Before becoming a head coach, per Wikipedia he spent 2 years a GA at Michigan, 13 years as an offensive line coach at Colorado and then at Michigan, 3 years as offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State and 3 years as a tight ends coach at Dallas. He's never been a defensive coordinator or position coach.
Which does make it odd that many of his LSU teams had good defenses and questionable offenses, but it doesn't make him a defensive guru.

So I answered the call of nature and when I came back downstairs the clock was at zero and the scoreboard showed Michigan on top.

|26 weeks 2 days ago||Until 1993 I used to follow Penn State||
My parents were friends with a family in State College (the father was a professor and eventually department head), and we'd spend a night or two there on the way to my grandparents out east. I always enjoyed my time out there, and I found mysef rooting for Penn State, particularly in their national championship runs of 1982 and 1986.
By 1993, my parents were divorced and had lost touch with their friends, I had graduated from college and Penn State had joined the Big Ten. I quicky became annoyed with Penn State fans, and after the Sandusky fiasco became public I just felt sick.

Michigan outgained and outplayed Penn State, but Penn State still was in position to win that game with a break in the fourth quarter (meaning a defensive touchdown or a lucky tipped pass).
Then Jourdan Lewis had a good kickoff return after their last field goal and they got the clinching touchdown.
I don't see it happening this year, though. The game is in Ann Arbor and Penn State has lost too much on defense.

Miami in Super Bowl XXIX and Denver in XXIV just weren't in the same league. Not to say Montana wasn't damn good, though, but I think the 49ers would have won with a lesser quarterback.
Of the two close Super Bowls Montana and the 49ers won (both against the Bengals), Montana played more of a game manager role in the first one. Many of the big plays in that game came from the defense, including a goal line stand. It was only in the second game against the Bengals that I think Montana was critical.
All of Brady's Super Bowls, on the other hand, were close. The Patriots could have easily lost five or even all six with an inferior quarterback.

|1 year 6 weeks ago||No||
From Hoke's perspective, this is a step down and a bitter reminder of his dream job gone bad.
From Harbaugh's perspective, bringing in the previous head coach so soon is likely to lead to problems. Remember, Hoke just got fired. Why take the risk that Hoke doesn't get along with the new coaching staff? Why take the risk that Hoke is still bitter about being fired? Why take the risk that Hoke undermines his authority (consciously or not)? There's really no upside for Harbaugh to hire Hoke.
Also, Hoke hasn't been a DC at the college level (per Wikipedia he was for two years at an Indiana high school in the early eighties--link).
Mattison is a different story; he doesn't have his ego invested in the DC position the way Hoke did in the head coach position and is more interested in staying close to his family in Ann Arbor.

They largely held Rogers in check, though. He got ~120 yards but averaged around 4 yards per carry. Michigan turnovers, a critical third-down penalty on the winning touchdown drive and a drive that stalled in the red zone at the end of the game were what lost the game.
|1 year 14 weeks ago||I was looking at last year's stats||
They listed the position. Mostly DB and WR, but at least one was a DL.
Unfortunately that still doesn't tell you much, since a DB or WR is likely to be on the punt block team and/or likely to pick up the ball after a block.
Also, I counted 68 punt return TDs last year.
|1 year 14 weeks ago||The '97 team had 2 of its 3 close calls because of the offense||
Against Notre Dame, IIRC the offense turned it over on three consecutive possessions and the defense had to make stops to preserve a 21-14 lead.
Against Ohio State, the offense only scored one touchdown. The other two came on Woodson's punt return and Andre Weathers' interceptions return. Griese also lost a fumble deep in Michigan territory.
I'm not counting Iowa since the offense was responsible for a pretty decent comeback. (The offense was responsible for one of Iowa's touchdowns, though, scored on a short field after a Griese interception.)
So I think this is consistent with the idea that Carr's strategy best if the defense was really damn good. Most of the rest of the season, the offense just needed to score enough points.
|1 year 14 weeks ago||Eh, it's only partially absurd||
I strongly suspect that neither Rodriguez (if Pryor had helped him survive another year) nor Hoke would have tried to ignore the tattoo scandal like Tressell did. They'd still lose their senior starting quarterback and presumably a couple of other starters for most or all of the 2011 season, but they would have kept their job.
So we wouldn't have been exposed to the spectacle of Greg Robinson as interim coach. (Or Mattison, if Rodriguez had still been fired after three years.)

The rules were changed in I believe 1992 to allow the defensive player to advance a fumble from anywhere on the field. (Which doesn't explain the period from 1992 to 2002, but we only had three interceptions for touchdowns in the eighties, too, so go figure.)
I'm not exactly sure what the old rules were; obviously it did happen prior to 1992. The ball may have needed to not touch the ground, which would make returns much rarer. I also googled something about the ball needing to be past the line of scrimmage, which does not ring a bell with me. That would also make returns for touchdowns less likely, as the offense would usually be between the recovering defensive player and the end zone.
|1 year 23 weeks ago||I'm actually not convinced of that||
Mostly because I keep picturing a MSU defensive back tackling Desmond Howard on a two-point conversion attempt.

It's entirely possible that he either has Type 2 diabetes and does not have an official diagnosis, or that he does and he's not managing his blood sugar well. You need to learn how to do it, and it's not uncommon for somebody with Type 2 diabetes to be in denial.
I personally tend not to notice low blood sugar until I realize I'm horrifically cranky. In a high stress environment where he was likely to have been running on adrenaline anyway, Hoke might have been able to ignore it until after the game.

