I’m first and foremost a Michigan fan that is also a Lions fan.  For the NFL, I only watch Lions games, so I don’t really feel a vested interest in Jim Harbaugh or the Charger’s performance going forward.  I’m not rooting for or against him. I just don’t really care from this point forward.

Fair point, Petitti probably…

Fair point, Petitti probably played the stronger role, but still at least sets up the “Put up or shut up” scenario for OSU and PSU.

I’ve believed for a while…

I’ve believed for a while the NCAA has thought this wasn’t much of anything and was mostly in damage control mode around public perception.  Remember, the NCAA announced on the same day that there was no evidence that Jim Harbaugh knew about the advanced scouting and that there were no known connections between Ryan Day and the investigative firm.  That always wreaked of a compromise for damage control reasons and for me started to validate that Day did in fact hire the investigators. The NCAA had no desire for this to blow up any bigger than it did.  I’m assuming they also worked with the Big Ten to suspend Harbaugh for The Game in order to placate OSU and basically put them in a “Put Up or Shut Up” scenario.  OSU lost, so now they have to shut up and the NCAA is moving forward by indicating it will be a non-issue for Michigan going forward.  At least that is my takeaway.

With regards to Weiss, the only sensible theory I can come up with is that there was concern unnamed transferring player/s may have emailed team playbook information to an outside account and someone thought it was a good idea to access those players email accounts and check.  That is my theory at least.  I guess time will tell.

Looking for 2 tickets for the Fiesta Bowl and hoping to surprise my youngest son and take him to the game. Figured I would test here before waiting to buy last minute on a site.

[Update]. Tickets bought!  Go blue!

Definitely.  I’ll probably…

Definitely.  I’ll probably be looking for tickets the day of the game or a day before. If I could get them for face value now, I’d be all over them.

I think our common ground is…

I think our common ground is that if black athletes continue to comprise greater than 50% of the players, the coaching numbers will continue to climb and eventually reach that organically.  You can’t look at current player demographics and say that means the coaching ranks need to match because your current players aren’t part of your pool of coaching candidates since they are still playing.  A better measure would be to look at historical data, say 15 to 20 years ago.  I have not looked at those numbers so I don’t know what they would say.

I didn’t contradict myself. …

I didn’t contradict myself.  The 9-5 is a MINIMUM that only applies to early voting, where a minimum had not been previously stated.  That means there might not even be a change in how long the polls stay open because they can still keep them open from  7AM-7PM during early voting if they want.  They also added an additional Saturday to early voting.  The rule does not in fact reduce the hours by 4, but instead guarantees they have to be open at least 8 hours during early voting and at least 12 hours on Election Day.

I civilly addressed the…

I civilly addressed the direct talking points you yourself brought up, so how am I the one dancing around the key issues?  I could ask you why you chose to omit these key issues in your original post if they are so important in the first place?  By accusing me of dancing around the key issues, aren’t you instead actually accusing yourself of dancing around these key issues since I only responded to your original chosen points?

Yes, you said the ID is a non-issue, but since it was referenced in your post, I decided to address it too.  There are a lot of people outraged about the ID requirements even if you claim that is not part of the outrage.

By the way, none of what I wrote came from Foxnews or far right  media.  I stated them as facts because I actually read the bill.  Have you?

Anyway, I am sorry to have offended you by attempting to engage you in a discussion you chose to enter of your own accord.  I’m also sorry for having a different opinion and being a complete waste of your time. It was never my intention to waste such a valuable asset as time. Each of us only get so much of it, so I am sorry to have wasted both yours and mine.  I think it best if we both head our separate ways and have a drink.  I’m going to break out some bourbon and let us say cheers to our Wolverines.  Go blue!

TL:DR  I’m sorry.  Life is short.  Time for Bourbon, any recommendations?  Go Blue!

You are presenting a lot of…

You are presenting a lot of talking points as facts when in that same statement you make it clear that their is no way for you to know if indeed they are facts since you clearly stated they don’t apply to your situation.  You are just regurgitating biased  messaging that is meant to get the masses riled up.

Fact:  Georgia state IDs may be obtained for free for all Georgia residents.

Fact:  Only 3% of Georgia residents don’t have state issued IDs.

Fact: Voting in person already required a photo ID.  Voting by mail / absentee ballot did not. Why shouldn’t absentee ballots have the same requirements that already exist for in person voting?  How is it an undo burden when 97% of Georgia voters have photo IDs and they may be obtained for free?

Fact: Campaigning or attempting to influence voters is legally prohibited within a certain distance of polls.  It is illegal to bribe people to vote a certain way.  Don’t you think the intent of not allowing people to provide voters within 150 feet of the poll with food and water is intended to prevent its abuse to influence voters, similar to let’s say a bagman giving a football recruit a McDonalds bag full of cash.  We know these days that people are just as crazy about their politics as they are their sports teams, so this is certainly plausible.  Poll workers are allowed to provide self service  food and drinks to people in line, and anyone can offer food and drink if more than 150 ft from polls and 25 feet from the line.

