I played at Elbel all the time while in school. Michigan hockey players were frequently playing with us over there.
If you know anybody who plays, let me know and maybe we can get something going.
To add to my post: up until about 6 years ago when the hawks got good, I used to go to every Wings/hawks game and there were 75% Wings fans there. With "Let's go Red Wings" chants drowning out the moronic "Detroit Sucks" chants the mouth breather "fans" are so pleased about. See, there's one difference, we actually cheer on our team rather than just denigrating the opposing team. That's the kinda thing that a Nashville fanbase does, i.e., know-nothing hockey fans.
I got a free ticket from a friend to a hawks/avs game about 10 years ago. Even though I hate both teams, I figured I'd go just to see a pro game. There couldn't have been more than 5000 people in attendence. It was disgraceful for an Original Six team. Tell me again how great that hawks fanbase is. What a joke.
|1 year 8 weeks ago||I've lived in Chicago for 17 years||
I'm from Michigan and played hockey since the late 70s.
After I graduated from UM in 95, I lived in San Fran for a year as I thought of going to grad school at either Cal or Stanford (top programs for my field of study). That didn't turn out and I eventually needed to get a real job to support myself. But in the meantime, I found multiple places to play inline hockey in SF neighborhoods as well as an indoor rink there, not far from Giants' stadium.
I ended up moving to Chicago as I had some contacts here and family still in Detroit area. I was pretty happy to be moving back to an Original Six city, thinking I'd get all kinda hockey action here. Well, turns out, if I talked to anyone about hockey here, they looked at me like I was from the moon. They don't give the least amount of fucks about it unless their team is in first place.
I've only found one place to play outdoor inline hockey here and that was from some random Craigslist post I found, and they only played at 10 in the morning on Sundays on the far north side of the city. You'll never find a group of people just playing in some neighborhood here. People don't play or care about the game in the city. I did end up playing at Johnny's Ice House for a few years when I had some friends from Detroit who played here.
I realize that old man Wirzt did plenty to hurt hockey in this city, but you are full of shit if you think the people here care the slightest about it when the Hawks are no good. It is the biggest bandwagon population in professional sports.

Sure he's got a forever contract, but the cap hit is limited and Holland has been all about forever contracts. We need a top 6 forward to compete in the playoffs this year. We'll have plenty of money off the books to worry about defensemen next year.
He'll provide the physicality and scoring that Z isn't ever going to -- I'm convinced he's got a perpetual back problem that will forever prevent him from being a significant "offensive" factor on this team again, his defense is just swell.
Q: What do you call the area of a hockey rink below the circles and outside of the trapezoid?

|2 years 36 weeks ago||k, so now are we gonna say...||
"Rich Rodriguez could come in and not fix some of the problems on offense"
|2 years 37 weeks ago||Ugh. So many words.||
To put it very precisely and simply:
Lots of low % shots = few goals.
If you want to do the proper analysis, which I've thought of but don't know if the data is there and don't really have the free time, plot out shot location per game for the last 3-4 years.
Just watching the games I can see we are getting all our shots from the boards, from the point and from at or behind the goal line. Consistently, game in and out. Those shots don't score. End of story.
If you don't take shots from inside the dots and take the puck to the net, you don't score. Simple.
|2 years 37 weeks ago||I just can't not want to explode the universe right now.||
I had given up on the game after their last score. And I felt calm and accepting about that.

I was going to throw out all the caveats, but they were absolutely lacksidaisical and without technique. That's been the case with virtually all US teams. That's why I say you may need to start very young to get the proper technique and mindset developed.
Regardless of the lineup, a country with the resources and population of the US should be able to dominate a team like Costa Rica and be able to at least "compete" with the best teams in all of the Americas, not just North and Central America. We have never been able to play near the level of a Brazil or Argentina, or probably Uraguay and Paraguay.
|2 years 46 weeks ago||Sad.||
Forget Mexico, apparently our new greatest rival is Costa Rica.
Jurgen certainly has his work cut out for him, perhaps it just can't be done in this country without a decades' long plan that starts at the very lowest levels of footy.

