3 weeks 5 days ago This is what they do at the

This is what they do at the university of Oregon and Oregon state. I live in Eugene. Granted, the tickets are "free" and you get them the week if the game. Still, if you don't swipe your card (ie miss) two games you got tickets for, you lose privileges for the rest if the year. And if you do it the following year penalties get worse. No fing around at Autzen.

4 weeks 3 days ago So the other networks get a

So the other networks get a pass for just blindly posting a story CNN was running? CNN at least claimed to have a source. All the others were even worse because they just copied the story. Not that I'm happy with any of them at the moment.

8 weeks 18 hours ago Time for YOU to hang it up

Time for YOU to hang it up buddy. Go sleep it off.

8 weeks 1 day ago Yes I agree that this is

Yes I agree that this is definitely not a foregone conclusion. Part of me thinks that Michigan is so hot right now that no one can stand in their way.

But I've had my heart broken enough times to know better. And of course it is ND, so anything can happen. I'm still stinging from that 2008(?) Frozen Four game.

8 weeks 1 day ago I am out of state as well,

I am out of state as well, but I get the game on FCSA which I am guessing is Fox College Sports Atlantic? I pay for the extra sports package from Comcast though, so I'm not sure if that helps you.

8 weeks 5 days ago Be careful jumping in the

Be careful jumping in the PAC12 bandwagon. There is a reason they were all under seeded. It's because their conference is crap. Really, really bad.

I wouldn't have picked Oregon or Cal in an 8/9 matchup so I'm certainly not picking them to beat a 5!

10 weeks 1 day ago I thought I heard that he may

I thought I heard that he may need surgery for it to fully heal. Maybe he figured it was best to wait until after the draft so that he could focus training? Not sure.

10 weeks 2 days ago Groundhog Day...best ever.

Groundhog Day...best ever.

10 weeks 2 days ago So this means Denard will win

So this means Denard will win right? Any chance Swope got more legit votes?

I'm assuming the answer is no because Denard had a big lead a few days ago. But I also feel like this allows EA sports to pretty much pick whoever they want to win and cover it up as a "recount".

10 weeks 3 days ago This contest is the

This contest is the difference in me buying the game or not. Wish there was something I could do!!! Argh!

10 weeks 6 days ago I was actually at the

I was actually at the rebranding ceremony tonight in Corvallis because I work at OSU (not that OSU). I like the new look personally. Not something I'd want Michigan to do obviously. But for the Beavs I think it works.

Also, love the hashtag they used: #rebeaved.

11 weeks 6 days ago I also think its important to

I also think its important to consider that home court advantage is not just about the crowd.

The home team does not have to travel and practices on that floor with those rims every day. The fans definitely play a role but there are other factors. And I didn't even mention the refs.

14 weeks 1 day ago Wisconsin is coming off a

Wisconsin is coming off a double OT game that was played the day after our last game. I think that is a factor.

Michigan handles their business in this one.

63-54 Michigan victory!

15 weeks 3 days ago It's all about the money. I

It's all about the money. I worked for the sports marketing department when they made the switch and the high ups sat us all down and explained why we went Adidas.

The contract at the time was bigger than NDs and had a clause that would increase ours to match any college that signed a better deal with Adidas down the road. Pretty incredible.

But I'm with all of you who think the money isn't worth this derp fest. The ripping and mismatched jerseys are what kills me. Unacceptable.

16 weeks 4 days ago I'm more worried about

I'm more worried about Illinois shooting 60% from 3 against us. We are their #1 rival after all.

17 weeks 1 day ago Rogue is fantastic. So it

Rogue is fantastic. So it Deschutes. And pretty much all the Oregon beer.

I live in Eugene, and I'm spoiled rotten.

17 weeks 4 days ago As another Wolverine living

As another Wolverine living in Duck country, I agree with everything you just said.

18 weeks 4 days ago Ya I'd rather this happen

Ya I'd rather this happen tonight than score 95, and then lay an egg @OSU or @Minny.

But when and if this team goes cold against a top tier B1G team, it could be ugly. Especially if the other team is hitting the 3 like Illinois or Minny do occasionally.

Overall though, I think Michigan was just a little less focused than normal as they look forward to the real start of the B1G season.

Beat Ohio!

18 weeks 5 days ago I'm surprised with the

I'm surprised with the Wisconsin ranking. They lost 5 games this year too or 6? And only made the Rose because of I eligible teams.

I also think ND will end up lower than that. But I understand the ranking based on this season.

19 weeks 1 day ago The problem is, if the

The problem is, if the accusations turn out to be true then oregon would have to fire him. Because it means he knowingly deceived both the university and the NCAA. I'm sure he could still get another job after that. But his stock would plummet. He leaves now, and no one will bat an eye when the violations come down. As long as he is winning with his new team. See Pete Carrol.

21 weeks 12 hours ago We need some more from the

We need some more from the OSU game. I know we lost, but Denard's run and some of the big hits by our defense were still very enjoyable moments.

23 weeks 5 days ago On another basketball note,

On another basketball note, NC State just beat UConn on a neutral floor. Good to see a team Michigan beat take down a team that beat Sparty. I know the transitive thing doesn't work. But it's still good for NC State to get that win.

24 weeks 3 days ago Since when does competing

Since when does competing with A&M equal koolaide? Give me a break.

Our defense will give us a chance in the bowl game, just like it did against ND and OSU. If our offense can put together a decent game and limit turnovers we can win. I for one would rather play A&M than Georgia's NFL defense.

24 weeks 3 days ago Looks like I was right in my

Looks like I was right in my previous comment. It would definitely be better if you weren't making comments. With all due respect of course.

