Beautifully said. Thank you for sharing the misery. And the unbelievable joy tonight!

Hate to say it, but Edwards'…

Hate to say it, but Edwards' success may well have hurt Corum, in that it reminded voters how dominant our line is and how much they had to do with both runners' success.

But ultimately, yes, not being able to play in the most important game(s) of the year was going to make it very difficult for Blake to make a claim to the trophy.

Chuck definitely wears his…

Chuck definitely wears his ascot while drinking this wine.

3am Belfast time. Perfect!

3am Belfast time. Perfect!

Remarkable how frequently…

Remarkable how frequently the ball is put on the turf in this game between two top 5 teams. Was this an outlier, or was ball security just crap in the 70s?

Watched it in 5424 Van Tyne…

Watched it in 5424 Van Tyne in Markley. That was a good night.

What does this even mean?…

What does this even mean? This is wrong in so many ways it's hard to know where to begin.

He definitely shouldn't have…

He definitely shouldn't have done it. But is that the same officer who was threatening to arrest anyone in the LSU locker room who was smoking a cigar and seems to be outright harrassing that guy there?

His job that night was, for the most part, to protect the players and keep the peace. Not to get his name on the news by busting a player for some minor public nuisance offense on the biggest night of their lives.

I was there. Senior year. We…

I was there. Senior year. We had gone to Notre Dame the previous week and run on the field (twice) after Remy's field goal. We had decided we would have a party the night of the Colorado game. With 10 minutes left, one of my housemates started saying it was over. We told him to shut up. 5 minutes later everyone started chanting 'overrated'. 5 minutes later we were all speechless. As we started walking home, the skies opened up and it poured for the remainder of the night. We largely remained speechless even as we finished a keg between 10 people (the party was not a success).

No matter what their…

No matter what their response is, the idea that the head coach has no responsibility over these incidents is insupportable.

Had this thread originally…

Had this thread originally had a different title or something? Otherwise I'm struggling to figure out what in the content of the post you thought was so controversial.

This is just stupid. Players…

This is just stupid. Players leaving for the NFL is not indicative of problems with a program. Period.

And if we were the only place where players who were leaving for the NFL were sitting out bowl games, you might have a point. As it is, you may not like the trend, but we are just part of it.

Clearly there was room for…

Clearly there was room for only one A. Solomon on the team.

I've found the media's…

I've found the media's writing off our offense very problematic. We've very clearly placed an emphasis on the ground game (and TOP) with the intention of wearing down defenses over the course of the game, even if it holds us back from putting up big points. There is significant risk in this strategy, especially against a team like PSU. But at the same time, it has allowed us, at least in theory, to keep significant aspects of our offense under wraps as we come up to this crucial final run. I suppose we might want to test a more wide-open style under game conditions. But, on the other hand, if we are capable of that more wide-open style, we now have PSU, OSU, and any potential later opponents primed to play a team that plays a grind-it-out-on-the-ground style of offense, when it's far from inconceivable that we could (especially with Black back) open a game with an aerial attack that would completely knock a quality opponent for a loop.

Am I dreaming? Quite possibly. But the potential is definitely there.

Anyone else find it funny…

Anyone else find it funny that they've got a plaque for Brady Hoke, but not one for RichRod? RichRod is in the full list of names. It's not so much that I think there should be a full plaque for RichRod, more that I'm a little surprised that Hoke was deemed worthy of one.

If they fire or 'mutually…

If they fire or 'mutually part ways' with him after the season, they really will have blown this situation. They could have shown themselves to be an institution with some class and standards (HA!) unlike MSU. So now they would still have gotten rid of one of the top coaches in the country, but only after sacrificing any semblance of ethics. Way to go Schmuckeyes!

Come on .... They needed a QB and picked up what they could. It was a good move that didn't pan out.

And yes, there are some freshman and sophomores who are contributing right away because they're that good. But the OL is poor and it's way too early to judge Harbaugh for that. And combine that with mediocre QB play and what do you expect?

Anything less than 10-2 next year and the criticism is warranted. For now, the coaching staff is still subject to the laws of college football physics

That's the only thing that would make this acceptable to me.

Dumb dumb dumb

So a questionalbly appliable rule is unquestionable for 46 minutes a game, but can decide a game for 2.  Idiotic.

a bit of righteous indignation?

Yeah, fine, he couldn't stop it, but he could do a little better than 'it is what it is' as a response.  He should be calling out the SEC and friends as the anti-competitive wusses that they are.

force may be a bigger problem than concussion

Researchers are increasingly coming to believe that it isn't necessarily concussions that are the problem, but rather repeated forceful impacts to the head.  So if they could come up with a metric whereby there was a maximum force load per day (a very big if), that could be a major advance.

Apples and Oranges

In the broad sense, there is truth in your overall point.  However, the article linked to here is about a local sports channel.  That's a totally different animal from the national networks.  The model for the local networks is completely different, with absolute dependency on commitment to local teams.  And I would not want to depend on that commitment in LA.

