That was awesome.  I hadn't…

That was awesome.  I hadn't seen it before and I definitely just watched that on a loop 50 times.  The best part was watching Steuber.  He's blocking, he's blocking, he's blocking, he's - Oh.  Hahahaha. Steuber just drops his arms and his stance and looks at the DE and was like wow, that escalated quickly.

Illini fans in Chicago are…

Illini fans in Chicago are absolutely convinced Michigan is their big rival.  They're really, really proud of their Muck Fichigan shirts.  It took me aback when I moved here years ago.  They don't respond well when you tell them it's news to me that we're rivals.  It's bizarre and it's a real thing.

Jones Day doesn't do…

Jones Day doesn't do anything for a negligible fee.   And certainly not like something like that.

No.  Given 1) that may not…

No.  Given 1) that may not have been the full quote from the principal - there could have been additional statements and context that we don't know about, and 2) we don't know all the facts here.  There's lots of potential explanations.  It's possible the principal is a a clueless jerk.  It's also possible the principal is looking out for the best interests of all his students - both the student who made the shirt and the girls who bullied/teased him.

Thanks.  How would you…

Thanks.  How would you describe his game?  From a lengthy (overly-zoomed-in) video of his game in January against LaMelo Ball's team, he looked very under control.

The new one is fine.  The

The new one is fine.  The problem with the new one is the JEJ one is awesome and everyone loves it.  Not sure they'll be able to top that one.

Great question re: Ward.

If I had to pick one recruit

If I had to pick one recruit that might commit this weekend it would be Singleton.  I don't think Najee Harris will announce until the dead period - that way no one can bother him.  Maybe DPJ pulls the trigger this weekend but if I had to put money on it I'd bet that he waits a little longer.

Nice post.  One thing I think

Nice post.  One thing I think Speight has benefited from this season is excellent field position.  The combination of our excellent defense and Peppers returning punts and kicks have given Wilton short fields to work with the vast majority of the time.  Per Football Outsiders, Michigan is #1 in the country in offensive starting field position.  (In case you were wondering, MSU is #112.)

I also think he's benefitting from a better running game than we had last year.  Regardless, he's getting the job done.  The touchdown to turnover ratio is my favorite stat.

90 surgeries?  Geez.  Go Blue

90 surgeries?  Geez.  Go Blue to him for being a warrior.

Makes sense.  He said he's

Makes sense.  He said he's excited because this will be his first time on an airplane.

Harbaugh just said he'd

Harbaugh just said he'd probably redshirt and that class is going really well for Walker.  That was free info, from the press conference going on right now.

The most important factor is The most important factor is for the team to keep winning. If the team has a special season then Peppers will have a real shot. Heisman is always more likely to go to a player on a good team. His play will take care of itself.
Tomahawks are awesome

Get them infrequently as a special treat from Paulina Meat Market in Chicago.  Definitely use a temperature probe.  Pretty much impossible to cook one of these bad boys without one, IMO.

I have to be seated

in time to hear "Baaaaand, take the fieeeeeld" otherwise it jinxes the whole operation.

I guess the question is

why don't you eat that for every game?  Also, bone-in?

That possible OL though

I mean, wow.

My question is . . .

why do we only have a 75% chance to beat Penn State but an 80% chance to beat Wisconsin?  I would have thought it would be the other way around.  I also would have thought the chance to beat Penn State would be more like 85-90%.  But I'm not a stats guy.

Per Eric Upchurch's twitter

(sorry I tried to embed his tweet twice and failed, massively), there's a hidden message within the message!!!

He just wants clicks

I don't like the guy, but there's no question he's made a nice living for himself by his ability to generate clicks for his website.

The problem

is that's what the players' union bargained for.  They agreed to give Goodell extraordinary power in arbitration.  Most unions aren't stupid enough to grant their opposition (management) such extraordinary arbitration powers.  It won't screw over other employees in arbitration unless the collective bargaining agreement in force is just as slanted as the one the NFLPA agreed to.

He's going to be a huge addition next season

For no other reason than we'll still have a floor general when Walton sits.  So we get to enjoy the luxury of having a backup PG for one season . . .  then we'll be back to our current predicament.

Makes sense to me

They should be heavily favored in every game they play until they Michigan, who they get at home.  Despite losing nearly their entire team, they return their QB.  That will be plenty for Meyer, who has that roster loaded with talent despite the departures.  All that said, while I think their odds of reaching the playoff are very high, I think their odds of winning it are low.

