1 week 5 days ago I can't imagine any staff not

I can't imagine any staff not paying some attention ot the recruiting services. There are thousands of football prospects each year to sift through. At the very least, I'd expect all staffs to do a sanity check at the big recruiting sites to make sure nobody slipped through the cracks. And, why not? It's a very cheap resource whose benefits, even if only used minimally, must far outweigh the costs for any school.

6 weeks 17 hours ago ^^^ This ^^^

Come on people...almost to the end of like 100 comments before the first CONFIDENT! I am shocked myself at how confident I am in this game given how I felt about this team's chances when the tourney started.

6 weeks 4 days ago I find it hard to believe

I find it hard to believe they would make this announcement today. Not that I think it won't happen, but can't imagine this official.

7 weeks 5 days ago GRIII (and THJ)

What's their rush? I know neither is definitely leaving, and I'd guess less than 50% chance for both, but why would they? Both of their families are clearly very well off (thank you daddies), and college has to be more fun than the NBA if you take the money out of the equation. These guys should stick around, have fun, get a degree and develop into lottery picks. The threat of a career-ending injury just isn't the same motivation as it is in football.

11 weeks 4 days ago This argument makes no sense.

This argument makes no sense. It would be one thing if the investment were somehow dependent on the person's response, but whether an actor or an athlete, sexual orientation, marital status or other personal details are completely inconsequential when it comes to their performance on the job. This is why it is illegal to ask those questions.

11 weeks 6 days ago The "Fresh Five" moniker was

The "Fresh Five" moniker was thrown around a lot more in 1994 with the Ward, Taylor, Baston, Mitchell, Conlon recruiting class. Back then, given that two of the Fab Fivers were still around, it was much more appropriate. Now it's nothing but a lack of creativity on the part of the author.

[EDIT: Sorry T...should have kept reading the thread before posting]

We have this conversation every year. If this guy really is a commit, just because "I Like Burgers" hasn't heard of him doesn't make him "random." If the coaches offered him, the coaches wanted him. If the coaches wanted him, they likely have their reasons. It's not like we have to pass on Dashawn Hand because we got a 3-star CB.

Keep in mind this is only for the Super Bowl teams. We could do this next year, and SF and BAL will have very similar rosters but likely won't be in the Super Bowl. Unless you do this league wide, or at least for all playoff teams, it doesn't seem prudent to jump to any real conclusions.

21 weeks 4 days ago I read this earlier today and

I read this earlier today and could only think this is the first of what is going to be a major story evolving in 2013. I hate to say it, but there is no way steroids aren't rampant in CFB. The incentive to succeed and gain access to that NFL $$ is just too great, and with weak testing protocols, there just has to be more use than it currently seems. I think we should all get ready for an MLB style crackdown in the next year or two.

21 weeks 4 days ago Doesn't matter...either he is

Doesn't matter...either he is over-rated or, if he does live up to the hype, he's a one and done. The third option is both--over-rated and leaving after freshman year anyway (i.e., Nerlens Noel).

21 weeks 6 days ago The teams are hard to

The teams are hard to compare. Our current team is incredibly talented and expertly coached. Execution and shooting have been as good as can be expected. We have a bunch of extraordinarily talented players contributing to a more superior team product.

The Fab 5 won on brute force, athleticism and intimidation. I don't remember the same kind of sophisticated offenses being executed the way Beilein has our current guys running. I could be wrong, but this is seems to be the main distinction between the two teams as far as I'm concerned.

23 weeks 1 day ago Interesting idea, and

Interesting idea, and definitely a metric worth including in a more comprehensive evaluation, but I think you undervalue Ws. Being that I graduated in 1998 (i.e., with the 1997 NC team), I've always been a defender of teams who just know how to close out games. While dominating a game definitely gives insight into a team's strength, I don't think domination is any more valuable than having the skills, coaching, etc. to come back from a deficit to win a game that most teams would lose (see UM-Iowa, 1997). Clearly these are two opposite approaches to winning, but in the end, it's the W/L record that counts most.

This ^^^ I can't help but think it's just a matter of time where JB caves and just leaves Stauskas on the floor for 25+ min. The kid is going to light it up. Along with GRIII, THJ and Burke, teams simply can't match up wiith 4 major threats like that. I think JB's hand may be forced in this one as this should be our toughest competition yet. We will win handily because we will be playing our most potent offense for more minutes. 77-60.

Not sure what constitutes "each round" but 5% of one round (assuming there are multiple rounds) may not be the dagger it appears to be. Kovacs should win this thing hands down.

25 weeks 3 days ago Great writeup and good

Great writeup and good backstory. Clearly you've done a lot more research on KSU than I, but I can't help but think we warrant a prediction with a larger margin of victory. Against Pitt, our 3-point shooting was abysmal. Even if that rebounds just a little bit, which it should, I truly see our team as dominant this year. If it turns out we shoot 15-20% from three against good competition, then I can agree with you, but based on our previous games (~50%!), this will not happen. In the meantime, I'll reserve the two-point margins of victory predictions for our far superior B1G competition. I feel like we should be steamrolling all of our competition (NCST included) until conference play. Our #4 ranking suggests I am not alone.

26 weeks 3 days ago Perspective

I love Denard as much as any Michigan fan. He is no doubt near or at the top of the list of the most electrifying players in the history of our program. That being said, I think we are all getting a little carried away here. We've had Desmond. We've had Woodson. We've had Carter. We've had Hart and Henne and Long. Believe it or not, they all played a last game at Michigan Stadium too. They were perhaps honored and applauded more vigorously than some of their lesser known classmates, but they were not idolized. I can't help but think Denard has taken on this godlike status because he has been so much fun and such a success who kept our program afloat through some tough times and ultimately thrive. I'll miss you Denard, but I can't help but look forward to the future Wolverine(s) who will join you near the top of that list.

