C'mon, once our photographer saw him, he got as many shots with him as he could. Ernie was fantastic... and patient, as things got underway a bit later than originally scheduled, and the Tigers had a game that night. (View picture to see the full-size images... sorry about the flash, these are physical pictures and I don't have my scanner handy.)
|1 week 3 days ago||Wedding Invites||
Good call on sending the invite. the worst-case scenario is no response or a polite decline. The best-case scenario for me was that I randomly invited Ernie Harwell to do a reading (Song of Solomon 2:11-12, of course) at my wedding, and he accepted. Everybody was amazed when he walked out.
|2 years 48 weeks ago||True...||
...though there were complaints leading up to the game that the efforts to thaw the field weren't completely successful. I imagine that if Michigan had any hope of hosting a game in late December or early January, they would cover the field immediately after the final home game to alleviate the snow removal/thawing issues that Minnesota faced.
|2 years 48 weeks ago||Playing devil's advocate...||
When the Metrodome roof caved in, one of the options explored was playing at Minnesota's TCF Stadium. It was abandoned, at least in part, because the field did not have any heating built in, and thus would be like playing on pavement. Anybody out there know whether Michigan Stadium's field is heated? I'm guessing not.

Highly, highly recommend The Green Goddess (http://www.greengoddessnola.com/ or @greengoddessFQ on Twitter). Supremely inventive eats and drinks, tucked into an off-the-beaten-path alley.
The Googles will reveal to you a special code phrase provided to Neil Gaiman for his followers as well. When I visited, it turned out to be a free appetizer.

It's a ghillie suit.
And no, I don't have any idea why you'd wear one to the game (other than getting your mug on TV/scoreboard, obvs).

"The volume level of piped-in music is too high."
I had to vote "Neutral" on this, because I both agree and disagree. When the stadium is loud, the volume level is fine. In pre-game, when the stadium is quieter, the volume is way too high.

I have two ND singles that I'm looking to trade for a pair. Do you have a pair that you're planning on selling one? Avoid the uncomfortable feeling of having to sit next to the dude you took to the cleaners and probably upgrade your own seat in the process. My seats:
Section 22, Row 23: THIS IS YOUR SEAT. It rules.
Section 18, Row 65: You'll still rake in mad loot, but now you don't have to see the guy.
Contact info is in the ticket spreadsheet. Depending on the seats you have, I'm willing to kick in some $$ to make it happen.

8. When the flag is displayed in a manner other than by being flown from a staff, it should be displayed flat, whether indoors or out. When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be uppermost and to the flag's own right, that is, to the observer's left. When displayed in a window it should be displayed in the same way, that is with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street. When festoons, rosettes or drapings are desired, bunting of blue, white and red should be used, but never the flag.

|4 years 41 weeks ago||Geosci||
I was in the Geosci program back in the early 90s, and there are definitely some plusses and minuses if you're considering it as a second major. The biggest thing to understand is that there are two distinct degree tracks. The one I ended up with, an "Earth Sciences" degree, differs from the main "Geological Sciences" degree primarily in one requirement -- the Field Camp in Jackson Hole, WY. If you can't commit to spending a summer at Camp Davis, you can't get a GeoSci degree. On the GeoSci concentration page, this is listed as the "Field Experience Requirement."
That said, David's comment above is 100% true. The field trips the Geology department takes are legendary, and among the most fun experiences I had on campus.
Good luck to you!

Freshman quarterbacks Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson are both expected to play Saturday against Penn State, reports Ron Musselman of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. (http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09295/1007422-143.stm)
The game marks the first time the Wolverines have faced a formidable opponents since Coach Rich Rodriguez's quarterback shuffle failed in the closing moments of Michigan's loss to Iowa. Forcier has said all the right things since, but all you need to do is cue up the footage from the Iowa game's closing moments, when Rodriguez had to hold Forcier back from running onto the field, to know who he thinks should be getting the ball in the crunch time moments. If Forcier struggles early and Rodriguez turns more to Robinson, watch out.
Think this is interesting? Just wait.
"I think playing both QBs has been a very good thing for Michigan this year and I feel like he'll keep mixing them up because it keeps defenses off balance. Both guys bring something different and it also has minimized the pressure on them. Ultimately I think Forcier is the guy because he's so good at throwing on the run. Then again, next year the real chaos begins when uber QB prospect Devin Gardner arrives. He's big, fast and smart. Rodriguez may play all three on the field at the same time."