24 weeks 3 days ago With all due respect, I wish

With all due respect, I wish you'd never say anything else on this blog ever again. It would be a better place.

I said with all do respect, so you can't take offense to my comment.

24 weeks 6 days ago If you weren't happy after

If you weren't happy after that game, you need to get some perspective.

It was a win over a rival we hadn't beat in 4 years. Not happy? Holy cow. If you were an ND fan you'd probably be depressed right now from all the poor performances they had this season. Give me a break!

24 weeks 6 days ago Oregon is likely to be losing

Oregon is likely to be losing their coach in the next few weeks from what I am hearing here in Eugene. It seems to be a foregone conclusion that Chip is NFL bound.

25 weeks 21 hours ago So one good year makes ND as

So one good year makes ND as relevant as us? Ok buddy.

In 2006 we were 3 points and a voter screw job out if the title game. If ND had to play a top 2 team this year on the road do you think they'd be where they are? Nope.

It's been an up and down 10 years. But there are lots of good moments too. 2003, 2004 big ten titles. 2006 11-0 start. 2007 Cap One Bowl win. 2011 11-2 Sugar Bowl Champs.

People always get too high after big wins and too low after big losses. Just keep some perspective please.

25 weeks 1 day ago Knowing Hoke, I'm sure he

Knowing Hoke, I'm sure he found Meyer at some point after the game. Probably back in the locker rooms.

This is a non-issue. Which makes perfect sense why Section 1 posted it.

25 weeks 4 days ago I'll be recording this and

I'll be recording this and watching it after Michigan Bball dominates on the hardwood.

Great way to start a long weekend!

Beat Ohio!

25 weeks 5 days ago Is this for real? What game

Is this for real? What game is that from???

25 weeks 5 days ago Heiko and Chantel...a match

Heiko and Chantel...a match made in heaven? Oh ya and Borges too!

25 weeks 6 days ago Didn't UCLA get an exception

Didn't UCLA get an exception to this rule last season? I thought they ended up 6-7 because of their loss in the PAC12 championship game but still made it to a bowl.

26 weeks 16 hours ago Agreed. I'm kinda surprised

Agreed. I'm kinda surprised that game isn't OTB this week.

The game is meaningless for one team and means everything to the other. And Stanford is still a dog? Weird.

26 weeks 17 hours ago Let it go man. Let it go.

Let it go man. Let it go. Beat Ohio!

26 weeks 17 hours ago Yep, it was at Autzen last

Yep, it was at Autzen last year when Oregon played UCLA.

If Stanford wins next week it will be in Palo Alto, if Stanford loses and Oregon wins it will be in Eugene, and if both Stanford and Oregon lose it will be in Westwood.

26 weeks 18 hours ago I completely agree that

I completely agree that Stanford is an excellent team, and UCLA will have their hands full in the PAC12 Champ Game regardless of who they play.

But I'd rather play the Cardinal on the Farm than the Ducks on the Pond (Autzen) every day of the week and twice on Saturdays. Oregon had their slip up this year. I doubt they will have another, unless it is against an SEC team in the MNC.

If UCLA is smart, they will take their chances with Stanford.

26 weeks 19 hours ago I actually 100% think this

I actually 100% think this will happen.

I don't think UCLA will throw the game in an obvious manner. Or bench their starters like a 14-1 NFL team would.

But I do think that UCLA knows that they have a much better shot at the Rose Bowl against Stanford. They also know that the game next week is meaningless for them (unless Oregon loses again in which case UCLA could host the PAC12 champ game). Would you really risk injury to guys like Hundley or Franklin in a meaningless game? Imagine the press you would get if you lost your starting QB the week before the biggest game for UCLA in decades.

Stanford on the otherhand is playing for their Rose Bowl lives. It is a must win, so I highly doubt we'll see a let down.

All of this adds up to a highly unlikely UCLA win IMO.

26 weeks 19 hours ago Stnaford losing seems pretty

Stanford losing seems pretty unlikely to me because that game is meaningless to UCLA.

Think about it. If UCLA plays their best and wins that game, their reward is heading to Autzen stadium to face what many people still beleive is the best (or 2nd best) team in the country.

Instead, they could simply rest their starters, get some good film on Stanford (who is in a must-win situation), and get ready to take on the Cardinal again the following week for the Roses.

I hate the situation there, but with the Conference Champ Games, it only makes sense for UCLA to give less than 100% against Stanford next week.

26 weeks 1 day ago Oregon is going to drop.

Oregon is going to drop. Probably to around 5 behind ND, Bama, Georgia, and Florida.

You just cannot lost to a team like Stanford at home and expect to get the benefit of the doubt from the voters. Especially when you're going against SEC teams.

And I know Stanford is a good team. But ND beat them, and they are considered an unathletic team and started a freshman QB in his first road start.

26 weeks 2 days ago Sounds good. I didn't think

Sounds good. I didn't think of you ND fellas for one second after we won the Sugar Bowl last season.

And good luck getting this fortunate again next year.

26 weeks 3 days ago You're just upset because you

You're just upset because you WILL be left out of the NC unless Oregon or KState loses.

It is a FACT and you're already bitter. So you come on here and talk trash to a team that has owned and embarrassed you several times this decade. Nice.

26 weeks 6 days ago I don't know man. It's not

I don't know man. It's not like Gardner lit up the NW defense for 45 points.

If and when Denard is healthy enough to play, the coaches will make that call. From what I have seen from Hoke, there is no controversy in his mind, which is all that really matters right? Denard is the starter and has earned that right IMO. Is it great having a solid backup who can step in if need be? Absolutely. But I still think Denard gives us our best chance in these last 2/3/4(?) games.

