I agree

I was a hockey fan before thanks to Michigan and Red Wing teams that were historically good in my formative years, but Tech games are something else - the level of fan involvement for a program that hasn't been good since before I was born + a certain level of drunkeness that most social Tech students end up perfecting, made for a great hockey atmosphere.

That fandom always extended to GLI also, where there would always be a good turnout and a number of Tech fans traveling from all over the Midwest to watch us get our asses handed to us more times than not.

ha

I hear ya on the volleyball girls...I'll add 'select' sorority girls to that mix also (DZ's or D-phers mostly).

I was one of the guys who was overly social (switched from ME to MIS freshman year), to the detriment of my GPA and relationship with my parents.

Not true

He got his masters from OSU, was an assistant at OSU for a year, then NW, then Purdue.

ESPN and Jim Gray suck

How embarassing is ESPN now?  This whole thing was truly truly pathetic all around...and the lame attempts at humor by Jim Gray?  Marv Albert may have bitten a chick but at least he's a good sports personality.  I've never felt so sick to my stomach watching something on ESPN until now.

And as for Lebron, this is what makes him so different than Kobe and Jordan - they would have never pulled this type of stunt.  He won't ever win anything in Miami...at least I certaintly hope he does not.  The difference between this Big 3 and the Celts was that they had good role players signed - Miami only has enough cap room for basically league minimum players here on out and only 1 other player currently under contract.  Instead of being 31 with bad knees in Cleveland, or winning immediately in Chicago, he'll be 31 without a title and without Wade whose knees will have fallen off by that point.

Yep

I run the same thing and it's been great...actually kind of surprised me, to be honest.

Yessir

Jolly Pumpkin has not only some great tasting beers, but some that are really strong also.

You'll get F'ed up and help kids at the same time.

One of the best characters in any TV show ever

"Omar comin!"

Yep

All 4 were at Michigan.  I believe Christian, Peter, and Alex were on the same team together at one point.  Christian didn't have the size, but if he had avoided injury he would have been an All American.

Good kid

I come from a swimming family (two of my cousins swim for UM now) and have known his family for a long time - total class act.  I remember that he was 5'8" as a HS sophomore and not as good as his older brother Christian (who also swam for Michigan).  Times have definitely changed.

My HS team got killed by Craig Krenzel, lost to Michael Tennessee (twice) who went on to be a D2 AA for GVSU, and we beat Jim Sorgi in the playoffs one year.  Sorgi might have been the toughest HS kid I've ever seen.  I remember we just unloaded on him over and over and being as skinny as he was, I thought he might break in half.

Kid is a freak...and nerdy looking
...

Not sure what that has to do with this comment...he was talking about embedding a video.  Does that make him an excellent poster?

Completely agree

There was a recent story about his efforts and his health in the KC Star a few weeks back and what made it even sadder was a comment by a friend saying that he would be remembered and paid attention to much more in death than he would ever be alive.  Everything he ever made, everything he ever did publicity-wise, was so he could send money to Sudan.  Athletes could do more to be like Manute.

Yum for Beer

Like the subject...My summer favorites are:  Boulevard Wheat (rival to Goose Island 312), Avery Maharaja, Founders Red Rye PA, Bear Republic Racer 5, Brewery Ommegang Hennepin, Boulevard Single Wide IPA, or Left Coast Le Merle Saison, Bells Two-Hearted

Criminal

You know it's bad when broadcasters on multiple continents are calling this dude out., which was just said on World Cup Live.

FIFA does not make its refs available for comment nor are they held responsible for errors in judgements (at least not publically vs. MLB).  Additionally, in the match report the ref doesn't have to detail who that last call was on.

Two different sports, I know, but compare two different ref reactions and how things were handled between Jim Joyce and this clown - night and day (now I can understand anybody saying yes, but soccer is way more intense from a fan perspective).  Donovan said he wasn't sure how much English he spoke, because when asked non-confrontationally, he refused to explain who the penalty was on.

good looking beer

Good looking pour sir!  Good, cloudy body with good color and a thick, solid looking head.  Shit, I'll drink this with you anytime.  Looks like a great beer for the summer.

Go with a saison next

wow

That didn't last long...no surprise here

Excellent

Best in the biz, IMO

Albom story

My buddy used to be a ball boy for the Pistons for years in the 90's as a kid and him and Albom had a run in one time that I think pretty much sums up Albom's arrogance.  I still laugh about it years later.

Scene:  Before a game, Albom was demanding one of the ball boys get him water and some snacks.  When it took longer than expected, he yelled at my buddy even though my buddy wasn't the original ball boy he asked to get him his water and snacks.

Albom:  "Where is my water?  What's taking so long?"

My buddy:  "Not sure.  Where's your lucky charms?"

Henning

Maybe this was a make up article for us after all the garbage he's written about us.  He can't honestly believe this can he?  MSU won't just take Izzo back, they'll rename the city after him if he doesn't leave.

I live in KC - No Hoax

This website is very much legit.  I also just watched the news on my television, and my eyes didn't lie as I watched them do an entire report on it (with more to come later).

It'd be one hell of an elaborate hoax because it isn't.  It's a CBS affiliate in Kansas City.  They've also been reporting from Columbia, MO (Mizzou) where panic is ensuing.

AD

Not a ton of sway really, but I've read a few things that basically say "eh, some, but barely".

