To piggyback on this, most think the DL is better this year than last year and the OL certainly didn't play any worse than last year's scrimmage, faint praise that may be. Can/should this information lead one to conclude the OL is in fact incrementally better than last year?

I would love to see this site move to Drupal 7, as the interface has kind of run its course. Or, it would be really neat to see Brian leverage his stature in the blogging scene to start an open source sports blog project based on Reddit's open source codebase or something. I mention it in part because he once singled that out as a commenting system he likes. I imagine that a lot of coders that wouldn't necessarily donate their money would donate their time to making this the best sports site on the Internet if this site went open source.
On the other hand, this is already a great site, so rocking the boat is a gamble.

Next year I expect explosions and velociraptor attacks in your offseason "worst case scenario" prediction. The worst you could come up with this year with was clearly not pessimistic or imaginative enough.

If there's one empirical counterpoint to the conclusion here, it's the fact that Kentucky chucked a terrible 3 that by all rights they should have missed. Everything that Beilein could have wanted to happen happened, except for the 35 ft contested shot going in.

This is a very, very weak argument. Schools like Michigan (and its fans) that don't like oversigning would love to have unlimited scholarships because it would eliminate the oversigning quandary. Schools like Indiana State (and its fan) that can't afford unlimited scholarships love oversigning because it brings in transfers. It also allows them to take more flyers so they can find diamonds in the rough. One of the biggest oversigners a few years ago was Troy, which was a successful team at the time, by the way.
The person he's arguing against doesn't exist.

I 'm also wondering what would happen if they had called offsetting penalties. I can't remember and can't check this right now, but I thought NW was offsides. I assume one untimed play?
|41 weeks 6 days ago||He wrote a lot, sure, but I||
He wrote a lot, sure, but I don't think he did enough to correlate any of these teams with Michigan. He didn't even say which of those teams we're most like, because if we're like none of them then there's no conclusion to be made. I actually think we're closer to that Ohio State team than he'd like to admit.
Also, I'm confused why it's a foregone conclusion to him that Texas should have been more successful without Kevin Effing Durant. So...Texas should have benched him that year? The Thunder should get rid of him now? Was I supposed to agree with that? Because I didn't.
And he didn't even look at why teams like Utah and Oklahoma were so much worse the next year (here's a clue: they didn't have future NBA players on their roster).
He's usually a good writer, but the Michigan part flat out didn't make sense to me.

His survey of teams that lost the previous year's POY is the definition of turning correlation into causation. I bet that most of those teams won precisely as many games as they were supposed to, as tends to happen (except of course Kentucky).

Interesting question. I'm guessing the other team gets an identical advantage push when they receive the kickoff in the 2nd half. In that case it wouldn't matter. But, this is assuming your odds of scoring on the first possession of the game and the first possession of the second half are the same. Perhaps they're different.

I think I can answer this.
Simply possessing the ball provides an immediate, slight advantage at kickoff.