26 weeks 6 days ago No worries. It was mentioned

No worries. It was mentioned on a front page post about an email Brian received from a baseball player with the same injury. He had surgery and was 100% after recovery. Not saying that Denard's injury is exactly the same though. You could be right that they are hoping it recovers on its own.

26 weeks 6 days ago If he really was done for the

If he really was done for the season, wouldn't they opt for surgery ASAP in hopes that he might recover in time for the bowl and/or the combine?

That would be the best option for Denard if they really thought he had no chance of playing again. Which is why I think we will see him play at least one more.

27 weeks 13 hours ago There is no chance of an all

There is no chance of an all SEC title game unless all three unbeatens lose.

Sure that could happen but I'm guessing it would require an injury to both Klein and Mariota. I don't see both those teams losing otherwise.

27 weeks 14 hours ago No but I watched Purdue and

No but I watched Purdue and Pitt play this year. Both are horrible teams that almost won in SB.

27 weeks 22 hours ago Yup. Who is Alabama ranked

Yup. Who is Alabama ranked ahead of that you think is a better team? Or has a better resume?

I still would take Bama over anyone in the MNC.

27 weeks 1 day ago When Chip Kelly heads to the

When Chip Kelly heads to the NFL and the sanctions come down, Oregon will go back to being a so-so power conference team.

If Oregon is still among the nation's elite in 10 years I'll be very surprised. There is a reason they are below .500 over their 100 years of football.

27 weeks 1 day ago Oregon was dominated for most

Oregon was dominated for most of the game and was barely able to tie it up late. I never felt like that game was in doubt.

The following season they did get spanked by LSU.

Alabama would beat Oregon this year too, and it probably wouldn't be close. We probably won't get to see that game unless both ND and KSU lose.

And if Oregon is where college foobtall is headed, that is a bummer. Did you watch USC-Oregon last week? Is that the kind of games you want Michigan and every other team playing? No defese, just see he can score on all of their possessions, instead of just 80% of them??? I really hope that doesn't happen.

Under no circumstances am I rooting for ND to win out. No, no, no, no, no...

The way I see it, the only team who could beat Oregon this season just lost. Oregon will most likely win it all. But I don't even want to see ND in the MNC at all.

If anyone can pull off a miracle in a one-off game, it is the domers this season. And that is my worse case scenario for this football season, considering Ohio isn't elligible.

27 weeks 1 day ago I hope this is true.  But two

I hope this is true.

But two of the other undefeateds (Oregon, ND, KSU) could definitely lose. And you know Bama will get in with 1 loss if that happens.

I think ND will lose to USC. Oregon and KSU look like they will win out. But if they don't we will likely see an SEC team in the NCG again.

28 weeks 10 hours ago I seem to remember some

I seem to remember some called runs with Gardner. One was a QB sweep that picked up a first down.

But let's be honest, Borges wants to run a more traditional system. In addition, he was probably a little concerned about Gardner getting injured.

I think everyone needs to stop their hand wringing over the offense and see how this season and next season play out. Borges seems pretty set in the way he des things and I don't see it changing. Lets just hope his plan for the offense and the players he end up with make for a good combo in coming years.

28 weeks 16 hours ago LSU's fake FG is a close

LSU's fake FG is a close second on the pathetic scale. I think it was 3rd and 12. Against Alabama? Nice call hatter.

28 weeks 17 hours ago The worst thing about sports

The worst thing about sports fans is the way so many of them over react to a single event.

You are calling Gardner a better QB than Denard based on one game against Minnesota? Take a deep breath my man.

28 weeks 20 hours ago Another huge missed call was

Another huge missed call was the punch thrown by an ND player right before the Pitt field goal that would have ended it. It was way after the play and two players were jawing at each other. Then the ND guy just punches the Pitt guy in the face. It was right in the center of the screen and right in front of two refs.

That SHOULD have been a 15 yarder and essentially ended the game, making the FG a glorified extra point. It was the kind of thing that players often get ejected for or even retroactively suspended. And to make it even better, the ND player who threw the punch got a sack in the following OT. Awesome.

28 weeks 1 day ago I'm not really sure I want

I'm not really sure I want Bama to lose. If they do, and ND goes undefeated, we will 100% see the Irish in the MNC. Which would make me sick. Even if they do get blown up by whoever they face.

28 weeks 1 day ago Anyone else see the ND

Anyone else see the ND defensive lineman punch the Pitt player right in the head on 3rd down before the missed field goal? Three refs were right there and didn't make the call.

Probably had something to do with the fact that it would have given Pitt a first down on the 10 yard line and essentially ended ND's undefeated season.

No one is winning @ND this season. Only Alabama and Oregon could overcome the refs there.

28 weeks 6 days ago I think it is a combination

I think it is a combination of a conservative gameplan and average execution. The coaches seem to know that we can beat most teams by playing good defense and not turning the ball over. Combine the plan with a letdown after an emotional win and our senior QB getting injured and you get a 14 point loss to a solid team at their house.

Overall, I think people are way overreacting to this game. If Denard can stay in games, we will have a shot at the Big Ten. If he misses significant time, we will probably lose a couple more. Is the gameplan great? No but it will win us games if the team executes and Denard can play. Just take a deep breath and ride this out.

Exactly this.

I'm sure Purdue also came into the game with this same plan considering what we did against them last year and Denard's performance against ND. It didn't help, even with a "solid" defensive line.

