Do it!

Like someone mentioned earlier, the local Alumni Clubs get money from AAUM to host events throughout the year. Watch parties, happy hours, etc. By being apart of the AAUM, you are supporting these local clubs in addition to any benefits you might get.  These clubs also support scholarships that help get students to Michigan.

Wait, Rovell reported something incorrectly? Isn't this his area of specialty too?

Pitch

Most of these have probably been repeated, but they are repeating:

1. Grand Rapids is Beer City, USA. There are lots and lots and lots of microbreweries through the city and along West Michigan.

2. Proximity to Lake Michigan. I do not go near as much as I should, BUT the state parks in Holland and Grand Haven are gorgeous. Depending on where you live in Grand Rapids, they are about an hour tops.

3. Proximity to Ann Arbor. I mean, it is not as close living on the east side, but 2 to 2.5 hours is not bad for going to the football games. Closer than Arizona. If driving is not your thing, the U of M Club of Grand Rapids works a local bus company to have buses to take you to the home games.

4. Solid schooling systems. I went to Hudsonville High School (~15 minutes away from GR) which was a pretty solid HS education and the rest throughout the area (there are some duds however) seem quite solid. A lot of GR kids end up applying and going to Michigan as well.

Recalibrating Expections

One of two silver linings of going to Michigan from 2008 to 2012 was having to recalibrate expectations the entire time I was there (the other being able to watch denard in person while it was affordable).  It really put into perspective how nice even the run during the early-mid aughts was (3 Rose Bowls in 4 years).

However, the same cannot be said for basketball.  Expectations be too damn high now.

Miggy has already got a WS title, with the Marlins in '03.  Totally okay with him winning another in Detroit though.

technically, ohio will win the leaders division this year, so division titles are not worth very much since neither of us could win the B1G. i kinda hope wisconsin wins the CCG just so the conference champ didn't win their division

Once people start cutting off

Once people start cutting off their legs to replace them with carbon fiber prosthetics, then it will be an unfair advantage.

It's mathematically impossible in a best of 3, 5, or 7 series for one team to have 2 more home games than the other team.

pssst, I think you meant MMB

How is Matt Cassel part of that list?

He didn't even start a game as the QB at USC...

Why not Below?

Really, why not?

no chills

Definitely didn't get chills from hearing that song at the end of the game because I'm pretty sure I was yelling something along the lines, " NOOOOOOOOO DEAR GOD WHY".  We already have a song made for that moment called "The Victors".

In terms of OP, good for Mike Martin, but it doesn't change my opinion on the song or band.

Snake Oil Swag

He did do something.

He just did not do enough.

It is what it is.

Here is Rick Reilly's take: http://espn.go.com/espn/story/_/id/7492873/rick-reilly-paterno-true-leg…

He did good things, and he did bad things.

In all honesty, I'm shocked at how everyone feels the need to piss on his grave.  He at least deserves a day to be remembered as a human and for his whole body of work to show. The fact that most of these comments are "I AGREE BRIAN" and "HOW COULD ARGUE IN DEFENSE OF HIM" is absurd and beyond judgmental.  Who are you to say JoePa was a terrible man based one action? Shame on you.

Not one of your better pieces, Brian.  Too much being an angry dick and beating of dead horses.

About the doubting

Especially since this story came after the Penn State incident, how could people think that this kid was lying?  I mean, it is incredibly hard for sexual abuse victim to speak up since they are trying to comprehend what happened and feel embarassed for it in even happening.

Peralta at 3rd would be a bad idea

The Indians moving Peralta to 3rd is the reason we got him for cheap.  Why would we do the same to him a season after he made the All-Star game at SS?

Huey Lewis and the News

Huey Lewis and the News

oh i don't know

He seems hardworking, is an above average defensive 3rd basemen when healthly, and seems like a nice, likable person (met him before the Bowling Green game in Saline to have him sign a baseball for my dad). I can't really fault him for not wanting to go back to C after they signed Pudge, moved him and then expected him to go back even though he was just as good defensively, if not better, at 3rd and liked it more.  The criticism was a bit unfair before this season considering he was on a roll before he tore both of his knees and was recovering from surgery on both.  It's definitely fair now, but I do wish him the best in Toledo and hope Bull Durham is able to fix his head and bat since Lloyd McClendon could do neither (especially the bats for the whole team)

Moving Peralta to 3rd = bad idea

When the Indians moved Peralta to 3rd, that's when his hitting and attitude went south.  Dombrowski would be a fool to do that.  I'm glad Jose Reyes is not going to be available since he'd probably just be an expensive rental anyway.

Boesch can't bat 5

The pressure of the 5 spot is actually far greater than the pressure of the 3 spot.  When Magglio went down, teams just pitched around Cabrera and went after Boesch.  Boesch continued his post-All-Star slump, and Cabrera lost his protection, killing the Tigers' offense.  He seems to be hitting well in the 3 spot like he was last year, so I see no reason to move him.  I do agree we need to find better table setters.

I had a friend transfer from GVSU Eng to U of M Eng

He had difficulty transferring a lot of his credits for something other than general credits, so if you know what you want to do, talk to that program and try to make most of your credits transferable.  Other than that, stay involved and have as high of a GPA (he had a 3.9) as possible.

Other option is to apply to the bridge program if you still can.  I have a friend who was waitlisted and did that to get in without transferring.  Ann Arbor is awesome in the summer as well.

A lot of Nursing credits only transfer as general credits

Most of the Nursing credits do not transfer as anything but general, so they will still have to satisfy most of their distribution over 3 years + summer classes if they want to graduate in 4 years.  My gf started in Nursing (she wanted to do it her freshman year), and only Psych 111 and 250 have helped her graduation requirements besides general credits (even though she took a hybrid Biochem class as a freshman). She had to take a few summers' worth of classes to graduate (hopefully) through the School of Education in 5 years.

That being said, I still don't agree with what your friends did especially since there are a lot of people waiting to get into the program.

Haven't taken classes with either but

I have heard Bruce Conforth is a great professor, and if I had any space left in my schedule for non-required classes that make sure I graduate next year, I probably would take one of his classes.  His topic seems more entertaining and interesting for a general crowd.

Seriously

As a IM referee working for Rec Sports at U of M, I agree that this is a pretty big deal.  I've reffed games where players have thrown balls at each other and have immediately been ejected for the game, sometimes forcing their teams to forfeit.  This situation is even more serious than those above especially since we are more defenseless than the players.  If this story is as serious as it suggests, then I'm disappointed in this recruit since it takes a big lack of sportsmanship to do something like that.