With Coach Rod, it seemed like he was lazy and didn't work hard enough to prove that he's really a football player. At the same time, the defensive coaching motivation was about as bad as it could be for a guy like that who needs to be taught in year one that he needs to change his attitude.
It looks like the current staff is able to provide all the motivation in the world, but it may be too late to make a difference in his career.
A pity, really.

|3 years 4 weeks ago||Being based in Chicago...||
I can't count or recall all the travel problems I've had, particularly trying to get back to Detroit for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Detroit to Chicago is a 45 minute flight. I have sat on the tarmac for 3 hours in Detroit, with someone tugging on the back of my seat the entire time.
I've had flights cancelled and had to go home after waiting for 5-6 hours in the airport. At least when I'm stuck in the airport, rather than on a plane, I can get a beer or 10.
I am almost always delayed for longer than the flight duration no matter the weather. I've also had luggage not show up and have to be delivered a few times.
Flying misery is so common that my friends and family are actually surprised when I land on time. Lots of times the flight crew just doesn't show up and we have to wait for another crew to depart.
Good times. I always look forward to what awaits me at the airport.

has been around for a few years now. The Wings have gotten screwed by it several times. It's part of the game now and I knew that goal wouldn't count.
It was pretty close in real time, slowing it down just makes it look worse. You can tell the point at which the ref would say it was covered and was whistling the play based on that.
Not saying it's right, just the way it is now and you have to deal.

|3 years 21 weeks ago||I see the entire ice surface,||
I may be missing some of the crowd to the sides of the boards. I don't care about the rink besides the ice surface.
The San Jose game with the FSND feed was just fine, did they only switch over to widescreen in the couple days since then?
|3 years 21 weeks ago||I pay for the NHL Center Ice package||
and get FSN Detroit feeds all the time. FSN Detroit and virtually all "foreign" teams display a scoreboard graphic in the center of the screen. I don't think I'm missing any part of the hockey rink, they are merely choosing to broadcast their (NHL Network) graphics to the specifications of an HD TV, thus purposely excluding non-HD viewers.
|3 years 21 weeks ago||That was a brutal call...||
New NHL, yadda, yadda, yadda.
|3 years 21 weeks ago||I'm on a CRT that weighs 80lbs,||
no "fill screen" capabilities.
I guess my point is that I'm watching the "non-HD" channel of NHL network, but they are pushing only the HD feed to both their channels, so I don't see everything.
I'm a professional web developer, for the most part I need to still code down to IE6 standards when I work for corporations today.
So, with that in mind, NHL network (who is dying for any audience they can get) is only pushing HD technology so that much of their audience will not be able to see their HD-based graphic positioning? Is that a good decision, or are they killing themselves?
|3 years 21 weeks ago||No,||
I don't have HD, I assume that is why this is happening, but they have both a normal and HD channel on my cable. Why would they push only the HD feed, and why would they not know that half of their viewers wouldn't be able to see <Graphic force left of wide HD screen/ ???
|3 years 21 weeks ago||I'm watching on TV,||
can't reformat the resolution.

Hey, does someone need to go check on Denarded? Maybe he fell into a crevasse during the storm.
|3 years 24 weeks ago||I dunno, something tells me...||
that all this notariety may be going to his head.
|3 years 24 weeks ago||Dear God, Mariotti!||
I've been in Chicago for the past 15+ years, and I read the Sun Times every day at lunch.*
Mariotti was the absolute worst! I recall his "going away to join the l33t innerwebs while you dweebs in print die off" column. Boy am I glad he's gone to die a cyber death.
*The reason I read that has nothing to do with quality of journalism, but rather because it was tabloid fold style whereas the Tribune was double fold (has now gone tabloid) and was too big to page through in a small area when you had a sandwich in one hand.

(But, shhhhhhhhhh, don't tell Hackney!)
|3 years 24 weeks ago||Sure beats that Hackney||
Sure beats that Hackney asshole.
|3 years 24 weeks ago||So, you make my point for me and we are in agreement.||
The original posit was:
If someone can provide a reasonable dispute to this, I'm all ears."
I think we've clearly provided a reasonable dispute that "high population of black people does not (necessarily) = best football players"
|3 years 24 weeks ago||Per your article...||
"In the National Football League, 42% of the players are black."
That doesn't sound like a "dominance" to me.
Why aren't the best atheletes from NYC, Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, or other major northern cities with large or primarily black populations?
I say it's more due to the emphasis of football as the #1 sport down south, than purely black population. The north of the country has plenty of atheletes that go into hockey, soccer, or any number of winter sports that don't exist in the south.
|3 years 24 weeks ago||I was getting the Detroit broadcast on NHL Center Ice.||
Did the long camera angles look like they were from outer space?
San Jose is like that, too. The cameras are in the rafters or something. I don't get it with a Canadian team. You can hardly see the puck when it's down low.
The main camera in The Joe is like 16 rows up.
|3 years 24 weeks ago||This is a good read...|