Illinois will certainly stack up against the run, as will MSU, Nebraska, etc. The difference is that Illinois simply does not have the personnel to stop us. We'll see about those other teams.

I expect to see a similar result to last week, with our RBs taking some of the prodcution away from Denard. Against this team, everyone should have holes to run through.

1 year 8 weeks ago I have been thinking about

I have been thinking about this for a while, but if we could ever get to a place in recruiting where we had 100% accurate data on who had what offers, it would be possible to put together some kind of ranking system that is based solely on the quality of offers.

Coaches are the best possible evaluators of talent, and that makes offers a better inidication of talent than the opinion of some guru for scout, rivals, etc.

You would have to find a way to quantify the "quality" of each offer. But it is something that I am sure someone on here *cough* Mathlete *cough* could probably pull off in a weekend.

Just an idea I had.

1 year 8 weeks ago Brian you could not have been

Brian you could not have been any more spot on with the Michigan Hockey fans comment. And the thing is, I didn't even realize it until you brought it up.

From the Billy Sauer meltdown to the NoDak beatdowns to the Air Force goalie going ham to sitting 3rd row in Xcel last year and watching Louie and Carl with a 2-on-1 in the waning minutes of the game only to lose in OT in the national championship...ugh.

Nothing has hurt me like hockey does.

And so when the dust settled after the basketball game on Friday, I simply threw my hands in the air and accepted the fact that in sinlge elimination tournaments sometimes shit happens. Sure it sucks, but like you said it does nothing to diminish the regular season and what these guys did.

I would under no circumstances trade our Big Ten title for wins over Ohio and USF. Maybe not even over beating UNC, although I doubt that ever could have happened. Making a tourney run is great and at the end of the day it is what college basketball is all about.

But for this team and these seniors, a conference title has to mean so much. And our time to run the show in the tournament is still to come.

With our team, I have a feeling that its a really good thing that people are picking Michigan to go down on Friday.

Our performance against OSU (and to a lesser extent Minny) was terrible. And I think people are reading into that a lot when they are saying we are going to be upset.

You can be sure that our team is hearing it all, and I think we will respond with a fury. Novak and Stu are not ready to go out, and Burke will want to show that the OSU game was a fluke. Hardaway will be fired up as well.

And let's not forget that Beilein has a week to get this team ready, and he has a great record of doing so. Our performance against OSU at home this year cam after a week off and that went pretty well.

Now I know the BTT was after a week off as well, but we didn't know we would play Minny for sure until the day before.

Long story short, I am confident that the team will deliver a good performance on Friday. Sunday will be tougher but there is not reason we can't beat Temple as well.

UNC woul require a miracle, but I'll worry about that when we get there!

- Minnesota, BU, Cornell, and AFA win their tournaments.

Bottom line is, if we can win one game at the Joe, I think we're in great shape!

1 year 10 weeks ago I could be wrong on this, but

I could be wrong on this, but I think that a big part of the reason that Brian relies on advanced metrics for basketball is that he does not know as much about the intricacies of the game as he does when it comes to football.

That's not meant as an insult in any way. I know very little about the inner workings of basketball, especially when compared to football.

Perhaps Brian defers to these statisitics for bball because they are the best way he knows how to predict what will happen, and instead of making basless predictions to appease the masses (like ESPN talking heads do all the time), he defers his expertise to KenPom.

I mean, sure it would make us all feel better if Brian said that he had a gut feeling we are going to the Elite 8. But that wouldn't make it happen. And it would take away from some of the professionalism that he displays on a daily basis. There are plenty of homers* around these parts already.

We live and Eugene and occasionally watch games at the Thirsty Lion when we are in Portland.

The bar itself is pretty nice and in the style of an English Pub. The beer selection is decent but not spectacular, at least by NW standards. Still has a good microbrew selection though, because you don't stay in business here otherwise. The bar is right in downtown Portland, allowing you to walk to the Brewery Blocks after the game if you are interested. I recommend Deschutes and Rogue. They are both doing some very excellent things with their beers this time of year and sell stuff at the bar that you can't buy in stores.

For big games (tomorrow obviously) it will get pretty packed which makes for a good atmosphere. It is a mixed crowd with equal parts old and young alums. The alumni association in Portland emphasizes that the Thirsty Lion is a family-friendly bar, so screaming profanity may not be a very good idea if that is your thing. Although that is true of a lot of bars.

Overall, I give the Thirsty Lion an A-/B+ grade and would recommend it to any Michigan fans who want to watch the game with fellow Wolverines.

Seems to cute to me and is asking Denard to quickly turn back to his left and throw a touch pass in traffic. I know Denard needs to make a better decision there, but the coaches are not putting him in a good position on that play IMO.

Other than that I have liked our gameplan so far.

1 year 26 weeks ago While its true that Hoke's

While its true that Hoke's injury info is rearely reliable, I doubt he would say Denard is fine if that is not the truth.

First off, I understand why he may underplay the seriousness of the injury SLIGHTLY. Afterall, he doesn't want Nebraska to know if Denard's wrist is one hit away from knocking him out of the game.

At the same time, however, I don't think he'd say everything is fine if Denard has a broken wrist and no chance of playing. To me, that could lead to all kinds of questions after the game about Denard's toughness and willingness to play through pain. It could also raise questions about a possible QB controversy.

I really doubt Hoke would take that chance, seeing how he has defended Denard at every turn this season.

So in summary, I think that Hoke is being truthful when he says that the injury is relatively minor and that Denard will play. Is it sore? No doubt. Is Denard 100%? Nope. But he will play, and he will probably be his usual self (for better or worse).