Awesome post.

I remember sitting there looking at our personnel and thinking how weird it was to have your starting left tackle and one of your starting defensive linemen out there on kick return coverage.  It sure paid off.  The Peppers block gets a lot of credit, but Cole just bulldozes his guy right over.  Welcome to the Big House, Northwestern.

I was

in my apartment on Oakland Ave.  Turned on CNN getting ready for class.  Saw 2nd plane hit live.

Drake Harris

My reaction after watching the presser: that was as close as you're going to get to effusive praise for a player.  The best part was - the player was Drake Harris.  Really great news.  Great news for Drake after what had to be a very frustrating couple of years with a nagging injury.  Great news for the team because he brings a dimension to the offense that no one else does.

Nice to see

that the kid is very interested in Michigan.  Unfortunately he plans to commit around signing day, so there's a long ways to go until he's in the fold.  Also, he's visiting OSU this weekend.

Don't have to show motive

Just have to show it was willful or premeditated.  Driving him to that industrial lot or wherever it was - that was sufficient for the mens rea.

Bernstein

How many drafts did he go through until he settled on the dry forest/empty reservoir metaphor?

“The Shane Morris incident, the poor performance of the football team, that’s like a spark in a very, very dry forest. And there’s not a lot of water around right now," Bernstein said. "I think the actions of the athletic department, I believe (some) generally agree, have drained whatever reservoir of goodwill there is with Michigan football in particular. So it makes navigating this issue far more difficult.

A question

about this play:

Utah with a four man line and Orchard, nominally a DE, as a SAM type guy. They blitz off a corner because they can. Funchess is lined up inside the hashmarks, and M can't handle it. Braden(-2) gets smoked by Orchard, blitzer free, kaput. (PR, N/A, protection 0/4, Braden -2, Team -2, RPS -1) Also M had Gardner try a play action type substance that involved a fake handoff to a running back who was on the other side of him. No PA may mean he can dump it off to one of his outlet options.

Leaving aside the play action fake to no one, isn't this a case of Gardner failing to identify the blitz?  Pre-snap it was pretty darn clear to me (some guy watching on tv), that the right-side of our line was overloaded and that a blitz was coming.  Gardner gets to the line with about 14 seconds left on the play clock looks around but doesn't really seem to be analyzing the defense, and then snaps the ball with 5 seconds to go.

We had the personnel to pick up that blitz.  The line could have been adjusted - Mags blocked no one on the play and Braden had to block two guys (though he failed at blocking the guy he chose to block).  Gardner could have instructed Smith to pick up the blitzer.  At least that's my uneducated take on what could have happened had the blitz been identified - I might be way off.

My issue is blitz identification.  Gardner is a 5th year senior and still seems to really struggle with this.  I highly doubt that's going to change.  So why not get the team to the line quicker and do what a vast majority of other teams do: have the coach ID the blitz and call in the audible.  Auburn and Oregon push tempo, but they also have their coaches assess the D and call in an audible.  THis happens after they hustle to the line.  The QB then steps back and looks to the sideline.  The coach either signals a new play, or says good to go.

I'm not saying we should run a lightning offense, but it seems to me that getting to the line quicker and having Nuss assess the D and call the audible could solve a lot of problems.  Chiefly, it gives Gardner - who already seems overwhelmed - one less thing to worry about.  Michigan can still snap the ball with 1 second left if they choose.

Just a thought about how to reduce some of the confusion out there.

My levels

10 10 0 5.  I'm not embarrassed by stretchgate.

That was a concerning comment

And it was backed up by the fact that ND's depleted secondary had our WRs blanketed almost every play.  Yet, out secondary got torched.  Frustrating.

I think Drake Johnson should get some additional chances

The guy set the Michigan HS rushing record, so he's got to have at least decent vision.  Maybe he can't block or something.  Then again, I look at guys like Rawls and Cox - who couldn't begin to sniff the field at Michigan - go elsewhere and show they can actually do some things.  Makes you wonder about Fred Jackson.

A 5-rating for weakside DE?

I sure hope he plays like it all season.  We desperately need a pass rush.

Game Notes

Says Green is the starter, not Smith.  You need to check your depth chart.

Great news

Messiah and Erik: time to hit the recruiting trail.  Go Blue.