If you're suggesting that the

If you're suggesting that the kids and their families were naive for believing that an offer meant a 'commitable' offer, and that a 'commitment' meant a commitment, then fine, that's probably true.  And should they have taken the hint, be it through silence or other suggestion?  Probably (and certainly, Swenson should have come to camp in AA if asked to do so).  But considering that our reputation for the last while had been that we honor our offers and commitments, did they maybe have some reason to believe that they could depend upon an agreement they had entered into?

Go Blue-ish?

So, I'm going to assume that you, like most of us, like nothing more than when a recruit announces for Michigan full of enthisiasm, loving the Maize and Blue and counting the days until he gets to step foot on campus (maybe just like you and I did from the time we knew we were going to Michigan until we actually got there?).

But, because of the fact that they are going to get a free ride for football (not exactly a walk in the park in any sense of the word, and since their talent level apparently renders them expendable to Michigan, hardly any guarantee of a future lucrative career in the sport), any feelings of love or loyalty they feel toward this university that we love are meaningless, and they have no right to feel hurt that that dream was taken away from them?  I don't quite remember how this went with Weaver, but there's no doubt that Swenson was Blue all the way.

Not only that, but they should continue to feel that loyalty to the university enough to show gratitude (which by the way, they both did anyway) to Harbaugh just for taking them in the first place, like thanking a girlfriend who just dumped you for having spent any time with you at all in the first place.

Give me a break.  Again, it happens all the time, and I don't think Harbaugh is a bad person (and I want him to continue to do what is necessary to get back to the top), but no, it's not a great look for us, and yes, these kids do deserve some sympathy.

denial

Yes, but Weaver and Swenson didn't really commit and decommit and act like divas, did they?

I think you'll find that most of us who are uneasy with this aren't even saying that we don't think Harbaugh should do what he has to do to get the best players.  But to deny that a few kids are getting hurt along the way is just nonsense, seemingly intended to allow you to make yourself feel that you are still entitled to feel that everything we/he does is the right thing because we're Michigan and he's Harbaugh.

Really, it's not unlike the people who trot out the 'college players should be paid' line to justify Chris Webber's actions and claim Michigan didn't deserve to be punished or tarnished.  Yes, college players deserve to be paid and it's bullshit that they need to struggle to buy a new jacket in the winter.  But that doesn't change the fact that Webber knowingly broke the rules and that Fisher and Michigan probably should have known.

The world is full of tough compromises and purity may be an unattainable goal (if it even should be a goal).  But don't try to get up on your high horse and claim it's the kids' fault in the first place.

Amazing game

There was a moment in that game when we were making the comeback after having been down by 20 or something like that when they committed 2 consecutive shot clock violations and then took a timeout (or maybe it was a TV timeout) and the crowd was going absolutely nuts.  I have still to this day never heard The Victors sung louder.

Not worth an extended

Not worth an extended argument, as I see your point, and obviously Shoop is excellent.  But if you want to focus on 'not his players' as an issue, perhaps you'll recall the defensive recruiting under RR and think of what Mattison inherited.  And while they may not be Shoop's players, BO'B recruited some outstanding defenders.

Mattison's record takes a backseat to no one.  Your overall point appears to have been that Franklin is wasting the talents of an outstanding DC, and that's fine, I agree.  But I'm not sure that 'better than' is really that supportable.

??

His DC is better than Greg Mattison?

Good town

There's still plenty of political bullshit to go around, and that can be a drag, but overall it's a good place to live.  Lots of good bars, and as you found, very friendly people.

The thing about people getting friendlier north of London may be true, but being from NY myself, I tend to be wary of the 'people from big cities are dicks' motifs.

Breaking News

17-yr old Soon-to-be-Sports Stars in College Find Easy Alcohol and Sex on Campus

Jalen is not alleging that anyone at UM paid for him to have sex.  If you think this doesn't happen at literally every big time program (and yes, even with the squeaky-clean program Beilein runs, even here), you're nuts.

And as far as 'Jalen should keep his mouth shut' goes--the guy is getting paid millions to talk about sports.  When an issue comes up that he has some experience with and he doesn't give up the goods, he's stealing from his employers.

Hilarious

That is one of the dumbest things I've seen in football.

The Pats look confused for a second or two and then realise there's only the snapper blocking, and come back to the ball like, 'Are you serious?'

The late, late show

I hate 8PM games, but only because for me it means sitting down to start watching a football game at 1AM.

What history with Speight are

What history with Speight are you referring to?

And, I am reasonably pleased with what the team has done so far, but that cannot be credited to Rudock.

I need a life because I have the temerity to criticize a QB who has been demonstrably mediocre?  What is the point of having this website if reasonable criticisms are out of bounds?  Is this just  a cheerleading blog?

Criticism is not (and should not be) hate

Let me add my name to the chorus finding this thread dumb.

I agree with you--anyone saying we'd beat Ohio State with a better QB is a moron.