Now that's a good dog!
|3 years 24 weeks ago||I tried...||
alas, my webcam quality is shit and between that and the web feed, you couldn't see anything happening other than the outline of the tree.
There's always good stuff going on out there, maybe I'll have to buy a quality digital video camera that could properly record it.
BTW, Dell support is absolute shit (though I do like their computers). I couldn't find my webcam software online and had to dig around to find the install disk I got with the thing 3 years ago.
|3 years 24 weeks ago||I'm working on it. Signed up at ustream.||
I think I removed some web cam components so need to update, but I'll get something up if I can.
This storm isn't going to stop for at least 12 hours.
|3 years 24 weeks ago||There is a large ominous tree, like out of a Tim Burton movie,||
across the street. I'm on an alley, so the wind isn't moving down a tunnel of buildings, it's moving in all directions, like liquid. The snow is fine, so it is acts as smoke in the wind, frequently moving upwards. And it's all colored orange.
Even if I had a good still camera, it wouldn't capture what you'd see.
It's gonna get mighty cold if the power goes out.
|3 years 24 weeks ago||Too bad,||
this shit is gettin' crazy and it's not even bad yet.
The streetlight is orangish, so it adds a nice creepy hue. Y'all should see this!
|3 years 24 weeks ago||Don't forget the class of cat haters, like me,||
who tend to stop breathing and die when around cat hair.

I guess this is the true problem with medicine in this country. Most people only go to see a professional when there is an emergency — not as a preventative measure — because they can't afford either the expense or to take time off work.
I've always had really good teeth so I hope it will work out well.
|3 years 25 weeks ago||This has all been with the same dentist.||
I guess sometimes one worries more about how they are going to eat and pay rent next month than when they will get their tooth crowned.
Unfortunately, I see dentistry as a luxury expense compared to other basic necessities. I know that's not the best thought process, but it's reality.
I have a good job and get paid well, but I've been mostly consulting over the last few years and have just recently gotten new, reasonable insurance.
|3 years 25 weeks ago||That's the "long story" part I didn't want to get into.||
I had the root canal (by the dentist) about 2 1/2 years ago and my dental insurance was maxed for the year, so we decided we'd put off the crown until the next January and go with the temp cap until then.
Then I got laid off and lost insurance, so I've had the temp for all this time. Last November I bit into a peppercorn or something and felt the temp break. I've had a hole in the tooth for the last 3 months until they finally filled it and re-prepped it 2 weeks ago.
Thanks Jeebus we don't have universal health care in this country! Goddamn mooches always trying to take care of themselves in a timely manner!
|3 years 25 weeks ago||Cuz google doesn't respond with specific information...||
|3 years 25 weeks ago||Good info, thanks!||
I'm wondering if they'll need to refit for the crown or if it will be good to go with whatever impression they've already made.
|3 years 25 weeks ago||I'm supposed to get the crown in 2 weeks,||
It's being made by the lab.
|3 years 25 weeks ago||Maybe 1/16 inch of tooth was in the cap.||
It's the lower, 2nd to the rear molar.
Thanks, this sounds much more promising than I had first thought.
And I already called and left a message with the dentist. Hopefully he can get me in to look at it next week.
|3 years 25 weeks ago||That would be great...||
if that were the case.
If nothing else, I'd hate to have had to pay for the crown work only to find out they're gonna remove it anyway and charge me even more.
|3 years 25 weeks ago||It's clean...||
like I said, about 1/4 inch exists as a nub above the gumline. The temp cap came of with the split halves of the top attached. I think the crack was only in the top, not the full length of the tooth.

or yer dummer?
P.S., OOOOOOHHH, "World" history. Look who's a fancy lad!
|3 years 25 weeks ago||I proudly represent...||
I just meant I don't live there anymore.
But I do not like that we get classified as being "just like Canadians" - not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just that we have our own disfunctions.
When I was in high school, our history book showed a generic map of North America where the U.P. was actually colored as if it was a part of Canada.
|3 years 25 weeks ago||Considering that Detroit is a river away,||
and the U.P. is the greatest lake away. No, it doesn't and shouldn't count.
|3 years 25 weeks ago||I think the main problem is...||
there's not enough college teams named "Rough Riders"
|3 years 25 weeks ago||Don't worry li'l bugger,||
we'll reboot ya.
|3 years 25 weeks ago||I don't like the way you said that.||
But I'll give you a point anyway, just cuz.

|3 years 25 weeks ago||Lol,||
actually, Lidstrom was talking about picking Ward to get some support from the Carolina fans.
|3 years 25 weeks ago||Next year they should do what we used to do...||
throw sticks in a pile and just toss them, one at a time, in either direction. They could have separate piles for forwards, defense and goalies.
Note to all jersey manufacturers, numbers on the front suck hard. Stop it!