Admissions and AD is kept completely separate, but I'm sure there are other factors that might have some pull to get a kid in - overall GPA of the program at that time, stats saying how many kids were having academic issues, donors (guessing on that one).  Each one of these kids are completely individual cases where some riskier kids are worked with by Admissions (see Gallon and Turner) and some are not (Witty and Dorsey).  Plus Admissions can always take into account "other things" outside of grades and test scores.

Yes

Respectable, non-biased newspapers do those things.  I would hardly throw Freep into that category.

The Freep made it about winning the day they sent a columnist to write an objective piece in which the writing was unbelievably poor and outright false, the research minimal, and the actual sources non-existent.  Then they kept it up with consistent attacks against the staff and AD in various columns and stories, and then followed it up with their actions at RRod's press conference on Signing Day.  Just ask some people about Sharp's behavior at that event.

I'm no conspiracy theorist, but even you and I can see there is much more than "reporting the news" happening here.

Yep

That's the real question...provided it's true that he actually qualified, what changed in 4 months that caused this?

I hate the impression that the Freep "won" with this one because Michigan backed off of the kid.  We all know how much they hated on the staff, AD, and university for taking his commitment in the first place.

Damn you Snyder, Rosendouche, Sharp...damn you.

You're right

You're right, poor was a little bit of anger on my part.  My apologies.

As for your comment about me being a "Scout guy", why should it be used in a negative context?  I merely said Birkett echoed what had been said on premium sites, which, if you believe Dorsey's coach in the ESPN article that was just posted, was correct (and I can't stand Birkett, so by no means do I think he didn't lift that info from Sam).

ESPN actually has a named source

That's got to be a first for them...not using "sources close to the situation".

This article is a whole hell of a lot more positive than any of the premium sites or Sam Webb on the air, but I would expect it to be because it's being written from a national perspective.

It still gives me some hope though.

"Scout guys"

I've loved watching you hate on Scout for a bit now.  Say what you want, but there hasn't been a single site that has been more accurate than GBW on many occasions and a single person who has been more accurate than Sam Webb.  If you don't think so, just name where I'm wrong.  Sorry you can't afford the $9.99 a month

"hate, hate, hate, hate, hate"

For who?

two things:

1) this isn't grades related (that will be verified soon, but Birkett's statement backs up premium sites' statements) but is instead "something else".

2) there are only two programs in the country that hold their athletes to a higher standard than the NCAA clearinghouse standards and Michigan is not one of them:  Stanford and I believe NW.

So it looks like a major decision needs to be made - do we want to win games and be a football powerhouse again which requires at least some risk, or do we want to publically take a holier than thou approach while privately keeping the same admissions standards that all but 2 D1 programs do and as a result field decent but not great teams?

Re: That's a good point

I believe this is true...especially in cases where character issues or background history are involved (not saying I think Dorsey has character issues at all, FYI).

Admissions is 100 percent subjective once the minimum qualifications are met.

Re: Witty

He actually DID get it done but his test scores were flagged by UM admissions due to the jump in qualifying score and it was deemed he was "too much of a risk" to admit.  This was the first hard example of a certain "tightening" of academic standards that didn't exist in the Lloyd Carr era (Slocum anybody?).

So, somewhat similar to what has happened to Dorsey - UM coaches/AD convince admissions to allow them to offer a scholarship to a kid and allow the kid to sign a LOI, admissions set the criteria that need to be met (along with the Clearinghouse, obviously), kid meets the criteria and is qualified (according to Birkett), Michigan Admissions doesn't even wait for the process to finish before saying "you did what we asked you to do, but we changed our minds and no thanks".

What makes this one more troubling is all the nightmare PR Michigan and RRod had to go through and admissions still flips the script on a kid, despite fully knowing his background history when they agreed to allow him to sign a LOI and having the kid meet his obligations.  If he is qualified and goes to FSU, why would a Florida kid ever want to attempt to get into Michigan again?

Point out to me where this great market is...

http://www.sportscity.com/nhl/2010-nhl-unrestricted-free-agents-by-position/#Defense

I agree that Michalek would be a good get because he fits the age and didn't have an exorbinate salary previously.  However, I don't see a ton of 26-29 year olds on here that are in the sub $3 million category that wow me.  Jones is overpaid and had an awful season, Martin is overrated and was so so for Jersey, Volchenkov was less than impressive (and he's been wildly inconsistent in his career), I would take Seidenberg, Leopold is inconsistent and a mess in the playoffs, Krajicek regressed and has really had an awful 3 years (after watching him get torched, no idea why he commands that salary), I would take Carlo Colaiacovo, Jurcina was unimpressive on a team that scored 90 goals a game and was completely loaded offensively, etc.

So I don't agree that it's loaded.

Also, I never said that Brendan Smith isn't 2-3 years away, I said "relatively".  In the world of young defenseman, the standard is 2-3 years.  With what the analysts say, after watching him dominate for Wisconsin, and the fact that he was a Hobey Baker finalist, if he continues his development he'll be a good player for the Wings.  With the style the Wings play scoring from the Defense both 5 on 5 and on the PP is necessary and with his quick hands, passing vision, skating ability, and ability to score, he'll play sooner rather than later.  Since Kindl is a very similar player with a bit more size, it'll be an interesting battle to see progresses quicker.

Difficult

We've got a lot of our cap locked up in our most important players:  Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Lidstrom, but there isn't a great market for 2nd line defensemen right now that are YOUNG.

This team has to get younger and right now the only way is through development.  Signing Brendan Smith from UW was a huge step in the right direction as I feel that kid is going to be dominant relatively soon.
