I listened to this whole…

I listened to this whole podcast tonight. Thank you so much for providing the content. Helpful, informative and much appreciated.

Born a Crime -…

Audiobook:

Born a Crime - Trevor Noah (He narrates it himself and it's hilarious and enlightening)

Podcasts:

I'll second "Hardcore History" by Dan Carlin. Great narration and keeps my attention throughout.

"American Fiasco" - Fun, easy, short. About the USMNT crash out of the 1998 World Cup. If you don't like soccer then perhaps not.

"Serial." Specifically season 1. It's a must. Start here honestly.

As an Everton fan, even

As an Everton fan, even though the season has been fairly mediocre with entirely too many draws, this would be a good time to say: Thanks for Romelu Lukaku!

Info on D.O.'s

I'm a wolverine alum and long time mgoblog reader who is a current MSUCOM student. This is a helpful (although slightly immature) examination of osteopathic medicine in case you're interested: http://www.buzzfeed.com/ninjacowboy/osteopathic-medicine-does-exist-ira…

Long story short, both DOs and MDs are legit and MSU graduates a lot of the state of Michigan's primary care providers. There is an interesting history as to why MSU has two medical schools that is too long to tell in this space. Suffice to say COM graduates more in state primary care physicians than our counterparts in CHM which is one of many reasons for the higher ranking.

Should go without saying, but before I'm questioned about loyalties: Always and forever, Go blue!

Sad Truths

Echoing Brian: one love Dan.

I was at the game last Friday and it was my first time back to Yost in a few years ('10 alum) and I enjoyed the students as always. However, I found myself consistently more impressed with the handful of unabashed and hilarious tech students in the southwest corner. Don't take that the wrong way. I love Yost and I think only the students can be the change in the long run. Winning should help...but don't be afraid to original, ridiculous and absolutely cross societal lines of appropriateness. I did love the Arizona flag and giant Yost portrait fwiw. I used to tell people there was no better sporting event than a game at Yost but now, I'm just not 100% sure that's true anymore. That doesn't mean it can't be the case again.

Yes. Perfection.

I wish I could start the posbang for this one.

Partly false

I got over the wall and made it to mid-field with the team. I got to sing the victors with the team in the corner and then a security officer let me back in the stands afterwards. Another friend made it all the way into the tunnel with the team. We didn't all get body slammed.

The Best

I was lucky enough to have him as a professor my senior year in his class "History of College Athletics." He was, without any reservations, the best professor I had at UofM. I learned more about acting professionally, mature and confident as well as and conducting myself with integrity from him than I did from any other professor. He even ran into my dad and I having lunch at the Parthenon(RIP) and took time to come over and introduce himself to my dad saying "I know your son from my class and it's been fantastic to teach him." Just a great, great guy. Three and Out wasn't too shabby a read either.

This.

You've pretty much nailed it. I personally enjoy most of the memes and running inside jokes, but I've also been a reader (though infrequent poster) since the RR coaching search. This blog, with its wittiness and general sarcastic/satirical/oddball tone is what helped me survive the first two years of the RR era as an upperclassman at M.

I do miss Brian's songs. Although, again, I don't think that can be forced. FWIW, I immediately get chills and a flood of memories concerning Michigan football when I hear "Better Son or Daughter" or "Sons and Daughters." That's the kind of intangible tie to the blog that I can't undo.

Keep up the good work mgoblog writers. Life is busier for me now, but I'll always check in when I can. Thank you.

96-97

Homer was also on the 96-97 team. It was his rookie season. He was indeed the last of 97-98 as well though.

Deveraux

It was hull-datsyuk-deveraux for the "two kids and a goat" line in 01-02. Z came into the league the following season.

Rutgers: re-claiming the #1

Rutgers: re-claiming the #1 ranking since 1869.

Good interview

I liked his comments on the game and it will definitely be interesting if I can ever actually see the Trouba hit. Sounds like there is some serious speculation whether it was illegal or not. Gongshow.

I don't know but...

I have Carl Hagelin-like speed.

I had tickets to the Winter

I had tickets to the Winter Classic...so seeing as how now I don't plan on spending any money on the NHL again any time real soon I would love to purchase a Michigan hockey jersey.  I've been a fan for a while (since starting undergrad in 2006) but have never put my meager (now medical student) funds towards a nice jersey. Anyway, the problem is that I really do not like the "block M" Michigan jerseys that have been worn recently. Is there anywhere I can find a regular men's large/XL of the older maize with a giant blue Block M hockey jersey? I will buy it today with my now recouped winter classic funds if anyone knows where to get one online. Help me mgofriends!

Beautiful. Cheers sir.