Then, to not only make the playoffs but to knock off the Phillies and Brewers on our way to another pennant? Wow!

Losing will always stiing, but the way the Cardinals finished this season has made me as proud as ever to root for that organization.

With that being said, let's get a 9th inning comeback and then win it in 7!!!

Go Cards!

And of course, Go Blue!

1 year 30 weeks ago With all the crap that has

With all the crap that has been flying around here since Saturday, I have no problem with Brian or any of the mods locking down any thread.

Let's just drop it and move on eh?

1 year 30 weeks ago MSU is having their best run

MSU is having their best run in probably 50 years and we are having our worst run in close to 100.

That's not to take anything away from them, but it is a simple fact.

What separates us from them is the ability to maintain a high level of success over the long term. I have no doubt that will continue to be the case moving forward.

We just have to stay the course.

So in short I disagree with basically everything the OP said.

1 year 31 weeks ago Ya the second 4th and 1 call

Ya the second 4th and 1 call was a killer.

You have to let Denard keep it in that situation and get the first down. I mean maybe they stop Denard anyway. But I'd much rather go down trying to do what we do best.

The problem with the PA on that play is that the entire defense is already keying on Denard. They know he is getting the ball. So to have him turn his back to the defense is just not smart.

I just have no idea why we felt like we had to go for it all right there. It may have cost us the game.

But with that being said, I think Borges has made a lot of calls this season that have worked out for us really well. Sometimes you make a bad one. I'm sure he realizes it as well and feel horrible.

We just have to move on from this one. I don't think we'll play a better defense all season, and we definitely won't play a more motivated one that this Sparty team.

Get healthy the next two weeks. Beat Purdue. And then go into Iowa City and show us all that this is not 2009 or 2010.

That will be the next big test IMO. If we lose to Iowa, the bad feelings from the past three years will be back.

1 year 31 weeks ago Ya I live in Eugene

Ya I live in Eugene currently, and if you know where Autzen is located, it is not surprising that no one is there right now.

Its about a 20 minute walk from campus to where Autzen stadium is.

Also keep in mind that it will likely still be dark here in Oregon when gameday kicks off tomorrow @ 6am local time. Throw in the fact that kickoff isn't until 7pm PT and it will probably be dead tomorrow morning as well.

But trust me, they are rabid out here when it comes to the ducks. It annoys the hell out of me sometimes. I can't ever go out of the house in Michigan gear without getting comments from somebody, usually bringing up the 2007 game. Doesn't stop me from sporting my Wolverine pride though.

Anyways, I appreciate your dedication to your superstition.

Keep up the good work.

1 year 31 weeks ago (No subject)

1 year 31 weeks ago I am hoping that this is one

I am hoping that this is one of those games that is supposed to be close, but we end up just blowing the doors off of MSU while announcing our return to (almost) being Michigan once again.

That is just my hope, and there is not rational basis for that prediction other than the fact that we beat an ND team that blew MSU up. Sure we had some help from ND in our win. BUT Sparty actually won the TO battle with ND as well, and they still lost.

What's more likely to happen is that this game will be defined by mistakes. If Denard makes the right decisions and limits out TOs to 1 or 2, I think we win a close one. If Denard serves up the picks again (especially in the redzone) we will lose.

Now I know MSU will have a say in this game as well. But I am just looking at this from a MIchigan perspective, as I know little about this Sparty team and what they are capable of.

I can't say that either team jumps out to me as the "better" team, even though Sparty fans think it is a no-brainer. It will come down to mistakes, desire, and passion. It is afterall a rivalry game.

1 year 31 weeks ago Oooh a rare Brian board

Oooh a rare Brian board posting!

Me like!

Especially because it means Dunn is coming! Or at least in Kalis's opinion he is.

1 year 31 weeks ago Ya there is almost too much

Ya there is almost too much good sports on TV right now.

Michigan Football obviously.

Plus, and I know I won't be liked for this, I'm a life long Cards fan (raised in StL) and they are doing well.

Michigan Hockey just started up so that's another thing on the list.

And by the time it all slows down, Mich Bball will be underway.

Speaking of bball and football, have any of you looked at the calendar for the week of Thanksgiving this year?

Football vs. Nebraska Saturday, MBB @ the Maui Invitational all week, and then The Game on the following Saturday. Oh ya and just to top it all off, Michigan Hockey is playing both weekends with OSU before Thanksgiving and some non-conference games the weekend after.

Wow that is going to be a gooooood week!

1 year 31 weeks ago Here is what MSU did against

Here is what MSU did against OSU's defense:

10 Points

321 Total Yards

71 Rushing Yards @ 2.3 ypc

Cousins went 20/32 for 250 with 1 TD and 2 Ints

Here is what Nebraska did against OSU's defense:

34 Points

423 Total Yards

232 Rushing Yards @ 4.5 ypc

Plus a 16/22 for 191 with 2 TDs and 1 Int perfromance from Taylor Martinez

So you can qualify MSU's numbers against OSU any way you want, but to me they do not indicate that the Oline "played pretty well." The rushing number were not good at all, and Martinez almost had a better day throwing against OSU than Cousins did (depsite only one sack against him).

I think people look at Michigan's sack numbers and don't think they get good pressure on the QB. In reality, we have made almost every QB we have played get happy feet in the second half. If we can do the same against Cousins we will be ok.

The biggest matchup IMO is Michigan O vs Sparty D. If Michigan scores 28+ I think we win the game. If we struggle to break 20 we lose. If we're in the mid-20s it could go either way. Not super inciteful I know, but its only Monday!

1 year 31 weeks ago I graduated in 2009. So I

I graduated in 2009.

