Two words for your son...

B10 roadies are brutal.  I'd

B10 roadies are brutal.  I'd take a split right now against PSU and Wisky.  Both will be tough games.

Don't get as mad

I enjoy the good times and move on much quicker with the bad times.  Recruiting news never bothers me.  Love it when we snag a kid and couldn't care less when we lose a kid.

Losing to OSU stiil eats at me though.  I'm better at moving on, but those losses still stick with me longer than I'd like.

I'm a HS guidance counselor

I'm a HS guidance counselor at a large Michigan HS that has sent multiple kids into Ivy League schools.  I don't have all the answers, but I can say this......

1.  IB is generally better respected than AP.  But it is largely because AP is watered down in many schools.  Probably is not the case at your district.

2.  This decision won't have much to do with wether or not she gets into Stanford or Harvard.  The elite colleges in this country are insanely difficult to get into without a hook.  Stanford accepts about 5% of their apps a year.  Harvard declines more valedictorians than it accepts.

3.  At our school the kids getting into UM are 30+ on ACT and over a 4.0 GPA.  The one trend we've seen in the last couple of years is kids with lower numbers who are getting in have a sibling at UM.  Could be a fluke, but it's seemed to help the last two years.

4. Be careful with dual enrollment and Community College.  It does not wow the admissions folks like some think.  Max out the AP offerings before considering it.  An of AP course at our HS is tougher than most courses at a community college.

5.  The Big 3 when applying to most any college will be grades in college prep classes, SAT/ACT results and course rigor.  It'll make up at least 80% of their decision.  But to get into Stanford (NW, Yale, etc) you'll also need to flourish in the other areas; letters of rec, essays, xtra curricular, leadership, deep commitments, etc.  If IB is so demanding that it does not allow for a kid to do interesting stuff beyond HS I would view that negatively.  By the way, we are an AP school.  \

Good luck!

Will add..

I think the SEC stadiums are louder stereotype is a myth.  Been to multiple big games at  Bama and the noise level was fine, but not crazy.  I've still never heard anything close to UTL 1.  Not saying M Stadium is loud in general, but I think most stadiums have average noise levels. Arkansas was the loudest SEC venue I've attended.

Went to Iowa for the Forcier/Denard game. Loved it. Nice college town, friendly locals, winnable game.

ACC

Three thoughts..

1.  I don't think the ACC is going to be in play for B10 expansion.  We caught the perfect storm with adding Maryland.  UVA and UNC are not selling their identity regardless of TV revenue.  I believe we are left with what is left of the B12.

2.   I also think hoops is irrelevant in these decisions.  It's largely a regional sport that does not generate enough revenue to warrant conference admission on its own.  UCONN or Kansas would need to offer significantly more than hoops to get into the B10.

3.  I don't want Texas.  They are like dating a hot, dumb chick.  It looks great on the surface but behind the curtain it is a nightmare.  Way too high maintenance for my taste.  I think everyone in the B10 would end up hating them quickly.  I also don't think the TX fanbase wants the B10 which only exasperates the above scenario.

In short, I am open to smart, calucated expansion.  But I just don't see a good available fit out there.

'97 OSU punt return

Outside of the birth of my children and marrying my wife that might have been the happiest 15 minutes of my life.  Absolute perma-grin after he took that punt back.

Washington State +2.5 AZ State

MSU and Utah lines seem like sucker bets.  I'll be staying away from both.

In regards to B10 title game....

I say put it at Solider Field at noon.

The game needs an identity.  Lucas Oil is a sterile setting and the night time slot competes with SEC title game.  Put it outside, at noon in a large city.  Give it some midwestern flavor.

Frita Batidas.  Get the

I also like Hunter House still.  More sliders than actual burgers, but a simple yet tasty option.

This is part of being a sports fan.  It blows,  but it makes the good times (whenever they might come) all that more enjoyable.

I like Phil Steele

But he's wrong on this one.

Many of the factors people are using to promote MSU are no longer applicable.  This is a different team with a different mindset.  I quietly love our chances tomorrow.

OSU is the defending natioanl

OSU is the defending natioanl champs and they've dominated us for over a decade.  Pardon me for not wanting to talk smack to them right now.  I like our chances this year, but its a long road back before I'm talking smack to them.

fave pick of week

TX +16.5 Oklahoma:  public is all over OU.  but its a huge rivalry game and tx has played some teams close before tcu.  plus, tx has just seem a similar offense and strong is on the ropes.  toss in ou's penchant for inconsisten play under Stoops and there are a lot of factors to grab a ton of points.