From Arlington, handle place kicking in the early eighties (including the team that won Bo's first Rose Bowl). He actually played in the NFL for a couple of years, which was a novelty for a Michigan kicker at the time.

|1 year 28 weeks ago||He's got two touchdown drives||
One against Kansas State in the 2013 bowl game and one against Minnesota. No, he hasn't looked good but the offense struggled for much of the last two years with Gardner so I wouldn't read too much into it.
I agree, though, that Ruddock is most likely the starter. However, I don't think Harbaugh is going to hesitate to play someone else if he thinks they'll play better.
|1 year 28 weeks ago||Here you go||
What's interesting is that at least statistically Wilson seems to have regressed between 2009 and 2010 despite the fact that North Carolina State improved dramatically (going from 5-7 in 2009 to 9-4 in 2010).
He still made a hell of a jump in his only year in Madison.
|1 year 28 weeks ago||You are absolutely correct||
In the season opener against Western, for instance, Cook was just 6 of 16 and MSU managed exactly one offensive touchdown (link) in a 26-13 win. In their next game against South Florida, they again managed only one offensive touchdown in a 21-6 win (link).
So yes, we were laughing at both Cook and the MSU offense. They started to turn it around after they lost to Notre Dame and although they still struggled occasionally (like in the 14-0 win over 1-11 Purdue) they nonetheless managed to put together a run I think any Michigan fan would have been happy with, culminating in a Rose Bowl win over Stanford.

|1 year 36 weeks ago||The 5-4 record in games with kickoffs returned for a TD||
It's not that surprising. The more opportunities you have to return a kickoff, the more points your opponent is scoring. Take Tyrone Wheatley's return against Houston in 1992. Houston scored exactly once, so Michigan presumably had only two opportunities to return kickoffs.
The 41-5-1 record in games with punts returned for a TD is unsurprising for a similar reason. Every opportunity you have to return a punt is an opportunity your opponent didn't score.

|1 year 36 weeks ago||Leach was a glorified running back||
More accurately, he was an option quarterback who started as a true freshman. By the end of his career he had improved his passing substantially, but it was pretty obvious he was never going to be QB in the NFL. (So he played major league baseball instead.)
More often than not Bo had a glorified running back playing under center. This included Leach, Denny Franklin, Steve Smith and Michael Taylor, who were all multi-year starters. Michigan didn't start producing NFL starters until the Gary Moeller era. (Grbac was the first and admittedly started a few games under Bo when Taylor was hurt.)
|1 year 38 weeks ago||Oh come on||
Hoke had six years of head coach experience and took two different teams to bowl games. He was clearly in over his head at Michigan but this is unfair.
|1 year 39 weeks ago||That may be true||
But the Dunaways may not see it that way. (Or the next recruit.)
|1 year 39 weeks ago||Carter Dunaway won't be here for over two years||
So I don't think it's unreasonable to ask people not to be dicks at his hello post.
While I think that "trusting the coach" can be a copout, at the same time it's ridiculous to criticize Harbaugh for recruiting someone that you don't like. Two years is a long time and lots of things could happen. Carter Dunaway could get injured and drop football, or decide to play somewhere else. Or he could develop into a legitimate four or five-star recruit.
I'd also add that even if an occasional player is a flyer I wouldn't be so concerned. The overall strength of Harbaugh's recruiting classes is going to determine his success at Michigan (along with how well he and his staff develop them). If a particular player does not pan out, but most of his teammates do, I'm not going to worry about it. It happened under Bo, it happens under Saban (why else would he use oversigning?) and it'll happen under Harbaugh.
This is not even remotely the equivalent of giving Carter Dunaway a participation trophy. This is Harbaugh getting a commitment from a kid who he thinks has a chance to be a good football player.

While that was probably the worst game I've seen Wisconsin play (and I lived in Madison during the Don Morton years), they're 2-1 in the Big Ten Championship game.
That includes a 70-31 win over Nebraska the year without Russell Wilson.
|1 year 40 weeks ago||It's not unrealistic||
Look at USC when Pete Carroll took over for Paul Hackett. Hackett's last team had finished 5-7. Carroll took over with future Heisman winner and NFL starter Carson Palmer as his starting quarterback and finished a glorious 6-6. It wasn't until after Carroll had a year to work with Palmer and the team that he Southern Cal started to win consistently again.
Part of that was that Palmer was poorly coached under Hackett and threw a lot of interceptions and was generally ineffective. Does that sound familar? Carroll eventually got him performing at a high level, but it took some time.
In the long run I think the team is in much better shape with Harbaugh, but there are too many question marks on offense for them to do markedly better than they have the last couple of years. If everybody stays healthy and progresses faster than expected, sure, it could happen. If we have some key injuries and not all players progress at the speed we'd like, it could still be a long year.
(For the record, I hate using Carroll as an example here because he was such a sleazeball at Southern Cal.)

A friend of mine was moving and rented a truck, which he parked in front of his apartment. After we had loaded the damn thing, it wouldn't start. If I remember correctly it turned out it had been filled with regular gasoline instead of diesel. So we had to scramble to find a pickup truck and various other cars to get him moved.
On Monday he calls up to try to get his money back. Initially they tried to blame him for the whole problem, of course, but eventually they grudgingly admit that he was in the right and that they'll give him his money back.
When he looks at his VISA statement the next month, he notices that they've credited him seven times. He never said a word.