So I saw some good things (2006 football, one hockey frozen four, Lloyd's swan song over Florida, etc).

I also saw some bad things (basketball all but one season, 2005 football, the horror, 2008 football, etc).

But just because I am not in school any more does not make me connect with Michigan athletics any less.

Since I've graduated I seen AND attended the Big Chill, Hockey NC Game, UTL, along with a couple other football games that were less than notable (ie blowout losses).

I've also had the pleasure of watching basketball begin to turn the corner and football trying to do the same thing.

My point being that I wouldn't dwell on what four years you were at Michigan. It wouldn't have mattered what the state of athletics was during my year, they still would be the best of my life.

But even three years removed, I still live and die with all the Michigan teams. The wins still taste as sweet and the losses just as bitter.

That's whats great about going to Michigan. You're a wolverine for life. Period.

1 year 31 weeks ago There are really no good

There are really no good choices for gameday this week IMO.

Mich-MSU is big but regional. Plus they already went to a Michigan game.

Oregon-ASU also regional. Plus they did an Oregon game. I will be surprised if Oregon doesn't roll.

I think Texas-OK State or Florida-Auburn would have been decent choices if 3 of those teams hadn't lost last week.

And that's about it.

So all things considered, Oregon makes the most sense. Especially since that is a night game, allowing Herbstriet to avoid a plane ride after gameday.

1 year 31 weeks ago IMO, all the bad calls

IMO, all the bad calls basically resulted in a wash.

We definitely had some things go our way, and those will be highlighted since we won the game.

But there was some blatantly obvious holding calls against them that went uncalled. Whereas Michigan seemed to get tagged every time we made that kind of mistake.

Bottom line is that we won by 18. Sure NW may have come down to score on their second to last drive and made it a 4 or 3 point game. But we got them to 4th down for a reason. We were playing pretty solid defense in the second half.

If this had been a one possession game I could beleive that the refs played a bigger role in the outcome. But as it stands, the only thing the refs could have affected was the margin of victory IMO.

1 year 32 weeks ago Not trying to be negative

Not trying to be negative here, but the only game that I feel REALLY good about is Purdue.

That leaves MSU, Illinois, Iowa, Neb, and OSU which are all toss-ups IMO.

I think we will win 2 or 3 of those games.

So I predict either 9-3 or 10-2 I guess, but even that sounds unreal to me. I guess its all the darkness over the past 3 seasons that has me so leary.

I'll make my final prediction 8-4. That way I am very likely to be pleasantly surprised!

1 year 32 weeks ago Ya I was going to say that

Ya I was going to say that Iowa or Illinois could end up night games, but those are in November as well.

So if that rule really does exist, than no more night games.

And even if the rule didn't exist, there is no way Brandon would spring another night game at home this season. One per year at home will be the max. And I'm happy with that.

1 year 32 weeks ago ya that is the first boob

1 year 32 weeks ago Exactly... Do you think

Exactly...

Do you think anyone outside of Ann Arbor remembers or cares that we lost to OSU in 2007 because Henne and Hart were banged up?

Nope.

At the end of the day the result is all that matters.

I would never wish injury on anyone, but if the situation as it stands gives Michigan a better chance of winning I will take it.

I promise you no team has or will ever feel sorry for us if we have injury problems. That's just the nature of competitive sports.

What about Trumpy?

I heard knee sprain right?

Seems like it will be tough for him to go 100% as well, although I wish him and Persa the best of health.

I will still be less nervous without them on the field though.

1 year 35 weeks ago I would love to see someone

I would love to see someone put the videos of the two catches on top of each other somehow. I know little about video editing so I'm not sure if that's possible, but I'd love to see it.

I know the catches themselves were not that similar, but the circumstances definitely were.

4th and 1 - Michigan goes for it all when they could have played it safe.

:08 seconds left - Michigan goes for it all when they could have played it safe (if you consider a FG safe, which I don't, but whatever)

1 year 36 weeks ago This should put an end to the

This should put an end to the "football is for MEN, stop being p**ssies" comments I have been hearing from some people, particularly ND fans.

I understand that yelling is part of the game. I played high school football and was yelled at plenty. But there is a certain way and a certain setting in which it needs to be done.

Kelly crossed a line IMO, and apparently some recruits and their parents feel the same way.

Sure, sure Bo yelled at his players too. But that was in the age before every single thing a coach did was caught on camera and scrutinized. Perhaps if Bo coached in this day in age he would have realized that it is inappropriate to attack a player like that on national television. We'll never know for sure but Bo =/= Kelly IMO.

1 year 36 weeks ago People die almost every year

People die almost every year from knocking over vending machines on themselves. Seriously, that shit happens. You push the machine and it rocks back and then falls forward crushing you. Check it out:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vending_machine#Risk_of_falling_machines

http://www.funfacts.com.au/vending-machine-death/

I know that its a rare occurance but you'd think that after what happened with the scissor lift, they would have avoided Kelly telling a girl to slam against the machine.

Not to mention this video isn't funny and just plain sucks overall.

1 year 36 weeks ago I think that the (1) weather

I think that the (1) weather combined with the fact that it was the (2) first game, (3) against a MAC opponent, (4) prior to a rivalry game, and (5) was a game we were never in a position to lose...

all mean that almost nothing can be taken from this game in terms of how the offense and defense will continue to perform throughout the rest of the season.

This could just be wishful thinking of course, but seeing as we don't really need to practice the zone running game, maybe we simply left it out for Western. Maybe the coaches wanted to see how we could run power against an opponent we should physically dominate.