But if you're looking at what Rudock is doing and are in any way satisfied or think he's doing OK, you may also be a moron. The interceptions are bad enough.  But the absolute inability to hit any pass of more than 5 yards is ridiculous and will make it impossible for us to compete against good teams.  And the 'it's all the receivers' fault' or 'he's still learning the system' excuses are getting very old indeed.  His passes simply have not been accurate or even really all that close.  Fact of the matter is, while Speight may not have completed either of those late passes, they were pretty damn close to right on the money, and far more accurate than any 5+ yard pass thrown by Rudock.

Should we trust this staff?  Of course, but if anything that should only make us more uneasy about what sits behind Rudock.  I went back and read Brian's QB preview after week 1, and it was startling--I've never seen such variance between a prediction and the facts on the ground.  I'm not faulting Brian here, I'm merely pointing out that Rudock has not been as advertised.

Game management?  Yeah, OK, but let's not forget that with the running game (and perhaps more importantly, offensive line) we had with Griese, we could afford a passing game that was middling.  We don't have that luxury here, and Rudock is no Griese.

As for this 'let's be happy being mediocre' garbage--is there not a MAC team you should be rooting for?  I think most of us are willing to agree that it will take some time for us to get back to the top.  But in the meantime, I think we're well within our rights to make legitimate criticisms of a QB who is performing at a level well below what was expected (and well below the level of a legitimate DI QB).

One that keeps popping up in

One that keeps popping up in my list is 'SchindlersFist'.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think this is a good name; but I do marvel at the utter tastelessness of it.

What a load of crap If Hoke's reign had been successful, you and everyone else on the board would think this was a fantastic thing. It wasn't, and no doubt we're better off for the change that's come in the form of HARBAUGH. But the idea that you're looking at this as some kind of indication of why he failed (rather than the fact that he was simply a mediocre football coach) is absolutely laughable. I'd put the over/under on the impact/indicative nature of pictures/quotes in the weight room at 0.000001%. And I'd take the under.
??

You mean the players who signed up to be coached by Red Berenson?

You want him to be fired because you think he's not up to it anymore, that's fine.  But don't couch it in some self-righteous crap about concern for the players.

Winning with class

The man has one year left on his contract.  If he and Pearson talk (and do you really think they don't?) and agree now is the time, great.  But if we throw a legendary coach (and the mentor of our ideal target, Babcock notwithstanding) out on his ass with one year left on his contract, I hardly think Pearson or any other coach worth their salt will come rushing in to replace him.

If he wants to, let the man finish out his contract.  I have to imagine Pearson will be available and, with Red's blessing, willing, a year from now.

Question:

Is this the first time the words "Thanks NCAA" have ever been used without sarcasm?

You've gotta be kidding The coach leaves in a month, six months, a year, I'm with you, but the next day? You think he just figured it out this morning? Drayton (and surely Urban) were engaged in an extended lie to get an 18-year-old kid to sign away the next four years of his life. All they had to do was wait one more day to publicly release a fait accompli. There are worse things in the world, and yeah, sure, crap like this happens all the time in recruiting. But to quote Joe Biden, this is a big fucking deal.
I'm looking forward to Paul

I'm looking forward to Paul Giamatti playing Chad Ford when the movie version of this comes out.

On the other hand...

Perhaps he went to the Jags specifically to coach Denard.  That would be an excellent decision.

Those were 2 ideas:
1: worse

Those were 2 ideas:
1: worse team than Bills
2: in Jacksonville (not exactly cosmopolitan destination job.  though, admittedly, considerably warmer than Buffalo)

Do you honestly think he

Do you honestly think he wasn't expecting to land one of the open HC jobs?

The 'he didn't like Buffalo' angle (at least enough to leave a job) seems spurious for a guy who went to and coached Syracuse.  As for him not liking his co-workers or owner, shit happens; it's not a great reason to leave.

As for Harbaugh, come on Magnus, is that even remotely the same thing?  Guy leaves NFL to take 'Savior' HC job at one of the most prestigious and historically successful big-time college programs (that also happens to be his beloved alma mater) vs. guy leaves NFL HC job to become vaguely titled assistant coach at worse NFL team in Jacksonville?

I'm just gonna come right out and say it was a bad decision.  And I'm pretty sure he knows it too.

I don't know.  HC jobs don't

I don't know.  HC jobs don't grow on trees.  And it's not like he'll be the hottest name on the market next year after toiling away in anonymity in Jacksonville for a year.

Wishful thinking

The best team almost loses at least one or two games every year, even when dominant.  We can hate that they won it, but let's not take away what they did.  They beat the hell out of a very good team with their 3rd string quarterback.  You can try to denigrate that if you want, but you'll find yourself in pretty weak company.  We can't be hoping for Ohio State to be weak--it's not happening anytime soon.  The only thing we can hope for (and finally there is very good reason for this hope) is that Michigan will soon be just as good as they are, setting up epic battles in the B1G once again.

??

This is a non-comment.

What this season demonstrated, recruiting-wise, is that programs that will soon fire their coach, so that therefore you, as a recruit have absolutely no idea who you will be playing for, do not get top-notch recruits.  Nothing more than that.
