I don't know, it's kind of funny how these alleged sports fans measure enjoyment of a game by how long it is and not the outcome.

If the outlay to athletes must be fixed (one scholarship), then that of the ADs, coaches, staff, etc. must too. Set the maximum salary at something like $250,000 for any Div I athletic employee. Or set a tiered pay structure based on what position you hold. But not even a tenth of the $4 million they're paid right now. It would also curb some (but not all) of the job-hopping.

If they want to make more money, they can go to the pros too.

I think one place you need to look is at known "cheaters", and their recruiting prowess before and after the cheating started (e.g. Auburn, USC, and yes, OSU). Then you can build a profile of what a cheater's recruiting class looks like compared to their historical norm. There may not be any telling indicators, but even that would be useful to know.

Looking at wins and losses can be instructive, but the only thing that money could realistically guarantee you is better looking recruiting classes--I would argue that all other data is noise, because good and bad coaches cheat.

In the Big fourTEeN, only OSU, Michigan, and Wisconsin have higher rated cornerbacks in their class. Not bad for a so-called flyer!

I have one optimistic counterargument.

Anyone who played his first or second year was deemed not just as good, but better than the upperclassmen ahead of him. That's an important distinction. It's no surprise that that would be rare, but it doesn't mean 90-99% of RS or true freshmen were unfit to play, or liabilities--they could have been merely less good or as good as the talented upperclassmen on the team. So I think the percents are conservative.

In other words, not starting != not serviceable and not playing at all != liability when the depth chart ahead of a player is loaded with upperclassmen as it has been most of these years. I'm excited to see these players next year and believe that 2-3 of them will be serviceable rather than the 0-1 (approx. 0.62) that these numbers predict.

The Wolverines had a bit of trouble with Pittsburgh, but a huge win over Kansas State seems to indicate that the Beilein machine may be worthy of its no. 4 ranking. The great news for Michigan fans is that Tim Hardaway Jr. seems to have his stroke back, and the forwards have been strong enough that they haven't needed huge contributions from freshman Mitch McGary yet. I'm anxious to see how they look Tuesday against NC State. Unfortunately ...

I was willing to forgive the total lack of defense against Oklahoma State, thinking NC State might have been exhausted, but the 82-80 win over UNC-Asheville convinced me that this team could go an entire year without buckling down. The idea of the Wolfpack winning six straight games with their run-and-gun style has lost its credibility.

Something I've wondered recently is whether one can rank the quality of teams by percent of time that they've held a lead in their games. My theory goes that teams will always do whatever it takes to get the lead, but might have different philosophies once they get it (grind out the clock, wear out the opponent, score all the points, even put in backups to get them reps). It would also more properly rate the quality of wins like our Northwestern game vs. our Iowa game. Or maybe I should ask Mathlete this.

If he stops the running game next week I'll buy the Jaguars and draft him #1 myself.

You just lost 2.5 PGs. You almost lost your starting PG. A week ago, this team was staring at a top 10 team in terms of talent, almost literally without a point guard--ie a top 30 team. And now, after nearly going from 3 or 4 to 0, Beilein thinks Michigan is set with 2-a true freshman and a true sophomore? Again, I don't get it.

1. Trey Burke is a legitimate draft prospect. He's probably in the top 60 one year removed from high school. For people like him, a life strategy of making money playing basketball is absolutely a good idea and I don't understand how you can dispute that. It's just a matter of how he plays his cards.

2. His draftability isn't going anywhere. At most, 1% of players would hurt their draft stock by staying in school another year. At least 50% would improve it. This is why a true freshman projected in the late 1st/early 2nd should stay. A 1st round contract is that important.

If he had pushed himself into the first round with another year (a virtual lock IMO), he would get a guaranteed 3-year ~$3 million+ contract. He lost at least $1.5 million leaving a year early.

I think his ceiling would have been in the top 15, so it's probably more like $2.5 million he lost, just for the chance to let the NBA chew him up and spit him out a year too early.

And not only that, but Pryor was Academic All Big Ten. That's nothing short of fraud.

I don't put too much stock in Khoury's Va Tech performance. Given an off-season of preparation with the 1s instead of 15 minutes, I think he would have been a very respectable contributor this year.

Meyer's obviously a good coach, but his success at Florida was exaggerated by Tim Tebow. He's not a magician, and he doesn't push the boundaries of medical redshirting like some of his SEC opponents do. That means he has little competitive advantage over a bunch of $4 million coaches year in and year out. I'm sure he foresaw some 7 or 8 win seasons mixed in with the 10 or 11 win seasons, and said see ya. Meanwhile the Big Ten simply doesn't have the coaches you see in the SEC. They aren't as good top to bottom, and they can count when they recruit. Add in that he coached at OSU before and it's obvious why he's there.

Golden would make the most sense. He didn't sign up for the drama going on in Miami, and he doesn't seem like a Miami coach. He's also one of the coaches out there that actually believes in Penn State and would want to bring it back up from this low point in its history.