I don't believe the email

threatening to revoke tickets w/o purchase of additional tickets.  I think it is most likely a mischaracterization of the email I received below offering me opportunity to purchase additional tickets no strings attached.  Is it possible the threatening email was sent to others with better seats than mine?  Sure.  But I'd need to see the email to believe it.

Dear [removed],

Thank you for being a Michigan Football Season Ticket Holder and renewing your seats for the 2014 season.  As a Season Ticket Holder, you receive many exclusive benefits, one of which may include the opportunity to add additional seats to your Season Ticket account when tickets are available.  With this in mind, we wanted to extend this special offer: the ability to order two (2) additional end zone season tickets for the 2014 Football season and the opportuntity to purchase discounted General Admission tickets to the Slippery Rock-Mercyhurst game at the Big House on October 18 for just $10 (reg. $20).

The two (2) additional seats can be purchased for $455 per season ticket by clicking on this link. These additional season tickets have an End Zone Preferred Seat Donation (PSD) of $75 per seat.  Michigan Athletic Development will follow up via email within a few weeks of the deadline to provide information about making the Preferred Seat Donation.  All season tickets in your account will be held at the Athletic Ticket Office until the Preferred Seat Donation balance is paid. Otherwise, all season tickets will be mailed in late July, early August.

Student/Alum/Did not attend:
  1. Student/Alum/Did not attend:  Alumus
  2. Number of previous seasons you purchased season tickets, as student or not, excluding 2014:  5 (plus 4 when was a student)
  3. Number of tickets renewed for 2014:  4
  4. Number of tickets NOT renewed for 2014:  0
  5. Bonus question:  Did the Nuss hire or the Penn State night game announcement sway your decision?  No.

Not sure how many games we'll get to this year - first child due in July.  Going to be a much bigger production than past seasons driving to AA from Chicago for games.  But renewed anyway.

The problem is the validation fee

it's a separate issue than why aren't students renewing tickets.  But the reason the student section has often been less than full is, IMO, directly attributable to the validation requirement.

If a random guy wants to buy a ticket to a random crappy game such as Akron, in the past his cheapest bet would be to buy one from a student.  Sure, he'd have to stand in the student section, but the ticket would be cheap.  When I first graduated I went to almost every game by buying a student ticket (because they were by far the cheapest) and sitting with friends who were still in school.  Can't do that anymore . . . unless you want to pay the validation fee.

But now, with the validation requirement, the student tickets are now much more expensive to buy on the secondary market because the random guy has to pay the validation fee.  In contrast, he could buy my tickets in section 19 for whatever I want to sell them for.   So for crappy games (and even not so crappy games), the student section is less than full because often the validation fee alone is far more than what a random person would pay on the secondary market for such games.

Interesting on Gentry

not a name I've heard mentioned before re: Michigan's 2015 QB chase.  But plainly not for lack of talent - kid has offers from Alabama, Texas, Tennessee and Ok. St. amongst others.  I wonder if our late interest will help us or hurt us.  He allegedly is down to the four schools I listed above and plans to decide in May/early June.  Maybe, for a change, Michigan can be the school that swoops in late and steals a guy.

Wow

Surprised Harris and Marble weren't unanimous.  Congrats to Nik.

Good list to be on

Excluding Beilein, I think Cinci's coach does an excellent job.  He gets a lot out of his team.

This isn't a new thing

That's been the game plan for Dantonio and MSU for the last several years.  It's an even better plan in college because the max PI penalty is just 15 yards.  State practices it so their corners become good at playing that way.  It's a mentality.  Michigan does not have have that mentality.

It's obvious who is being hired

Josh McDaniels has taken the job.  He withdrew his name from consideration as head coach of the Browns earlier today.  OBVIOUSLY that's because he's taking the Michigan head coaching gig - a step up from gig with Patriots and 10 steps up from Browns head coaching gig.  OBVIOUSLY.

No Dukes or York at WR

Deliberately omitted or forgotten?  Regardless, I think they struggle for playing time their entire careers.  Hope they prove me wrong!

Congrats to Tom

Recruiting plainly is a big business when local TV stations attempt to break into the game.

Nickel formation

Why do you say Hollowell is the other corner in Nickel situations?  Couldn't it be Stribling as well?  I think that will be interesting to see which one of those two is the other corner when Blake is at nickel.

Shane throw was great defense by Stribling

Love that he was all over his man like glue.  Morris put that throw right in stride for whoever the receiver was, he was just blanketed.