Denard's numbers do concern me a little, but as long as he can avoid the turnovers this year I think he will be fine. I just don't think he's going to put up 500 yards of total offense all by himself.

But at the end of the day, wins matter most. I already saw Denard do a couple things last Saturday that I rarely saw last season. (1) He seems to make much better progressions in the passing game, moving from #1 to #2 pretty smoothly. (2) I saw Denard demonstrate a better awareness of when to take off on a called pass.

Of course the play where he almost threw the pick was scary. And the drive where he went deep to Koger despite having a wideopen check-down past the sticks is also a concern.

But overall, I think Denard will continue to get better making decisions, and he will still have the ability to make big plays whe called upon.

We shall see...

I agree with you.

I think the University thinks that by keeping the lots closed until 12 they will reduce alcohol consumption and all the problems that come with it.

However, people will still be drinking before noon. And the cluster caused by keeping the lots closed is going to be catastrophic.

I will be getting down to campus well before 12 come hell or high water.

Cjpops,

I think that the implication is that In the best case scenario we would be able to dominate games by handing off to the rbS over and over.

Also, we would ideally be in the lead and would want to run the ball to control clock. Also under center Handoffs allow us to keep denard Out of harms way.

I think Borges will unleash denard When necessary. But would rather not have to in an ideal world.

1 year 36 weeks ago People on this board seem to

People on this board seem to have a lot of love for Irish.

And in general, he is pretty tolerable.

However, the weeks leading up to this season, he was a typical ND blowhard, spouting off like he KNEW they were BCS bound.

That's where he started to piss me off.

Of course, after the USF loss, he was on here acting much more humble. I do have to give him props for even showing up though. And his diary breaking down the ND depth chart was very informative.

Overall, he definitely makes some positive contributions to this board. But he needs to watch his tongue sometimes if he wants to continue getting all the positive favor he currently has on this blog.

1 year 36 weeks ago Hmmm, it's hard to beleive

Hmmm, it's hard to beleive that ND "ran wild" on us last year when they only scored 24 points.

Plus 7 of those came at the end of the game on the Rudolph pass.

So again, I don't think Crist an ND ran wild on us, unless you count one or two decent drives as running wild.

Now what Denard did? That was running wild!

1 year 36 weeks ago Didn't Wile kick in the

Didn't Wile kick in the Western game?

Pretty sure he wasn't there last season.

Still if its hard to fix than its hard to fix.

We will see I guess.

1 year 36 weeks ago Denard is the QB. And the

Denard is the QB. And the most talented player on our offense. And the coaches most certainly saw what he did against ND last season (despite what they might say).

So I think Hoke and Borges will be able to lean on him planty if the game dictates that they do so.

I'm not saying that Denard will single-handedly beat ND again. But I think he could, and he will be given the opportunity if we are struggling.

1 year 36 weeks ago I think the line moving is

I think the line moving is based on tons of people betting ND despite last week because of all the "mitigating factors" of their loss.

Every single ND fan's post I have seen since their game seems to be chalking the loss up to a fluke that says absolutely nothing about the quality of their team.

I won't argue that the cumulation of events that occured in the USF game is unlikely to happen again.

However, that doesn't mean that some of NDs mistakes were not on them.

The bottom line is that the QB who earned the starting job for them over the summer is now on the bench. I know Rees wasn't far behind, but Crist obvisouly looked better in the off-season.

And as we have all seen over the past 3+ years, things like muffed punts, fumbles, and dropped passes don't just disappear overnight.

They also missed a FG, and although their kicker is normally very good, we know that kicking is a mental game. He has to have just a little less confidence in himself now, and that could be just enough to produce another miss in a hostile environment.

1 year 36 weeks ago I'm 100% with you on this

I'm 100% with you on this game.

Not only did the game/gameday weather suck.

But, my friends and I decided to tent camp near South Bend the night before the game because there were no hotels available and it seemed like a good, cheap way to spend a friday night in the fall.

It must have rained 5 inches that night, and all of our tents ended up with water in them.

I probably slept 2 hours that night, and then spent the entire next day getting more wet and reamed by fumbles and ND.

Awesome...

My fiance's dad, a Duck fan, was in Ann Arbor visiting for that game.

Needless to say, we stayed for the entire game with him.

At least one person in our group was happy.

Luckily, he's a great guy overall and wholeheartedly roots for Michigan any time they are not playing Oregon.

But that game was certainly hard to watch one week after the Horror occurred.

1 year 36 weeks ago If road games count, then

If road games count, then 2008 @ND has to be up there.

Not only did we get curb stomped thanks to all kinds of yakety-sax, but the weather was horrible with multiple torrential downpours throughout the game.

That was my senior year, and I combined the ND game with the NW game plus a trip to Columbus all to see 3 wins.

That should be a Fandom Endurance Season Badge!

1 year 36 weeks ago IMO, I don't really care what

IMO, I don't really care what Bo, Lloyd, or God Himself did with their special teams.

I just know that I think it would really hurt our team to lose Troy on the defensive side of the ball. If anything he's got a ton of experience and plays with a ton of emotion.

That being said, I don't want to increase the injury risk of a guy with a plate and 8 screws in his ankle. I know he hurt the other ankle but still...

He already plays defense people, the injury risk is high enough there.

But just in the past 3 or so hours I have seen posts on:

These are fine, I guess, but it seems that they could have been consolidated in some way. I would much rather see talk about the game itself, the players, coaches, etc rather than all this other noise.

1 year 36 weeks ago Plus there are only two games

Plus there are only two games between ranked opponents that I see next week.

Both are in the SEC, and neither are very sexy matchups.