Pitino = cooked

I don't see anyway Pitino survives this.  It's evertything that is wrong with college athleitcs.  It's a terrible look for Louisville and the ACC.  Youir image is too valualbe.  Louisville won't have a choice.

Getting off topic...

But if WVA beats Pitt in '07 the different paths for UM, OSU, LSU and WVA are potentially massive.

WVA:  never loses RR

OSU:  likely wins another NC and alters JT's image forever

UM:  never lands RR....likely lands Miles

LSU:  gets a new coach

Another tidbit on Pryor...

There is a good chance Jim Tresell is still coach at OSU if we land Pryor.  The allegations against OSU/Tressel are less significant if they don't include the star QB.

Oh God....have mercy!!

Oh God....have mercy!!

Agreed, I don't know you.

Agreed, I don't know you.  But dumping the Lions for the Packers (assuming you are a MI native) is weak sauce.

To the new Packers fan...

Are you also a Cubs fan now?

No, the Lions don't bring me a lot of joy.  But I would get less joy from an artficial relationship with a team that I have never given any emotion or love to before.  I cannot imagine dumping a team for a more successful team and trying to fake the enthusiasm.  People who dump their childhood/home state team for a "better" team likely have grit and resiliency issues in life.

Tom Herman

I'm surprised the loss of Herman is not mentioned more when discussing OSU's offensive woes.

Also, I think a team with this much NFL talent is harder to keep reeled in as the season progresses.  I think by the end of bowl season OSU has two losses.

Hmm...

I'm not sure I believe that.  Not out to defend Brandon, but I don't see him offering to not play UM-OSU every year.  That is a PR disaster and even Brandon would realize that.

This strikes me as Bacon continuing to pile on Brandon. It's also one of the reasons I likely won't read his latest book.  It is so wildly skewed against Brandon that it is no longer a balanced account of what really happened.  I get that Bacon hates Brandon, but it's reached the point where it is negatively affecting Bacon's validity.

small and subtle

I refuse to draft Cleveland Browns or OSU alums in FF

I rip on Lebron James

I never pick Ohio mid-majors in March

Refuse to wear anything close to red/gray together

some supplemental commentary....

I've lived up north and on the west side of the state.  A little commentary..

Traverse City:  Not sure they are snobby, but their big issue is they think TC is the greatest place in the state yet many of them have no idea how to navigate GR or Detroit.  Up north is nice to visit, but boring to live.

East Grand Rapids:  Snobby, but also established.  EGR folks are confident but not out to impress you.  They are not fake.  Which leads me to.....

Forest Hills/Grandville:  These two places, in my opinion, are snobby.  I like both, but they are loaded with materialistic folks who are new to the "upper class scene."  This is where snobbery is at its worst.  They think they are more than they really are.

I will always be a loyal DD

I will always be a loyal DD supporter.  Made far more good moves than poor moves.  I tend to think the "firing" was more of a mutual decision.

You didn't ask for Top 5, but

You didn't ask for Top 5, but I give you Top 5 anyway:

1.  Desmond

2.  Woodson (close)

3.  John Kolesar

4.  Tripp Welbourne

5.  Mike Hart (would contentd for #1 except for OSU record)

I've thought for two hours

Put me in the "No Thanks" camp.  I understand the stance of the supporters.  This is fresh, cutting-edge, risky, stylish, youthful. etc.  I get it and respect that take.

But I cannot shake two things:

1.  This is uncessary . We had Harbs and Nike.  That's all we needed at the time.  Life was good.  No need to rock it.

2.  It's girlish.  Maybe wimply.  Maybe soft.  Pick your adjective.  I wager its similar.  This is like naming your son Skyler.  Sure, it's risky and new . But it's also soft and risky.  It's like a 40 year old man driving a Volkswagen convertible.  The idea is intriguing, but daily execution is difficult.  It just does not fit.  You don't put a basketball player on arguable a top 5 CFB.

Mike Boren had no choice but

Mike Boren had no choice but to convert to a full-time Buckeye.  He was w/out a home.

I'm in a two QB league also.

I'm in a two QB league also.  A few thoughts that are bound to be incorrect.

1.  In a 2 QB league if you have a chance at Luck or Rodgers do it.  They are safer than a RB and are a tier above guys like Romo, Newton, Ryan, etc.

2.  If you are late in round 1 don't be afraid to draft two stud WRs.  They get hurt less and always hold their value.

3.  Embrace boring picks.  Justin Forsett is a good example of this.

Wow!

I'm baffled.  DD did a ton more good than bad for Tigers.  I could see DD wanting to pursue other avenues.  But for the Tigers to fire him?  Strikes me as a terrible idea.
