow might be limited by some injury. The snap breakdown in UFR will tell the tale.

Ohio State's been doing that for years with the gold pants pin they get for beating Michigan. This year they will get de-pantsed.

I don't think this is an issue anymore, but back in the 70s Bo's teams often struggled on grass. I think the worst was the 71 Rose Bowl against Stanford. It had been raining before the game and the turf was coming up in big clumps. Stanford handled it much better and it contributed to their upset.

I've heard him say on a couple of occasions that he likes putting more things on film so opponents have to prepare for them. Losing the element of surprise is a factor I'd be concerned about if this staff wasn't so consistently good at coming up with wrinkles on top of wrinkles.

What a relief! Those defy all the trendy splashy stuff that's almost everywhere these days. As somebody said, many teams these days wear costumes, not uniforms. These are the real thing.

Robin Wright is a great reporter and writer, with many books under her belt. Her father was one of my dad's professors at Michigan law school in the 50s.

Reminds me of my all-time favorite Mgoblog lede. I think it was Ace who covered a high school game between Jake Butt's team and Taco Charlton's. The result:

Both my grandfathers graduated in 1924. One of them was on the faculty for 30 years as the men's counselor at the Health Department. My dad got three UM degrees before he ever moved out of his parents house. I have pictures of me at games when I was two, and I can recall watching the 71 and 72 OSU games on TV. But it was the 73 game when I was 13 that was the first Michigan game I remember attending, and after that epic I was hopelessly addicted. We were sitting in the end zone where Mike Lantry missed his field goal attempts. They sure looked good to me, but I was sitting next to a cousin who was smoking weed so I may not have been seeing straight.

They had to change the font because what else could they change? I'll reserve total judgment until I see these on players, but I hate to see the change. I've been a fan since the early 70s and every uniform change since 97 has been for the worse. Last year was the best since 96, if not 75. It looks like the numbers may be a bit smaller too, which I really hate. Maybe it won't be so bad…

There's fifth-year senior fullback Bobby Henderson, who hasn't played yet but probably will. He is the classic FB that Poggi and Hill are not, or at least were not last year.

Great post. I somehow managed to know a lot about Wallenberg without knowing he went to Michigan. He was one of the greats from that terrible period of history. His fate at the hands of the Soviets is worse than tragic; he deserved so much better.

The whole thing is brilliant and devastating, but this is the sentence that finally broke me… Into uncontrollable laughter: "A few years later we're fighting over the sanctity of waking up in vomit that may or may not be yours."

I loved watching Jamie Morris play. He was drafted I believe by the Redskins even though he was considered way too small for the NFL. (His brother Joe was a longtime New York Giant.) I remember one game late in the season when the Redskins had been eliminated from playoff. They decided to see what they had in Jamie and handed him the ball almost 40 times. Tough, tough kid.

Interesting that Hackett said he believed Gary was offered "incentives". Could he have been referring to Clemson? After a wow visit like that the natural tendency is to think it's another Treadwell to Ole Miss. But Gary and especially his mom don't seem like the kind of people who would succumb to the bagman. I really hope one day the whistle gets blown on all this stuff.

Great memories from 77. I remember watching the Marquette game, but I'd forgotten that Green was out and virtually everything else about it except Marquette's asinine uniforms. Those 76 and 77 teams were more fun to watch than any Michigan team ever, with the exception of the 2012 tournament bunch with McGary firing on all cylinders.

I can't help but think of a sign I saw on Monday Night Football some years back. The Vikings were replacing Warren Moon with Brad Johnson. The sign read YOU'VE SEEN OUR MOON, NOW TAKE A LOOK AT OUR JOHNSON. Dan Dierdorf came really close to full-blown cracking up.
|1 year 5 weeks ago||Jon Horford transferring was||
Jon Horford transferring was a symptom of a problem that seems to be affecting recruiting: this offense is perceived as deemphasizing big guys. An elite center is going to want an offense that posts him up, not limits him to pick and roll duty. Big bruisers in general will prefer an offense like MSU that emphasizes physical play and pounding the boards. I hope I'm wrong about this, as the NBA seems to be heading more the direction of the Michigan offense. But it's hard to believe there's nothing to this.