|5 years 27 weeks ago||*sigh*||
I SO wish I could be there tonight. Ah, the perils of stepping down to one car in the family.
The following is 100% true (no sugarcoat)...
My wife and I got a list of suggested readings from our pastor when we were planning our wedding, and one of them was Song of Solomon 2. As I'm reading it, my very first reaction was, "Oh, shit. YES, we are including this reading. Nobody but my groomsmen may 'get it,' but it will be SO worth it."
On a total whim, I check the Tigers 2001 schedule. Hey, they're home that weekend, and an evening game the night of the wedding. So, I wrote Ernie a letter, telling him about my life-long love of the Tigers and listening to his broadcasts. (Keep in mind, this letter was written in late 2000. Not good times for a Tigers fan.) I asked if he'd be willing to read the words that Tigers fans recognize as the true harbinger of spring. I sent two copies of the letter, one c/o the Tigers, and one c/o the Freep. And then I forgot about it, because, really, what are the odds?
A couple of weeks later, my phone rings at my desk. "Mr. Williams? This is Ernie Harwell." (I am literally tearing up right now as I'm typing this.) I about fell out of my chair. He told me he had received my letter, and that he'd be more than happy to do the reading, just send him the details. Holy shit. I thanked him profusely, said good-bye, hung up, and stood up shakily, staring at my phone. My co-workers, I believe, thought somebody in my family had died. Oh, quite the opposite.
So we send Ernie an invitation to the wedding, with some additional detail notes, via the Tigers. (It never occurred to me to ask who had given him my letter.) About two weeks before the wedding, our home phone rings in the evening. It's Ernie. He hadn't heard anything from us since our phone conversation, and wanted to make sure everything was okay. Well, besides him obviously not getting the invite, yeah, everything's cool, so I give him the time, date, address and whatnot, and he says he'll be there.
And so he was. Despite the ceremony starting late (probably causing him to be slightly later than usual to the ballpark) he was there, talked with me and my groomsmen before the ceremony, and was just generally... well, he was Ernie. Everything you read about him is 100% true. He is truly one of a kind.
If I think about it later tonight, I'll scan in one of the pictures our photographer took with the two of us outside the church... I think I still have a copy of the audio of his reading at the wedding around here as well.
Yeah, Ernie is one of the good guys, and it absolutely kills me not to be there tonight.

Page was okay. I commented to the people around me after the fifth or sixth "world economic crisis" mention that it was a good thing that nobody circulated a campus-wide email containing a drinking game. "Every time somebody mentions the economy, take a drink..."
The student speaker was good. "I knew so little English that I thought the Fishbowl was an aquarium. (laughter) I thought the Big House was a prison. (laughter) I thought that North Face jackets and Ugg boots were the unofficial school uniform. (laughter) Turns out, I was only right about the third one. (very much laughter)"

Yep, basically everything is edible. The scoreboards and goal posts have florist wire holding them up, that's the only thing of the entire cake that isn't edible. The scoreboards and field are rolled fondant. It's not the tastiest of stuff, but it is absolutely edible.
|5 years 47 weeks ago||Achievement||
Nope, just my BS, in Earth Sciences. I left school after Winter '95 a few credits short, plus needed my ULWR. I finished the credits locally a couple of years back, then just recently finished working with one of the Geology profs on getting the second half of the writing requirement finalized. Nothing like trying to go back after 15 years away from a subject to write a ten-page paper. Ugh. Still, very glad to have it finished, finally.
|5 years 51 weeks ago||DiY||
I did mine myself. Many bike helmets have contours and geometry that actually lend themselves pretty readily to converting to a football helmet-like look. A couple of really poor pictures of mine:
I did the base coat in maize, then taped it off with detailing tape, and over-coated in blue. Once it was dry, a couple of coats of sealer finished the deal. It's not the most professional job, but the price was certainly right.
If you're interested, I could take some pictures of the helmet by itself to give you an idea what I did.

See, I appreciate that the Freep has started consistently labeling articles with their columnists names, at least in the "opinion" columns. I can't tell you how many times I've been saved from having to read Sharp's dreck by seeing "DREW SHARP: I'm a moron, and so am I" (paraphrased) in the link.