Fact:  The voting hour reduction claim has been debunked.  Election Day hours remain unchanged.  7AM-7PM and if you are in line prior to 7PM in Election Day, it is required that you still be allowed to vote.  Only early voting saw potential changes, but not really.  They set a minimum and maximum.  The minimum is 9AM-5PM and the max is 7AM-7PM.  To make up for the potential shorter early voting hours they actually added an extra mandatory Saturday that polls need to be open and made Sundays an optional add.

My recommendation is people should actually read the new law before deciding how to feel about it.

I can support this.  It…

I can support this.  It reads less as a wish list and more being focused strictly on player health, safety, and stability.  I hope they get all the assurances they are looking for.

I agree with DTOW, college…

I agree with DTOW, college sports and professional sports are two completely different business models.  The current college sports business model would need to be completely torn down and set on fire to accommodate a 50-50% revenue split.  This doesn’t even touch any governing laws that might also be at play here.

I see NIL as the easiest and most clear path to getting players paid.  I also think that if players start truly getting paid, then scholarships can get dropped.  If they are making money, they can pay their way through school.  They also can contribute a portion of their pay to the support staff that they get, such as nutritionists, trainers, medical, etc., which is all incurred by the universities now.  The players that go pro commonly say that the facilities and care in college are better than what they get in professional sports, and that is because the schools have a “better” model to reinvest in their athletes. Part of this probably being do to Universities looking to balance their budgets.

I could be wrong, but I think getting everything they are asking for quickly could turn into a be careful what you wish for scenario, at least for a majority of college athletes.

Just to add on to your 2nd…

Just to add on to your 2nd point.  Trump has stated he believes there should be a citizenship path for Dreamers, he just doesn’t think it was legal for it to be done by an executive order.  It is Congress’ job to create that path.  Interestingly, Obama agreed with that sentiment early in his own presidency, going so far to say that an executive order such as DACA wouldn’t be legal.  It was only out of frustration due to Congress’ inability to act that he finally decided on using an executive order.

I keep seeing people saying…

I keep seeing people saying Sling doesn't have the BTN, which was true this past season, but in December it was announced that the BTN was being added ahead of the 2020-2021 college football season.  Unless something has changed, the only downside I saw for Sling has been fixed!

I didn’t say Urban is…

I didn’t say Urban is funneling analysis to all of our opponents.  I was saying that he can offer additional analysis to OSU about all of their B1G opponents, which is a competitive advantage.

By the way, I’m glad my commentary allows you to make yourself feel better.  I’m guessing you must have really needed it since you feel the need to be so condescending.  I’m happy I could help.  Here’s to hoping you can find a better coping mechanism in the future.

Yes, both schools have their…

Yes, both schools have their own analysts, but Meyer’s job with Fox gives him access to additional footage that OSU wouldn’t have, gives him Fox analyst resources that are also looking at opponents footage and providing their opinions, all of which he has access to from his computer in his office at the Woody at OSU.  What is to prevent him from “sharing” that info or to prevent him from leveraging that info when he is consulting with Ryan Day on OSU’s game plans?  Consulting on game plans is part of Meyer’s new role at OSU, so this scenario is plausible and is most likely happening.

I guess the difference is…

I guess the difference is Meyer still maintains an office at the Woody and is on the OSU campus on a weekly basis.  That is what the formal relationship buys you.  Something informal could happen with Woodson, but it could never approach the advantage of a formal arrangement like what Meyer and OSU have.

I enjoy the Urban commentary…

I enjoy the Urban commentary and think that he definitely is good at it, but am I the only one that hates the huge conflict of interest his current OSU athletic department role presents here?  Think about it, he is getting additional resources from Fox to be able to break down what Michigan has been doing all year.  Also for the rest of the B1G as well.  Does anybody think he isn’t using any of this information to help OSU?  My guess is he is actively consulting with Ryan Day and OSU’s other football coaches and leveraging this information.  Great way to ensure his legacy. Even if he isn’t, I think the possibility that it could happen should make it so he can’t hold both positions at the same time.

I wish I had looked here…

I wish I had looked here earlier.  Just bought two tickets tonight to take my son to his first ever game.  Would have been great to instead give that money to a great cause.  Great idea with the donation.

Great band.  We have been…

Great band.  We have been listening to them for a couple of years now.  Caught them in Baton Rouge a few times before they were well known.  My son actually met a few of the band members as well and said they were nice guys.  We are looking forward to seeing them in concert again in less than 2 months!