Beautiful. Cheers sir.

Sons? Daughters?

No "better son or daughter" by rilo kiley for historical context or better yet "sons and daughters" by the Decemberists to remind us of the full circle we've come through?

Jim Lahey

Wherefore art thou? Any input on this? I always appreciate your perspective on these things.

You win all the points.

You win all the points.  Thrice was downright amazing and I was able to meet (very briefly) and personally thank Dustin and Riley for all their music and lyrics from the last 14 years.  I'm stunned that this tour is the end for them.

Disagree

I've lived in Pittsburgh and worked on Pitt's campus for two years now.  I disagree that they would be a good addition to the B10.  First, their football team plays in Heinz field and rarely if ever sell that out.  So much so they struggled to sell-out ND and WVU the past two years and those are their "biggest" games.  Secondly, Pitt has incredibly fickle fans.  Few people in Pittsburgh care about Pitt football because of the Steelers and not many more care about Pitt basketball unless they are in the top-3 of their conference (See 2011-2012 season and attendance figures).  Finally, adding Pitt adds no extra TV markets or regional draw.  PSU has already accomplished whatever the B10 could hope to accomplish with Pitt.  The only reason Pitt is thrown around is their relatively comparable academic standards.  I don't think it's a good fit as much as I enjoy Pittsburgh and Pitt athletics.

Fair Point

That's definitely fair.  Honestly I've only followed the prem for a few seasons and even more recently finally adopted Everton as my club to support after watching a variety of clubs and games.  I guess just speaking more from my own experience it seemed as though Tottenham was the trendy pick to support because they weren't the typical "top-5" club.

Fwiw, I'm a big fan of the way Bale plays and love watching him. Do you think Spurs are able to keep him and/or Modric around this offseason? I'm hoping an agreeable transfer deal gets worked out for Pienaar to move back to Everton permanently since he has been solidly in-form recently and doesn't seem to fit in with Tottenham well.

Everton

Join me as a Everton supporter!

They are historically a color you can already get well behind (Blue).  They have a deeply loyal fanbase.  They've never been relegated in the 20 years of the Premier League and have been competitive quite a majority of those seasons.  They don't have foreign big money backing so they certainly aren't "buying" any success they have.  They have a "fun" rivalry with Liverpool FC.  They had a fantastic second half of this season this year and they are very similar to UM football with a history of success but a bit of a lull since their last set of glory days (80's).

There is a nice American flavor to the club as well with Tim Howard as the keeper and Landon Donovan having played twice for Everton on loan.

I agree that as long as you don't pick City, Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal or Liverpool you really won't be jumping on any bandwagon.  Although I would add Tottenham to the list as well...bit of the "popular pick" with espn and other american analysts the last while.

Everton/Newcastle

I'll be watching my Toffees taking on Newcastle on my computer while flipping between the Manchester United and Man City games on the television.  Normally I would love to see Newcastle beat out the Spurs or Gunners for a champs league spot, but unfortunately I'll be pulling for a victory to keep Everton above Liverpool in the table.  Come On You Blues!

TomVH.  End of my list.

Love it

The playoff atmosphere tonight is fantastic.  I love the physicality of both teams.  Let's Go Wings!

Thanks for finding the confirmation.  Can we get this link as a reply earlier in the thread or even copied by the Mod's or OP into the original post to assuage the hoards?

Great Podcast.

Great podcast. You've been doing some awesome work on the blog here Ace.  I'll love reading it even more knowing I'm getting a lot of my Michigan sports info from someone who was also class of 2006 from an Ann Arbor high school, then a UM Alum (although I was Spring 2010) and played in a band at places like the Howell Rec Center etc.  Keep it up.

Agreed

Yeah, I said one of the best implying there are others even I would rank above him.  Yzerman, Lemieux, Gretzky etc. were all in the last 15+ years.  Sid is a great player and could reach that type of pantheon if he can go on to have a prolonged career.

I agree with everything you said about Lidstrom.  One of the best. Ever.

EDIT: You are quick sir.  Cheers.  Go Wings.

Sad Day

I am a huge Red Wings fan, but it would be terribly sad to see Sidney Crosby retire this early.  Whether he is treated as the hero or the villain, the man is one of the best to lace up the skates in the last 15+ years.  I hope the best for him and his recovery.  I think it's early to say that he'll retire, but this sure looks like something that could hang over him the rest of his career.  Also, minor note, his rookie year was 2005-2006 coming off the NHL lockout.  He went to the Cup Final in his 3rd year 2008 and lost and then won it in his 4th year in 2009.

Full Circle?

