Darryl Dawkins preceded my fanhood by a few years, but he was featured in a basketball dunks and bloopers movie I watched about a million times as a kid. He was taking about breakaway rims, that were introduced because of his proclivity to shatter backboards, and said "they can still be broken! If you hit it from the side, it's gonna break!" He seemed like a really cool dude. RIP, Chocolate Thunder.

BYU undergrad and UM med, so I root for BYU just as much as Mich. Honestly not sure how I'm going to resolve that one this year. I think I'm going to be sad regardless what happens...

As I said in my post, I'm glad I don't have to make that decision, but if you're pressing me for what I'd do, then no, I don't think I would have drafted him. It's not a "punishment", it's a business decision. And people face ramifications in employment beyond what the legal system would impose all the time, so equating the two is silly. People get fired for offensive tweets on a regular basis, for example.

Seems like maybe you are the one who doesn't get it. This information is relevant not because "OMG he said rude things!" but because A) it provides additional evidence that he actually did hit her (the Seahawks have tried to imply he didn't), and B) he lied to police afterward and tried to manipulate his way out. Both should be relevant to anyone trying to judge whether they should take a chance on the guy. I'm glad I don't have to make that decision, and I don't pretend to know all the facts about this case, but if these things are true, they just make Clark look that much worse, and the Seahawks' position that much more dubious.

Here's a "cool story, bro", but it pertains. I went to BYU undergrad, and knew a guy named Todd Mortensen. Great guy, backup QB on the Football team, but rarely saw the field, and when he did he made everyone groan. He subsequently transfers as a fifth-year senior to San Diego and plays under a first-time head coach named Jim Harbaugh, blows up, and spends a few years as a backup on the Lions and Patriots. Point is this: Harbaugh has a track record of taking guys others have failed with, or who have flown under the radar, and turning them into really good players. There is plenty of reason for optimism that at least one player on the roster next year will be a solid-to-above-average QB by the end of the year.

Harbaugh is absolutely selling hope:
- Hope for a quick turnaround for a long-suffering team: San Diego, Stanford, SF 49ers
- Hope for league championships: 2 with San Diego, 2 division championships with SF, 1 NFC championship
- Hope for Postseason success: 1 Orange Bowl Victory (same number of career BCS bowl appearances/victories as Dantonio), 3-straight NFC championship appearances, 1 Superbowl appearance (Have you coached a team to the Superbowl, mister Dantonio?)
So yes, Harbaugh is selling hope. Lots of hope. There might be some results in there, too.

Cool story, bro: I went to BYU in the early 2000's and Todd Mortensen was a casual acquaintance. Great guy, really smart, but I never thought he had ANY future as a quarterback. Whenever he got limited PT at BYU, he sucked. That Harbaugh turned him into a beast as a fifth-year senior who got roster spots on pro teams is very impressive to me.

Just wow. He could have killed that guy. He hits his head the wrong way, or snaps his neck the wrong way, he's dead.

These types of deals are common for independent schools, so they know they have something set up, but they will generally have an opt out clause in the event of, say, a BCS invite. It's similar to mid-major conferences that have deals with certain bowls but if they get a BCS invite they can go to that bowl instead.

Very interesting play. I think the call was clearly right, as most have said, and I think it was mostly Saltalamacchia's fault (I think his play has been shaky at best in the WS, starkly contrasted with Molina, who is a rock behind the plate). No one has commented, though, about Molina's timid slide home. He didn't even get to the base and barely made any contact with the catcher. The right play for him in this instance is to absolutely truck Salty so he can't make the throw in the first place. The Cards were lucky how things worked out, but not knowing the outcome beforehand, Molina should have blasted him. Wonder if he didn't do it because he's also a catcher...

Thanks for the post, agree on pretty much everything. Sorry to hear about your Dad, sounds like an awesome guy - nice tribute, too.

Any school in America will fire their coach without thinking twice if they have a couple of bad seasons. Why should coaches be more committed to the school than the school is to them? Yeah, I know, the kids, but the players know that's how it is, and heck, even the best players take the opportunity to leave early when they can.
|2 years 21 weeks ago||Agreed||
I've only owned one bball jersey (when I was 17), and felt like a tool whenever I wore it. Not doing that again.
|2 years 24 weeks ago||Zags||
See my comment above - BYU could beat Gonzaga in their tournament. I'd give them a 30% chance.
|2 years 24 weeks ago||Gonzaga||
It's a bit of a long shot, but BYU could potentially beat Gonzaga in the WCC tournament. It takes place in Vegas, which is practically a home game for BYU (tons of Mormons, and close enough to Provo that their students will be well-represented). BYU lost to the Zags at home by five last week. If Gonzaga were to lose in their tournament, I think they'd lose their #1 seed.
|2 years 24 weeks ago||Crean||
And Tom Crean will be telling his players it's all about "The Team, The Team, The Team" and crediting Harbaugh for the phrase. When he said that after they beat us earlier this year, I wanted to reach out and choke him through the TV set.

That's why you never, EVER record a sports event without an extra hour of record time, because they do sometimes run long, and occasionally very long. Speaking from sad experience.

Jazz, yes please. Jazz fans are still mourning the loss of Deron Williams.
|2 years 50 weeks ago||Denard is not running 30 times||
I think Brian is right on most of the time, but the prediction that Denard will run the ball 30 times in this game is ridiculous, IMHO. If Michigan really is going to blow AF away, why in the world would Borges risk Denard's health and run him repeatedly, especially if Fitz is back? Historically with Borges we mostly see heavy deployment of Denard dilithium only when the rest of the offense isn't working. Otherwise it's just sprinkled in here and there.
I predict Denard runs the ball ~10 times, and comes out of the game in the late 3rd quarter if we have a comfortable lead, at which point Bellomy straps on his helmet and we get our first real look at him, which will be interesting.
|3 years 35 weeks ago||Nice one||
We have a recruit (Houma) coming from Utah this year, smart guy.
|3 years 37 weeks ago||Comment||
I don't think that picture is Denard's staph "boo boo". Wasn't it near his elbow on his throwing arm, not his left hand? Remember the big bandage he wore on his arm for a while?
|3 years 39 weeks ago||Love this guy.||
If I had a son looking to play college ball, I'd want him to play for Hoke. So many people have commented this season about what a great group of guys this team is, and how loyal they are to each other, and that starts at the top.