Biggest problem in this game…

Biggest problem in this game is that Iowa recognized the refs were calling a lot of fouls on defenders in the first half, so they took advantage by attacking the paint and getting calls.  We settled for outside shots instead.  Made adjustments at the half to attack the rim early, only in the second half the refs mostly swallowed their whistles and let them play.  Then they again were calling BS late.  I hate when refs aren’t consistent on their calls the whole game.

Brutal end.  That…

Brutal end.  That intentional foul call completely threw off what could have been a good close end to this game.  Terrible call.  I also think Michigan went to the 3 ball too early. They let Wisconsin off the hook defensively.

I have 7-2 with the two…

I have 7-2 with the two losses going to Ohio State and either MSU or Penn State.  I will admit, this is more wishful thinking than a prediction, but I’m sticking to it.

Wisconsin I was part of that great Wisconsin upset. The odds were long but we pulled it out.
Exactly I’ve been proposing this for a number of days. I’ve just gone rogue with my votes in an attempt to go West. I figure the worst case there is red sees their territories getting hit by a few votes and decides to defend in order to play it safe.
They are in the red alliance Stanford is in the red alliance, so they get a pass from Nebraska and others for now.
We Need to go West Red is letting Wisconsin and Ohio State set up safe spots on the west coast so they all can focus on attacking the east with no real need to defend. We need to threaten their safe zones. Ideally we can wipe out Wisconsin on our side while we head west.
The Red Alliance is Pushing South I think you are right. My opinion is that red is focusing their forces south in an attempt to knock out Florida. From there it is easier pickings to take out our other allies. Personally I wouldn’t mind seeing some of our team start pushing out west to get the red alliance to start to have to spread their forces out.
I Second This I second the Balvenie Caribbean Cask. This is one of my favorites. I mostly go for anything with a sherry cask finish. I also enjoy Tamdhu 10. It has a fancy bottle that looks good on the shelf and tends to catch everyone’s eye.
More like Helmet to side of Facemask My opinion is it is borderline, but probably 99% of the time gets called targeting. It wasn't a direct helmet to helmet hit though. You can tell Bush was trying to go cross body and his helmet caught the side of Frey's facemask causing it to spin on his head.

Regardless, I think putting somebody back in a game when they may have a concussion is more egregious than what at one time used to be considered a good football play. It isn't like the intent of the hit is to play dirty whereas there is clear intent in risking future health issues for putting somebody back in the game.
Woodson's, No Contest Woodson's pick required him to one hand high point the ball against the sideline for a throw the quarterback was trying to make unreachable because he was throwing it away. The degree of difficulty is off the charts here based on just the play. While JD's was impressive, it has been done before and he added to the degree of difficulty by jumping too early.

So in my opinion, the play that tested the defender to his limits should win out. That has to be Woodson's pick because had he made a mistake at any point (jump to early, doesn't get a foot in bounds) he doesn't make that play.
Arkansas To Be 15th Member of The B1G

I'm making my prediction now.  The B1G is in negotiations to add Arkansas as its 15th member.  As part of the agreement to join, Arkansas gets Bielema and assistant coaches to be named later from the B1G.  In return, the B1G gets to again expand it's footprint.

Michigan Is No Longer An Option

I commented on this above and will try to paraphrase it here.

Michigan's policy appears to be the following concerning a verbal commit visiting other schools.

1.  The commit's spot is no longer held in the class and his scholarship offer gets pulled.

2.  Michigan will no longer recruit the former commit.  No second chance.

Whether number 2 above is concrete or not, I don't know.  It is just speculation based on the precedence of Phaoroh Brown and Dawson's high school coach's comments about Dawson's decommitment scenario with Michigan.  "Michigan is no longer recruiting him".

So when Dawson says his rushed decision to commit to Michigan was bad, I think what that means is he burned that bridge and they are no longer an option.  I don't think it has anything to do with MSU or Ohio having more to offer, only that they are still options to be close to home and Michigan is not (current lack of an offer).

It does make me wonder though.  If Dawson now has come to the conclusion that he wants to stay close to home, is there anything he can do to open that door to Michigan again?  Could he get them to reoffer if he was now 100% sure in that choice? (not saying that he is)

It Makes Sense for Dawson

massblue,

Michigan's policy appears to be the following concerning a verbal commit visiting other schools.

1.  The commit's spot is no longer held in the class and his scholarship offer gets pulled.

2.  Michigan will no longer recruit the former commit.  No second chance.

Whether number 2 above is concrete or not, I don't know.  It is just speculation based on the precedence of Phaoroh Brown and Dawson's high school coach's comments about Dawson's decommitment scenario with Michigan.  "Michigan is no longer recruiting him".