I know neither Michigan or ND will be ranked, but I think they'd have to have a really good reason to ditch Ann Arbor.

1 year 36 weeks ago Yes, I also have a badge from

Yes, I also have a badge from that game.

But I think that the numbering may be all off.

The '08 ND game was before the NW game, so if we count that one does it change the number?

What were FE 1 and FE 2?

We need to establish set guidelines here.

1 year 36 weeks ago I would like to talk about

I would like to talk about the Fandom Endurance Games, as mentioned in your signature.

Can someone give a rundown of those games.

I don't think this has ever been considered one, but if you are going to count road games, @ND in 2008 has got to be one.

We basically had the same weather as they had yesterday, minus the lightning and delays. My phone got so wet in my pocket that is never turned on again. All while Michigan was fumbling kickoff after kickoff on our way to a rout.

So what are all the FE Games?

Which is #1,2,3 4, etc?

1 year 36 weeks ago Its a difficult and fine line

Its a difficult and fine line that we have to walk here.

Absopure provides the water stations in the stadium, and they have their signs up dont they?

MDen has stores in the Big House dont they? (Dont get me wrong, I love MDen and I realize that it is not even close to the same as StubHub, etc.)

Arent there dominoes and hungry howie's signs in the concourse as well?

My point here is, that although I see these things as very very separate, Dave Brandon probably doesn't make that distinction. He probably thinks that as long as its outside the bowl its ok.

I disagree with him, but as long as it doesn't continue to get worse, I'll survive.

1 year 36 weeks ago I think the UTL game will

I think the UTL game will come down to the same things that almost all games do.

If we win the TO battle, don't give up big plays, avoid penalties, etc we win the game. If we can't do those things ND takes it.

USF almost blew the game yesterday by jumping offsides on a FG attempt and giving ND a new life in the redzone. I think Rees followed with a pick, but still.

Fortuantely for us, ND has already shown to be undisciplined and mistake prone. If we are lucky they will play tight, leading to more mistakes.

However, its also possible that they come out focused and determined and play extremely well.

I can tell you one thing. It is going to be LOUD and CRAZY in the Big House next Saturday. And that obviously favors us in every conceivable way.

1 year 36 weeks ago Floyd definitely could go

Floyd definitely could go nuts against us.

But you have to remember that we have beaten him the past two seasons, and in 2009 they had Tate. Both those guys tore us up, and we still won the game.

I think the key against Floyd, and ND in general, is to avoid the big play.

If we are giving up 50+ yard TDs similar to what the New Math did to ND in 2006(?), I think we are in trouble.

But when you keep Floyds catches contained to less than 20 yards, it forces ND to march down the field and get other players involved.

And if the last 2.1 years are any indication, they don't have the horses to deliver a victory with the rest of their offensive weapons.

1 year 36 weeks ago Definitely. 9/13 with at

Definitely.

9/13 with at least two of those passes coming in the downpour.

I know he has to be able to throw in weather conditions and all, but yesterday had to be tough out there. And MOST games will feature crisp, cool, and dry fall days in Michigan.

I like what I saw overall. ND will be a test, because I think gound yards may be tough to get. So Denard will definitely have to put it up some.

1 year 36 weeks ago Well, on the Carder draw that

Well, on the Carder draw that picked up a first down he was definitely doubled and helf his ground decently.

I think, but could be wrong, that JB Fitzgerald made the big mistake there. He turned and ran with a receiver instead of diagnosing the draw. If he had stepped into the hole, Carder would have been dead to rights.

Then again, Carder could have pulled up and thrown. Not sure if that's an option for him on that play.

1 year 36 weeks ago i agree that Western's

i agree that Western's running game gashed us on a couple occasions.

But looking at the box score, I believe they only averaged 3.8 ypc. Which isn't bad.

I think that climbs up to around 4.5 or so without the sacks. Which against WMU is a little troubling.

it will be interesting to see what the UFR shows though, because on some of their big(er) runs, we were definitely in nickel or dime and had almost no one in the middle of the defense behind the line.

I'm sure ND will be in lots of 3 and 4 WR sets too though, so we'd better figure it out.

Maybe we will just big a blitz heavy team this year?

1 year 37 weeks ago In Hoke's post-game presser,

In Hoke's post-game presser, I think someone asked him about Barnum (although I couldn't hear the question.

Hoke responded by saying we didn't dress him, and nothing further.

Not sure that means anything, but its interesting with all the misinformation out there on a relativley minor situation.

1 year 37 weeks ago But did Bo direct his tirades

But did Bo direct his tirades at the players? Or the refs?

All the highlights I have seen of Bo show him screaming at officials.

But Kelly cusses out players and assistant coaches like crazy.

I almost feel bad for Crist, that guy looks like an abused puppy. Scared to make a mistake.

Now, I didn't grow up in the Bo era so I could be wrong in my assessment. If so please straighten me out.

No, the guy was atomic red. Like the surface of Mars or something.

At one point I could see he scalp where he is balding, and that was beat red.

Watching those rants make me LOL while also feeling uncomfortable. Its kinda weird.

1 year 37 weeks ago Sorry, but I hope we don't

Sorry, but I hope we don't see him on KO coverage any more after that near miss.

1 year 37 weeks ago It could be their best

It could be their best offense and defense since 1994...and they'd still only win around 8 games this year.

1 year 37 weeks ago I still think our offense

I still think our offense could have trouble slowing down the ND offense. Especially if we can't get to the QB.

But, USF was in prevent defense for what seemed like an eitre quarter. Giving up 15-20 yard passes with very little effort.

Could have skewed things a little bit.