This year, we have four guys who can legitimately step into that role. Without mentioning that shift in personnel, I think the analysis is incomplete. My main point is that if Morgan averages 7 ppg, the other three guys I mentioned don't need to contribute very much to add to our productivity down low.

32 weeks 5 days ago Agreed

This seems like a very lazy "analysis" to put Morgan on the list without considering the return of Horford and the arrival of Biefeldt and McGary. I would actually be pretty concerned if UM's success hinges on Morgan droppiing more than 7 ppg.

Whether this was Hoke's logic or not can be debated, but nobody can deny it is a valid proposition.

1 year 8 weeks ago The state of NCAA basketball

The state of NCAA basketball is such that there is incentive to root against your best players. I, and I presume most UM fans, are quietly glad THJ had an off year so we can get him back again. And, we now all know that if Trey does return, he is as good as gone next year if he repeats his 2011-2012 performance. So, we need to either rely on JB bringing in classes every year like he has lined up for the next two, or we need more guys who don't project well to the NBA but are college stars. Seems like there may be something to the Coach K strategy after all. (NOTE: It pains me to give dook credit for anything)

It seems there needs to be some way to normalize the data a bit. Minnesota and Indiana both sucked in 2011. In a 12 game season, one W is going to affect a teams winning percentage in a significant way. So, by sucking so bad, both of them are effectively boosting their opponents' winning percentage. Without giving it much thought, it seems that the games opponents play against the team you are measuring should be removed from the analysis. This may not be the best way, but by definition, I would expect all really bad teams to boost opponents' SOS by about 8% (1/12).

1 year 22 weeks ago UM and UCLA grad's take

Having gone to both schools (and being born and raised in LA), I have always said that the biggest issue with UCLA is the fact that their stadium is 20 miles away from campus. This has a profound ripple effect in that it takes loads of effort for students to get to games and greatly diminishes the gameday experience compared to a school like UM. The result is an apathetic fan base and virtually zero buzz about the program among the students or otherwise. I have often wondered about recruits visiting and going to campus and then sitting in traffic for an hour plus just to see the stadium--that can't help to lure elite talent. On top of everything else, most of their games are on local Fox Sports channels, usually not even broadcast in HD. Football simply isn't a priority, and it should be. They missed their opportunity to strike while USC should have been down, but they let USC dominate, even with one hand tied behind their back. Very sad.

As long as 95% of the bowls are held in warm-weather locations, this is going to happen, especially since your definition of "home" team is that campus is closer to the stadium. Keep in mind, the goal of the bowl planners is $$, so they will always select teams that will fill the stadiums, which typically means selecting close-by (i.e., warm-weather) schools. Even with your criteria, most of the "home" teams are still a plane flight--or a very long drive--away from the bowl location. I don't think this is as big of an anti-B1G problem as you suggest.

There is no post game in our offense. Morgan is a very talented player with good hands, great feet and a nice touch. But, he NEVER posts up. I don't know if it just isn't part of the offense to look down low to him (except for pick-and-rolls) of if he just isn't a good post player. But, I feel like our offense could be infinitely more effective if we could develop some sort of an inside-out game rather than the pass-around-the-perimeter-until-someone-gets-open (PAT PUS GO--copyright bluebrains98) offense we tend to employ.

So far, it has seemed that people have left due to changes in the system, not necessarily the coaching personnel*. Guys who want to play in a spread offense will go find one (even at the expense of a good education). Maybe other guys would do better in the final weeks of recruiting, but that is yet to be seen. 2 years 18 weeks ago RR vs. Hoke transfers/attrition

We will see a lot less attrition this time around (hopefully including Denard) simply due to the fact that our roster is stacked for the next couple years--espectially on offense. Sure people left when RR took over because of the new system, but also because we were going to suck that year no matter what (granted, Mallet would have helped). But, the vibe with this team seems very positive, and I think they genuinely enjoy playing (and winning) together.

I think the point is that this was not an isolated event. It fits TP's personality, and as KH says, even the suspension isn't going to change him. We always root for guys to recover after making mistakes, but this mistake seems to be the product of a deeper character flaw that isn't going away any time soon.

Come on people. They basically stole the copyright symbol. See through the aesthetic to get the humor. It is Comedy Central. I say well done to CC.

2 years 25 weeks ago The only way I can see

The only way I can see victory is to bring the heat on TP and force him into making mental mistakes. The laid back 3-3-5 hasn't and won't cut it today. Bring it GERG!!!

(Oh yeah...and Denard rushes and passes for 200+.)

2 years 25 weeks ago Thank you for this analyis

I can now enjoy my turkey in peace. In all seriousness, we need to understand that M football has been way ahead of the curve since the advent of college football. We had to go through a stretch like this eventually. Unlike other similar programs (read, ND), we will have more glory soon.

2 years 26 weeks ago Ah high school

I was taught many things in high school. Then, I went to the University of Michigan and had this realization that maybe some things I learned in high school should be ignored. I would be hesitant to post here on premises from high school. [I think] That might result in heavy negging, but that's just my opinion.

The coverage may be second rate, but it's coverage. It is the BTN that guarantees we all get to see every single MIchigan game every year. And, we bitch and moan about ESPN, ABC and NBC too. Put your TV on mute during games and be happy you can watch the game.

Lou Holtz is "the only one who recognizes" that ND is back. (At least I think that's what he said.)

2 years 31 weeks ago The nice thing about mgoblog...

...is that you don't have to define "anamoly" (sic) for us. We are quite an educated bunch, dare I say, an anomaly for a sports blog population.

28-23 we win. 23 will happen due to a blocked XP in the 3rd quarter.