So Dawson wants to explore his options and check out schools like Florida and LSU.  I get that.  I also get that he may want to stay closer to home given the loss of his father and wanting to be close to his support system in Michigan.   He probably may want to stay close to home to help support his mom.  Given Michigan's policy above, Michigan is no longer an option if he wants to stay close to home.  This only really leaves Ohio, MSU, and Notre Dame as his best options to stay close to home.

So given the scenario, do you really expect his list not to have Ohio and MSU on it?

At this juncture, since Dawson committed before he was 100% sure of his decision that led to his decommitment and Michigan no longer being an option (probably not his choice), and he just has to do what he thinks is best for him at this point.  There will be no hate or anger from me.  I wish him luck and hope he finds what he is seeking.  I only wish he hadn't committed until he was 100% sure.

Use of Hands or Arms by Defense

I am going to agree that this play in no way affected the outcome of the game, but in my opinion, based on the rule book and the intent of the rules, this was a penalty.  It may not have been PI, but there appears to be a contact interference penalty that governs this.  It can be found in the Rule 9 - Conduct of Players and Others Subject to the Rules.  Specifically, the section that outlines what a defensive player can and can not do with his hands or arms is governed by Section 9.4 of the rule book, amazingly called Use of Hands or Arms by the Defense.  Please see below.  I am only including the parts that seem to apply to this case.

Use of Hands or Arms by Defense

ARTICLE 4.

b. Defensive players may not use hands and arms to tackle, hold or otherwise
illegally obstruct an opponent other than a runner.

Seeing as Roundtree did not have the ball, he therefore could not be construed as the runner.  Clearly the contact made by the corner was meant to obstruct Roundtree's path, making it questionable if not illegal contact.

c. Defensive players may use hands and arms to push, pull, ward off or lift
offensive players obviously attempting to block them. Defensive players
may ward off or legally block an eligible pass receiver until that player
occupies the same yard line as the defender or until the opponent could not
possibly block him. Continuous contact is illegal (A.R. 9-3-4-I and II).

The intent of this section is meant to recognize that an eligible pass receiver may be used as a blocker and that a defensive player may treat them as a potential blocker until such a time they are no longer a threat to block the defensive player.  Since Roundtree occupied the same yard line as the defender and was attempting to get around said defender, he was in no way a threat to block him.  This also appears to indicate that the contact was questionable and illegal contact.

e. When a legal forward pass crosses the neutral zone during a forward-pass
play and a contact foul that is not pass interference is committed beyond the
neutral zone, the enforcement spot is the previous spot. This includes Rule
9-3-4-c (A.R. 7-3-9-I and A.R. 9-3-4-I and II)
.

This portion clearly defines that there are potential contact violations a defender may make beyond the neutral zone that are not pass interference, but still considered illegal contact.  Based on this, the ball does not need to be in the air to make an illegal contact ruling.

Conclusion

Based on video evidence, it is clear that Roundtree's route was obstructed by the defender at a time when the rules seem to indicate it is not permitted.  Roundtree had established himself at the same yard line as the defender, the defender is not allowed to obstruct an opponent other than a runner unless they are a threat as a blocker, and the rules seem to indicate that a defensive illegal contact foul may occur without the need for a pass interference call.

It was a penalty.

*Please keep in mind that I am in no way an expert on this topic.  Just a man with a couple beers in him that thought it would be interesting to read the NCAA rule book and offer his two cents.  Since two cents is not worth that much these days, this write-up probably is'nt either.

Baton Rouge - 16th Most Dangerous City in the U.S. per FBI

I unfortunately live in Baton Rouge now and am always left wondering why LSU would be a huge draw for out of state recruits.  It must be to play in the SEC and a perceived guaranteed path to the NFL (Which is never guaranteed anywere).  The campus is actually pretty and the game atmosphere is insane, but check out some of these beautiful statistics BR has for incoming recruits.

1.  Ranked the 16th most dangerous city in the U.S. per the FBI.  See link for a local article about crime.  Important because the campus is pretty much part of the city, similar to Michigan.

http://theadvocate.com/news/1446948-123/high-homicide-rate-plagues-baton.html

2.  The other nearest city to hang out, New Orleans is ranked the 13th most dangerous U.S. city per the FBI.

3.  Louisiana U.S. STD rankings.  #1 for syphillis, #3 for Chlamydia, #2 for Gonorrhea, and #1 rate of new AIDS cases.  Nothing says come sew your oates young men like these numbers.

4.  As a topper, the area along the Mississippi between New Orleans and Baton Rouge is nicknamed CANCER ALLEY.

Yes people, there is a hell on earth, and it is called Baton Rouge.  Please come play football here!

*I'm sorry if I have offended anyone.  Just reporting statistics.  In all fairness, they do have some of the best food in the country.  So there is that.