Great work Brian and Ace.  Thanks for providing the "soundtrack" to my many long drives for work.  Just a quick thought.  Whether it was intentional or not I loved listening to "Sons and Daughters" close out the podcast while thinking back to "Better Son or Daughter" from the 2009 hype video.  The contrast between "You'll be a better son or daughter..." from 2009 to "Here we are now, sons and daughters" after the 2011 season and especially the win over Ohio was beautiful.

Cheers

Why not  celebrate indeed.  I sure have memories I'll never forget of jumping around with Threet/Odoms/Hemingway et al. after a crazy comeback win over a top-10 team in the Big House. Cheers Sir that you sacrificed yourself as the first over which allowed me to get out on the field to celebrate.  I'm glad that you ended up getting into the corner with the team as well.

Were you there when Cody Martin, the Drum Major at the time, was begging the ushers/security to let all the students onto the field?  I remember him pleading with the security folks and then looking at all of us and saying "When we do this against the Buckeyes next year, you're all coming onto this field..."  Sadly, it wasn't to be in 2009 but I fully support a rushing of the field if Michigan beats the Buckeyes this year.  Do it for Cody.

No Sir

Haha.  Nope.  I actually ran with the team over to the corner, sang "The Victors" and then wondered: "what now!?"  So I walked back over to the steps leading up into the student section from the field and an usher realized I wasn't supposed to be on the field and told me to come back into the stands.  So I did.  No repercussions. /endofcoolstory

Been there.

Done that.  Wiscy 2008.  I was row 4 in the student section and the people behind us were screaming at us to rush the field.  I was second over the wall after a guy from the first row.  The first guy was grabbed by a security officer.  The same officer tried to grab me with his free hand and I ducked.  Realizing I  had just evaded an officer I took off sprinting towards mid-field without looking back.  I made it all the way out there to turn around and notice that the other students were definitely NOT rushing the field.  It was simultaneously one of the craziest/most exciting/loneliest moments of my life.  The best view of Michigan Stadium I've ever had though.

Before anyone gets all "you shouldn't have rushed against Wisconsin blargh..." realize I sat through the horror, 2 home OSU losses and countless other painful games as an M fan.  Also, largest home comeback in Big House history in game 500.  Totally worth it and I would do the same thing again.

Dual Threat

Quoting Brand New and having a Sufjan album as your avatar...now that is a serious dual threat.  I would +1 if I could sir.

Enjoy Merrill while we can

Thanks for the update Brian.  I admittedly haven't been following the team anywhere near as closely since the Big Chill and the Christmas break.

We've gotta love watching Merrill now while we still can.  Considering how terrible the defense is over there in New Jersey, he could be on a quick plane ride outta town next season.  Finally, here's one comment to hopefully hitting the "over".

Effectiveness against power-running

Perhaps watching today's matchup against Pitt will give some insight into the effectiveness of the 3-3-5 against more "power-running" teams.  I understand that Pitt is not very good, however they do like to run it a lot with dion lewis and ray graham in a power style.  Just a thought if you were really looking to watch the 3-3-5 in action...turn on ABC.

The Team. The Team. The Team.

The Team. The Team. The Team.

You seem to have forgotten your own history OldSchool.

Clarification

As Waxing_Gibbous already asked, it would help to have clarification on the budget question.  I filled out the survey and answered what my weekly budget was for everything, but I have a feeling you meant discretionary spending.

Anyway, very interesting idea.  It's always refreshing to see interesting business ideas coming from fellow Wolverines.

He had 42pts. and was a +23

He had 42pts. and was a +23 for the Washington Capitals last season, all while playing an average of less than 16:00 a game.  That's a decent stat line, and I feel like given his character and veteran leadership there has to be a team that is willing to sign him for at least league minimum.  If for nothing else than to see what he really does have left in the tank.

Carvin Johnson's Comeback Effect?

Whenever Carvin gets healthy again, what kind of effect will he have on the obviously struggling secondary?  I mean, he won the job outright during camp and seemed to play OK in his limited time against UConn.  Do you think they'll be quick to ease him back in when healthy and that he can help eliminate some of the big-play issues?

Please

Call the Dave Brandon himself if you have to, but get down there and try it!  If you can even make 35 yard FG's and closer...it's still worth it to me.

Practicing Catholic who hates ND

I was raised Catholic, went to Catholic grade school and high school and just recently graduated from Michigan and I am still a practicing Catholic.  I actually hate ND so much more BECAUSE I'm Catholic.  I can't stand the attitude, "oh, you're Catholic, you have to root for ND".  Bull S***.  ND doesn't represent the Catholic faith/Church well at all and I think Michigan's football team is much more humble and representing of good values then ND ever will be.
