I was a hockey fan before thanks to Michigan and Red Wing teams that were historically good in my formative years, but Tech games are something else - the level of fan involvement for a program that hasn't been good since before I was born + a certain level of drunkeness that most social Tech students end up perfecting, made for a great hockey atmosphere.
That fandom always extended to GLI also, where there would always be a good turnout and a number of Tech fans traveling from all over the Midwest to watch us get our asses handed to us more times than not.
How embarassing is ESPN now? This whole thing was truly truly pathetic all around...and the lame attempts at humor by Jim Gray? Marv Albert may have bitten a chick but at least he's a good sports personality. I've never felt so sick to my stomach watching something on ESPN until now.
And as for Lebron, this is what makes him so different than Kobe and Jordan - they would have never pulled this type of stunt. He won't ever win anything in Miami...at least I certaintly hope he does not. The difference between this Big 3 and the Celts was that they had good role players signed - Miami only has enough cap room for basically league minimum players here on out and only 1 other player currently under contract. Instead of being 31 with bad knees in Cleveland, or winning immediately in Chicago, he'll be 31 without a title and without Wade whose knees will have fallen off by that point.
All 4 were at Michigan. I believe Christian, Peter, and Alex were on the same team together at one point. Christian didn't have the size, but if he had avoided injury he would have been an All American.
I come from a swimming family (two of my cousins swim for UM now) and have known his family for a long time - total class act. I remember that he was 5'8" as a HS sophomore and not as good as his older brother Christian (who also swam for Michigan). Times have definitely changed.
My HS team got killed by Craig Krenzel, lost to Michael Tennessee (twice) who went on to be a D2 AA for GVSU, and we beat Jim Sorgi in the playoffs one year. Sorgi might have been the toughest HS kid I've ever seen. I remember we just unloaded on him over and over and being as skinny as he was, I thought he might break in half.
There was a recent story about his efforts and his health in the KC Star a few weeks back and what made it even sadder was a comment by a friend saying that he would be remembered and paid attention to much more in death than he would ever be alive. Everything he ever made, everything he ever did publicity-wise, was so he could send money to Sudan. Athletes could do more to be like Manute.

Admissions and AD is kept completely separate, but I'm sure there are other factors that might have some pull to get a kid in - overall GPA of the program at that time, stats saying how many kids were having academic issues, donors (guessing on that one). Each one of these kids are completely individual cases where some riskier kids are worked with by Admissions (see Gallon and Turner) and some are not (Witty and Dorsey). Plus Admissions can always take into account "other things" outside of grades and test scores.
Respectable, non-biased newspapers do those things. I would hardly throw Freep into that category.
The Freep made it about winning the day they sent a columnist to write an objective piece in which the writing was unbelievably poor and outright false, the research minimal, and the actual sources non-existent. Then they kept it up with consistent attacks against the staff and AD in various columns and stories, and then followed it up with their actions at RRod's press conference on Signing Day. Just ask some people about Sharp's behavior at that event.
I'm no conspiracy theorist, but even you and I can see there is much more than "reporting the news" happening here.

So, somewhat similar to what has happened to Dorsey - UM coaches/AD convince admissions to allow them to offer a scholarship to a kid and allow the kid to sign a LOI, admissions set the criteria that need to be met (along with the Clearinghouse, obviously), kid meets the criteria and is qualified (according to Birkett), Michigan Admissions doesn't even wait for the process to finish before saying "you did what we asked you to do, but we changed our minds and no thanks".
What makes this one more troubling is all the nightmare PR Michigan and RRod had to go through and admissions still flips the script on a kid, despite fully knowing his background history when they agreed to allow him to sign a LOI and having the kid meet his obligations. If he is qualified and goes to FSU, why would a Florida kid ever want to attempt to get into Michigan again?
I agree that Michalek would be a good get because he fits the age and didn't have an exorbinate salary previously. However, I don't see a ton of 26-29 year olds on here that are in the sub $3 million category that wow me. Jones is overpaid and had an awful season, Martin is overrated and was so so for Jersey, Volchenkov was less than impressive (and he's been wildly inconsistent in his career), I would take Seidenberg, Leopold is inconsistent and a mess in the playoffs, Krajicek regressed and has really had an awful 3 years (after watching him get torched, no idea why he commands that salary), I would take Carlo Colaiacovo, Jurcina was unimpressive on a team that scored 90 goals a game and was completely loaded offensively, etc.
So I don't agree that it's loaded.
Also, I never said that Brendan Smith isn't 2-3 years away, I said "relatively". In the world of young defenseman, the standard is 2-3 years. With what the analysts say, after watching him dominate for Wisconsin, and the fact that he was a Hobey Baker finalist, if he continues his development he'll be a good player for the Wings. With the style the Wings play scoring from the Defense both 5 on 5 and on the PP is necessary and with his quick hands, passing vision, skating ability, and ability to score, he'll play sooner rather than later. Since Kindl is a very similar player with a bit more size, it'll be an interesting battle to see progresses quicker.
We've got a lot of our cap locked up in our most important players: Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Lidstrom, but there isn't a great market for 2nd line defensemen right now that are YOUNG.
This team has to get younger and right now the only way is through development. Signing Brendan Smith from UW was a huge step in the right direction as I feel that kid is going to be dominant relatively soon.
